Really cheap Hero Worker Bees not bad!

I bought a three Hero Worker Bees for about $1.50 each (that includes the shipping) and after writing with them for a week or two I have found them to be a nice, reliable, reasonably smooth pen.

I've owned about a dozen of them and 9 of them have been fine writers. I generally give them away to nice folks who ask about FP's.

 

It seems to be a "copy" of the Stypen school pens made bu Hero in China so I guess there are millions of Chinese school kids using them.

 

I gave 5 away at the LA Pen show to folk who helped me with various pen questions and problems including a guy who fixed a Shaffer MP for me for free (except I bought a $4.00 box of lead from him).

 

Interestingly, most of the pens I gave a way at the show went to folks who were showing or selling magnificent and expensive pens who were kind enough to express some interest in a pen that is the cheapest thing available and still writes nicely. It is truely amazing.

 

It is worth keeping a few on hand all the time; you never know when you will need one. It will never be a daily writer for me and it is certainly an ugly pen... but as a conversation starter or gift to a kid (especially if you want to irritate his or her parents) it is great!

You see them on eBay from time to time. I've never seen them elsewhere but I suppose anyone who distributes Hero's could probably get them.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
