  1. Dear Fountain Pen Aficionados, Some of you might recall that my precious fountain pen collection, consisting of about 50 pens, was stolen from my office at UC Berkeley in early June. After continually searching, and others who helped, I have now located an eBay seller who is slowly selling off my collection. His eBay handle is Dort1463. He lists on global eBay markets including US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Spain. His international listings all have the peculiar caveat that he only mails to the US. Most of his auctions are private. His eBay store lists his name as "Daniel O." I do not make accusations lightly, but I'm quite sure these items are from my collection. Of the 16 pens this seller sold, all corresponded to items in my collection. Moreover, his sales included unusual items like a Sheaffer Intrigue Whaleshark with stub nib and a Sailor 1911 red with music nib. If any of you purchased items from this seller (at sumgai prices I might add), could you please be kind enough to contact me and perhaps give me the opportunity to buy back a part of my collection? In addition, if you encounter a listing by this seller, please notify me so I can bid or, better yet, catch this guy. Thanks to all for your continued support as I slowly recover from the trauma of losing my collection. Any suggestions for getting it back are greatly appreciated. I have already contacted the police, but have not contacted eBay. I am hesitant to contact eBay since all they will do is close the seller down thereby killing the ability of the authorities to trace him. Sincerely, John Morgan
  2. C'mon. Everybody has an idea for a fountain pen. Share your concepts, ideas and designs here! It may be your dream pen, or just a concept. Yes, I know fantasising is ridiculous, but I wanted to see the community's ideas. Diagrams and sketches are welcome. For example: One of my ideas is inspired by the F-117 Nighthawk stealth bomber. http://www.combataircraft.com/aircraft/ff117_p_02_l.jpg I thought the facets and panels on the plane looked pretty cool and interesting. So, I'm thinking maybe a pen that had similar facets all around and was completely matte black. Just to add to the fantasy: a large titanium/ ruthenium-plated nib, piston filling system, slightly concaved, faceted grip section, large feed, and very heavy. Your turn
  3. I would love for this to be made a pinned topic so all who enter can quickly find tips on photographing their pens.

    Hello From Phoenix Az

I am new to the network and new to fountain pens. I have inherited a large collection of beautiful fountain pens and am interested in selling a number of them. I am not interested in receiving retail for them and am only interested in passing them on to another collector or someone passionate about pens. I am also interested in them and find them very intriguing. Any advice, help, or words of wisdom are graciously accepted. I look forward to being a member and learning more about the pieces I have. Thank you, Winston

Where To Source Vac-Fill Parts In The Uk?

