  1. I have been trying to figure out the De Atramentis Brown Inks (especially the cooler end) for a while. An earlier thread is here. Having added a few more since, including, to me, a couple of real winners, and having found it impossible to find reviews for some of these elsewhere, I thought it worth making an updated record here. The De Atramentis inks are numbered, the marginalia are for reference. Being De Atramentis, each of these may be available under a variety of names, and some of the names may even get switched around - my only goal here is to provide a "first taste"!

    Grain In The Beard

From "Seasonal Terms", a range in the same line and octagonal bottles as "Ancient Charm" (but without the shimmer) - so is that Pen BBS? Last year at the LA Pen Show I picked up "Beginning of Spring" (like Alt-GoldGrun but browner - the bottom row in the illustration) and "Beginning of Summer", both of which are rather nice, but "Grain in the Beard" was sold out. One year later and perseverance pays off! Now why was it again that the Mesopotamians turned from hunter-gatherers to farming?
  3. 3 De Atramentis Brown Inks that I couldn't find distinguished elsewhere. Umber : Havanna : York Brown (with a few other tobacco leaves thrown in)

    Toucan Umber

Toucan is an Australian ink producer, I think they mostly distribute the inks in pouches to save on shipping which is expensive in Australia. Also reminiscent of those marsupials that roam around their country Umber is an interesting and unusual brown. Totally not waterfast at all. The least waterfast I've found. Not waterfast at all, and doesn't even leave much ink behind in the wash. The most interesting aspect of the ink is its unusual dye mix.
  5. Hey everyone, Cybaea did a fabulous review on the recently released Diamine Autumn Oak (which is gorgeous and is worth a look) And when I saw it for sale at Stylus Pens in Edmonton this weekend I decided to pick up a bottle to do some comparisons. So here we go! Noodlers Apache Sunset and Diamine Autumn Oak here is a quick review of NAS here is a quick review of DAO and here they are side by side (not the best quality, I took these with my phone camera) So there they are. My thought is that they have very similar reddish properties but the yellow is brighter in NAS, whereas the yellow in DAO is more earthy and orangy-brown. But very similar! What do you think?

    Toucan Umber Ink

This is post #9 in my series of reviews on the Toucan ink range - produced by Tintex, a.k.a. Dye Manufacturers of Australia. These inks are available (as of yesterday) either in a plastic pouches (30 or 60 ml) or in 30 ml glass bottles from the distributor - though it looks like the larger (400 ml) pouches are no longer on offer (see www.justwrite.com.au for details). I've had a difficult time trying to describe this ink - as you'll see in the images below. It's definitely not a reddish-brown, nor is it yellow-ish; I'd call it 'muddy' but that might sound like an insult; while 'chocolate' brown, 'coffee' brown don't quite capture it either. Have a look for yourself - and let me know if you can think of a better comparison! The photo first, this time around: http://i.imgur.com/1B3maKa.jpg And the scan: http://i.imgur.com/vMFJnz7.jpg
