I've now had this pen for long enough, and used it enough, to feel like I can at least give it a decent review. With a quick search, I pulled up a review that included a lot of photos of packaging and things, so I won't include those. I don't pay much attention to them anyway. Suffice it to say, the pen was safe and secure in the plastic pen case. Brand: Faber Castell Pen Name: Ambition Model: Pearwood Nib: Fine Intro: A friend purchased the pen for me as a gift to start my new job. I had ogled the pen previously, as I thought it was gorgeous. Simply holding it in the store, no ink, it felt very natural in my hand. I love the feel of the wood on my fingers. It's a silly, non-empirical sentiment, but it feels very New England to me, so seemed appropriate with my origins in MA. Appearance/Design: 10/10 Clean, gorgeous, "mission" styling. I'm biased. This pen plays to all of my stylistic preferences. Clean lines, warm (untreated) natural wood, unadorned metal, and what I think of as Shaker or Mission styling with the straight, square, simple but sturdy look. I look at this pen and I WANT to write with it. Construction/Quality: 8/10 Very little flimsy here. There's very little here that seems like it could break. The threads on the metal-core body are appear brass. The pocket clip is Faber-Castell's lovely levered clip which is easy to use and doesn't get over-stressed. Everything fits very tightly, there are no visible cracks, weak points, glue joins, etc. The only worries here are the plastic lining in the cap, which seems like it could eventually wear out as it's a very tight cap (something I value). Also, a core feature of the pen is the untreated wood. If you write with it regularly you'll probably be fine. If you care for it like you would untreated wood, you'll likely be fine. But as it's thin, I could see it drying out and cracking if left alone in a box for too long, like a guitar or such. Here's the clip Weight/Dimensions: 10/10 or 5/10 Perfect for me, Heavy cap for posting Posted, the pen is 6.2 inches long and 1.1 ounces - long and hefty Unposted, the pen is only 4.8 inches long and... much lighter. I don't post. This is lucky for me, as the cap is mostly metal, while the body is light wood and light metal so posted it feels top-heavy. I also have small hands and a slightly "off" grip. I love the light, thin, straight body, and the "short" barrel is just large enough that I actually alternate gripping the pen there, and on the wood, depending what kind of writing I'm doing. However, if you have larger hands/fingers, be aware that you will have to hold it by the wood or get used to your finger tips overlapping the seam between metal and wood. If you like the hefty, broad bodied, "power pens" then the slim line of this "skinnypen" likely won't make your heart sing. Nib/Performance: 9/10 mid-flow, smooth, a bit broad I tend to prefer super-fine, dryer writers, as I write a lot of really tiny stuff. This pen doesn't do that, which at first really disappointed me. Then I got some other pens, actually used this one at work, and came to appreciate it more. I'm now on refill 3 and I've only been using it for a month, that's how much I use it. It's so far played nice with Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin, De Atramentis Black Edition Brown, and Platinum Carbon Black. I have a Fine nib. They come in EF/F/M/B. The Fine is not as fine as I'd like. That's really not the fault of the nib, it's the fault of my being used to Japanese Fine and my friend not being a FP person. Objectively, it does fall into the "fine" category. That said, the nib is a beautiful steel with iridium tip, and I've yet to have a hard-start. While I don't always prefer broader/wetter writers, I've taken to carrying this with me to meetings if I might need to write on unknown paper. It doesn't flex, at least not much with the pressure I'm willing to put on it. That's fine, it's not what I use it for. The writing is very smooth, with just a bit of feedback, even on cruddy paper, even after it has sat for a few days unused, and that feature I love. I consider it a "wetter" writer, but that's in comparison with my other pens, which are mostly Pilots currently, none of which are wet at all. It's certainly not sloshy like my Creaper. And that wetness is what facilitates the crappy paper writing. (of note, I have Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin in it at the moment). Filling System and Maintenance: 8/10 It came with a Faber-Castell converter already installed, but that's easily taken in and out and replaced. The nib and grip are easily separable, and both screw into position. The converter is simple to operate. I don't know how you would clean the wood if it became ink stained. I haven't smudged enough yet to stain. I probably will, because I am not a neat person. I worry about this, and hope my finger oils will protect it some. Otherwise, the pen doesn't seem very high-maintenance. It filled easily and wrote flawlessly straight out of the box, and re-filled equally easily. Certainly caused me less issues than my newly acquired Platinum Plaisir *looks at bright orange hands* Taken apart. You can easily unscrew the nib from the metal grip as well. Cost/Value: 7/10 A bit pricey, but worth it for me I'll admit I have little idea about this one. It feels worth it to me. I ADORE the styling on this pen, I really like the way it writes, and use it regularly. It cost $150 with the converter, which is the high range of what this pen can cost, but having bought it from a physical store I could go back and have them mess with it if something goes wrong. I write with it on a daily basis, and it's my go-to pen when I need to write on unknown paper, or when I'm practicing my penmanship with quotes on Rhodia or sugar cane paper because, like I said, it makes me WANT to write. So, for me, totally worth it. For others? If you want a thin, low maintenance pen, that you probably won't post, that's really reliable and writes like butter... it's probably worth it. It came from Paradise Pens in Reston, VA. They only had Medium nibs in stock, and I pretty much only use Fine and Extra-Fine. The shop was happy to send out for a Fine tip, and it came within a week. He didn't realize they made an Extra-Fine. Conclusion: 8.7 or 7.8 I love this pen with all my little heart. I'm not broadly experienced yet, but for me it's one of my go-to pens. With this and my Pilot Cavalier, I feel like I can write on just about any paper I need to and am not going to have problems. I love the feel of it in my hand and it makes me want to write better. It definitely has it's flaws, especially if you're a poster, or have big hands, but I'm neither. I worry about the wood, but the wood is also the reason I love it so much (mm tactile). Hopefully this is helpful! If you're new to FPs and have small hands like me, it's definitely worth the monetary leap.

