  1. Hello FPNers - I have a Sailor Pro Gear that originally came with a music nib. This nib wrote beautifully, but I don’t write music scores, so I wanted to convert it from a once-in-a-while writer to a daily writer. I hired a nibmeister to convert it to a medium nib, which turned out to be impossible because the ball tipping material wasn’t there. He reduced its size and made it smoother, but it’s not working for me at all. I’m open to suggestions, including nib replacement (is this possible on a Pro Gear?), alternate nibmeisters, etc. I don’t want to end up with a stub or anything unusual. I prefer standard medium or fine nibs, or perhaps a smooth cursive nib like Lamy offers. The Pro Gear is perfect for me ergonomically; I just need to get the nib right. Thanks, GNL

  3. I was looking at getting another Japanese fountain pen. I found the Sailor Pro Gear Slim Mini which looks like something my brother would enjoy, he loves small pens with very fine nibs, so I thought I'd get one for him as a present. He is studying Japanese and currently uses a Pilot Elite 95S EF that I gave him when he was accepted to university. However, I was disappointed to see that the Slim Mini is only available with a MF nib. So I wonder, is it possible to find it anywhere with an EF nib? Or if not, is it compatible with any other Sailor pen, so that I could just swap the nibs? Also, how does the MF compare to a normal japanese EF?
  4. Hi All FP aficionados (or enablers), I am considering buying a Sailor Pro-Gear Tequila Sunrise (large) and wanted to have some feedback on the Sailor Pro-Gear and its relative value current value & longer term value (is it worth it? )...(2nd part i know is a loaded question). At $ 300. tilting toward buying it. Normally I would do a bunch of research reading/watching reviews etc. before making a FP purchase, so this is a time sensitive question and will wait 'till tomorrow to decide... Factors: It is new in box, choice of M or MF 21k nib I: collect these things, but I think I would use it in rotationdon't drink alcohol so itsa weird name for me to buy "tequila"have Pelikans, Sheaffer Balance II's, Conway Stewart Churchill Combo which I love to use, and a variety of others that I hardly usedon't have any experience w/ Sailor FP'slike its color variationspending the # won't affect my lifestyleuse fine & broad nibs mostlyhave a few Japanese Pilot & Platinum pocket pens which I likeWhaddya Think: Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Good value? STFU? Thanks for any thoughts that you conjure up.... George ArrivistePen

    Music From The Ocean

    Music from the Ocean It was a little fight for the Slim or the Standard one. Would the Slim be too small? Would the 14k nib performs bad? As I had the Standard already, also the price is just half of the Standard, I give the Slim a shot. A slim review: Outlook: Normal package with converter, normal excellent quality, zero complaint. Oh I love the THICK center band (KOP induced?) and is in shinny chrome details, I always prefer chrome than gold. (The center band of the regular Slim has two ring lines). And the color is a special, a voyage green blended with little blue I think, and the whole body is nearly opaque. (Yet it’s not difficult to persuade yourself that you could “see through” the material…) The pen is quite light, and yes, it is quite smaller than the standard. The pen seems to be a bit short when uncapped, (I could use the Standard uncapped happily), but I could adapt it easily as I like light pens too. 14k Music Nib: I flush the pen with mild soap water before having it inked, and I picked the Diamine’s Golden Honey this time. The nib is very smooth with good feedback. It is a wet nib but not as wet as the pilot or platinum music nib that has 3 tines (I don’t have any music nib, just have a try on a pen shop before). This music nib has only one slit and two tines, and that’s the reason for me to choose it. Writing with a not very wet music nib is fun, like writing a 1.1 stub or italic, but wetter, and smoother. As said in many threads, writing with music nib or stub, a little adjustment on writing angle is needed, yes, it is, but not difficult, the sweet spot is quite large for this pen actually. Conclusion: Pro Gear: Standard or Slim? I choose Standard, always. But if you had the standard already like me, surely it is not a bad idea to get the slim, the smaller size fits many shirt pockets (also the slim price this time is just half of the standard). Performance wise, no worry, Sailor has good nibs, 21k is wonderful, but 14k is very good already. I am very, very happy to have this, no regret at all. Again, I love the thick center band, it makes the pen looks thicker…lol.

