MB voiding warranty?

Tsujigiri

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here had MB void their warranty for using non-MB inks? I don't really like MB ink, and want to use a lubricating ink to loosen up the piston in my 149, but I'm not sure if this leaves obvious traces for MB to find.

I use MB inks, so I have not had my warranty voided yet.

EDIT: Because apparently my facts weren't true.

As long as you don't do anything stupid like giving them an inked pen or not flushing it properly, you should be fine. If you use a colour that MB does not produce, be extra careful when flushing. Oh, and I haven't had my warranty voided because I enjoy using MB inks.

I have not had my warranty voided, but I can tell you that I am told that to check if you didn't use MB inks only, MB reps simply sniff the nib of the pen. MB ink does not have a smell, most other inks do. This way they can tell if you were not following the warranty conditions.

Check the facts on that urban legend.

I heard this from my aunt as she visited one of the MB boutiques in India and they told her... however, you're probably right. I have never tested the theory myself.

Noodler's inks have a lot of smell to them. Probably not a good idea to use them in your pen...

I have used very harmless inks made by Parker, Pelikan and Waterman in my MB's. ... those can't be "sniffed". ...except by specially trained sniffer dogs.

I wonder if anyone ever has had their warranty voided... for ink violations.

Any stories?

My rather limited experience with MB service has always been wonderful.

Oh, my pen is more than 2 years old anyway.. are there any other reasons why I shouldn't use Noodler's ink if I'm no longer covered by warranty?

Thank You.

I have heard that Noodler's can be brutal - particularly their bullet-proof inks.

Because I value my MB pens very highly, I have decided to be very careful. Don't want to take any chances.

People will no doubt weigh in with their stories and experiences... let's see what they have to say.

Niksch wrote this in reply to a similar question... and I quote:

I'd avoid it. Non-comformity is bad.

Just kidding...really. With a regular routine of flushing, there probably isn't going to be a major problem. Most inks cause problems with flow when they are allowed to sit/set in a pen for a period of time.

Now that is just ink flow. Some highly saturated inks, a notorious example often cited is Bay State Blue, can stain the ink window slots of 146s and 149s. I say notorious in that BSB is mentioned frequently as an ink that stains about anything, and is often recommended as a great ink for pens that do not have ink windows.

Just conduct some periodic preventive maintenance on your pens, and you should be good to go.

All right... Interesting point of view... I like that reply... helps to calm down my jittery nerves.

Lets see, currently....

Noodlers Kiowa Pecan in a 80's 146 Mayusama ground Cursive italic....

Noodlers Zhivago in a 80's 146 factory OB....

Noodlers Bulletproof Black in a 60's #149 in a medium that has "arabic" nib qualities (wider on the horizontal strokes)

Noodlers Walnut in a Vacumatic Minuskin stub (throwing that one in to let you all know that I can get crazy and stray from MB once in awhile :yikes: )

I need bulletproof in my line of work...so I always have Noodlers BPB in one of my pens...which usually includes a MB 146 or 149. Noodler's Zhivago was my fav ink (MB Racing Green is catching up..quickly) and was always in one of my pens also.

Oh...and I do flush regularly..

(lets see where people take that line.. :bunny01: )

Never worried about a warranty because I have never bought a modern, brand new, Montblanc pen of any type.

Will post this in the other Noodler's thread too..

Haha, I always try to mimick that face, but I can never get it quite right...

Thank you all for your input! I flush my pens out after each filling of ink has run out, so I should be ok.

Rick... have you ever used BAY STATE BLUE in a 146 or 149? If yes... how did it work out for you?

Matt

Matt,

I have never used Baystate Blue in a #146 or #149. Love the color and still have a bottle that I use in a Pilot 78G BB nib...great pen for $20. Multiple, multiple threads in FPN last year concerning it's staining properties.. and it stains everything..pretty much permanately! I did my homework and realized that this ink would stain a clear ink view. So , no, I didn't take a chance on this ink or ANY of the Baystate Noodler's line (Concord, Cranberry..etc.) in a MB, Pelikan, Parker, Conway Stewart, Shaeffer, Sailor, Pilot (other than the 78G as mentioned before). The other Noodlers inks I have/use don't have this problem and are used by many here in FPN with various pens and manufactures. Maintenence is the key my friend.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
