What's your favourite Manbag?

M-51 canvas engineer's bag -- black one as a business briefcase and olive green for casual travel. Comfortably holds my notebook computer, charger, papers, pens, etc. Great bags, great price.

I was going to post this! My first M-51 was bought from a disreputable Amazon store (whom I promptly gave a 1 star rating to - after it fell apart and I found I couldn't return it for a refund, I found a tag saying it was rejected by QA!), but I bought one from a local military surplus store after inspecting the stitching and it hasn't even shown any wear. Lots and lots of pockets, hidden and otherwise, and even a flat pocket on the back of it to keep important documents (like a final report) dry - very important in Oregon. Oh, and literally dozens of pen loops, which can be a bit short but not too much so.

Like BarryLee, I use a shoulder-slung bag, although only when working as a musician.

The pockets are great for all the handy tools, paracord, plasters for grazed knees, torch, water bottle, keys, wallet, etc. Small enough to carry around easily and keep safely on stage out of the way.

But often I'll need to carry A4 files for the day job, and the rather 'tactical' look is not perhaps as appropriate. And probably not the most prudent choice for London these days if you have a beard, and are a bit swarthy looking!

I found a UK maker who has a standard range, but who will also happily run off something to order. Starting with his 'Laptop rucksack' http://www.htleather.co.uk/catalogue/satchel/satchel.html#lruck, I paid £5 extra (£183 delivered) to have a satchel with a solid handle on top and catch on the front - I'll post a full review in the appropriate section for those who are interested...

Understated, solidly built and a good balance between bulk and contents.

That one looks awesome!

Here are a few quick and dirty shots of my satchel, which I took for Paul Hurst's thread.

It's made by a Melbourne family company - no international brand.

The strap is nice and thick, to allow for extended over-the-shoulder carrying. Plenty of room for pens, notebooks, laptop and miscellaneous stuff (e.g. scarf, beanie).

I am a big fan of Johnson and Murphy leather goods. They are very well made and get better and better with time as long as you take care of them. My favorite murse is there Slimline Laptop Case. I have had the case for 3 years now and it has developed a great patina and is ideal for my daily needs.

What do you guys think of this one?

Seems like the quality is there and it's a bit cheaper than some of the other ones floating around.

How can it be "vintage" and "new with tags" at the same time unless it's NOS?

It says the leather is vintage, not the bag. Maybe, it's made from an old cow.

Ah semantics, how I love thee. It all depends on how one decides to group the words... vintage could be used to describe either "leather" or "leather bag" which have entirely different meanings.

On another note, that does look like a well-made, durable bag. Not a bad price, and reasonably local to me.

Yeah I thought that they meant the design was "vintage" in comparison to this model:

Which I think looks more "modern". However you could be right in that they are referring to the leather, but then again I didn't really think about it.

I use a Targus Citygear netbook messenger bag. Holds my netbook, my ebook reader, power supply, a few pens, and other bits and bobs.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the company name? I am a Melburnian and currently on the hunt for a nice leather bag

No worries, Aget19. I bought it here: http://www.larosa.com.au/content/hawthorn.jsp

They have a few outlets over Melbourne. So if you're not in the Eastern Suburbs, you might find a shop nearby.

I currently for the past 6 years have been using a canvas messenger bag I got from Gap. It is ugly as all get out with a variety of stains on it. I am going to buy one of the Billy Goat Designs bags next paycheck. Time to upscale my life. As for contents well usually some work papers and 2 to 3 magazines. I am one of the few people without a laptop. Simply don't need one for work and my desktop computer is fine. My 2 year old would break it anyway. Now if I could find a good journal I would be set :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