Hi all, After doing some reading I'm looking to replace the seals on an old Sheaffer Junior Vac Balance I've got lying around. Anyone know where's a good place to source the necessary parts, preferably in the U.K.? Thanks, Badger
  6. A couple of months ago I inherited a pen from my late grandmother. Seeing as I didn't, and still don't know much about fountain pens, I was completely unable to ID it. I accepted that for a while, but when I discovered The Fountain Pen Network I rediscovered my hopes for finding out what this pen is. Unfortunately I don't have too much information on it. The only things I can think of that might help you are: The stamp on the nib that says "Iridium Point Germany", though I've been told that means next to nothing. The fact that it works perfectly with Pelikan 4001 "giant" ink cartridges. I've looked through the Pelikan "Product Finder" to no avail. I don't know if this discounts it being a Pelikan pen entirely, or may just a modern Pelikan pen? Sorry for being so absolutely clueless, and thank you for your help! - Cerek Here are some images of the pen:
  7. Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Years are stunning. the size and proportions are almost perfect. I also love the fact that they come in extremely exotic and rare materials. However, the ones with my favourite materials are too round. The 2014 one is nice, but it's too gold... I really like ebony wood and the GvFC Classic and Intuition come in that material, but the Classic is too thin and the Intuition is too fat. I love the gold lined nib and external feed on the Intuition, but the nib shape is odd. I also like matte black. The Omas Paragon and Parker Premier come in stealth, but I hate the guilloche on the Omas and apart from the stealth, the Parker's kinda meh. Sorry if you're a fan of those. Sterling silver and titanium are also nice materials, but the Yard-o-Leds are too silver and I can't find many pens in titanium. Oak's a nice wood, but I only know of one pen in this material and I don't think it's my grail. As you can see, the most important aspect of a fountain pen, to me, is the looks. It probably shouldn't be. The material is also what attracts me to a pen. I'm definitely being way too nitpicky with these pens. Of course I can't get my grail pen even if I discover it, because I don't even have the funds. Thanks for reading Sorry if I annoyed you.
  8. Hello, I am handwriting lover, in school, in college etc I always focused on my handwriting, I used to be obsessed that much with my handwriting that I used to change my handwriting daily in the school but after a long journey of this I finally made my hand legible enough to get a better grip on paper, so I have uploaded a sample of my handwriting here, my question is that 1) tell me that what type of handwriting is this? 2) Is this handwriting suitable for exams? 3) Is it legible and easy to read? 4) Is my handwriting beautiful good looking or bad looking? 5:) Should I continue to write like this? and please also rate my handwriting out of 10. Thanks.
  9. We are pleased to announce the Scriptus Toronto Pen and Writing Show, to be held November 2, 2014. It is exciting to have a pen & writing show in Toronto again, the first since 2010. The plans are exciting: pens, old and new; fine papers, stationery and greeting cards; inks of every colour and kind. We plan to have over thirty vendors in attendance, from far and wide. There will be something for everyone, and then some! The venue is fabulous. The Appel salon—located on the second floor of the Toronto Reference Library—is both world-class, and the premier location for literary and specialty events in downtown Toronto. Just steps from the hub of the transit system, and close to one of the major traffic arteries, it is convenient for everyone. (And on a Sunday, traffic in minimal and parking is cheap!) In a newly-renovated space, and with a first-class coffee shop downstairs, Scriptus will be an enjoyable day for all. How can you keep up with Scriptus news and announcements? We are on Twitter (@ScriptusToronto), Facebook, and on the official Scriptus blog: http://www.scriptustoronto.com. (A spot in the sidebar puts you on our mailing list, to be notified right away when we post announcements.) Details to come include exhibitors lists, sponsorship opportunities, admission charge, and more.
  10. Dear Fountain Pen Network Friends, I am new to The Fountain Pen Network website and admittedly, an amateur collector in the fountain pen world. Five years ago, the first fountain pen I ever purchased was through a Chinese merchant on eBay. I bought a Waterman Phileas, black, with a steel medium point nib; the sale included a plastic box with a velvet interior and an international ink cartridge, black. I spent around $26. Since then, my interest in fountain pens has become more than an obsessive hobby; it is an intense admiration of all antiquities. I continued purchasing pens through eBay--mostly vintage Sheaffar pens that needed repairing--and plain black and blue inks in cheaply made inkwells for the next two years. Presently, all of my recent fountain pen purchases have been through GouletPens.com. After completing my four years in college as an undergraduate and as a student majoring in Philosophy while minoring in Comparative Literature and Creative Writing, I have decided to continue my education to become a graduate student with the prospects of earning a PhD in Continental Philosophy as well as a master's degree in Comparative Russian Literature--an ambitious attempt since the only other language I speak is Spanish, poorly, but enough to get me by. Knowing very well that my scholastic pursuits will lead me to a career where writing is as common as showering or brushing one's teeth, I began, at an early age, to keep a diary to train my