It's time for a new pen! I'm looking for a pen in ~$200 price range. I'm quite fascinated by the Pelikan Souveran line, Pilot Custom Heritage Line, Omas pens, and the Sailor PG/1911 line, but I'm not sure as to what pen would be the best. However, I'm certainly not limiting myself to just these brands; I'm open to any new ideas too. I'm looking for a nib that, while not labeled as semiflex, will give a little. A nice, springy nib. I'm looking for suggestions(online, UK) as to which pen to get, with £55. To explain....my dear husband, who beamed up to heaven some months ago, had a very old car, which has been sitting in it's space behind our building.....it's been unusable for years, an ancient Clio, but last week so done smashed a window, broke in, tried to steal it, with no luck. Anyway, I knew I needed it to go....and it was incredibly difficult to arrange, as the entrance to the parking spaces behind the building is a limited height access. The nearest I had managed to get was so done who would charge me £100 to do it.... Long story short, I found a place with a truck which could fit, and rather than me paying them, they paid me, so I have a cheque for £55 fir the scrap/salvage( plus all the proper paperwork.....husband was an ex policeman in Glasgow, and I learned a few things from him) So, Picard has gone(I always named our cars....this one was called Picard, as it's first letter was a P. I know. Daft. There it is).... I want to buy a pen with the money.....I've a few ideas already, but would love to hear any suggestions.... Alex

Hey guys I have an oversized crest triumph and I was wondering, for future reference replacing the sac, how is the section affixed?

I was messing around yesterday, using my phone and tablet's LCD screens for lighting. I put a white image on them and used a black hoodie as a backdrop. The screens were the only sources of light. The original images were 14MP, but they were resized to fit this post. I have no clue about photography, and would appreciate some advice and feedback. Hello, This is my first post so I hope I have put it in the right place I'm just getting into calligraphy and am hoping to use it on our wedding invitation envelopes. I have bought a few products but I'm unsure if the combination I have is correct as it just doesn't seem to be working for me. I have purchased an oblique pen holder which I prefer much more than the straight one so far. Nib wise I have (don't know if these are the proper names) Nikkopen G, Speedball C6, Hunt Imperial 101 and Brause 66EF (snapped 1 tine already.) Ink I have an unlabelled black ink which seems to be very thin but works with most of my nibs and also Winsor & Newton calligraphy ink in white and metallic gold. I've been trying to use the Imperial 101 as I really like the flexibility but with the metallic gold ink (what I'm wanting to use on the envelopes) it just isn't working. When I do my down stroke when I start to put a little bit of pressure on it it's like all of the ink just drops out. I'm also having trouble with getting the ink to flow through properly, I find I having to play around every few letters to try and get the ink to flow properly. Any suggestions you have on the equipment or if I'm just doing it wrong would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Cassie