    List Of Sailor Pro Gear Colors

    While the 1911 is my go-to writer, the distinct shape of the Pro Gear has a special place in my heart. The goal of this thread is to encompass Pro Gears of every color ever released. This makes categorizing a little bit easier for us Sailor fans. The following models are included: Pro Gear King of Pen, Pro Gear, Pro Gear Realo, Pro Gear Slim, Pro Gear II, Pro Gear II Realo, Pro Gear II Slim, Pro Gear Mini, Pro Gear Slim Mini. I need your help! If you have colors to add or find errors (i.e. duplicates) in the list, please leave a post below.   7. Very recently I have developed a keen interest in the "ink" side of the fountain pen hobby versus the pen side. The Japan store exclusive inks in particular such as the wonderful Kobe Nagasawa ink line. Up until now my ink choices have tended toward the safe European brands such as Montblanc, which sadly don't offer much in the way of sheen, though do often produce nice shading. My new interest in Sailor inks has seen me build up a small collection of Sailor Pro Gear fountain pens. The Sailor Pro Gear Slim in particular. When you have a million new inks to try, the cartridge converter filling system of the Pro Gear is very welcome. Although I have had a Sailor King of Pen Demo for a few years now I have never considered the other models such as the Pro Gear Standard, Slim, Mini, or even other Sailor lines such as the Realo, 1911 or Profit. The flat ends of the Pro Gear with its anchor finial is much more preferable to me than the torpedo 1911 or Profit models. Sailor Pro Gear's fall into 3 distinct categories, with pricing given accordingly. The pricing usually holds irrespective of whether it is a shop-exclusive or part of their standard production line. The Pro Gear King of Pen is normally around $800-$900, the Pro Gear Standard around $300 and the Pro Gear Slims around $150-$250. Thankfully (for my wallet) the size of the Pro Gear slim isn't too small...so I can potentially collect them all (uh oh!). The Nagasawa Kobe line of inks utilise the flat mason jar, which thankfully isn't a problem if your filling them using Sailor Fountain Pens as they fill from the breather hole (unlike Western fountain pens where you have to dunk the whole nib and part of the section in!). I'll be honest, these flat jars are a pain when using my Omas, Danitrio even Pilot 823....but to be fair they are designed to be used with Sailor fountain pens. So I decided to go all in with their proprietary system and buy some Sailor fountain pens. I'm starting to build quite a collection. Luckily their nibs are awesome, with just a hint of feedback which is EXACTLY how I like my nibs. I HATE overly smooth nibs, they make my handwriting look out of control. I originally bought the Sailor Pro Gear Slim (properly called the Nagasawa "beside") Tarumi Apricot with H-F (Hard-Fine) nib. I had been eyeing this one for quite some time. You can see the Kobe Tarumi Apricot ink in the crappy picture of the ink pot and pen under the nib. As you can probably tell the inspiration for the Nagasawa Kobe Pro Gear slim is taken from their ink line. I believe they also do this with their Pro Colour 500 line, some featuring the latest 60+ colours. I then caved and bought the Gokuen Toshi Fresh Green also with H-F nib, pictured here with a writing sample using ink of the same name; ...and then I couldn't resist getting the other two Suma Rikkyu-Rose H-M nib and Rokko Island Sky H-EF nib. I think I might like Suma Rikyu-Rose and Rokko Island Sky the best, for the nibs as much as the colours. The EF nib is wickedly smooth with a generous flow- much nicer than the H-F and H-MF. The H-M nib is just glorious, gliding smoothly across my Hobonichi planner. I have it inked up with a sample of the Suma Rikyu Rose which has some lovely shading and complexity to it. On Hobonichi TR paper it glides across juicily with just a touch of Sailor feedback to keep your writing under control. I don't normally like pink inks or pink things but both ink and pen are winners. Here they are; I should also mention all the Kobe Nagasawa Pro Gear Slim fountain pens have a shimmer to them. Which make them even more special. I believe Kobe Nagasawa do this with a number of their store- exclusive pens, including the aforementioned ProColour 500. I guess I'll have to check those out too. Here are the writing samples on Rhodia grid pad; All in all very neat little pens at a neat little price- especially given your getting a 14ct gold nib tuned to perfection with a generous flow. Although I can use the pen un-posted I find its much more comfortable posted, and probably a must for most. The only other slight negative is the minuscule ink capacity in the converter. Luckily I bought about 50 Kobe ink samples so I'm glad of the opportunity to switch out the inks regularly. I really like the colours of these Nagasawa "beside" fountain pens, though I