  1. I have a new vintage Mentmore. It is a burgundyish/brownish marble pattern. I would like to ink it with something in the burgundy brown family, and I'm not a big fan of watery-looking inks(I know, then I should stay away from vintage, but the vintage are lovely writers and better values at this point). Has anyone had any luck with inks in this family that they have used in vintage pens for more than one or two fills, without incident? I have many brown around the home and I know my Yama-budo will be a no-no, though it would be aesthetically a good match. But form follows function...
  2. My first attempt at buying a Mentmore(the handsome brown marbled one in the pictures) led me to to the discover that nibs can sing(see other thread). I prefer other music. Then this even handsomer more burgundy tinged one was sent to me as a replacement. The sizing is a bit odd - it looks a little shorter unposted, but longer posted. They are both wonderfully weighted and sit nicely in hand. I dip-tested the new(well, it's vintage, but new to me!) one on Christmas and am thrilled to report in does not sing! Wonderful pen, though now I have to choose an ink that is neither blue nor brown but is safe for it. There's a little bit of feedback in an effortless writer. I'm so pleased.
  3. Hi All Sorry haven't been on here in a while... I have been busy trying to research some of my mentmores!!! I don't think they are dimplomas; Celestes, Modernes or even Majors. one of the barrels just mentions - Mentmore Made in england here is a picture of mine as well as the colours. best wishes Rick Mentmore colours.docx
  4. Hi, just thought id share my selection of Stephens (1932) & Parker victory (1935-46) English made (discounting the first 5 years made in canada). when you look at the the period in general a lot of the the other makers were concentrating on lever fillers. would be nice to see what else is made during the period in button filler. regards Rick
  5. Hi guys!! As it has been discussed many times on here, about the lack of info on Mentmore (platignum) in the early years.. Was wondering how many are actually a fan of the brand both lever & button.. talking up to the end of ww2 ish. are there any fans of the early brand... best wishes Rick

    Mentmore Autoflow Filling Mechanism

Hello everyone! I have got here a Mentmore Autoflow in BHR. I want to try restoring it. The problem at the moment is that it does not have a pressure bar in it. Therefore I cannot see what kind of part is needed as a replacement and how it would be fitted. The button is fine and screws out nicely. Just need to get an idea about the kind and size of the pressure bar needed. I did not find anything in the archives and would appreciate to learn what exactly I need to get. Maybe there is some reference somewhere, pictures or drawings of the mechanism would of course also help a lot. If someone knows which ink sac is needed I would be glad to hear as well. Thanks! Amelie

    Bit Of A Backstory...

Dear Monsieurs and Madames, I have been collecting fountain pens since the age of 7 or thereabouts. Today during the midst of a clear out I found this Mentmore Supreme that I spent the vast majority of my pocket money on when I was 9. I found it at a car boot sale and believe I paid around £3 for it. It has remained lost since then only to be rediscovered today. I have very few vintage pens in my collection and certainly profess to have no expertise when it comes to repairing fountain pens. I would love to get this pen working purely on the basis that it has a memory attached to it. I have taken it apart and believe that everything is present that should be. It is a button filler but the ink sac has largely perished. It does appear to move a little water when the button is pressed though. I have dipped it and the 14ct gold medium nib has a lovely flex to it. I really enjoyed writing with it despite the fact it is a little scratchy. The rest of the pen has some cosmetic wear that does not bother me a great deal. I think that the pen needs a little TLC to get it back to its best, a replacement of the sac and a bit of work on the nib and then some cleaning and what not. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows of someone who would be able to carry this out for me and a rough estimate of costs. Here are some pictures! Many thanks in advance for any help that can be offered. Thanman
