  1. Hello! I've had a Pilot Decimo for probably just around a year now. It's got a F nib, and I have a CON-50 converter installed. I've always used the same ink in it (I believe it's Diamine's Majestic Purple). I've never had any problems with it either, it's worked perfectly! Then, a few months ago (1-2) months, the ink flow just became terrible. It skips, sometimes completely stops, and is terrible to right with. I have to trace my letters five time before you can actually see the entire letter with no skips. I've cleaned out the pen fully (I used just water, I've never used any soap or anything with my pens) and it still doesn't work right. I don't know why it's not working. I really hope I haven't broken it, and I just want my favorite pen to be back to its former glory. The pen used to work so well, does anyone know why it might not be writing correctly? Thank you so much, and dear gosh I hope I put this in the right place.
  2. Hello all. I'm pretty new to FPN, and I'm wondering if you can help me with a question about the authenticity of my Pilot Vanishing Point Decimo. I received the pen today, and when I opened it up to put in some ink I noticed that the nib is unlike any other Pilot VP nib I have ever seen. I have been looking online for hours, but I can't find a single image of a Pilot VP nib that looks like what I have in front of me. I'm thinking that I might have received a counterfeit. Has anybody ever seen or even heard of a Pilot VP nib that looks like this one does? Image Link (because the site is being slow for me and I can't post the images here): https://imgur.com/a/1dceyCa Short Description: The nib has these sort of cut outs in the base, where the nib and feed join with the metal tube. The "wings" that wrap around the bottom of the feed and hold the nib and feed together are also different.
  3. So, I was just thinking over the state of my EDC pen flock, and noted that the one niche in my daily routine not yet filled by a fountain pen is a true pocket carry pen. My previous pen for this purpose, one of those Zebra compact telescopic ballpoints, has just been demoted from pocket carry status because its cap-top jewel had an annoying tendency to work itself loose once every couple of days, causing the jewel, the pen clip, and a washer under the cap jewel to fall off - into my pocket if I'm lucky, or more often, strewn on the sidewalk leaving me to retrace my steps for a good number of minutes. Hence, I'm now looking for a fountain pen that would be good as a pocket carry. First, let me describe the manner in which I usually use my pocket pens: > Manner of carry: clipped to shirt pocket (less often, as many of my shirts don't have pockets), or trouser pocket (more often), or a side pocket in my cell phone pouch (very often), or a small side pocket in my tablet computer pouch (also very often). The pen I pick as a pocket pen cannot be too thick, as the side pockets in my mobile phone and tablet pouches, in particular, are quite slim. (A TWSBI Mini is already too thick, for instance.) > Manner of use: mostly on-the-go jotting. This includes things like jotting down grocery and to-do lists while on the bus/subway, writing down random thoughts in my pocket notebook, the occasional journal writing outdoors when I carry just my journal and a pocket pen, and signing of documents and receipts when I have forgotten to bring my bag/pen case with me. > Other notes: I am mostly a bottled ink guy and do not much like cartridges, so I would not like a pen that is cartridge-only, although ability to use cartridges when needed is good, as I occasionally go on trips where it would not be convenient to bring a vial of ink, so I (grudgingly...) resort to cartridges. With these considerations in mind, I looked around and thought the Pilot Elite 95s, or the similar vintage Pilot Elite models, seemed a good fit for this use case. However, I also thought I should give some consideration to the Pilot Decimo, since many have recommended that pen as a pocket carry/utility/on-the-go pen as well. (The standard VP is too thick, so out of consideration.) To my mind, the pros and cons of each are as follows-- Elite 95s Pros: - Compact and slim, will fit into all of the locations I normally carry my pocket pens. - When posted, seems likely to be more comfortable for longer writing sessions due to its shape. Not that I expect to use my pocket pen frequently for long writing sessions, but when I journal outdoors, that is a consideration. - Many commentators have noted that the nib on this pen is very nice to write with. Cons: - Doesn't have the click-to-write convenience of the Decimo, one-handed use may be less convenient - Looks like it may not be as tough/durable as the Decimo? But that is only speculation based on how it looks... - Might be a little too pretty and eye-catching, not necessarily a good thing when used in places like on a bus or subway. - Not sure how durable the clip is- I have seen one review on Goulet Pens where someone said the clip broke off after a few days of use (!) Decimo Pros: - Click-to-write convenience, especially good when used one-handed - May be tougher and more durable than the Elite? But this is just speculation... - Clip looks stronger and more durable (also just speculation...) - Seems less likely to attract unwanted attention Cons: - Much longer than my usual pocket pens, would require significant changes in my usage and carrying habits (a major con, in my view.) - Fear of accidentally depressing the button and extending the nib - many have commented that this almost never happens in practice, but since I do carry my pocket pens in my trouser pockets, this fear still exists. - Less comfortable for long writing sessions. The clip position and design only bothers me a bit- I have an almost-standard tripod grip, but my thumb is typically placed slightly higher than my index finger, enough that it often rests on the side of the clip. Not enough to be a major turn-off, but it does start to annoy me a bit after writing for, say, more than ten minutes in one sitting. So what do you folks think? Any suggestions or comments on this? Or any other pens you think I should consider as well? (And before anyone mentions it- the Kaweco Sport series is not in my consideration because they are too thick, and the Liliput is also not in consideration because it is cartridge-only. Same goes for the vintage Sailor and Platinum pocket pens, the converters for which are no longer available.) Thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.
  4. Hello. I am hoping someone could answer a few questions about the VP & Decimo pens if able, for lack of seeing the pen in person before ordering, mainly about the nibs: 1-I am under the impression that the matte black VP in medium might be a lot wetter than the medium Decimo, something about the intended market. Is that correct? If so, how does the medium nib in the Decimo and the VP compare to, say, the Metropolitan medium? 2-If the VP & Decimo are different in actual nib size, are the special alloy (capless) and the Decimo 18k the same actual size? (That is, their mediums are the same, their fines same, etc) 3-Keeping the lower end Pilots in mind for comparison (Penmanship, Metropolitan, Prera), how do the extra fine and fine nibs on the VP and the Decimo compare with those (if you have tried them)? Is the VP xf the same as the Penmanship for example, or the fine Decimo the same as the Prera fine? Basically I am not sure whether to get a fine or a medium VP or Decimo, since I like my Prera with a fine nib, and my Metropolitan medium. For clarity, when I say VP I am referring to the matte black brass pen, when Decimo, to the aluminum with gold nib.

