Hello, I purchased my first fountain pen a while back, but the nib got pretty bent because I was still learning how to write with a fountain pen. The pen is a University and it has an Irgo 8 nib. I need to find a replacement but I dont know what to buy exactly... Does anyone know what nib I would need? Thanks

Hey all you college kids like me who use the fountain to take notes/general writing. Decided to see how many of us are on the forum. I apologize if theres already a topic like this one, I couldn't find one! Anyway. Lets give each other a picture of where, how, and when we use our pens. I am an American Student but would be totally open to hearing about students studying in other countries and their experience. Heres some loose guidelines to start the discussion. 1. Hey Guys, I am currently a Junior at high school and a big fan of fountain pens, as a student I only use fountain pens with the exception of a Rotring 500 for math. My experience with some fountain pens has been great, others not so much. I started out with a Lamy Safari in Medium, accidentally dropped it after a couple of months and broke the nib. I then got a Lamy AL Star (M), which had an incredibly smooth nib, at the same time I got a new Safari (M) to put another ink in, and it had a very bad nib, straight out of the box the tines were very uneven, and the bead at the end was beyond fixing, and there was absolutely nothing that can be done to fix that nib. I received a Parker IM for Christmas, which was a complete disappointment, very scratchy, and generally low quality nib same with another Parker Jotter I got. I take very good care of my pens and frequently wash them and clean them and my ink of choice is the Pelikan 4001. I want to invest in a new pen, one that I can keep for years as a daily pen, price is not the biggest issue, since I intend to save for it. I want something that has consistent quality, ruggedness, and smoothness, basically an everyday pen. I want it to be a step up from my Lamys and Parkers. Tl:Dr A Student looking for a reliable, high quality, rugged, smooth, and utility pen. Price is no issue. Through trials on lower end pens: Lamy Steel nibs, Can be very smooth, but can also be terrible. Generally non consistent quality. Parker IM and Jotter: Complete and utter disaster, even when changing inks, papers, and frequent washes. I want a pen to invest in, what are my options? Thanks in advance.

I am trying to decide on an appropriate FP and need advice. I had a look at previous threads asking something similar to what I have asked below, but they were from 2006. I will continue looking at relevant threads. What will I use it for? I am a university student (post-grad) who writes a lot (around 50 pages or more of equations per day). What do I use currently or used previously? The university provides ballpoint and also fineliner pens. The ballpoint pens make my fingers ache after a few pages. As I put a bit of pressure, often in the heat of the moment, the tip of fineliners get pushed back inside and they no longer work. The alternatives I have are: gel pens and FPs; I have chosen FP due to lower operational costs. I had a Parker FP (one of the Sonnets) which broke unfortunately (I fell asleep on it while writing in bed). I did not like this FP very much either as the ink cartridge was rather small, the pen dried up quickly during the pauses in writing, and ink flow was not smooth. What do I want in the new FP? durable & reliable: heavy usage as mentioned abovecomfortable: good ink flow and smooth flow of the nib on the paper.good sized ink cartridge: while I can refill if I am at my desk, but this is not always the case.affordable: as a student I do not have a large budget; perhaps sub $100 (but can be stretched if absolutely needed).classy (not entirely necessary): I do not like very colourful or oddly-shaped designs very much; I like something that does not draw attention to itself. I like black, shades of grey, and white/silver/metallic colours. From the pens I have seen, Waterman Carene FPs, in my opinion, are the most beautiful of them all.misc: I write on rather cheap writing pads so fine or extra fine tips may be most suitable.Thank you in advance for taking the time to help!
