    Pelikan Violet

Like the Pelikan Brown that I reviewed long ago, this ink was a solid performer. Good flow, no troubles with bleeding, skipping, or feathering. Not too saturated so that we can see some decent shading, but not so unsaturated that it becomes pale and hard to read. However, I am not a fan of this ink. For me it’s a purely personal thing in regards to the color - this shade has too much red for my liking. I like blue-violets vs. pure violets. Like the Pelikan Brown, there was not enough water resistance that I would trust important writing to this ink. Though I didn’t expect much since none of the Pelikan inks I have encountered to date have shown this characteristic. (Wow, I need to work on gluing my papers on straight!) Like I said before, this ink is a solid performer and handled a variety of papers well. However, it seemed to react in a funny way to my highlighter. At first it looked fine, but then it did that weird thing that you see above. I’m not sure if it’s because of the water resistance issue or a chemical in the highlighter I’m using (I use the Sharpie highlighter with “Smear Guard” for all my reviews), but it is worth noting. Overall, I think this is a well-behaved ink that is available for a pretty low price, ~$12/62 mL. Like I said, I don’t personally care for the color, but if you like the color and don’t need water-resistance, I’m not sure you could do much better for the price save perhaps a Noodler’s ink. For me, I have found my new favorite purple that you will see in my next purple ink review. :-) This ink was purchased with my own money and I am not being compensated for this review in any way. All opinions above are my own and you are free to disagree with them if you like. Full page scan of the review:

    Noodler's Mix De Lune

Hi there. This is my first post and effort, so please excuse any mistakes or errors. It is on the cheapest notebook paper. Like many, I've been seduced by J. Herbin's Poussiere de Lune, but was disappointed with its lack of waterproofness. Having a selection of Noodler's bulletproof, waterproof and semi-waterproof inks on hand as well as a painter's eye, I thought, why not? Here is my first effort at trying to replicate JHPDL with 4 Noodler's inks, a sample vial and blunt tipped syringe. the recipe (ALL Noodler's): North African Violet - 30 drops (or 1/2 ml) Black Swan In Australian Roses 9 drops #41 Brown 4 drops Fox (red) 2 drops It appears to be nice and shady, nearly waterproof, and no problems with the mixture itself. All can be done with a syringe, empty sample bottle and the four colors (in sample form) I think it's pretty close. (please note: I used a Lamy Safari with a 1.1 nib, dipped, not filled) What say you?
  3. So earlier this week I was finally able to purchase on of my personal Grail Pens...The Omas Ogiva Alba in Violet. Ever since I saw it on Goulet Pens I wanted this pen, especially since purple is my favorite color. I wasn't able to purchase it at the time. A couple of months pass and on a casual search I find that it's sold out almost everywhere and I was disheartened. I then found it on ebay from Tay from Pensinasia. I wasn't able to fully pay for it at the time and he graciously let me put down some money to hold the pen for me! A couple of weeks later, I managed to get the funds to fully pay for it and I finally was able to pay for it on the 2nd. Tay proceeds to ship it out on the 3rd and it was delivered to me today! 3 Day Shipping from across the world! Amazing! I waited all day today for the package to arrive and after calling the shipping company a couple of times, the package arrived right when I was about to leave my house. I delay my plans for an hour while I crack open the package, open the awesome Omas box and was finally able to hold the pen that I've wanted for a while in my hands. It's 33/327. I also was able to get the Extra Fine with the Extra Flessible nib. After I flushed the pen out, I inked it up with an ink that perfectly fits this pen, Bung Box Imperial Purple, and wrote with it on my Rhodia Ice pad. I was completely blown away with the writing experience. It's completely different from all the pens I own and I am loving it. The incredibly soft nib and the flex it provides gives me joy. My friend gave me some guff about spending that much money on the pen, but I was incredibly happy and pleased with my purchase. http://puu.sh/jrcUi/c7e6c9528d.jpg
  4. I love purple. It's my favorite color. I wish I had more purple fountain pens lol. I currently own a TWSBI Diamond 580 AL in Violet, a Platinum Plasir in violet and the Pilot Metropolitan Violet Leopard. I used to have a Violet Pilot Custom 74 Demonstrator until I lost it...I'm planning to get that pen replaced within the next couple of months. I also know that a Violet Pilot Custom 92 Demonstrator exists. I saw that Pen on eBay a couple of months ago and I neglected to snatch that up when I saw it...I really want that pen (If anyone knows any information about it being sold somewhere please PM me ASAP, Thanks lol). There's also a Sailor Pro Gear that comes in Blueberry and Purple that I know of. And I know that Pelikan is releasing the M205 in Amethyst soon. Outside of custom made pens, anyone else know of other Purple/Violet Fountain pens?
  5. Hello, So purple is my favorite color but I don't really like Brighter shades or red tinted purples. I tend to prefer darker shades of purple/violets and started liking blue tinged purple inks. I tried out Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu as one of my first purple inks and although I like it, It doesn't fit my preference for me to be using it everyday. I have tried out Diamine Eclipse and Diamine Grape. Diamine Eclipse seemed too dark and the purple barely seeps through and Grape is a little red tinged for my liking. The two inks that I have fallen in love with and actually use in daily usage is Sailor Jentle Shigure and Sailor Jentle Ultra Marine. Sailor Jentle Shigure actually fits my dark purple preference. I fell in love with that ink as soon as I started writing with it. It's easily my favorite ink. Ultra Marine for some reason speaks out to me even though it's a little bright. I consider it a blueish purple. Ultra Marine is my second favorite ink. These are the pens I have inked up with: Pilot Custom 74 in Violet - Sailor Jentle Shigure TWSBI Diamond 580 AL Violet - Sailor Jentle Ultra Marine Pilot Metropolitan - Sailor Jentle Ultra Marine I was thinking about trying Bung Box Ink of the Witch but that's a little hard to get. I was also thinking about Kobe Ink #32 Tamon Purple Gray, but I don't really know. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

