Hi friends! Finally, I can boast of my own fully created fountain pen. Of course, I didn’t make the nib and used a standard nib unit with Germany nib, but the rest was built by me from start to end. Sharing some pictures of my ever ready desk set from the Deccan pen stores in Hyderabad. Desk pens are offered by nearly every handmade ebonite pen manufacturer’s in India like Ratnamson(Kalam), Guider etc but what sets Deccan apart is the matching handmade desk stand. The base is made from a solid block of acrylic. The holder (tulip) is made from black ebonite. The tulip is perfectly airtight. Zero dryouts. The desk pen itself is very comfortable to use and is extremely well made. The section barrel joint is seamless to the touch and the section mouth has the hallmark finishing found on Deccans of yore leading me to believe that these were made in the olden days. The IPG nib is a very smooth writer and the pen holds a decent 2 1/4 ml ink and the pen weighs just 11gms dry. Cheers Hari

handmade handcrafted Chinese fountain pens?

Hi! I'm considering buying my dream pen. I'm interested in handmade (Is this true? I have no idea) Chinese fountain pens. I'm looking for something of Namiki, Taccia, Sailor quality. Something with raden, maki-e etc. I've only come across the SELMY brand from TaoBao. Prices range from ¥1900 CNY to ¥4550 CNY for a pen with a Bock steel nib. Is this a good price? How about the quality of Selmy pens? Are they top-tier, or is the quality proportional to the price and I can't expect the same from them as from Japanese fountain pens? Or are there other Chinese brands worth recommending? Greetings from Poland, PaJaC -
It is common among the community to say that gold nibs are not better than steel nibs. I disagree since most gold nibs are hand polished and tested one by one while steel nibs are mass produced in automated processes. So, in order for a steel nib to compete against a gold nib, it would need to be hand polished, hand finished and hand tested. Currently the only steel nibs that I am aware that are hand made are the Kaweco Premium Steel nibs (which cost $50 USD), , the steel nib of a Hero 40 years reform and opening special edition 英雄钢笔1978改革开放40 and Edison Pens. Maybe Faber-Castell steel nibs are also hand polished given their quality. But most steel nibs are not: Pelikan, Aurora, Lamy, etc. So, the question is what brands do you know that offer hand polished, hand finished steel nibs? Since today it was a cleaning day, I share a picture of a clogged feed and how I left it.

Vazir Shishya 3.0 (plastic/resin pushcap pen)

After hari317's post on Guider pushcap (pocketsize), I have been mulling over asking Guider to make something similar for me. In the meantime, Vazir, a newer Indian brand, launched Shishya 3.0, a pocketsize pushcap fountain pen that is made out of resin (plastic, I don't know the difference). I believe that the pen is handmade. It comes with a Schmidt #5 nib (FH241, I believe) and a Schmidt converter. I wanted to try it out, especially because, I want to have a pushcap (slip-on cap) fountain pen that is not too skinny as an EDC. It's pretty good! I have only used it for a couple of days, but I did not notice any dryouts. The cap does not seem to have any kind of inner cap, e.g., rubber or clasp. I would have preferred a little more girth, something similar to - or slightly stouter than - MB146 would be perfect for me. I would have preferred the standard #6 nib, I think the #5 nib is too small. But these are personal preferences. As it stands, this is a no-nonsense pen, fuss free, convenient pen. The Schmidt nib is soft and this greatly enhances the writing experience. It is targeted at students, at least size-wise, it makes perfect sense. It would also be good for adults with small to average size hands.