know they will be too bright bordering on the intolerable for some. I much prefer them to the demonstrator PG Slim's that can be found in the standard Sailor line. They really are bright happy addition to my otherwise quite serious fountain pen collection. Here are some bonus shots- Enjoy! And... Just one more... I didn't think it worth doing a separate review for essentially the same pen. So here is the Kingdom Note store exclusive Kintoki Carrot which can you believe it has a carrot etched onto the 14ct gold nib! Unfortunately there is no matching carrot finial. Or any shimmer. However it does sport an elegantly mis-matched cap and barrel, and the Sailor anchor looks very distinguished as always. It sports a H-MF nib. Here it is; Check out that nib! One last group shot;
  8. PRELUDE What would be the one Sailor pen within my budget, which I could keep even if I would let go of all the other Sailors? Having not quite a smooth experience with a few Sailor nibs, I decided upon the exciting & costlier option of a Nagahara tuned speciality nib, instead of taking another pen with the stock 14k or 21k nib. Below is a link to the review on my blog: Sailor Pro Gear with Naginata Togi Nib Review My last Sailor was a Pro Gear Sigma Slim which is reviewed here. However, for these speciality nibs, you can have a long waiting period of not less than 5-6 months. I asked my Japanese dealer Raul (Engeika) to arrange for one as quickly as possible. Two things came out of it: he gave me a superb deal on the pen itself (not supposed to discuss the price) and told me to wait while he can add another to their current speciality shipment order to Sailor company. Within a month and a half, my pen was sent from Japan, customs paid off and it finally arrived at my address. Immediately I opened the package with immense excitement and flushed the pen/converter with plain water before plugging in one of the complementary black cartridges. The pen of course wrote like a dream ! PRESENTATION The pen comes in a blue gift box, packed with two black cartridges, a converter and papers. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IJLbc6UJJkw/VjC6ICRRjuI/AAAAAAAAFkk/-tTf1NCytuE/s1600/DSC_6467.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KhlUq_EsaK0/VjC6IxCrruI/AAAAAAAAFko/HpXbyAFs0iU/s1600/DSC_6475.jpg DESIGN - THE TAPERED CIGAR (5/6) The Pro Gears with Speciality Nibs come in two standard designs - Gold and Silver Accents. I opted for the Gold Accented Pro Gear with the Naginata Togi nib, one out of the 19 or 20 Sailor speciality nib variants. The name Naginata is an anecdotal allusion the shape of the nib which resembles a Naginata Long Sword originally used by the Samurai Class in Feudal Japan. The body is light and sturdy. It is made up of PMMA resin or Polymethyl Methacrylate which was developed by a group of scientists way back in 1928, which is easier to mould with heat. However PMMA is initially transparent when synthesised from petroleum, later dyes are added to impart various colours. Besides, it’s resistant to normal scratches with a hardness of around 4 in Mohs scale. So, technically you would probably need some iron or steel to make a good scratch on it. A keychain might work just fine in case you plan to test! The lustre of the pen is chiefly manifested by the gold plated accents, though the resin does have an alluring gleam itself. The rings at either ends along with the clip and concentric cap bands deliver the golden convergence to the black beauty. I do feel that the pen has an understated look. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zc7Yy1mBlXY/VjC6J1qAShI/AAAAAAAAFkw/vkRa9JOJQc8/s1600/DSC_6479.jpg The cap is light and unscrews with two complete turns, revealing the dazzling nib gleaming in gold. A loop of glitter does mark the start of its grip section. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2mk93yt3Bz0/VjC6Vu3ToeI/AAAAAAAAFlg/kB8dLjDUQlk/s1600/DSC_6481.jpg The cap band carries an imprint of SAILOR JAPAN FOUNDED 1911 and has a thin loop just above it for the pure aesthetics part. The finial carries a distinct raised anchor logo, painted in gold. The tension-fit clip elegantly rests on the cap, carrying their classical design. I like the classical clip compared to the newer Pro Gear 2 clips. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kFm2ZgEegHU/VjC6hrhKBrI/AAAAAAAAFmI/S01J9Zcxwok/s1600/collage.jpg FILLING SYSTEM (4/6) As a CC filler, the supplied convertor is limited by a volume of 0.6 mL. As of now, I am using ink cartridges which have around 1 mL of capacity. It does give an advantage to frequent ink-swappers or cartridge users. But the nib sprays ink like a water jet and it does not last long. The barrel unscrews from the grip section with four turns and reveals an usual metallic thread section on the grip and a threaded resin barrel. The nib and the front part of the grip have to be completely immersed inside ink to have proper converter suction. