  1. I meant to do this back at the end of October but I forgot about it and a post on Facebook reminded me to do it. When I first bought an Oberon book cover it came with an insert that was easily the worst paper I'd ever used. It was like writing on tissue paper. It feathered everywhere, often spreading out into the paper like nothing I've ever seen and the bleed through meant the reverse side of the page was completely unusable, sometimes bleeding through two pages. I fixed it with a Tomoe insert curtesy of Gatzbon here on FPN (still using it!). Essentially though I bought Oberon for the cover not for the insert. I'd heard about the poor quality paper of the inserts but had no idea it was quite so terrible. The quality of the covers are second to none - very high quality, beautifully finished, robust and tough. So, I found it hard to resist another one when the opportunity presented itself. It came again with the large black covered insert. However, it does seem like they have improved the paper considerably. It's not perfect by any means, but it isn't like tissue paper. Some inks will feather a tiny bit but not greatly so, and I'm glad to report there is no excessive bleed through. I'm presuming they 'upped' the quality at some point and I may have missed the announcement, but thought I better post here to let folks know, or have you correct me if I'm wrong and I just got a freak insert!
  2. My Oberon Design large journal cover arrived today. I originally ordered one of the Moleskine journal covers thinking it was the same size, but it turns out the spine of that cover is thinner/smaller which means any journal or filler that is thicker or wider than a Moleskine journal will not fit. I didn't find out until after the order had shipped. However, it ended up working out because Oberon allowed me to place another order for the large journal cover and I was able to get it in a color I thought was discontinued. It turns out they will be the chocolate color once again and they just happened to receive a shipment of the new color so I was able to place a custom color at no additional cost because of the mixup with Moleskin cover. I've had an Oberon cover before and the fit and finish is impeccable. The leatherwork is of the highest quality and is best appreciated in person. It fits my Rhodia Webnotebook perfectly. I can open the notebook completely flat with no issues. Here are some pictures for those interested in this cover/notebook combination. Enjoy. Front cover The full cover Spine Open flat

    Oberon Help

I have a very nice Oberon tooled leather cover with a green bark effect and a central red circle with a tooled dragonfly. I love the cover, and as I have stated elsewhere, I despise the paper refill which feathers and bleeds and....well, to be perfectly honest is quite possibly the worst paper I've ever tried. So, I'm looking for a suitable refill. The insert book is 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches and is an inch thick. Could anyone recommend a paper refill of this size that I could put in it? I love Rhodia paper, but all we can get here are the flip up pads, or the tear off ones which won't fit in this cover. Suggestions would be gratefully received!
  4. So this was a bit or a surprise. I bought an Oberon journal - the one with the green tooled bark effect and the dragonfly in a round, red section on the front. It's a beautiful journal, nice weight, love the texture of the tooling and it looks pretty awesome. I had read that the paper in these journals wasn't the best, but I had also heard the same about other notebooks that I thought were ok - not brilliant, but ok. This however, took me totally by surprise. After having read that the paper wasn't fountain pen friendly I knew it wasn't going to be great, but I wasn't prepared for just how terrible it would be. I decided to christen it with Noodler's Navajo Turquoise in my Ahab. Initially the ink laid down on the paper just fine and the pen moved over the page smoothly; I finished the last letter of the second word, all looked fine....and then it happened. The paper suddenly became a tiny bit thirsty, the ink seemed to change a bit, then it got more thirsty, it started to feather like I've never seen ink feather on paper before. It bled through to the other side to a high degree and even stained the guide lined paper underneath! It looks like a tiny spider has crawled through my ink and then marked out two words. It really is a terrible shame, because this is a seriously nice product let down by something so simple. I know that I can go and insert another journal/notebook that will work, but it seems very odd that such a high end product would be let down by something so simple. Pity.
