  1. I just started trying to fix older pens and in one my ebay grab bags I got Sheaffer 875 balance vac fill. (I had no idea what I was getting into. Lol) So I soaked it for a couple days, got the section unscrewed without breaking anything, the nut came off the rod easily enough, and I got the packing unit out in tact. So here's where I need help. 1. What exactly do I need? Obviously I need a plunger washer, as the other one was in 5 or 6 pieces. But how do I know if I need to replace the packing unit, washer etc? I'm really trying to spend as little as possible as my wife is an accountant and WILL call me out. For whatever parts I do need what size replacements? 2. The blind cap is stripped. It will screw on to the barrel but it wont catch the rod threads. I was thinking of putting a bit of epoxy then grease the threads so they wont stick. Good idea? Bad idea? Other ideas??? Thanks Jon
  2. Hi! Perhaps a noob question, but I couldn't find anything in the forums that addresses this particular issue. I have a circa 1940 Sheaffer Balance Vacuum-Fil that works great, with one exception. Every time I unscrew the blind cap to pull out the plunger rod, the cap unscrews not just from the body of the pen, but also from the end of the rod. I'm afraid that if this happen repeatedly, the screw will be stripped. What is the best way to safely secure the cap without causing damage or doing something irreversible? I could just super-glue the thing, but that seems like a terrible idea. What is the best practices for this situation?
  3. For some time now it seemed I never found anything at garage sales or antique shops in my area. Yesterday a fellow who had a garage sale said he had a couple of pens and asked if I might be interested. What I found was a Sheaffer Balance and an Esterbrook. The Sheaffer needed some cleaning up and the Esterbrook was missing it's jewels and clip. Everything at the garage sale was a dollar. So I picked them up for $2.00. I cleaned up the Sheaffer and replaced the sac (using the still good sac out of the Esterbrook). I found that I had a1930-31 Sheaffer Balance in Marine Green with a nice F Lifetime nib. It has a little brassing on the clip and a small crack at the cap lip but writes beautifully. Oh, and I have a spare Esterbrook nib. From the twisted condition of the old sac, I wonder if the Balance had ever been used. The old sac is next to the pen below.
  4. I just got my first vintage fountain pen, a short Sheaffer Balance. Because of its size, I would prefer to write with it posted, but it already has two hairline cracks at the open end of the cap. I was thinking of using a small length of heat shrink tubing and putting it over the end--covering the gold band and going to the end of the cap--to help hold everything together. Do you think this will provide enough reinforcement to allow me to post the cap and keep the cracks from growing? If others have done this, are there special considerations or hints you'd be willing to share? (I have seen the forum posts recommending MEK for crack repair, but in my understanding, even if I repair the cracks with MEK, new cracks are likely to form if I keep posting the cap because of the thinness of the lip.) Thanks all!

How Is It Supposed To Fill?

I recently bought a Sheaffer Balance with a vacuum fill mechanism. When I went to clean it, I realized that there was ink caked on the feed and set about cleaning it. During that process, I noticed that the only way the pen would fill was in the up-stroke. This is my first vac fill fountain pen, so I am not well acquainted with how they're supposed to work. But, from what I know of modern vac fillers, they fill by the release of the vacuum made while pushing the plunger down. Is this a common problem with these pens? If so, is there a simple fix?
  6. In the late 1920s, Sheaffer produced a flat top fountain pen model with a black screw-in quill at the bottom end of the barrel and a ringtop cap. This model was a direct forerunner of the Balance model which followed shortly thereafter, as my article Origin of the Sheaffer Balance discusses. Though the flat top quilled pen is scarce, there is a truly rare model in the same family. This model, which does not appear in any known catalogs or other Sheaffer materials that have come to light to date, also represents an important piece of evidence in the early evolution of the Balance. I've recently acquired a new-old-stock example of this pen: http://home.comcast.net/~kirchh/Misc/K74TC%5BFTQ%5D_1.jpg This model likely came just after the ringtop quilled flat top model (which was only listed in Jade in its one appearance in the 1928 catalog), but prior to the addition of the symmetrically-tapered Balance items, which first were offered at the end of 1928. At the time, most Sheaffer models did not have names; this pen's model symbol was K74TC, a designation used for the true Balance of the same girth which likely followed almost immediately. --Daniel

    Possible Sheaffer Balance 500

So I just picked up a new pen today. From what I can tell it's a Sheaffer Balance 500 Golden Brown Striated with a radius clip and a Feather Touch 5 nib. If I'm wrong on any point please point them out. I plan on sending it out in the near future for some TLC restoration along with one or two more. I picked it up for $15, I don't think that's too bad...is it? http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag116/SyntheticEvil13/Mobile%20Uploads/20140613_152630_zpsr2ueot2p.jpg http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag116/SyntheticEvil13/Mobile%20Uploads/20140613_152658_zpsukcte6jy.jpg http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag116/SyntheticEvil13/Mobile%20Uploads/20140613_152723_zpsd0jpxtpn.jpg http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag116/SyntheticEvil13/Mobile%20Uploads/CM140613-15280801_zpsndhyyvjo.jpg
  8. A beautiful 1930's plunger vacuum-fill Sheaffer Balance has just come into my possession. Woo! It is my first vintage pen, and I want to take proper care of it. I'm trying to decide what ink to put in it. I have: De Atramentis Aubergine Diamine Oxblood Noodler's Black Swan In Australian Roses Noodler's Green Marine Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku What do you think of the safety of these inks in this pen? Should I avoid the Noodler's? Do I need to get different ink altogether?
  9. I went to the flea mkt. this weekend and pick up an amazing Sheaffer Balance (lever fill). Gray greens with red vein. Not sure what the proper name of this is. I haven't seen this color before but I love it! Any idea what the proper name is and approximate date? I am guessing 1930s? Is this color common? The photo in the link doesn't do justice to the brilliant colors. It looks great with a very small bit of brassing in one spot on the cap ring. The nib looks great as well. It needs cleaning and a new sac. The cap does not screw down nice and tight as it should. At this time I am a bit confused why since I have checked with my loop and see no cracks at all in the cap. Any ideas what could cause this and a can it be fixed? Due to the cap issue ...the vendor at the flea market sold it to me for $10.00 USD. He said if it fit properly he would have to have had $20.00. Needless to say, I drew my wallet like a wild west gun slinger. He has a few more pens he will bring next month when comes back to town. His son was collecting and he had picked up a few at estate and yard sales for him but his son has decided to do other things now so he said he would bring them for me to see. http://www.fountainp...9904287__sb.jpg Overall, a great weekend. I look forward to learn more about this pen. Thank you.
