  1. From the album: Shades of colour

Some fifteen months have elapsed between writing and scanning this sheet. While I haven't deliberately exposed the sheet to either sunlight or artificial lighting with a view to testing fade resistance, I haven't exactly taken any care to shield or hide the sheet from exposure either; at different times the sheet would have just been sitting in or on top of a pile of paper on my desk, or on a tray or in a box of stuff I put off sorting out. Of the inks on the sheet, it seems Lamy Vibrant Pink has faded the most, relatively speaking; it's particularly noticeable in the “Six.” left of the margin. The colours actually all look significantly lighter/brighter to my eye on the sheet than in the scanned image does on my monitor. I guess it's useful to have the tonal and colour reference patches in the image after all. All the writing was done with two pens only — one with a Fine nib, the other a Stub — and so obviously some of these inks are more apt to spread on the page and result in thicker lines being put down with the same pens and strokes.

    Oyster Budo

I have a bottle of MB Oyster Grey and as much as I want to like it, I find it way too dry. I didn't want to waste it and was wondering what I could mix it with that may help with the dryness. I have this ink at my holiday home where I only have a few inks, so the choice is limited. The end result (see below) is 6 parts OG & 1 part Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo. The ink is still a little dry and next time I think I'll try 5 parts OG to 1 part YB. YB is so saturated it dominates OG, hence the 6:1 ratio. I like the colour. Unfortunately the pic. shows the ink as slightly more grey than in reality but it was taken with my iPad on a dull day.

    Iroshizuku Kung Te-Cheng

I've always like Noodler's Kung Te-Cheng, but its quick-drying times, chalky texture, and high maintenance means I'm limited to using it in my Platinum Preppy eyedropper....until now. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3682/9429776061_7d1caf655a_c.jpg P1050685 by Jiadepix, on Flickr At last! A serendipitous mix of Iroshizuku Yama-budo and Ku-jaku has given me an ink with all the lovely indigo color of KTC and none of the fuss. Best of all, the flow is silky smooth and easy to clean....perfect! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7442/9429777231_8bf8e5a9a8_c.jpgP1050688 by Jiadepix, on Flickr 'Course, the color isn't 100% matching, and I'm still in the process of tweaking my formula (which consists of just throwing random colors together), but I do remember it was something like 60% Yama-budo and 40% Ku-jaku. I like how the Iroshizuku clone is slightly more blue than the original KTC...gives it a cooling effect that's easy on the eyes. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2844/9429778169_6a37c1e033_c.jpgP1050689 by Jiadepix, on Flickr The difference is most noticeable on white papers like my Rhodia dot pad, but on yellow or cream colored papers the two inks are virtually indistinguishable. I call that success! http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5328/9429779193_181f8f4d16_c.jpgP1050695 by Jiadepix, on Flickr And to end this all, if anyone's interested, I'm currently selling off my bottle of KTC (Preppy included), as well as another purple, the discontinued MB Violet. Cheers!
