  1. Hi guys! So I've been looking at this on my mums behalf, and contacted the dealer and can get it for a right steal! I'm just questioning it's authenticity, as for the price he's going to let me pay, it does make me wonder. So if anyone could help spot any signs of this being a fake then please, let me know. I do appreciate it a lot. http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=231167023957&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:IE:1123 Thanks
  2. After starting my addiction hobby with fountain pens I soon realized that there is far more to this than just the pen itself. 1. Pen - Needs to be comfortable to hold and write with, and perform well. It's very personal choice. 2. Nib - Without a good nib, the pen is useless. It should be one that you enjoy not only writing with, but are pleased with what it produces on paper. 3. Ink - I like a smooth ink, moderately saturated, with great shading. Others seem to like something akin to paint, but that's not my preference. Some nibs and inks are meant for each other. Others clearly are not. 4. Paper - You may have the nicest pair of roller skates/blades, but if you're trying them out at the sand dunes, you'll be sorely disappointed. Similarly, the paper should be fountain pen friendly & one that you enjoy writing on. What is your favorite combination of the three? I have a lot of favorite combinations, but my current favorite: 1. Mabie Todd Swan - 1920s BCHR self-filler 2. Super-flex fine 14k nib - very expressive 3. Waterman Blue-Black (1980s) 4. Zander's Gohrsmühle (great German paper with a really cool watermark)
  3. Hey guys! Just wondering what the best looking pen you've ever seen is? Pictures would be great too! Thanks!
  4. Hi there! First post! So apologies if it's in the wrong section. Gotta say, love the site and everyone seems really friendly, which is always good. Anyway, about my post, I'm looking at the following Montblanc Noblesse, but am unsure as to wether the pen is genuine or not, and how much is a reasonable price to pay for one of these, as I'm relatively new to all this. The link has a good few pictures from all different angles. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171257114157?ssPageName=STRK:MEBOFFX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1432.l2649 If you could let me know, as it's something I'd be looking to purchase should everything be well and good. If not, could anyone recommend a place to look for one? Many thanks, Tom
  5. 2nd Post! Again, not sure if its in the right section so apologies, but over time ill learn:) Just wondering, I've been after a Montblanc Noblesse, one of the vintage ones, ( think they are also known as Slimline's or Quickpens, for a while now, but everywhere i seem to look they are costing over £100. Speaking to someone today and they told me they should be relatively cheap to pick up, but I'm yet to find one of sub £100. Anyone have any suggestions on where i can get one? Thanks. Tom
  6. If there is already a section for this, please let me know. I have yet to find one though on Storage and Organization for fine writing tools and materials. It would be nice to have a section for this for people to ask questions in reference to storage and organization, pose ideas, tips, or tricks, post photos of how they organize and store things, and attach instructional files, such as a word document, to their post if they should wish to do so. Just a thought Again, please let me know if a section such as this exists. Thanks! ~gracefulpen
  7. I'm looking for a pen that costs around £40(price of converter included). I would prefer it to be a wet writer, or just not dry. I'm considering the Faber-Castell Ambition, TWSBI 580, Parker Urban and Lamy Studio Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Stories Of Pens

Hi I am researching stories to do with pens in the hope of turning them into a book. All tales that are humorous, poignant or just plain interesting, would be welcome. With the World War in Europe centenary coming up there must be stories from the trenches that European members might have that run in the family and there sure must be some fascinating tales from US members that they have heard that could be used. Contact me - Charles Whitehead at talesofmypen@gmail.com I am a member of the UK based international organisation the Writing Equipment Society (www.wesonline.org.uk) and have sat for two spells on the Governing Council.

    Finish Durability On Lamy Cp1?

Hello! I need some advice/feedback on the CP1... I ultimately have my heart set on getting a stainless steel Lamy 2000, but alas that is a quite expensive pen and a bit out of my grad student stipend budget. I figure I'll save up and buy one when I get my PhD, but for now it's just unreachable (and I'm sick of chasing them on eBay and not exactly knowing what I'm bidding on). However, I still want a nicer pen that I can use daily. I decided that I want a Lamy, since I really love my Safari. I also like the interchangeable nibs, since that way I can change up my writing style without having to invest in a ton of pen bodies. I had an Al-Star, but it just didn't speak to my soul the way I thought it would, so I passed it along to my older brother when he mentioned he wanted a nicer pen to use for grading (he is a grad student as well). Thus I have looked at the Lamy pens around the $40-60 (USD) range and decided upon the black CP1. My question, then, is this: how durable is the black finish? Obviously I know it will get scratched up with rough treatment, but how does it hold up to daily use? Does the matte black take on a sheen from handling pretty quickly? Also, I see on the Goulet Pens website that the CP1 weighs the same as the Safari. Does it feel more solid because it's a thinner pen? Thanks! :-)

What Pen Would My Soldier Use?