hands in the art of writing (as a young rebellious-of-all-things-religious Catholic school student, I was forced to learn cursive writing; as an adult, my writing style is a hybrid of both print and cursive). In high school, I was a Graphic Arts student and knew that not all paper was made the same. Whenever I tried using my Waterman Phileas on recycled leaves of paper, it would bleed through the page and onto another--obviously I was writing as slow as a sloth. I began searching for paper that could withstand the generous flow of ink from a fountain pen. I came across a leather diary by PaperChase. Bleeding was less of an issue with this diary, but still a problem. To make this autobiographical account of my history with fountain pens and durable paper short, being that this is my first post on The Fountain Pen Network, I ask this: what are the best fountain pens a student can buy that are under $100? Moreover, it is important to note that pen and paper are, for lack of a better word, harmoniously symbiotic; therefore, what kind of paper can withstand the torturous swaying, swiping, and scratching of a nib? Furthermore, what would a fountain pen expert recommend when suggesting inks?--please, be playful with this one. Currently, my daily drivers (or, the fountain pens I carry with me and use daily), in order of least favorable to favorable, are the Pilot Metropolitan, black, with a steel medium nib; the Reform 1745, green and black, with a gold plated (correct me if I am wrong) medium iridium point nib; and finally, a TWSBI Diamond 580, transparent (hence, the diamond) body, with a steel fine point nib. All pens are filled with Diamine's Red Dragon ink--a personal favorite which makes all writing feel like a tribute to William Blake. Finally, the diary I carry with me is a hardback 5 x 8.25 Moleskine Classic Notebook with plain pages only because, as Juan Ramon Jimenez wrote, "If they give you ruled paper, write the other way." My Fountain Pen Network friends, I hope you can enlighten me on how best to pursue a lifestyle in purchasing the right pen, ink and paper, and I trust that your insight will not only direct me, but will also be of some use to others. Thank you. Truly Yours, G. L. P. S. To keep within the limited amount of upload space I have been given, I will uploaded pictures of the nibs for the aforementioned fountain pens. I have also included a picture of the ink I primarily use.
  11. For a while now, I have had my eye on both of those pens. I've read reviews about both, but none of which help... I write unposted to start. I understand both are indeed small, that isn't really an issue though considering I write with my Scheaffer Craftsman (Thanks again Matt!) unposted. And That pen is considerably small. I will not take any nibs larger than a fine. I write too small and all nibs larger than fine, make my handwriting unreadable. So, what is the better pen to invest into? What has a smoother nib? A nicer feel in the hand? Any help is appreciated. And thank you all for taking time to read my thread! ~Phil
  12. Hey guys, so I recently bought the pen that I have described in the title from Ebay, it was the ballpoint version. I'm trying to get a refund on it because I believe to have been duped or ripped off. Now I was to believe that the serial number on the clip is supposed to match the one supplied in the certification booklet and the handbook. They do not, however the seller assures me this pen came straight from a registered retailer and has not been tampered with. The clip number in the paperwork is PW2344002. The number on the actual pen clip is XW1058636. Surely this means that the clip has either been changed or the paperwork is to a different pen. Am I wrong to think this? Is there something special with the diamond ones or am I right? Thankyou Ben
  13. Hey there, Totally new here so please excuse me if I already broke a rule! I was cleaning out my attic the other day and found a few pens that appear to be pretty old. Can anyone help me identify them and possibly their worth. They are very nice and hardly used. I want to start using them. One is Waterman the other a Cross. There are a few more and I will post them later. I know we got a hold of the Waterman back in 1992, the cross might be older. http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090055PM_zps30e7a19c.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090103PM_zps500c57b2.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090121PM_zps9093c700.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090200PM_zps466c8fb6.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090315PM_zpsc4e75f62.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090332PM_zps13ca0266.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/thrawn999/PhotoMar2090259PM_zpsfb284f1c.jpg
  14. I found this case at a price I can commit. Has anyone had experience with it? I have a 12 pen case but need a two or three pen case to carry them out in my purse. Here it is: $18.00
  15. How rare or special is this pen? Cannot believe this. Search for: Hello kitty ARITA YAKI Fountain pen On EBbay
  16. I'm currently taking exams in school. I came prepared with a fully inked up Faber-Castell Ambition with Noodler's Black. I sit in the examination hall and look around. The person sitting in front of me is using a Bic Cristal with a sponge grip attachment. Someone across from me has a chunk of blue-tack stuck to his Bic as a grip. I chuckled internally. The F-C Ambition barely even has a grip, but after >2 straight hours of writing, my hand wasn't sore. This really shows how practical a fountain pen can really be. By the way, I finished a whole converter full of ink that day. I wrote so much that the ink got so dry I had to push ink into the feed with the converter. Kaiju Blue Ink? (Pacific Rim)

