  1. From the album: Ink performance testing

Lamy Benitoite was also included at the end, because there seems to be some uncertainty and conjecture online as to whether it has any iron-gall content.

  2. From the album: Ink performance testing

I couldn't stand how woolly and blobby some of the lines written with the tester pens look, especially in the actual testing pad and notebook (not Rhodia Dotpad) I'm using for the year-long experiment, and so I reground the nibs on all of the pens. Note: Colour correction — which usually makes the image darker overall — in GIMP was not applied after the scan, but I have included the reference colour patches from the same scan. I wanted to show you how dark Diamine Registrar's Ink looks to the scanner, without any doubt as to whether I artificially darkened it or increased the contrast.

  4. I like iron gall inks but often find them too dry for my taste. Recently I have had success with Diamine Registrars in a Pelikan M200. I tried a partial fill and when that was fine, carried on with a complete fill. The ink was in the pen for about 10 days and towards the end I noticed the ink window becoming obscured. After washing you could see there were hard edged patches of an opaque film inside. Not staining as I have seen before, but almost as if someone had made a bad job of painting it. Soap, cotton buds and effort have restored the pen but I am very surprised at something like this happening after such a short time. Does anyone have any advice, please?
  5. I've just got my first dip pen and bought some Diamine India ink at the same time. Whilst I know I've got plenty to learn about writing with a dip pen I did find the India ink very hard to use. It's so thick that the flow sometimes slows and then if I dip again to ease this I can easily get a blob. At the same time I bought some Diamine Registrars ink to try in my fountain pens. I tried this with the dip pen and it worked great! Nice even flow, and the colour is a nice deep even black because the dip pen writes so wet. Also before the nib runs out of ink the colour of the line goes more blue, to warn you you need to dip again soon. Yet once dry it's the same black tone as the rest. Also I was able to write more letters with the Registrars ink between dips, than with the India ink. What do other people use with dip pens, any others prefer iron gall to India or drawing inks?