HEll0 to all , i was planning to buy a jinhao 599 , but now i got some money and now i can afford up to $12 worth of pen keep in mind that in India this is a lot of money ,so i am planning to get a good fountain pen i do not want a Parker though ,and pilot pens over here go 25%more than the cost price ,so no to that too the pen should be light weight , and be easy to write with for long periods of time. as i do not know how to smoothen a nib ,it would be favorable if it comes smooth in pack QWNM ,tk

Im pretty new to fountain pens in general, and saw this, and wondered if anyone could give me a bit more detail....please pardon my ignorance in advance - I go by the notion that the only silly question is the one unasked, so, what exactly is a dipless desk pen? Are the pens filled, them kept in the desk set, rather like my Parker 51 in it's red glass Whitefriars ball? Or, are they actual inkwells, which one fills? Not sure if this should go in Inky Thoughts or here, so apologies in advance if I made the Wrong Choice I was having a flushing and filling session yesterday, and noticed that one pen and ink combination was virtually unflushable: Monteverde Impressa, with Iroshizuku momiji( which disappointed me by being much pinker than I expected) After about half an hour of repeated flushing with just water, it - the converter - was still very very pink. I gave up after that, and will have another try later, but it got me wondering.....are some inks just so "stainy"(not the correct word, I know, but it conveys the meaning, I think) that you have to have a dedicated pen for them? And does anyone do that in any case - keep the pairing if same pen with same ink? Alex

Can anyone help me to identify what model this Waterman fountain pen is ? I've had it for quite a few years now and it is a lovely blue and speckled black colour although photographs don't show just how blue it is ... It is a lovely writer but a finer writing nib than you get with most Waterman medium nibs butI have no idea what model it might be....

Hi. I got this pen for about $8 of an auction at Tradera (swedish eBay) I have tried to find som information about the pen without any luck. The thing i have found out is that the swan symbol should be the logo for Mabie Todd. Is that correct? The modell is a Standard Pen and is a piston filler with a nr. 4 Ero 14k F nib with some flex. So I've been on the hunt for a few years for a nice pen display case that matched my room's black wood furniture. Embarrassed to say I first filled up a 24 pen, then a 36 pen rosewood display case from Penn State Industries. Loved 'em but the brown wood and gold knobs clashed with my furniture. Finally got a beautiful, compact black display case from Ferocase on Ebay. I was nervous at first because of dneal's earlier review. (https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/283326-ferocase-pen-chest/) The display case came in this week and it is awesome! It has a black finish and chrome knobs that match my furniture beautifully. Only drawback is the case capacity is 56 pens! Dangerous LOL! I guess I can grow into it. I highly recommend the black color. It did not have the wood veneer, paint or drawer divider alignment issues that dneal experienced.

Hello everyone, I was told to move my mod over here to discuss it. It is a Noodler's Konrad with a Hunt 56 nib in it. I had to heat set the feed for it and I may have accidentally heat up the grip section during the feed setting but I did squeeze that as well just in case. I say that the grip section may have been set as well because after the mod it appears not to be able to close in the cap as smoothly. That being said, I am very pleased with my work and I tried a few nibs but this one worked the best for this configuration.It flows well and you can see one railroad but I was going pretty fast and trying to go to bed. So these aren't the best pictures but if you guys are interested I can post more detailed photos later or a video to Youtube if anyone really cares. I just don't want to put a lot of effort in if you guys don't care about modding your Konrads. I haven't had any starting issues with the pen and it does not railroad under normal writing conditions. The ink is Noodler's X-Feather and the paper is G. LALO.

Hello everyone, So I've been wanting for a while now get a Mont Blanc ballpoint or rollerball. Just because my line of work does not allow me to use fountain pens because of the bleed through on the paper. I currently have a montblanc 146 fountain pen that I would be willing to sell or even trade for a ballpoint. In your opinion, which one is better a ballpoint or rollerball. I love smooth gel like writing. What are your thoughts and is anyone willing to trade or something that.
