  1. I posted a couple of weeks ago about the Robert Oster ink exclusive that will be a part of the Hippo Noto Kickstarter campaign, because I was lucky enough to get a sample of it to test out. But I'm impatient because I'd really (really) like to try out the notebooks. I go through journals at a fast clip because mine are a way to capture what's going on in my life, the things occupying my brain, any data points I want to take note of, etc. etc. Anyway, I go through paper. Also because I love playing with inks (oh, those colors) and that takes paper. None shows off inks better than Tomoe River, and that's the real beauty of these. Not only will they come in your choice of plain, lined and dot grid, but there are an abundance of pages. I have several projects I would like to start using these for today, but I have to wait until the orders get mailed out during the summer. I would rather not have to be patient... Anyway, I did post the earlier pictures of the ink in action, and have not seen these notebooks, but there are still eight days left to jump in before the campaign closes. I'm not sure if we'll have a chance to order more of these later (i do hope so) but the best way to get your hands on one is to back this campaign at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2016143253/hippo-noto-a-hippo-size-tomoe-paper-notebook?ref=project_share
  2. Hi All, First time posting on here. I have recently become fascinated with the fountain pen and paper realm. Curious if anyone has seen my dream notebook? !!WANTED!! B5 Threadbound Hardcover 90+ sheets FP Friendly paper (obvious no?) Dot Grid Multiple ribbons Numbered pages 81 - 100 gsm 10-20 perforated pages If not? How do I find a manufacturer to create this unicorn notebook? I appreciate all your advice in advance. Best, Oscar
  3. Hi folks, I have just finished my A5 Taroko dot notebook when it hit me...I don't know a lot about the brand or the makers... Quick nosy Google search took me to their Etsy and Facebook page, but that did not satisfy my curiosity. Stationery world is very personal, the notebooks are a hit, so I have reached out to Steven to share something of his background and love of stationery. I hope you will find this interesting...I had a great time chatting and geeking out with him. Enjoy! Interview Tell me a little about your background. What was the impulse to start making your own notebooks? We're a small studio based in Taipei, Taiwan, and our story really started with the purchase of my first fountain pen, a Pilot Kakuno, several years back. With the fountain pen in hand, I was surprised at the difficulty of finding the right paper/notebook products in the market to use the fountain pen with. One thing lead to another (trying lots of different paper+pen combinations) and we've managed to secure three types of fountain pen friendly paper to make products with: Tomoegawa 52 and 68 gms, and our own Taroko Orchid paper at 80gsm. The mission is really to provide more choices to fountain pen users where most paper products cater to the rollerball/gel pen usages. What's the story behind your studio? After my earlier career in tech (product manager for notebooks and mobile phones), I decided to pursuit an industrial design degree. While taking the degree program, classmate at the time is my current studio partner Wenwen Liu. We decided to group up and start the studio a few months before graduation to keep the learning process going, by taking on projects as a team. Our past projects included graphic and floor plan design for photography exhibitions, souvenirs for tourist centers, and product branding and packaging. The creation of notebooks under the Taroko brand gives us the freedom of implementing our ideas (versus having to adhere to client design guidelines), as well as choosing the type of material that goes into our notebooks. How did you come up with the brand name? Taroko is named after Taroko Gorge in my hometown of Hualien. Most people would think of Taiwan as an industrialized island packed with 20 million people, but there are still natural wonders on the eastern portion of the island. We will be incorporating elements from Taroko National Park into our notebooks in the future. Here are some references on Taroko Gorge/National Park: http://www.earthtrekkers.com/taroko-national-park/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taroko_National_Park What would you be making if not notebooks? Leathercrafts. Love the experience of making things by hand that will age well with