  1. I have some 8-inch diameter PVC pipe left after using it to make a protective case for a tripod (for air travel). While looking at some of the scraps I had the idea to make a pen stand. I cut about a quarter of a section a little over 6 inches long and used a Dremel and hand tools to carve a little ledge in one end and five notches in the other. I was originally planning to use a smaller section (perhaps an eight of the circumference of the 8-inch pipe) mounted to the back (in the opposite direction) to make a support (so that it stood a bit like the legs of a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair). I got too lazy and instead just attached a small piece of one-inch diameter pipe to the back with silicone and it works a treat to support the stand. I sanded the entire thing to get rid of any markings and the sanded finish actually looks MUCH better than I expected. It's a buttery smooth, sort of silky texture. Here are some photos including one with a cheap promo ballpoint. I particularly like how the hollow of the curve gives plenty of space for your fingers when grabbing a pen.

    Horizontal Pen Stand

I know there are other threads with the exact same title, but the focus was on other things, like combining an ink bottle with a pen. I'm attaching images of what I'm looking for, especially the wooden, spartan one, the last image, Does anyone know an online store that carries such stuff? My usage would be to put the pen at rest uncapped at the stand while talking to a person on a phone, grab the pen, make some notes, then carry on the conversation etc. TIA Thomas
  3. Hey fellow FPNers, I recently got into 3D printing and have started designing my own things to be printed and one of them has been a pen holder. I thought I would share it with you guys as you would appreciate this. Notice I've populated the holder with a pen each of the "big 3" of Japanese fountain pen companies, can you name all the pens? (bonus points if you can name the 4th fountain pen in the picture, though it is hard to tell because of the photo quality) It's not exactly a traditional katana holder design, as they usually don't have as many bridging ribs or an ornamental top but I thought I would take some artistic/engineering licence with it. It is designed to be modular, so that I can add or take away or add as many spots for holding pens as needed as they just slot into each other. I currently only have green plastic at home to use but I was thinking or reprinting it at my uni's printers in brown or black and colouring into the text in with a metallic gold marker. What colour do you think would look best? The characters on top are not actually Japanese (though it would be interesting for someone to tell me what it could be translated from if it were read as kanji) but my Chinese name, I thought it would give it a bit more of an eastern/oriental look to it.
  4. I am the creator of The Pen Rest and from the feedback about my design members of FPN love it or hate it... That's life! What I'd like to know is your description of the holy grail of all pen stands, pen rests, pen storage or displays. Please would you describe your ideal product?

  6. Hello Everyone, Where do you get Fountain pen stands for your pens? Thanks
  7. Hi everyone. I have been working my father for some time to develop a pen stand that would hold even the largest pens safely, and would look nice sitting on a desk. My father is 83 years old and in great health and loves wood working, so the challenge was met with great enthusiasm. I am pretty happy with these two so far, and my Pa is hoping to keep turning these out if other FPNers are interested, so I thought I would turn to all you fine folks for some feedback and thoughts. The stands are built from solid oak and have a somewhat vintage looking stain. Although there are many colours of wool felt available, I choose green as I was kind of shooting for that old billiard table feel. A few people have suggested that black might look very nice as well. The pen holders will hold even the most massive pens out there. The largest I have is a Stipula Davinci, and it fits with even some clearance left over. Comments, suggestions, feedback? Thanks all.
  8. I bought this carved stone bull in Mexico a few decades ago and just realized it could make a nice pen holder.