    Japan Exclusives

My daughter will be in Japan, outside of Tokyo, for some time and I would like to give her specific instructions on bringing me back pens. The yen is strengthening so I am more interested in pens that are exclusive to the Japanese market than in ones that might be cheaper over there. Is my best bet to give her a budget and tell her to get pens that are exclusive to the store she is in? She'll be there long enough to search out bungbox. I wouldn't mind a Decimo in a color we can't get stateside, either. Thanks everyone!
  6. Hi all I bought this Decimo last year with an EF nib. Never used it very much at all. I have learned that I don't prefer the narrow line of a japanese EF nib. So, last week while perusing Classic F Pens site, I thought why not try a John Mottishaw modified Architect Point (grind). Received it yesterday. Pilot E95S Vs Decimo

Hi, I'm planning a surprise gift for the wife by end of April. Which would you recommend, a Pilot E95s or a VP Decimo?
  8. I'm thinking of buying a Pilot Capless. However, I haven't seens a reliable comparison of the line widths. I have heard that the medium nib is like a European medium, but it varies quite a lot from pen to pen. Is this still the case. I have also heard that the fine nib is like a Japanese fine. This makes me consider the fine-medium nib, however it only come in one finish and is nearly twice the price of the standard finishes. I know it's quite a lot to ask, but... Does anyone have a comparison that shows the line widths? Preferably compared with Custom 74 medium and Metropolitan medium and fine. My Custom 74 medium is really nice, but I wish it put down a slight thinner line, more like my Metropolitan medium.