I recently saw the 2013 movie, 'Pacific Rim.' Pretty cool movie about giant robots fighting giant-alien-monsters, called 'Kaiju' http://cdn1.sciencefiction.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/pacific-rim-poster-banner.jpg The blood of these Kaiju looks really cool. Do you know of an ink that looks anything like it? The blue colours seen here: http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130706114235/pacificrim/images/7/7a/Pacific-Rim-Kaiju-blood.jpghttp://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/pacific-rim-kaiju-sea-monster.jpghttp://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130614023456/pacificrim/images/c/c8/Otachi_close_up.jpg

    Old Parker Pen Identification

This old fountain pen belonged to my grandfather and I think is at least more than 40 years old. It still works beautifully. My grandfather couldn't read or write but he could sign his name so that's all it may have been used for. Does anyone have an idea about model or history please? See writing here http://www.stamfordnotebooks.co.uk/parker-pen/ Thanks Paul paul@stamfordnotebooks.co.uk
  19. Hi all! I'm looking for a black ink with a fast drying time for use on regular inkjet/office paper. My previous focus on inks has primarily been towards permanency and flow but now I need to find something that will dry fast and not feather on cheaper paper. Anyone got any good ideas, preferably for something I can source quickly in the UK. With these qualities in mind I hear good things on this site about J.Herbin Perle Noire, Waterman Black but if there are any others please let me know. Thanks, Badger

    Reform Pen Leaking

Hi everyone, About a week ago I found an abandoned fountain pen in my drawer. I decided I'll try and make it work, since it always had a problem which I could never fix. The problem is that the ink seems to be leaking, but I don't know where from. I tried cleaning it, I soaked it the entire day in lukewarm water to clean its system from ink, then I filled a cartridge with water to test if it leaks. The water obviously has different characteristics than ink, so it seemed not to leak then (or I didn't notice it, since it's water). After that I put a usual ink cartridge in it to see if it still leaks. Well, it leaked. I took some photos of it so you can see how it leaks, if it's any use. I can't find the source of the leakage, it's not where the cartridge is, so it must be somewhere near the nib. Is there a possibility it cracked somewhere? When I leave it standing with its cap on, and when I open it the second day, it's mysteriously covered in ink like in the photo. It writes normally (not too thick), but a bit light because of the water experiment. Can I fix this anyhow? Thank you Here are the photos: http://s9.postimg.org/o4dkh6l6z/IMG_3118.jpg http://s9.postimg.org/ftrr9cpmz/IMG_3121.jpg http://s9.postimg.org/4nsuunq2z/IMG_3122.jpg http://s9.postimg.org/e1u70pgwb/IMG_3123.jpg http://s9.postimg.org/sstkcdadn/IMG_3124.jpg
  21. Hi would anyone be able to identify when this v20 14kt pen was produced? Came across it during a clear out of a relatives home and it has never been used Thanks
  22. So I've been writing with the Lamy Al-Star XF for a while now. I am a high school student, but I am looking to upgrade to a new pen. I plan on working for a few summers and want to buy to say a graduation pen. I want to buy a pen that I can be proud of owning. I'm looking for some pens in the $30-$100 or even more. Any suggestions? P.S I am interested in the Pilot Vanishing Point.
  23. Hey, I forgot to cap my fountain pen earlier today and accidentally stabbed myself in the face. What steps can I take now to get rid of it, or will it just fade away over time?
  24. So, I have two big events coming up: On 23rd March (in a week) I turn 21 In September, I start my dissertation (/thesis, I think Americans call it?)Said dissertation is a 10,000 word piece of writing - in my case, the subject is maritime history. I'd love to hand write this, at least before I type it up, because I find that's the best way for me to work. I'm going to buy some ivory a4 paper to keep in a ring binder (suggestions for paper would be awesome too, come to think of it), but what pen and ink should I use? I love my Safaris but the grip section can get a little slippy if my hand is sweaty. I adore my Nexx but I'd like this pen to be a 21st birthday present to myself and a Nexx just doesn't cut it. And what ink? I mean, my first thought is blue or turquoise (sea colours) but any other ideas? For the pen, my ''wish list'' is: Light pen - though not so light it's fragile Medium nib or 1.1mm italic available Around £50-100 Preferably with a convertor or piston-fill (or vac fill) Preferably not black. I don't know, I'm just not a fan of black pens. Not too big - tiny hands. I'm only 5"3 and even then my hands are small for my size. Ideally available easily - Goulet's, thewritingdesk, cult pens, amazon type easy. There are NO pen stores near me, before you suggest that - I have looked! Thanks, Charlie
