    About Kyo-Iro Inks

About the Kyo-iro inks. They are made by the Dye technic organization which has a 300 year experience making vegetable based inks called "Kusakisome" for textiles like kimono's. The Kyo Iro inks are not vegetable based inks. But they tried to reproduce the look and feel of the Kusakisome. So the experience of ink making is definately there ! One of the "Masters" helped to develop the Kyo-Iro inks. As everything in Japan all products are of a high quality ! So these inks are not known yet but I'm sure you'll find them very particular.

  15. For all collectors who love Maki-e pens, the SFPG offers the AP limited edition "The Prayer Wheel". The Prayer Wheel fountain pen was fashioned with consummate artistry and accuracy by the master Maki-e shi artist Kosetsu. The simple yet stunning design features a combination of colours: mainly black with red, white and blue accents. However, in spite of its deceptively simple design there is nothing rudimentary about this exquisite yet practical work of art. New Boutique In Diest.

Welcome to our new boutique in Diest ! The SFPG is proud to announce that it will henceforth be housed in a listed property in Diest, with fine parquet floors, timber panelling and a listed stove that all help to give the Gallery an olde-worlde yet tastefully inviting and appealing look and feel. Our boutique has many new features: two writing desks where you can test our pens, a "Wall of ink" with various types of ink that are available in the boutique, a private area where you can discuss a specific assignment and a children's corner where kids can read and have fun. Last but not least, we are at your service and attentive to all your needs, ideas and suggestions. Located between the well-known Belgian cities of Leuven and Hasselt, Diest is a small dynamic town that has many assets. One practical advantage is the fact that there are very few traffic jams and that it is not difficult to find a parking space! Diest has a very rich history, and many tourists are surprised when they discover the wealth of historical and cultural gems that can be found here. Koning Albertstraat, with its plethora of specialty shops, is the main street that leads from the centre of Diest to the splendid Beguinage Convent. The picturesque market offers a seemingly endless variety of food and drink. After you've visited the gallery, why not take a stroll in the pedestrian shopping street in the centre of the town? And the Warandepark is truly a haven of peace. You can even walk on the water... but that’s something you can discover yourself! We wish you a warm welcome, Catherine Koning Albertstraat 72b, 3290 Diest, Belgium. http://www.sakurafountainpengallery.com/en

    Manu Propria Sakuragawa

The Manu propria Bô Sakuragawa in a medium size arrived ! It is a stunning fountain pen. It looks like a branch and although it is pretty long it feels very comfortable in the hand. Like all urushi pens it has a warm touch and feel. Sakuragawa nuri is an urushi technique called ‘cherry bark lacquer’. This technique imitates the color and surface of a cherry tree bark. In Japan the bark of the cherry tree has been used to decorate objects called "kabazaiku". Utensils like tea caddies, trays but also small furnitures, sword sheets, calligraphy brushes, smoking accessories and more. The tradition is said to be over 200 years old. It is passed on today through artisan workshops in the region. http://www.sakurafountainpengallery.com/nl/boutique/detail/bô-medium-sakuragawa Sincerely, Catherine

Introduction Russian Lacquer Art - 2

Russian Miniature Lacquer Art is, together with the Japanese Maki-e, one of the most beautiful artistic realisations ever made on fountain pens. They are stunning, magnificent, breathtaking … The Russian Miniature lacquer art is worldwide regarded as one of Russia’s most distinctive artistic achievements. I would like to show you the first pen I laid my eyes on and I can tell you I was completely dazzled. This pen is the reason I started to study the Russian Lacquer Art. It was the Kynsey pen in Fedoskino style “The Knight with hand on this Chest” a detail from the picture made by the Greek painter “El Greco”. It was so stunning that I was completely overwhelmed by its beauty and its refined, detailed and accurate painting. For your records there are none of these pens available anymore. Picture by Kynsey. In Europe we tend to like a sober style. No overdoing, not to many colours or details. This pen was definitely one that captured all these qualities. When I mentioned it to a Russian lacquer art specialist she said “ The man in his coffin ? There was nothing on the pen!” and I knew exactly what she meant. Russian miniature lacquer artist are trained and skilled to paint an excessive part of small details in complicated compositions. It is a part of their art. Especially Mstera and Palech style. Today we see a lot more of these kind of pens with solitary portrets. Nevertheless “The knight with hand on his Chest” is an incredible beauty ! What makes this pen so special : the details of the face, eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, the hairs and beard, the fine shaping of the hands, the detailed lace. The artist who realized this pen is very skilled in the 17th-18th century way of painting. For those of you who think it is to good to be true I magnified the picture. Only the best artists can achieve this work of art ! It is only by learning about the artist, his or her work and their ability to maintain the quality that makes you aware of their craftsmanship. And you should when you consider to invest in these items. Is this a work of art ? I'm convinced this pen will last to the end of time. What do you think ? Yours truly, Catherine
  25. Since 2011 I have been studying the Russian Lacquer Art fountain pens. I travelled to meet the CEO of Phoenix Lacquer Art and Kynsey, I’ve been reading about Iconography, Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstera and Kohlui schools. I searched for all available information. I can say I found the tip of the iceberg but there is a lot more to discover. I could talk weeks about this, but one thing about Russian Lacquer Art is very clear to me : there are only a few very high talented artists who create the top of Russian Lacquer Art on fountain pens. Material: resin Finish (general): oil paint or tempera, gold leaf, silver and/or gold filigree, lacquer Nib : 18 kt duotone gold Filling : power filler Length : 180 mm capped Diameter : 20 mm. Weight : 56gr The Phoenix Lacquer Art (PLA) company has gathered most of the top artists, about 30 people. The CEO of PLA knows every artist in person. Artists from different schools like Fedoskino, Palekh and Mystera. PLA is able to maintain this top quality of artistic fountain pens. If you just have to look at the collections you will be convinced. I made a selection which you can consult in the Sakura Fountain Pen Gallery. http://www.sakurafountainpengallery.com/en/fpngallery/phoenix-lacquer-art-russian-lacquer-art If you would like to know more about Russian Lacquer Art you are welcome to read the whole story …. http://www.sakurafountainpengallery.com/en/lacquer-art I know I have a private store and a webstore but this is more then about pens. This is about passion and the love for the art and an admiration for talented unknown artists. Share your thoughts …. If it is ok for you I would like to show you from time to time a marvellous pen. It will never be a complete review because the pens stay mint. Although I do not find the appropriate forum to post. Because the technique from the Russian Lacquer Art originates from China and Japan I placed the post here. Yours, Catherine