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2QrrNv7IRM/VjC6VHg8TuI/AAAAAAAAFlc/acQXZAwsjQ4/s1600/DSC_6513.jpg NIB - ALL THAT MATTERS (6/6) The Naginata Togi nib section is also friction-fit like others and it comes in a 21k monotone - silver & gold (and stunning!) finish across three speciality widths - NMF, NM & NB. Sailor does make absolute stunners here. The silver accented one sports a rhodium coated nib. The tail end specifies carries the brand imprint of Sailor with the traditional elongated S and and the nib-composition (21 K, 87.5% Au) rests above it. 1911 and the Anchor logo are embossed near the circular breather hole. The scrollwork runs in between the body and the shoulders which well enhances the decor. And the tines elongate themselves to form the famous Naginata sword. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vRMg-Re7rkc/VjC6QfEd6nI/AAAAAAAAFlA/yogJgtMPTb8/s1600/DSC_6524.jpg These nibs are tuned by Yukio Nagahara personally and you can also observe that some gold plating has come of the tip. All I can say is the pen is phenomenally well tuned with a wet flow. The tip has been designed with a semicircular cross section, to write two relatively varying withs - thinner verticals & thicker horizontals. And the overall thickness can vary with the holding angles from 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm. You can see the nib size NMF (Naginata Medium Fine) imprinted on one of the faceted shoulders. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iXjWknVDYjE/VjC6Sw17geI/AAAAAAAAFlI/0Y4dlr8VUfw/s1600/DSC_6527.jpg A tight black plastic feed with closely spaced fins allows to maintain balance against air-pressure with a good buffer capacity of ink and even with the cap open for quite a while, it does not take any effort to lay a nice wet line. The feeder hole provides the ink suction for the converter. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_tBoUyHXuMM/VjC6U2HQLsI/AAAAAAAAFlU/FYjjYiVDCf8/s1600/DSC_6531.jpg The nib lays a smooth and wet line writing super smooth across multiple angles and widths, once it touches the paper. PHYSICS OF IT (6/6) – RELATIVELY SPEAKING The cap needs to be posted else it seems to lack both length and weight. The grip section is about 1.2 cm thick and is quite comfortable for extended writing. I like posting the Pro Gear like some of my pelikans. The pen feels very comfortable and posts securely. Capped Length ~ 12.9 cmUncapped Length ~ 11.6 cmPosted Length ~ 15.1 cmNib Leverage ~ 2.3 cmOverall Weight ~ 22 gCapped, uncapped and posted comparisons with a MB146 run below for your reference. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8hhK6aaq6Y/VjC6YoHNugI/AAAAAAAAFlo/1htoKllrehs/s1600/DSC_6533.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s37TZai7qrk/VjC6Z-RnGgI/AAAAAAAAFlw/4Ob2e3BtP8U/s1600/DSC_6537.jpghttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5h77PSDOfH8/VjC6a6z2ACI/AAAAAAAAFl4/wOv8ip7ORlw/s1600/DSC_6541.jpg ECONOMIC VALUE (6/6) The Pro Gear with Naginata Togi speciality nib retails round US$ 298 and it is available at much lower prices if you source it directly from Japan. The only problem with these speciality nibs is the lead time of six months or so. I was lucky to have this pen in 45 days. I feel that it’s a value for money pen with an added advantage of having a nib tuned by the Nagahara lineage. OVERALL (5.4/6) This stunning 21k nib is quite smooth at a normal 45 degree angle with a really wet flow. The horizontals run border than the vertical lines. The nib lays lines with widths in the range of 0.4 - 0.6 mm according to Sailor. At high angles the nib is smooth lays thinner lines and quite smoothly so. At really low angles the ink flows like water from a fire hose with the smoothest of experiences. On cheaper papers, I found some feedback at higher angles, which is quite acceptable and common across my other smooth nibs. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ps8J8ytNMZo/VjC6ekFLt_I/AAAAAAAAFmA/EvEV7p4HV5U/s1600/DSC_6547.jpg The NMF nib and is not as rigid as the H-M nibs. It has a bit of spring and a relatively softer touch. Being a wet writer out of the box, the Sailor NMF nib puts a line which takes around 35 seconds to dry Sailor Black ink on Tomoe River Paper. What I really like about the nib is the balance it is capable of drawing between wetness and smoothness. May be I will take up some class on Kanji sometime later to use the pen well upto its potential. Obviously it’s a fun nib to use and I have no qualms using it as my daily writer these days. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nXd9FfvzP2E/VjC6jW3aj7I/AAAAAAAAFmQ/tXbJXOS2YM0/s1600/DSC_6543.jpg REFERENCES Sailor Pro Gear Sigma Slim Review Sailor History PMMA Resin Thank you for going through the review. Just for fun... Can't see all that ink in the nib with the naked eye, looks kinda neat!
