Pelikan M605 - Blue & Silver

This was a pleasant surprise. Since I believe Pelikan to be the best big pen company in the world I had high expectations, and this pen exceeded them. Beside the perfect size, balance and craftmanship, this pen is almost all about the nib. This is the best medium nib I've ever tried and - contrary to my intention before the purchase - I will keep the M nib. The rather low total of 42.5/50 is a bit unfair - it is the initial impression that makes the total low. I'd say that 8.75-9/10 is a more fair overall grade. A lovely pen that I bought at a ridiculously low price (99€) in Berlin.

I didn't believe M nibbed pens could be something for me.

I didn't believe blue pens could be something for me.

I was wrong.

I'm very happy with this pen. This juicy, smooth, nib will be one of my favourites for journalling and letters. I'm so happy to be wrong sometimes!

PS My pics - no pics - does justice to this beautiful deep blue pen!

Nice review, nice pen (I have it!), but... what about the moratorium?? :hmm1:

Enjoy your new pen!

Nice review Dandelion. I like your handwriting and from the looks of it the M605 M is showing signs of a stubbish nib! This is something I've found on most examples of Pelikan mediums that give it great character. Congratulations on a fine pen at a great price.

You of all people should know that such things don't apply to Pelikans, diplo! :happyberet: The M605 is perfect for me in most respects. Enjoy it, Dandelion.

Thanks for positive response and the kind comments on my handwriting. I must say that this M nib has broadened my horizons. It is such a joy writing with! I think I'll go for a broad nib someday. I still prefer EF/F for notetaking and scribbling, but I think I begin to understand the thing with wider (slightly stubbish) nibs. Italics and stubs has been favourites all along, but this...lovely. Still very fond of this pen.

The M6xx nibs are pretty sweet. I just got an M640 Sahara with an 18K F and I am very impressed with it.

Here are some photos that I took today, that better capture the awesome blue colour on the M605.

I love the outdoor photos.

I was at a local office supply store to see if they'd gotten any new fountain pens in, and indeed they had-- some Souverän M405's. The nib was so buttery smooth that I seriously thought about cutting back on eating out for a while to afford it. I think I might have to start saving for a Pelikan, after playing around with that one and seeing everybody talk of how smooth the nibs are...

Great review--my blue M605 is one of my everywhere pens. Although I really don't need another pen, at 99 Euro, I am considering picking up a spare.

I agree! When I was in Germany this summer, I bought one at Kaufhof in Nuremburg. What a great price!

My wife bought shoes, and I bought a pen...

Nice review. Makes me miss Germany. :( The M6xx or the M8xx are some of the Pelikans I've been eying for a while due to the excellent M400 I have in my collection.

Beware, I think they still ship only to German addresses.

Got the blue M605 (and the yellow M200) from them a couple years ago, but had to ask for help from a German friend.

Isn't there anyone who lives in Germany who's willing to help us poor none-EU people get our hands on these pens at cost?

PLEASE???????

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