usage. An important lesson from design school days is to always make things with your hand, draw with pen and pencils, and suppress the urge to jump right into Photoshop or a 3D rendering program. So we are always cutting and binding paper during our prototyping stage. What do you attribute the success and/or demand for stationery today to? The product has to deliver a kind of "experience" to the customer, from the weight of the notebook, suprisingly light to unexpected heft. The touch of the materials used, and the subtle feedback of the nib sliding across the paper. It is a difficult balance to hold between achieving that unique experience and manufacturing constraints in delivering products, but I believe that's what most leading brands are striving to achieve. What’s your favourite item of stationery in your personal collection? It's a little folding hand knife I bought in Nishiki market in Tokyo, and I use it to sharpen pencils with. The knife is handcrafted by a Japanese artisan, and when I use it to sharpen pencils, it serves as a reminder of the trip, as well as liberate the aroma from the pencil wood. And finally - what is your current paper+pen+ink combo? Tomoe River paper 68gsm (of course) with Pilot Justus 95 filled with Sailor Seasons Yama-dori (teal blue). The Pilot Justus 95, with its adjustable nib hardness, is perfect for when I need to write interchangeably between English and Chinese. And the Yama-dori gives a wonderful red sheen on Tomoe River paper. Thanks to Steven for sparing his time to give this great interview. We wish you and Taroko Design best of luck. Mishka (^_~)
  4. Hey pals this is a group buy/interest check for Tomoe River A4 52gsm paper (white from here: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/auc-shikisai/item/50602/ ) It costs $105 CAD + ~$150 CAD shipping (TBA) for 4000 quality pieces. Which comes to $31.87 per batch of 500 sheets. PRICE LADDER (per 500 sheets at each tier=4000 sheets.) 1) $31.87 2) $22.50 So ideally, we get more local pals to sign up, we get a better deal . Feel free to split ream costs with your local friends as well! This paper is super nice, smooth, & light; I'm interested in it for book-binding and making my own sketch paper! A large majority of fountain pens and inks do not bleed or feather on this paper. It's the same stuff that's in Hobonichi journals. I'll make a post later once we get enough people to commit at a good price. THIS IS TORONTO-BASED, I can deliver the paper during my time off this semester/we can schedule a meetup! If anyone knows how to order 68gsm in bulk, let me know! So far it's only 52gsm; ideally it'd be 68gsm since most people I know are artists and prefer a bit thicker paper, but I'm perfectly happy with 52gsm too. We're getting a fairly good rate at the moment. If you're interested, please add your information in the google document; it's only a solid interest check for now: aka, you're generally committing to your interest, but if you need to back out of your purchase later then please let me know ASAP. This will be open until the maximum of 8000 pages is reached (due to shipping weight limits).
  5. *** CLOSED since we have reached our 2 x 4000 limit! Thanks everyone for the interest! Will open if people drop out. Crossposted from the Paper & Paraphernalia section. 6. Notes - Having produced a nicely formatted article in LibreOffice Writer, I found that the only way to transfer that to the FPN without losing the formatting was to save the pages as JPG, and attach the images. The photos of the products are arranged alphabetically as they are first mentioned, so you know what to look for if you want to get any of the products. I will try to add some scans of representative bleeding and feathering examples.
  7. Hi, I am planning to import Tomoe River paper from Japan. In case any of you are interested, let me know and i can perhaps order for you as well. Specifications: Size: A4 Colour: White/Cream (as majority decides) Thickness: 68gsm (normal is 52gsm, this is more expensive and has less showthrough as compared to 52gsm) Expected Price: INR 11-12 per sheet I will only place the order once i have confirmation of people taking 4000 sheets. Edit: To avoid any confusion, this group buy is only for Indians living in India. I don't have Paypal to accept money from abroad and neither do i want to fill customs forms for it Any postage cost incurred for postage inside India would be borne by you. If you are in Delhi or Mumbai, you can collect it at any of the meets.

