  1. Hi fellow FPNers I'm considering ordering a custom-made Conway Stewart Marlborough lever fill pen from Bespoke British Pens (BBP). I've read horror stories of terrible customer service, leaking sacs and snapping/faulty levers in Conway Stewarts from before BBP took over. Could you please share your experiences with BBP-made Conway Stewart lever fill fountain pens? Have you had any issues and how were they resolved? The pen I'm thinking of ordering is not part of their usual line-up...is it advisable to ask them to make a pen with a filling system that's not usually in their production line? Your feedback would be much appreciated! Many thanks! Best, John
  2. I have a cute, tiny, vintage Eagle Pencil Co. ringtop with a cute, tiny, flexible nib. I have no idea the age/model name of the pen; however, based on the flat-top shape, I’m assuming it’s from the 20’s/30’s. I’ve cleaned it out and would like to put a sac in it; however, the section seems to be integrated into the pen. I was able to take out the nib and the EXTREMELY LONG feed, but the section truly doesn’t seem to be able to come off. I can’t see any gaps between the threads (for the cap) and the body- even with a 10x magnification. Is it possible that the sac needs to attach to the feed?? There was no sac in it when I took it apart and cleaned it. It’s truly a cute little thing and I’d love to actually use it. Has anyone seen something like this?

  4. So.. I finally got my shipment from Anderson Pens for restoring my little Wearever and everything went great! I put a new sac on (which is watertight) and put a new j-bar in (40mm) but since they didn’t have talc in stock I ordered it from a separate place, and it is due to arrive soon. Anyway, so as I was moving the barrel with the j-bar, I dropped it, and the j-bar moved a little bit further back (I didn’t know it could, I pushed it back as far as I could) leaving me not able to pull it out with the hemostat. Long story short, I gave it somebody who, despite me telling them explicitly several times not to open the lever when trying to pull it out, did it anyway, and pulled the lever and a little metal ring out of the pen, along with the j-bar. Can I get the lever back in? Is my pen broken? Could I do anything to fix it? And if I can, should I put it a slightly bigger j-bar? Thank you for all of your help. I really like the way this wrote, it was like a medium that was ground quite stub-like. So I really want it to be a functioning pen. Thank you for all of your help. Below is a picture of all the parts, including the lever and the ring.

    1930S Lever Fill

I stopped by a local antique store to see if they had any fountain pens, and I saw a 1930s sheaffer lever fill ( and a marble desk blotter) and was wondering 1. How likely is it that I will need to replace the ink sac (shopkeeper could not vouch for it), 2 how difficult is it to replace the ink sac, and 3, what does a pen of that sort go for? I did not pick these up yet, maybe next time I stop in. I could not get a picture, but the body had stripes going along it in a deep green, and the nib was only marked sheaffer, 3, and made in usa.
  6. Looking for info on a FP that was gifted to me. I recently re-sacced it, and it's a pretty good writer. It has a 14k gold #2 Star flex nib. I know Weidlich went out of business in 1915, and they were produced into the '30s. This one was possibly from the '20s, but I'm only guessing. Any info on its rarity or possible value? No intention of selling, just like to know what I have. Thanks!

