I got a Conklin Duragraph Amber pen with 1.1mm stub nib yesterday, and it is writing well. I have another Conklin on order. I’m happy with mine. I got the Duragraph Red Nights earlier this year. It wrote well too.

Just to close the loop, the third M nib performed better than the previous two, but still skips. I'm back with the fine nib (which now intermittently skips). This Conklin All American cost me $150 in my money and a lot of stomach acid. I have since bought a Jinhao X159 ($17) and a Jinhao X850($6). There is never any skipping, the ink goes smoothly onto the page and they write really well. I'm told Jinhao make the Conklin All American (probably at a cost of $10 or less), but see above, Conklin dicked around with the feeds.

Since I do believe it's the feed, I may order a feed and nib from AliExpress for $3 and see if that makes a difference.

Oh and even though the support staff have been excellent, that's my first and last Conklin.

I ordered a Duragraph Voyager with 1.1mm stub nib. It did not write like the Amber version.  It seemed a bit ink starved too. I contacted the seller, and they said to send the pen back for a nib swap. When it arrived, it was clear they tested it with a dark ink. It writes how it should. So I’m glad the process worked out.

Jinhao have a model called Jinhao 9056.

and PenBoyRoy have reviewed and compared it directly to Conklin All American.

I would ask if I should consider Conklin All American Ebony Gunmetal Limited Edition EF one as price seemed okish ( $60 to be precise ) but all I get from this topic running away to other direction.

Anyone has any experience with EF nib ? It says Jowo 6 nib but apparently not that good?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