    Toucan Violet Ink

Toucan Violet - the third-last in the range (not sure whether I'll bother with #14). The review below may seem a bit harsh - but honestly, the only thing I don't love about this ink is its colour (!). It's well-behaved, reasonably saturated, washes well out of my pens... I just, well, prefer a more 'brightly coloured' purple (or violet). The ink in the Platinum Preppy (see sample) is just about perfect for me - this colour seems 'flatter' by comparison. That said, Toucan Violet is a 'legitimate' colour in its own right - it reminds me of the flowers on a spray of lavender. You know the drill: manufactured by Tintex, only available for purchase in Australia and NZ (at least for now), but an amazing price - kind of makes up for the extra we have to pay on every stinkin' pen and ink and paper that has to be imported Down Under and sold at a ridiculous mark-up to boot ('Pardon my potty mouth'!, as Fix-It Felix Jr would say...). Here it is - scan only (unless someone asks for a photo), but I think this is reasonably accurate: http://i.imgur.com/prgY6Ct.jpg

    What's A Nice Bright Violet?

Up till now I've been focused on blues, but recently violets have been catching my eye. So what's a good violet ink? Do they have problems like red in terms of staining? Thanks!
  10. Ok. I'm probably unreasonably excited about this ink. Growing up, Periwinkle was my absolute favorite color from the Crayola box. I had hoped to find a good periwinkle color of ink when I got into fountain pens. But most of them don't look quite there. And Noodler's Eternal Periwinkle, I've heard doesn't really behave itself well. This ink was an accident as a result of a dye supplier change for one of the dyes in Pendemonium exclusive Violet Vote. Resulting in an almost perfect Crayola periwinkle blue. Sadly, according to Pendemonium, Nathan isn't going to make any more of this and it's just gone when gone, as he's working on getting his color reformulated back for regular Violet Vote. This ink flows smoothly on the paper. It's not what I'd call a wet ink. Rather a more thick feeling smooth ink. Not really a shading ink either. At least, not in the fine nib I was using. It may have some in a stub. Completely unmoved by the water. In fact, if the paper weren't a little wrinkly where it got wet, I couldn't be able to tell. Dries fast. Under 10 sec on Rhodia. No feathering or bleeding on the Rhodia pad at least. Nathan, tell me again why this isn't going to be a regular issue? Please? I took pictures of the ink review under my Ott Light last night to try and get as close colors as I could. I'll add a scan later. In the comparisons box I only had Iroshizuku Ajisai on hand of the other erstwhile periwinkles. I do plan on adding the Herbin Bleu Pervenche to my ink stable pretty soon, but a quick image search will show that while it's a nice enough color, it's different. And the reference
  11. Ok. This is another really good one. I officially like all four of the Pendleton's inks series. Good shading, wet flow. Really nice colors. This one is a dark purple color with nice shading. A purple-black. I wish I had Diamine Eclipse to compare it to. Looks like I really dig dark purple inks. Much more than lighter violet colors. This is going to join my top inks in regular rotation.

    Akkerman 13 Simplisties Violet

Another Akkerman. Another nice ink. And another shout out to amberleadavis as thanks! This one has nice shading. It's a saturated, deep purple. Still a bright color. Has some nice shading. And good flow. A wet flowy ink. If Akkerman is indeed the same as Diamine ink -- which is still in the mystery closet for now -- this one looks close to Amethyst, Lavender, or my guess would be Imperial Purple.

    Organics Studio Jane Austen Violet

Here's another purple ink from Organics Studio. This one seems a little bit more on the red side of violet when it's going down, but it quickly changes to a more medium purple. It's still a bit more red than most purple/violet inks I have. It's not quite as pinkish seeming in real life (once it's dried) as the scan shows. Has the same good flow as the rest of Organics Studio's main line. Not really water resistant, but can handle small splashes. Not my color. But if you like bright flowery colors, this could be a good one for you.

    Noodler's Purple Wampum

This ink goes down a little lighter purple, and dries a little grayer. On some papers, it looks like a gray-purple. It's a pretty and unusual color. A fairly unique color. It's got good flow and water resistance. No feathering. It's on my list to get a bottle. Not the top of the list, but I like it.
  15. Dear fellow pen appreciators, I have managed to score a couple of rather old pelikan and rotring fountain pen inks, and though I read numerous topics about the decades long shelf life of Scheaffer inks and a few bad experiences with PR inks, does anyone have any experience with these specific brands? I think they are 20 years old or older(they have the older pelikan logo wit the 2 schematic nestlings, plus they are marked as made in west germany...), and the rotring is probably the same age as well. Should I be worried about using them? Apart from slime and mold is there sth else I should look for? Also would anyone recommend putting i na drop of phenol into the bottles, even yet unopened ones which might sit on the shelf for another year or so? There are no visible problems, but I'm particularly worried since they have 60ml in them which won't be used up too fast. Also colours like violet will be used once every 2 months or so. That means it won't stay closed, but won't be used up too fast either. Since the rotring ones don't seem to be common I'll try to post reviews and examples of the colours I have sometime next week
