This is just to show the logo on the top of the cap of my early-1980s Pelikan M400 in Brown Tortoiseshell. The incised lines of the logo have been filled with brown paint, to match the pen’s body. The contemporary M400 fountain pens in Pelikan’s traditional Grün-schwarz stripes had their cap logos filled with green paint.

This picture shows the variation in the colours of the cellulose-acetate stripes on my brown tortoise. The ones around the other side of the pen are almost uniformly dark brown. This variability makes each brown tortoise unique and, in my mind at least, the irregularities in the colours of the stripes add to their beauty.

Detail of the 14k gold ‘M’ nib on my Pelikan M400 in Brown Tortoiseshell from the early 1980s. This M400 nib looks very similar to the M400 nibs from the later 1980s. The most obvious difference is that the later nibs have a slightly larger gap between the Pelikan logo and the letter (in this case ‘M’) that indicates the nib’s width grade.

This is my own translation of ‘Achetez mes soupirs’ by Alain Bosquet. Better - more competent, more-poetic - translations are, undoubtedly, available! I wrote it out rather hurriedly with my early-1980s Pelikan M400 in the ‘Brown Tortoiseshell’ finish. The pen has a mono-colour 14k gold nib, marked ‘M’. The ink is Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz. The paper is a sheet of 80gsm Rhodia ‘High-grade vellum’ from a No.18 bloc pad. I wrote this right after writing out the poem in its original French, with my M800. I have some tension in my shoulders today, and this has made my handwriting with this pen really awful - far worse than that with the larger-&-heavier M800.© Mercian

I have two or three pens that skip severely, including a Pelikan M400. How do I address this issue? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes in spite of researching the hell out of things on the web small details escape; in this case I hadn't realized the Sailor Pro Gear Standard was smaller than even my shortest M400... No complaints though, luckily it's still big enough for my large hands, the section is nice and thick and the nib is a dream... So in case this helps someone out there...

So I eventually realized my old Pelikan M400 had my least smooth nib, by far, while I remember it used to be smooth... It was more like dragging a rough piece of metal on paper, and Clairefontaine at that, with clear resistance and a sound reminiscent of nails on a blackboard, while even my cheap Mujis and Lamys glide... I remembered I had some micro mesh or whatever it's called, can't remember what I got it for, and decided to give it a go... That sort of idea usually ends in tears for me, but this time the nib clearly improved and is smooth again. I didn't use the micro mesh much, just did some "8" figures. So the question is: why did it get "draggy" over time? It's not exactly that the nib felt rougher, but it would sort of cling on to paper. What is it that the mesh removes?

I have collected many mid-level pens recently. I want to get a Pelikan, I just want a smooth writer with some spring when I get bored in class. I do not have a pen pouch, Pelikan remedies that. My question is, should I go for the 200, 400, or 600. I like all mediums, German and Japanese. Which one will provide me with enough spring, which is the best value, and which one is ideal for a student? Do they tend to be wet or dry? What finishes do you recommend?
