  1. Vicarious geographic exploration is one of the underestimated joys of fountain pens. Fill a pen with Diamine Sunshine Yellow and you're not that far away from Liverpool, where the Beatles got started and Diamine still makes ink. Intrigued by the economic development of Germany after reunification? Use a pen by Cleo Skribent, made in Bad Wilsnack, a village northwest of Berlin, in the former DDR. A new ink brand, Robert Oster Signature, transports us to Naracoorte, just north of the Great Australian Bight, or open bay, midway between Melbourne and Adelaide. The name Naracoorte is apparently derived from Aboriginal words for place of running water, or waterhole, which is appropriate. Of the more than 40 inks offered by Oster, half are blues and greens. At least 20 shades of blue-green would be needed just to document the bay. Photograph of Great Australian Bight at Nullarbor Plain, by Flickr contributor Michael Middleton, used under Creative Commons license A sample of Oster aqua was given to me by Amberlea Davis, a prolific ink reviewer and moderator on the Fountain Pen Network. This appears to be the first review of aqua on FPN, though fellow FPN ink reviewer Cyber6 has reviewed two dozen Oster inks, and Visvamitra has reviewed more than a dozen. Color and Shading Aqua is what I would call a green-heavy version of teal, a color that I truly enjoy. It shades beautifully, and creates dark halos around a slightly lighter inner core. It's dark enough for many professional environments. Range In addition to blue and green, Oster offers other colors derived from Australian iconography, including Bondi Blue and Barossa Grape. The Coonawarra wine-growing region is nearby, home to Penfolds, Yalumba, and Wynns wineries. Performance The ink performs well with a Nemosine Singularity 1.1 mm italic. It flows adequately, is fairly well lubricated, and exhibits no signs of feather or show-through on Strathmore 24-pound, 25 percent cotton ivory paper. It dries in less than 10 seconds, which is probably influenced by the paper absorbency. I'm not detecting sheen, but the halo effect is gorgeous, and sheen may be obtainable on less absorbent papers. Presentation Oster inks are available in a 50 ml PET bottle. A plastic resin, PET is recyclable and commonly used in food and drink bottles and jars. The bottle is somewhat tall and narrow, and though the opening is wide enough for nibs, the bottle is a little tall for its diameter, which makes it fairly easy to tip over. Unlike glass, however, PET is lightweight, which is relevant to shipping costs from Australia. Price and Availability Oster ink sells for about US $7.50 for a 50-milliliter bottle, which is more than reasonable. Unfortunately, shipping from Australia to the USA is double that. Several bottles could probably be combined for a single shipping charge, however. The inks are currently sold on eBay, though the Sakura Fountain Pen Gallery in Belgium carries them, and I suspect that Oster is exploring other distribution options. In the United States, two other Australian inks Blackstone and Toucan are offered by Anderson Pens and Vanness Pens. Conclusions Robert Oster aqua is a lovely teal color, lighter than the English Diamine teal and the Dutch Akkerman No. 24 Zuiderpark blauw-groen, and greener than the American Noodlers Navajo turquoise. It is ever-so-slightly bluer than Black Swan in Icelandic minty bathwater, a mix of Noodlers inks created by FPN contributor Masque. But certainly close enough for highway work. Since this ink comes all the way from Naracoorte, we'll call it the Riddoch Highway, and we'll dream about a drive through vineyards, farmland, ranches, and timber, on our way to the great, blue-green bay of Australia. https://goo.gl/maps/SY5rGqJmh6q
  2. Robert Oster is new player in fountain pen ink market. He operates through ebay shop. The inks are sold in 50 ml PET bottles with a tightly secure twist cap. I don't know who makes the inks for the shop, but the colors look interesting and fresh. At the moment Robert Oster inks are available in colors Aqua Australian Sky Blue Barossa Grape Black Blue Black Blue Denim Blue Night Blue Sea Bondi Blue Burgundy Chocolate Claret Copper Brown Deep Sea Emerald Green Ever Green Fire Engine Red Forest Green Graphite Green Green Green Lime Green Olive Jade Khakhi Light Green Marine Moss Orange Peach Pinky Red Orange Royal Red Ruby Red School Blue Spearmint Torquay Tranquility Turquoise Yellow Sunset I received sixteen samples (marked in cursive) from well known ink enabler - Cyber6. Thank you Claudia You rock! On Robert Oster's shop website Deep Sea is described as follows: "Deep Sea is just that. A fabulously exact likeness of ocean deep waters. Flows on darkest Blue Green, dries on distinctly deep deep sea Turquose. If there ever was an edgy colour to display on your desk, this is one to be proud to own.". As some of you already know I dislike such hues and Deep Sea is no different - as most of them it causes some unpleasant sensation in my brain. On the other hand the ink is wet and well behaved so if you enjoy "teals" this one may really please you. Flows on two tones of Caramel, dries on two shades of Khakhi." This one is, so far, a favourite of mine. It flows nicely ans is rather wet. As other Robert Oster ink it would be perfect if only there was more lubrication and smoothness to it. Don't misinterpret me - it flows well but in extra-fine nib it simply lacks lubrication. In double broad it's pure poetry. Drops of ink on kitchen towel Software ID Tomoe River, Kaweco Classic Sport - eyedropper, B Leuchtturm 1917, Kaweco Classic Sport - eyedropper, B Oxford Comparison