    Hobonichi 2017 Techo Planner

We are expecting the Hobonichi Techo Planner 2017 in the Sakura FP Gallery soon ! Order now, delivery from oct/nov. http://www.sakurafountainpengallery.com/en/boutique/detail/hobonichi-2017-techo-planner Sincerely, Catherine
  9. I have ordered Tomoe River sheets, 68gsm from eBay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Heavyweight-68gsm-Tomoe-River-Fountain-Pen-Paper-A4-140-White-Sheets-/331905728551?hash=item4d471f8027:g:kdsAAOSwVFlUFBk8 I have just tried it, it is completely different than Tomoe River 52gsm or 68gsm from Taroko Design Notebook. It feathers heavylly, terrible bleedthrough, no sheen, lots of absorption, about a minuite of an ink splash, it is dry, original tomoe river - even after five minutes it is wet. ..... It came in a box in a unsealed plastic sack, can noit verify authenticity. Anyone else made an order from this seller? Good Experience? First four photos, received product, remaing photoes, original TR.
  10. So I've been using my 500 pack of Tomoe River paper, among other things to make summaries of tech books I need for work... I have a Clairefontaine sleeve with elastic straps but it's a bit tight, any ideas? Tomoe river is slightly taller than A4. I'd like something better than a plain folder to keep them from falling. Thanks!
  11. I love my TN, I love Tomoe River paper. I want to be able to use both at once. Has anyone found any source of Traveler's Notebook regular-sized inserts made from Tomoe River paper? I've been Googling, but the only things I've found are tutorials for binding your own inserts - unfortunately I am a giant klutz and can be guaranteed to gratuitously mess up any attempt at cutting and sewing paper I start. (Believe me. I've tried.) Now, I'm pretty sure the answer is "no, nobody is making such a thing" - but I'd love it if you could prove me wrong!
  12. I have both cream and white available, in 70 sheet packs. PM me for more details.
  13. Hi Folks Hope you are all doing well. I recently came across a slightly thicker version of the original Tomoe River paper at 68 gms and found it quite fascinating and an interesting alternative to the much loved 52 gms version. As such, I decided to send out some free sheets to some of you and feedback was very positive. I decided to work on some Notebook samples and to gauge some feedback prior to deciding to move forward. I have some A4 sheets in the 68gms paper which I can send you for free (3 sheets each), you just need to pay for the shipping, I am not looking to make any money here. The only thing I ask from you is your honest candid feedback please. Have a Joyous Xmas and Prosperous New Year! Izzy
  14. I am assuming this should go in this section rather than inky thoughts. That said, being new, I encourage and will not be offended at all if this gets moved to inky thoughts. Okay, I just ordered my 2015 Hobonichi Planner and was wondering what ink and/or nib combos you find work best in any kind of accessory that uses TR paper? Is there an ink that you think works best? Is it wrong to assume F and/or EF nibs are the way to go given the size of the planner? By all means, this is not meant ONLY for ppl using Hobonichi products. I am as interested in any combo that works well with any other A6-sized product. Thanks! Cheers ~ Jack
  15. Hi There, I have made a small batch of regular size inserts for the midori traveler's notebook system with 68gsm Tomoe River paper. There are two layouts available, sold line grid and dotted line grid. The layouts are press printed (not home printer), and therefore the lines clear and crisp. If you are interested, you can purchase from the link below: <<LINK removed by Moderator>> (please provide regular links, not shortened ones, for security reasons) I would appreciate it if you can give me some feedbacks, as I will be making another batch in late February, in field notes size. Thanks! Steve
