  1. Greetings Everyone, What do you use to store you fountain pens, case, cigar boxes, store bought cases and holders, trays? Do you make them yourself? How do you make them? Thanks

    New Pen Case!

So, I got a pen case from easylivingus - a great, reliable seller who is based in China but ships from the UK. Not entirely sure how they manage it, but you get stuff within the week rather than the month! I'd previously ordered a 10 pack of Hero 616s that I use as competition prizes at school. Anyway, I wanted a new pen case and didn't want to pay through the nose, so I ordered one of these for £13.50 with free shipping. OK, so it's pleather and looks a little cheap (which it is) but it's sturdy on the outside and soft on the inside! Some pictures: http://i.imgur.com/IK1PACi.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AEcg7WM.jpg And, since you asked, from top left: Cross Apogee (medium), Italix Parson's Essential (broad stub), Jinhao X750 (broad, I think), Kaweco Skyline Sport (medium), Kaweco Classic Sport (BB), Lamy Safari (1.1mm italic), Noodler's Nib Creaper, Noodler's Ahab, Parker 45 ballpoint, Parker UK Duofold Junior (soft fine), Parker IM Premium (medium), Parker 51 (medium), Parker 45 (medium), Parker Sonnet (medium), Pelikan Souveran M600 (medium), Pelikan M200 (broad italic), Pilot MR (medium), Pilot Plumix, Platinum Plaisir (medium), Platinum Preppy (fine), Platinum Preppy highlighter, TWSBI Diamond 580 (1.1mm stub), TWSBI Diamond Mini (1.1mm stub), TWSBI Vac 700 (1.5mm stub).
  3. Okay, this might be a rather dumb question, but when one purchases a pen and it comes in a box, do you always keep the box? I have lots of pen boxes (some still storing the pens, others empty and some empty with booklets and paperwork) of those pens that I've purchased new in the past 25 years. Obviously, vintage pens or those "found", pen show purchased, swapped, etc. usually are boxless, but does the box on some pens make them anymore valuable? You realize that if this addiction hobby continues, I could easily acquire MORE boxes and that would require MORE storage space! Like I said, dumb question, but I'd be curious what others do. Tell me.....
  4. I'm still new to the hobby, but I decided my small collection could use a decent home. A couple of weeks ago, I swung into a local cigar shop and they gave me one of the empties. After a couple weeks in the garage, the smell of tobacco had mostly dissipated, so I moved on to the next phase. Supplies were pretty basic and available around the house or after a quick trip to the local Michael's craft store... - black foam sheet - 3/8" dowels - sheet of stick-on green felt - double-sided tape I used the foam sheet as padding underneath. I cut two pieces to size and trimmed them for a close fit. I measured out and cut the dowels that would build the spacers. To help position them in the box, I laid a couple strips of double-sided tape onto the foam. Then I experimented with the spacing between dowels. The tape kept them from rolling around freely, but I could easily reposition them if needed. I ended up with about 7/8" between the centers. With all the dowels in place, it was time for the felt. The sticky layer on that felt was strong! The approach of having a foam sheet as a base layer, rather than working directly on the base of the box, turned out to be fortuitous. It was going to be almost impossible to get that stick-on felt pressed down into position neatly without bumping my dowels around if I had been working inside the box. The sides were really that tall, but the glue layer on the felt was unforgiving. Instead, I pulled out the layer of foam, readjusted the dowels I bumped, and worked outside the box. Starting at one edge and working across, it was just a matter of rolling the felt on and pressing it in around the dowels. My daughter gave some light pressure on the back edge of each dowel to keep it from rolling as I pressed the felt onto and around it. Once the felt was on and some slight overlaps trimmed up, it was just a matter of inserting the completed base back into the box. I now have room for up to 7 pens (currently my TWSBI Mini, Pilot Metropolitan, Pilot 78G, and Shaeffer 440) and some extra space to the side for some ink samples. For minimal cost and under a couple hours of effort, I'm pretty happy with it!
  5. If there is already a section for this, please let me know. I have yet to find one though on Storage and Organization for fine writing tools and materials. It would be nice to have a section for this for people to ask questions in reference to storage and organization, pose ideas, tips, or tricks, post photos of how they organize and store things, and attach instructional files, such as a word document, to their post if they should wish to do so. Just a thought Again, please let me know if a section such as this exists. Thanks! ~gracefulpen
  6. I've been looking for a way to use the last drops of ink in bottles but other than a syringe I couldn't think of a way, for cartridge pens a syringe is fine but for piston pens I was stuck. I also wanted a safe way to take small amounts of ink out with me so I could refill if necessary without the hassle of carrying syringes etc. The other day I was watching a science programme on TV and saw the scientists using a centrifuge and putting little cone shaped tubes in the machine, I wondered if you could buy them and found that you there's loads available on ebay. You can even buy storage boxes for the tubes which hold 100 for under £5 The shape of the tubes makes me think that a pen nib would fit inside and as the tubes are plastic they shouldn't damage a nib, the only problem I can see is that the cones shaped tubes only seem to be available up to 1.5ml which is probably ok for one fill but ideally a capacity of 5ml would be better, having said that the 1.5ml tubes are so cheap(around £10 per 100) that you could just spread the ink into 3 tubes. I'm wondering if anyone has tried using centrifuge tubes for their ink?

    Wooden Boxes

Hi there So, my question for today is: does anyone know where you can get wooden boxes for storing ink bottles, and pens that aren't in use? I saw some on Hobbycraft's website but they might be too small, I'm going there tomorrow to have a look. Note: Suggesting cigar boxes is a no-go, there's nowhere round here that would have them.