Thank you Claudia You rock! On Robert Oster's shop website Green Olive is described as follows: "This shade of Jade is unique. Flows on like fresh lemon grass, dries on like antique Jade". There's something to it. definitely. I must say I enjoy the color, especially in double broad nib. It looks fresh and has has decent flow and rather good saturation. It's not water resistant. The lubrication could be better but it's not bad either. Thank you Claudia You rock! I'll review them in following weeks. Let's start with Emerald Green that's described as unique green [...] a beautiful representation of a multifaceted Emerald gem. Flows on glassy, dries on Emerald Green with gentle shading quality on product page. Well I can agree it flows really well. The ink is definitely wet and offers great flow. I haven't observed any misbehaviour (no feathering, no bleedthrough, no clogging or causing hard starts). It's not water resistant. Personally I dislike the color - in general I dislike such greens. If however you enjoy them and you expect ink to flow well and offer some nice shading, Emerald may be interesting choice for you. Robert Oster In Sakura

Robert Oster is a new arrival on the ink scene from the sunny climes of Australia and he produces a large range of ink colours in neat, tall bottles with secure caps and a gold label. There have been a few reviews of his inks and personally, the inks that I have tried have been very good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Until now you had to buy directly from him, choosing seven inks to fit in an international package. Now his inks will be available through Sakura (link below). I just thought that people might like to know as it is quite an extensive range of inks and in my dealings with him he's been such a gentleman and a pleasure to order from and it's exciting to see a new ink range come to market that could potentially do very well. Mr Oster's Amazing Inks

I first noticed Robert Oster's ink on ebay and wasn't too sure about it. Then I saw someone here had taken the plunge before me and the ink seemed good, so I took the plunge and contacted him. Customer service was truly excellent; he always responded very promptly and politely and was very helpful. I got seven inks in one package by ordering directly from him. I can't give a full picture review here as all my photographs are too big, so I have a picture of a comparison sheet below, after my thoughts. Moss Green: Very nice green with a slight grey aspect. Quite dark and a genuine 'moss' colour. No shading. Orange: This one doesn't come out very well in the picture. It is very bright, no shading and is a little bit like a highlighter ink but is deep enough for normal use. It 'pops'. Lime Green: Really lovely citrus green. Nice and bright with slight yellow hints underneath and a small bit of shading. It gives Kobe's lime a run for its money. Royal Red: A standard red, but quite a nice one. No shading. Looks a little flat on Tomoe. Barossa Grape: lovely murky purple. Very dark; perhaps a little like Ink of the Witch? I have nothing quite like it. Deep Sea: really awesome. Like a slightly more saturated Emerald of Chivor. Nice shading and sheen. It has a tendency to bleed a tiny bit on Tomoe, but I had no problems on Clairefontaine or Rhodia. Jade Green: Very nice murkey green, a touch lighter than Tanna Japonensis if you know that ink. Has shading and a slight brownish/yellow undertone. I simply wanted to add that these inks are really great. They all have quite strong saturation and a wetness on the nib, good flow, decent lubrication, no staining issues (some of them wash out really easily) and reasonably fast dry times. Except for the Deep Sea on Tomoe I had no issues with show through, bleed or feathering. It's the deep saturation for me that makes them really attractive. I liked these inks so much that I'm already narrowing down my list for the next seven in a pack. Highly recommended. flic.kr/p/HHFYdq
  11. Just got an email from Robert Oster Signature Inks... A special for FPN members and Facebook.. (He is now on Facebook)... B) "For the current colour selection (minus Graphite and Black) at AU$7.64 per 50ml bottle plus shipping" Don't know if there is a time limit on this.. but this is better than the Paid for 6 bottles and get 7 deal at AU$9.99/bottle. :D C.
  12. I stumbled across Robert Oster and his signature inks on eBay recently, see here. This is the front of a rather ordinary copy paper - Australian Reflex from some years ago. It is somewhat absorbent, so the dry times are really fast. However, even on this paper, there is no feathering or spreading. I am showing the back of this scan to show that there is some spotting of bleed through that is visible, but they are otherwise a very well behaved inks. This is the front of a better quality paper, Fuji Xerox Sustainable Earth copy paper. It is no longer available, but it is comparable to Double A, Kokuyo Campus or Nakabayashi papers. You can see that shading is more prominent on this paper. I haven't shown a view of the back because there was nothing to see. No show-through, no bleeding, just white paper. This is Tomoe River paper, but given that the ink behaved so well on the FX paper, there is not much improvement here, however the dry times are substantially longer. This is the back of the TR paper, demonstrating the show-through that is synonymous with this paper. What looks like bleeding just above seems to be an artefact, as it is not visible on the paper. Other notes -- The ink is reasonably saturated, but seems to have little surfactant. The Bondi Blue in particular has a hard time wetting a freshly cleaned nib. The first scan, on the lined paper, was done with the two Jinhao 599 pens that came with the inks. The other scans were made with a #6 Chinese nib fitted into a dip pen holder. Currently the vendor only has international shipping options on one ink, the Yellow Sunset. I don't know if he is willing to add that to the other inks, but if you aren't in Australia, and you are interested in the inks, just ask him. The two inks I have tried here are worthy competitors to the Blackstone Colours of Australia inks from Justwrite in Brisbane - Sydney Harbour Blue and Barrier Reef Blue. I don't think it is a matter of either/or, but both.