Hello, pen historians. I’m writing a fiction story, and I’m hoping you can help me out with a few period details because while I love the modern pens I have, my knowledge of vintage is practically nil. What uniform-rules-compliant pen is the most likely choice for a very poor US soldier to have purchased in 1943? I’ve read up a bit on pens with military clips, but am still rather unclear regarding the prices as they would have stood then. Any recommendations you folks have would be a big help. So, again: inexpensive pen with military clip available for purchase by US servicemen in 1943. What am I? Thank you, ~DorothyNotGale PS: Also, information on where to go to learn about likely inks and the performance of the hypothetical pen for sketching as well as writing purposes would be appreciated.
  12. Hi everybody This Mont Blanc pen was given to me in 1985 and after looking around online I am still not sure of the model, or how much it is worth. I have attached some pictures of the pen and would be grateful if you could take a look and help identify this for me. Thanks!

    Pen Macro Shots

    I've been practicing my macro technique on my LAMY 2000: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2891/11022908906_46759d5b0b_b.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5486/11022907826_9fe57769a3_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7452/11022906106_03e6c5bede_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7450/11022814155_36d03c53ae_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3740/11022816255_e0dd3b7219_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7317/11023032733_cec47bd0e1_b.jpg D5000, 105 micro + TC-17E II
  17. I have a Jinhao X450 (marbled finish) that I got a while ago when I bought a couple of Chinese pens (one is my knock-about Hero 110 that's quite good). I avoid Chinese pens unless I need something that I can use when working in the lab or that can be knocked-about, be lost (or stolen). Given that, I don't usually pay more than $10 for them, and don't care much if they don't work. But I have taken a liking to the very sturdy brass and enamel construction and the excellent M nib that I have gotten used to (though I greatly prefer F and EF nibs and usually avoid M or bigger because it is impractical to write calculations with them, and the fact that I simply really like EF nibs). Unfortunately, after writing two paragraphs, a vacuum forms inside the converter and no ink at all flows into the feed/nib section. I end up having to turn the piston in and out to manually draw air in every ten minutes. I took every single piece of the pen apart and soaked it in household bleach (it was fine, but please don't anyone soak their Montblanc in bleach! I DO NOT recommend trying this on any pen you spend more than $10 on! ). Cleaned every single channel and section with a little nylon brush. Everything was free of any contaminant or manufacturing residue. Put everything back together perfectly. Tested pen. . . And the same thing happened. I can hear a slow bubbling sound as the air tries to get into the reservoir. It is obvious that the feed system is not allowing for any air to enter. The system consists of a partially hollow feed with a little capillary feed that slips inside of it, it is this narrow little capillary feed that plugs into the tiny hole in the section and connects to the converter's reservoir. I don't think the design facilitates for any air to enter to stop a vacuum forming. Does anyone else's X450 do this? Is there any way to fix it? I would really like to find a way to solve the problem, as I have taken a liking to the pen. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  22. Is it alright to use bottled water in order to flush a fountain pen? Or should I just use tap water? I don't have distilled at the moment
  23. Hello, I'm currently new to fountain pens, but I was definitely looking into buying my first pen, which I was hoping wouldn't be disappointing. Because of this, I was just wondering if the community had any suggestions on a decent entry level (I'm hoping to purchase the pen for less than $50) fountain pen. So far I've heard that the lamy safari and waterman phileas are quite popular, but I can't seem to find a waterman phileas for less than $50, and a large portion of the reviews I've read on the lamy safari have suggested that the pen runs into problems quite quickly. If anyone has any suggestions on a pen, or if they have experience with these pens (you own one, or you know where to purchase it) would you mind giving me some advice? Thanks everyone!
  24. I got asked this question by two people, a friend and a student, on the same day. "Are there fountain pens that are made to take the rigors of flying?" Considering we fly in lower atmospheric pressures and are exposed to a range of acceleration and deceleration, is there a fountain pen that will not leak while being used by a pilot? I didn't really have an answer for them, so it got me thinking. Anyone have any information regarding such a pen???
  25. Lately I've been looking for a new EDC pen fitting the criteria below and I thought a lot of other people probably are looking for EDC pens as well so I guess this thread could be suggesting EDC pens to people with a $300 budget? What I'm personally looking for: -20g or heavier -smooth nib -either really fine like a pilot fine or a fine stub (0.8 ideal but I guess 1.1 max) -Budget ≤350 incl shipping to Australia -If vintage must be mint-ish condition -looks nice Any suggestions?