  10. Hello, I placed an order for what would have been my grail pen (OMAS Brown Arco Milord with a broad nib); however, it is looking like the retailer is going to be unable to fulfill it (RIP OMAS). As they were unable to fill it, they have offered to refund the purchase price, or replace the pen in the order. I find myself drawn to the Sailor King of Pen Pro Gear Sky Blue; however, there does not seem to be a lot of information about the KOP Pro Gear on FPN. I am a bit hesitant to order though, mostly due to the size of the pen. I am worried that it will not be long enough to use unposted (as I do not generally post my pens). So far, the ideal pen for me has been the Pelikan M800/M805. It has a nice heft to it, and is long enough for me to use it unposted. I'm curious as to how the length of the KOP Pro Gear compares to the M800. Any pictures comparing the KOP Pro Gear to an M800would be extremely helpful. All the best, ncc82602
  11. The Morita Store in Osaka has a special color Sailor Pro Gear (and other models) in a gorgeous robin egg blue. They do not ship outside of Japan. An FPNer just posted on Facebook how she ordered two of these pens on the Japanese site, had them sent to a shipping site in Japan that sent them to the US. That sounds really difficult to me. Does anyone know an easier way to source one of these gorgeous pens? Thanks, Susan
  12. Hello FPNers, Could not wait to share my happiness on the newly acquired Pro Gear with the NMF nib. Grabbed a pad and wrote a few lines with it Full review to follow soon.. Sailor Realo Disassembly & Maintenance

    Good morning, I am considering purshasing a Sailor Pro Gear REALO piston filler. I haven't found anywhere instructions for the disassembly of the piston mechanism, nor how easy it is to clean the reservoir. Any help, video, link or testimony would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
  14. Hi, When posting the Sailor Pro Gear Std and/or Pro Gear Slim/Sapporo, what enters in contact with the barrel of the pen? Does the cap has an o'ring inside? I am wondering if the body of the pen gets scratch marks when used often.
  15. Hello, I bought a brand new Sailor Pro Gear Imperial Black FP with medium nib. But I have a problem with it. The Ink flow is very poor.When I write with very very lower angle and press hard, it is ok. Using Normal angle, higher angle and light pressure caused problem. I checked the nib tines, I didn't see a misalignment. It writes scratchy and dry. What do you offer about this problem? I ask your help, please. Best regards. Cengiz PS. I attached a writing sample.
  16. On a recent trip to Osaka, Japan I decided to stop by Mr. Morita's fountain pen shop. I picked up a Sailor Professional Gear in a wonderful "robin's egg blue" color that was specially made by Sailor for the Morita Pen Shop. From the photos online, I didn't think the color looked like a "must-have" but when I saw it in person it grew on me really quickly. I noticed a serious lack of decent photos of this pen online so I thought I'd upload some shots that try and show the lovely color of this exclusive pen. For more info and photos, feel free to check out my blog post here: http://inklode.com/2014/02/28/the-morita-original-pro-gear-slim/ http://inklode.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/SailorProGearSlim_Morita_01.jpg http://inklode.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/SailorProGearSlim_Morita_02.jpg Thanks for looking!