    Waterman's 52 Lever Fill Failure

Hi, I bought a circa 1918 Waterman's Ideal 52 lever fill fountain pen two weeks ago. I had it filled with Waterman's ink at the store, took it home, and gleefully wrote with it until it ran dry today. I started to flush it out with distilled water and after about 20, or so, fills and flushes it just stopped filling when I released the lever to fill it one more time. No forewarning of impending failure, no breaking or snapping sound, nothing. Any idea what this could be, is a fix simple? I am somewhat handy, but if this is a repair beyond my means, can someone recommend a place that works on lever fill pens that is good? Thank you for any advice you can offer up. Jake
  8. The first hour was spent trying to get the lever and slotted piece that goes into the bottom of the barrel to stay together while trying to insert both at once. Then I found a work around online which ended up working on the second try and in less than 5 minutes.
  9. I bought a mixed lot of fountain pens at a local auction recently and among them was a BHR lever-fill pen engraved FW Francis, BC. The body of the pen has no wear or scratches to the rubber and is still jet black. It looks as though it has never been used. The pattern on the body is a ripple effect which I hope you can see from the photos. The nib is engraved 14CT, 1st Quality, Warranted. The section pulls out of the body and I have emptied out the remains of the old, perished sac. I haven't replaced the sac yet, but the lever mechanism works perfectly so I don't envisage any problems when I do. I did a bit of online research, and didn't come across any other pens engraved like this one, but I did find that there is a long-established jewellers of this name in Victoria and assume that they commissioned the pens originally. Does anyone know anything of FW Francis pens and can anyone identify the manufacturer from the ripple pattern on the body or the shape of the fill lever? Any information would be much appreciated.
  10. Complete newbie here. Hoping someone can help me ID this pen I received in a lot on eBay. I am thinking perhaps a Parker, but the cap end and clip are missing. I want to replace these, it's a beautiful pen, but first I need to know what it is! Black with silver/copper Pearlized wave effect. Single band on cap - black tarnished with silver underneath. Window in section (yellow tint). Nib says "Curvex 14k gold plated", and I suspect could be a replacement. No other writing on the pen. Lever fill, but I have not been able to remove the section from the barrel yet. Sorry about the picture, it's the only one I have! Any help appreciated.
  11. Hi, I recently bought an Esterbrook J that I'm expecting next week or so. I'm aware that the Esterbrooks don't use a converter and fill their sacs using something called a lever filler. I was wondering if someone could elaborate on how that works. Like, how would I use that mechanism to fill from a bottle? My apologies if the procedure is elementary. -Thanks, Suji P.S. Are there any types of fountain pen inks that should be avoided in order to keep the sac from being damaged??

    Pen Id And Repair Help

I bought my first vintage rescue today, and am trying to identify it so I can purchase parts. In addition to the picture posted, here's what I know about it so far. It has a 14k gold flex nib stamped EAGLE (top line; largest) 14K (midline; midsize) MADE IN USA (nib base & smallest; slightly curved)The cap is postable and screws on. It's also missing the clip and jewel. The missing jewel (and possibly double-duty clip securer) should screw in as well. There's a small hole in one side of the cap.The colors are large veins of flat black and opalescent medium blue, with smaller veins of pearly white running throughout. It's a lever fill, and I think the sac is black latex. The cap ring might be brass. It's tarnished a bit.I've been able to identify several seams via color alone, but you can't feel them.I've been unable to find an Eagle brand pen that looks similar. I think it may be a Frankenpen. The body looks similar to a Shaeffer Prosperity, with the exception of the pointed cap end.I would like to Find a cap and jewel complimentary to the pen and if possible, accurate to the body's lineage and history (gettin' fancy now!)Know more about it in general, including general worth, etc.Repair the pen to the point that it works and looks pretty, but isn't a full-on, bank-breaking restoration.I am an utter newbie at this, so any resources you could direct me toward or information you can give is awesome! Thanks!

    Id And Restoration Question

I found this pen at an antique store for $8 and couldn't resist. The cap band has since fallen off, but I managed to resack it and it now works properly. Could anyone identify the pen based on the pictures and this description? It's a very small lever filler, the nib reads "SHEAFFER'S 3 MADE IN USA", the barrel reads "W.A. SHEAFFER CO. FORT MADISON IOWA, U.S.A. PATENTED IN U.S.A.", and the clip reads "SHEAFFER'S. The feed is very flat and has fins that do not go very deep, marked "L" on the bottom. The nib is very fine and has some flexibility. The clip and lever filler appear to have been gold originally, but have been abraded quite heavily. I would like to take the nib out to thoroughly clean the pen, does anyone know how to do this? Is this recommendable? Finally, I would like to clear up the foggy amber section and polish the pen overall- does anyone know what causes this and what would be best for this material?