  10. According to Goulet Pens and Anderson Pens, the Pilot Decimo is coming to the US! I know I could always order online from Jetpens and vendors overseas, but this is still great news to have the Decimo finally officially here. I prefer the Decimo over the Vanishing Point as it's thinner, lighter and at least for me the clip is a much more comfortable design.
  11. Hello. I plan on buying an 18k VP (probably a Decimo) in the near future, and I am considering alternating between nib assemblies rather than whole pens because of high cost, since apparently it is easy to keep an inked nib assembly from drying out, ready to switch quickly, unlike with most nib switching in other pens. Anybody knows about good prices on VP nib assemblies? A not so recent review suggested they can be had for about $35, but I have not found anything for less than about $61, which is not far from a whole capless steel nib pen, and waiting patiently for some big discounts on a whole 18k pen seems persuasive considering current prices of the nib assembly. Any and all tips on better prices (lower than $61) much appreciated.
  12. Hi, I have some questions about the smoothness and fineness of nibs between Pilot Vanishing Point and Pilot Custom Heritage 92/Custom 74. I have Pilot Decimo with a fine nib and I like the smoothness and fineness of this nib, but it is little heavy for long writing. While I was searching for a smooth, lightweight, and fine fountain pen for long writing, someone has recommended me Pilot Custom Heritage 92. I see it has pretty good reputation in this forum. Thus, I would like to know more about the nibs of this pen. As I said, I like the fineness and smoothness of my Decimo fine nib. How is Pilot Custom Heritage 92 nib like comparing to Decimo nib? I see they have F, FM, M, and B nibs. I wonder if I should get F nib or FM nib for Pilot Custom Heritage 92. Also, is there any place to purchase Pilot #5 nib separately? I am asking this in case that I may not like the nib I order, and I am also interested in trying SF nib. Thanks,
  13. Hi, I have a new Pilot VP Decimo EF that I'd like to get a nice strong, smudge-proof, long lasting black ink for. I mostly wrote either in Field Notes notebooks, or Leuchtterm1917 notebooks. I'd very much appreciate any suggestions! Many thanks, pt
  14. Hi, After researching for my next fountain pen for long time, I have decided to get Pilot Decimo Dark Grey EX. However, one of the Japanese sellers that I contacted said that there is no Dark Grey with EX nib. I wonder if this is true. Is there anyone who knows a seller who sells Pilot Decimo Dark Grey with EX nib? I have checked Amazon, eBay, jetpens, and other websites but couldn't find it. Also, I see that some posts say Pilot VP nib and Pilot Decimo nib are interchangeable, and some other posts say that some adjustment should be done for Pilot VP nib to be used in Pilot Decimo. I wonder if there is anyone who has had this experience of swapping nibs between VP and Decimo. I am asking this in case there is no Decimo Dark Grey with EX, I would probably buy Decimo Dark Grey with F nib and purchase a EX nib separately. (I have seen there is VP EX nib sold online, but never seen Decimo EX nib sold online.) Thanks,
  15. Hello everyone, This is my first thread after having stalked the forum anonymously for quite some time. I'm buying a Pilot VP Decimo for note-taking in classes, and in the near future, at work. It will be an upgrade from a Sheaffer 100 with M nib as my second, more serious pen. (No grip problem for me) The questions are: 1. M or F nib: a line comparison from someone with Sheaffer M is appreciated, I will be writing a lot of mathematical equations on normal to poor quality paper. I'm leaning to F. 2. How glossy is the gray one: I prefer matted texture but if the glossiness is not really pronounced, it's acceptable. 3. Work condition: how well would the pen fare in a somewhat extreme environment, say, an oil rig in the middle east. 4. Ink: Parker Quink, Sheaffer Skrip, Sailor, and Waterman inks are readily available in my region. I have heard that only some inks work well with the pen. My preference: Blue, smoothness, some permanency. I have used Skrip Black to some degree of success, and I'd be pleased if the blue one works well. 5. Shop: Is j-subculture.com good? This deal looks really good: http://shop.j-subculture.com/items/detail/FEE0AEAC0BE27F1. If not, is there any recommendations? (Shipping to Asia) Thank you all in advance and sorry for any grammatical errors (I'm not a native user) Saran W.

    Pilot/ Namiki Nib

I own a beautiful Pilot/ Namiki "Capless" Vanishing Point pen- it's a Decimo, which is slightly slimmer and lighter than the regular VP pens, but takes the same nib- and I LOVE it. I have heard that the nibs for these pens are not well standardized. A few weeks after getting my pen, I broke the nib and had to replace it (rather a costly accident, but nevertheless). The nib size of my pen was, and is, a Fine; but I notice the new nib does not write quite as fine a 'Fine' line as the previous, original nib did. I liked the thinner line (didn't want to go to "Extra Fine", because I thought an EF nib might be too delicate- requires a light hand,) Is there a way I can have the nib adjusted? Would it cost as much, or nearly, as buying a whole new nib again? Any thoughts? thanks! - M

    Decimo Nib Section Leaking?

Hey guys, I bought a decimo from Japan's rakuten (had a friend recieve it in Japan for me ) and then when I put in the converter CON50 I think, the... metal bit got stuck when I tried to pull out the converter? I don't know how to get it out now. And now I'm worried it might be causing it to leak: It keeps smearing ink when I click it open. I don't know if this is because the ink is Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher, or whether it's from the converter issue. Should I try diluting the ink to see if that will fix the issue?
  18. Are the differences between the Pilot Vaishing Point and the Pilot Capless Decimo enough to justify the extra $100 for the Decimo?