  16. About three months ago in August, I rediscovered my want to restart my calligraphy practices (which weren't much). I am a student with a small job, which is enough for me to buy some pens and pen paraphernalia left and right, while also trying to save up for things like a Mac and possibly a car (which will probably never happen). I bought my first pen, the Pilot Plumix, and fell in love with fountain pens. It followed with two Jinhaos, a Kaweco Sport, a Pilot Metropolitan, and about three months, 5 bottles of ink and 13 pens in total later, I am absolutely a pen lover! I bought Rhodia DotPads and discovered the importance of paper to ink, and then discovered Tomoe River. And so, to the PIF, I recently discovered that I had a sample of unopened, brand new Tomoe River paper from JetPens. This paper is white and included are 5 sheets, size A5. I am giving the sample away because I recently got a lovely CRV from amberleadavis which came with some extra sheets paper, as well as bought myself some correspondence paper from paperforfountainpens(dot)com. This PIF is for the CONUS. I would prefer this to go out to a Newbie who is brand new to fountain pens, college student/high school student who is on a budget and cannot afford paper, or a person who has never tried Tomoe River paper before.. I will draw using random.org TBA when this gets a decent amount of entries. Please state how you got into Fountain Pens, how long ago, why you would like to try Tomoe River etc and I will draw from those entries! (PS - free shipping)
  17. I finally have my own Tomoe River paper. I got to briefly try some a few weeks ago and was amazed, so I purchased this bound, blank, white book from Paper for Fountain Pens. Here's my review... Thoughts that are neither good nor bad: Tomoe River Paper is thin. Tissue paper thin. The white color is not bright white, but it is plenty white enough for me - about as white as... tissue paper. What I really like: It is absolutely smooth. No bleed through or feathering AT ALL, but there is good amount of ghosting. If the ghosting doesn't bother you writing on both sides of the paper is easy. The book is about two thirds as thick as a Leuchtturm1917 hardbound journal but has 62 more pages. The navy blue cover feels like great quality and paired with the little red binding stitches it looks really good. Also, Check out the sheen on the word Breaking in the picture. That ink is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo and I have never seen it sheen like that. Must be from the slow dry times which allows the ink to pool and get really concentrated. What I don't like: Dry times are too slow. I have to let the page sit open or it will mark the reverse page when closed. I have a good size piece of blotting paper that I will try to keep in this book. The size is small - about half an inch taller and about half inch more narrow than a Leuchtturm1917 hardbound journal. Because the paper is so thin and the book is sort of small I really need to sit at a desk to use it. Using this book at funny angles like in bed can put my hand in a funny position and with my needle point flex Falcon I stabbed through a page twice - I think because my hand was really low while doing some Copperplate type stuff. It's a "lay flat" design, but it could "lay flatter" in my opinion - especially since it is a narrow book. Also, because the paper is so thin it is really easy to leave an impression on the next page. I see the impression, but so far they don't bother me once I finally get to that page. You have to really look hard. How I would improve this product: BIgger! Offer three sizes - this version, one about an inch bigger all around and maybe a full letter size that is perforated. And if Tomoe River offered a version of this stock that was a hair thicker for durability this paper game would be over. Do I recommend this product? YES! everyone needs to try some Tomoe River paper. This particular book has a high quality cover that is very simple, yet very well done. For $30 I'm VERY glad I purchased this version of Tomoe River binding. It will probably last me a looooong time and it pairs well with my other favorite bound paper - the small Fabriano soft cover books (great for thin lines, strong paper, sort of like a thin bristol board and only $3.99). A very minor detail, but one I really like is how PPFP packages the books. He wraps them in Tomoe River paper, so it gave me a good amount of nice scraps to get going before I marked in the book. My goal is to make every page in this book worth looking at. I have many other soft bound blank books (Apica, Leuctturm, Fabriano, Scout, HP Laser) that are 80% scribble garbage done just to see how a pen works. I'm determined to actually produce something nice in this one.
