  1. From the album: Some of Mercian’s inks

A photo of the scrawl in my ink-testing book. This is a comparison of Diamine Chocolate Brown (top) with Waterman Havana (nowadays sold as Absolute Brown) underneath. At the bottom of the frame is some text in Parker Penman Mocha. My intent in this photo is to illustrate how ‘maroon’ the Havana appears to be.

    Robert Oster Chocolate

There was a big splashdown earlier this year with the Robert Oster Signature inks from Australia. Both Vanness and Anderson Pens carry the inks and Goulet Pens has the inks listed, but all out of stock, so they may well be waiting on their shipment to arrive. A number of people tried them and seemed to like them. Certainly it's a great boon for fountain pen users in Australia and Middle Earth (NZ) to have inks made right there in-country rather than expensively shipping them from the far corners of the world. One of the inks I received from an inky friend is RO Chocolate. You'd think a color with that name would be some kind of brown, but this is a kind of deep red. The dry times are fairly reasonable. Decent wetness, but wetter pens and nibs might be preferred depending on the look that you want. So if you like deep reds, this might be an ink for you, the shading is pleasant.

    Private Reserve Chocolat

Really lovely rich brown. Has a lot of depth to it. Writes really smooth. Great shading. Color really does look like chocolate. (Unfortunately, does not taste quite like chocolate. You've been warned.) Color bleeds in water, but has some trace remaining after the wet finger wipe. It leans more to the reddish end of brown, which you can definitely see in the water test. Dry time can be a little longer than some, particularly on slick or coated papers. Not a permanent brown, but the color and texture of this ink are a pleasure to write with. On my favorite browns list.