  18. UK GROUP BUY – TOMOE RIVER (TOMOEGAWA) A4 PAPER Good morning. I’m organising a group purchase of A4 sheets of Tomoe River paper from Japan. If you aren’t familiar with Tomoegawa, it is silky, smooth lightweight (52gsm) paper, perfect for use with fountain pens. Originally produced as a quality print paper, to reduce the weight of high page volume printed matter, it was discovered that this paper is also ideal for use with fountain pens. I have found that it takes practically every ink/pen combination I’ve used on it, without feathering or bleed-through. Because of its thinness this paper does exhibit some ghosting (show-through) with wet, dark inks. However, I successfully write on both sides of this paper and even use drawing pens and light applications of watercolours on it. For many, this is their ultimate letter and journal writing paper. For others’ opinions about this paper just search this site for reviews. Expressions of Interest This post is to gather expressions of interest from FPN members in the UK. I am also happy to include European members, subject to additional postage costs, via Royal Mail. The paper will be A4 size, colour white, in multiples of 100 sheets. (Note that Tomoe paper is off-white rather than the bright white of Clairefontaine or Oxford Optik). The final price will be dependent on import VAT and any other charges applied on entry to the UK, but my current provisional estimate is approx. £9 per 100 sheets, inclusive of postage within the UK via Royal Mail standard service. Prices for over 300 sheets may vary due to postal weight bandings. This price compares extremely well with the few UK retailers that sell this paper. Initially there will be 3,000 sheets available i.e. 30 ‘packs’ of 100. Dependent on the number of people interested in participating in this group buy, the total quantity available for each participant may need to be capped, to ensure fair access. If you are interested in participating please send me a PM, indicating the quantity you are interested in buying (in multiples of 100). You should contact me by no later than Friday 4th December. Please note that payment will be via PayPal and cleared payment will be required in advance of despatch of the paper to you. I will update this post with status of the group buy after the above cut-off date.

    Using A Seven Seas Notebook

I picked up a Seven Season Writer A5 Journal this week (4th edition). It arrived surprisingly quick and well-packaged. It looks absolutely amazing as I paged through it and I can't wait to begin using it but I promised myself I'd finish off my current journal before beginning a new one. But, I got to thinking--do I want to use it for journaling or something else entirely? Time to brainstorm; perhaps you're willing to share your ideas. For what purposes do you have/use/recommend a dedicated notebook?
  20. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kArqVhs6dsE/VaMcEMD5S8I/AAAAAAAACWc/YZ6ODk7tkpM/s1600/IMG_9263_R.jpg Greetings, FPN fellows!Today I wanted to share with you two books that I made for Esther, a member of this community. They were one of the last custom orders that I made from the first 2000 sheets that I bought of Tomoe River (and I wanted to thank the community, since it was a pretty big success and I run out of paper really quickly - but I will order some again on November ). Esther asked me to make two journals for her. They were both a present from her boyfriend for her birthday. The first one was a springback journal, a sturdy and durable binding. It was approximately 21 x 15 cm (A5 or half letter size) and it had 200 pages (400 counting both sides; normally would be 400 pages or 800 counting both sides, but I didn't have enough paper left) of that white Tomoe River paper that all of us love. I used a gorgeous purple leather. I really love the shades that the color acquires once I work on it. It goes from deep, royal purple to a subtle, pale violet. It has some sort of soul and character. That's one of the things that I love from working with leather. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E5SM-gHUkEw/VaMcSXC7BfI/AAAAAAAACXQ/bE2GRmJL5kg/s1600/IMG_9269_R.jpg She chose paste paper that I handmade for her endpapers. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4_GIxf7C0lc/VaMcSBZHmMI/AAAAAAAACXM/UA6DUeVOhpw/s1600/IMG_9267_R.jpg The headbands were also sewn by me. I tried to make the best combination possible to match the rest of the journal, so all makes a whole. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y0p5jph1zjU/VaMcSKUFluI/AAAAAAAACXE/zikcNeeQY3U/s1600/IMG_9271_R.jpg She wanted to have her name "Esther Steele" blind tooled on the cover of the book. As you can see, the stamp goes deep, and adds texture to the cover. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QiHg_yU98jo/VaMcNNxsipI/AAAAAAAACWo/XQb51zt9g3Q/s1600/IMG_9265_R.jpg Finally, she asked me to make a box for it. I used purple cloth for the outsides and white velvet for the inside. In this way, the journal will feel more like a present, but also will be protected so it can last a lifetime. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fDtihXAI5V8/VaMcN9aI-QI/AAAAAAAACW0/ajH1Me3l95w/s1600/IMG_9259_R.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eh8FcXj-JgI/VaMcN95CPJI/AAAAAAAACW4/q_W0nqJY4WM/s1600/IMG_9262_R.jpg For the second journal, she chose a Ethiopian style. It also was approximately 21 x 15 cm and had 200 pages (400 counting both sides) of cream Tomoe River paper. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--xvg7FXW5tI/VaMe-8GMuKI/AAAAAAAACX0/Vj3Om6tN-TI/s1600/IMG_9252_R.jpg She wanted a combination of brown leather with Bomoart paper, and hold together by a brown elastic band. The Bomoart paper that she chose is one of my favorites. It has some vintage, nostalgic feel to it. I think it goes wonderful with the brown orangish leather. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6YvDiHTlNww/VaMfAVvWXiI/AAAAAAAACYE/eoD5HgZ8U_8/s1600/IMG_9255_R.jpg Here you can see the nerves on the spine of the journal. It feels great to stroke the leather and feel the bumps. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MXyGhRm23cg/VaMforiOy6I/AAAAAAAACYI/IvttgX_DSt0/s1600/IMG_9257_R.jpg Since the cover was already quite full, I advised her to go for a simple endpaper. This is a Canson cardboard. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QqTSDBXITOY/VaMfAWbQvkI/AAAAAAAACYA/zOA-szT_h9A/s1600/IMG_9253_R.jpg She also wanted a box to keep her journal safe. This one was made with beige cloth, brown velvet for the inside and some of the same Bomoart paper for the top. Again, the combination gives a sense of unity to the box and the journal. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sabf22faSmw/VaMe726wVdI/AAAAAAAACXo/pTbiJbgyWwo/s1600/IMG_9248_R.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ePmA8PtwuME/VaMe8cIX8cI/AAAAAAAACXs/1h5ZOyBwCHc/s1600/IMG_9250_R.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U75UFjKB9vQ/VaMe6BpYBaI/AAAAAAAACXc/unWoXH4mgFM/s1600/IMG_9247_R.jpg Well, that was a long post, but I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any comments or questions, I will be happy to answer them. Thank you for reading. Have a nice week!! Anna
  21. Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right place ( I checked marketwatch, and wasn't able to post there), but I recently purchased 100 sheets of Tomoe River paper, and liked it so much that I started researching options for buying in bulk. It appears that the parent company in Japan will only sell it in very large amounts and, then, shipping becomes cost prohibitive. To that end, I started a poll on Massdrop to see if anyone else might be interested in acquiring larger quantities of the paper than are currently available. There is no group buy or "drop" yet; this is strictly to gauge interest. I've only purchased through the company once, for the Emerald of Chivor drop, and my experience was a good one. So, if you're interested, and can take the time to vote, please do so. You can also add other options... You can see the poll here: https://www.massdrop.com/vote/Tomoe-River-Paper-by-the-ream The customer service team told me that they're researching this, and if the interest is there, will try to make it happen. Thanks for reading!!

    Journal Writing Mats

So I've been checking frequently for the hard writing mats at Nanamipaper.com for my tomoe river journal. So far no luck at catching it on stock. I was wondering if anyone knows of a writing mat I could use, preferably an a5 soft one. Writing on the journal is nor uncomfortable, but I just hate to have that ghosting of what I was writing on the page before it.
  23. Finally got my 500 sheet package of Tomoe River from Nanami paper: they delivered very quickly but I had to wait until someone could bring it from California to Mexico. It's a pleasure to write with this paper, even my Kaweco Sport writes more smoothly. Everything that has been said is true, it lives up to the hype: smooth, no feathering, thin, no bleed through. The 500 sheet package weighs 2.4 kg (5.2. kg for the metrically challenged) which is quite heavy. The only downside is my friends are now sure I'm certifiable. If you're going to do something crazy like buying japanese paper in another country why not go all the way and go for the big package?
