Hi, On the 20th May 2016 I am lucky to be going to Tokyo and Osaka. What would you contemplate buying that is interesting, different, you cannot buy elsewhere, (especially the United Kingdom) etc. and from where? I am into Urban Sketching so also want to visit there art supply shops It could be pens, strange nibs on pens, pencils, paper, inks, calligraphy (like), sharpeners or anything else pen, calligraphy or stationary related. All suggestions no matter how wild and wacky will be very welcome

Hello there, There are definitions and terms sometimes that I bump into and don't know meaning of. Would appreciate your help in clarifying. Let's start with definitions of words. Refillable and loose-leaf are basically synonyms of same thing i.e. in this case paper that is removable. Is that correct and which of these 2 words are more used today? Moving on to leather journal with binder rings, are these also "loose-leaf"? Can they be referred to as "loose-leaf construction" journals or something? I wouldn't think "refillable" makes sense for refillable journal whereas in paper context "refillable paper" sounds right. Now about paper. is there typical term for paper that is fountain pen, gel pen and rollerball pens "friendly"? Sometimes I want to know how to distinguish such paper from normal everyday paper. When I want to buy Leuchtturm 1917 paper or Clairefontaine, I always find by brand name but is there something general that would help me find paper by quality rather than by brand? Does "quality writing paper" make sense to anyone? Thanks!

Australian Pen Enthusiasts Finding It Hard To Get Good Stuff?

hey guys, my name is jamie and i am new to this network, and i was having difficulty finding some quality high GSM paper that wont bleed or feather when i write on them with wet pens like the jinhao x450. Are any og you guys having the same issue ? it seems to me that there isnt really enough places to get quality things for fountain pens, becuase officeworks doesnt carry any paper with a GSM high enough to not bleed like crazy, and they have a very very limited range of fountain pens. what sort of stuff are my australian mates having difficulty finding? -
Recently I purchased some of Q-Connect's lovely Banker's Paper (a little like Tomoe River). I like thin papers and crinkly ones, but a little while ago someone sent me a letter on a really beautiful thick paper. Now this wasn't just a textured paper, it was thick, thick. It was made in very small batches and only available in in its country of production from the actual factory/mill. I think it may have been a cotton paper. Since getting that lovely letter on such wonderful paper I've been looking for something similar (I know I can't get the actual paper in question). I've had a good look around, but I have yet to see anything close to it. I have nice, quite thick (but very stiff) cards from G Lalo with that lovely rough edge and the paper I got in the letter had that same rough edge but wasn't as stiff. Does anyone know of a source for the sort of paper I'm trying to describe?

Hello! Does anyone have any experience using the Anorak notebooks (such as these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=anorak+notenook) with fountain pens? I see that they're made by Moleskine, which gives me pause right there, but wondered if their paper might be fountain-pen friendly nonetheless. I have been unable to find reviews that cover this topic; if I've missed something here on FPN and someone would like to point me toward it, I would be grateful. Thank you in advance for any input! Printable Blue French Ruled Paper (Us Letter Size)

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here! I had previously seen pdfs available for printing seyes ruled paper, however none had lines as dark as I would have liked. I had found one with bold lines, however the liens were orange, and I wasn't exactly a big fan. After a few seconds in Photoshop, however, I changed the lines to blue, while still keeping their bold characteristics. Without further ado, I present to you the Bold Blue Seyes! Writing Speed And Paper Texture: Will It Change My Habit?

I've noticed that it is nearly impossible to write slowly on paper that has even a tiny bit of texture. As in, the resistance created by the 'peaks' and 'valleys' on the paper surface can only be overcome if one writes at a particular speed. Only then the curves are smooth, and the handwriting flowing. Does that mean my handwriting will be 'bound' to the type of paper I use for practice? A smoother texture would mean more slippage, while a rougher texture would be even worse. Is there a 'control' in this experiment I can use? Nib? Flow? Something that helps me adjust as I encounter variation in paper quality? This has become a point of distress. -
Maybe this is old news, but has anyone notice a big price hike on Rhodia paper, specifically the pads? I remember I used to be able to find them for under $6 two years ago, and now on Amazon I can't find it sub $10. Even at Goulet it is now as expensive as the Clairefontaine Triomphe paper.

I thought it might be useful to post the front & back scan of a quick test I did with a number of pens, starting with "relatively wet" to "relatively average" pens. Hello all, Firstly, I really like my Rhodia webbies. That said, I'm finding that the most recent one I got (orange cover, lined, v3.0) has led to some feathering and bleedthrough that has not occured before. I've only used four colours on the new one, but one of them---Diamine Imperial Blue (Ahab)---gets both problems. I double checked with the same combo in my previous webbie (black cover, lined, v3.0), and no problems with that one. Same room and time of day. For info, the other two inks didn't have the same problems: - Diamine Grey in an Ahab: fine, but less smooth letter edges - Diamine Onyx Black in Pelikan M200 (M) - Pelikan Mandarin in Lamy Safari (M) Am I just unlucky? Obviously this isn't all inks and pens so I'm not complaining too much! Was wondering if maybe there are significant batch differences or something.

My Roaring Spring comp book is nearly full and ebay is $4 + shipping. Purchased Vietnamese made 100 page composition book from Target for $0.52 today. Item #081-01-0244. Not terrible bleed nor feathering with my wettest combo Noodlers AHAB + Bay State Blue. Internet says they are only available in store.

Hi, I am currently a student in college. I would like to share this notebook that I recently bought. However, I bought it with a cheaper price. Reasonable size for note taking (B5), similar to a composition notebook. No bleed-through, at least I don't see any. Minimal show-through, writing on both sides is possible. Simple design, no logos or markings on the notebook cover. Cons: Some feathering with certain inks. In my case, the Nemosine Singularity with Noodler's La Couleur Royale. The corners of the notebook may bend easily. Things to be aware of: The color and texture of the notebook feel like Fabriano EcoQua, cream colored and with some texture. It's a lined notebook. The drying time depends on the ink and pen. My Pilot Cavalier F dried more slowly than my Pilot 78G B did. This is a bound notebook. It will lay flat as the binding breaks in, or you can just exert some force to make it lay flat. The 6mm ruling could be too narrow for some people. There are only 30 sheets/60 pages in one notebook. I recommend using drier inks with a fine nib, although the Pilot 78G B with Noodler's Kiowa Pecan performed well, but I don't think a broad nib is suitable for such narrow ruling. Good evening, I have just finished my last sheet of G Lalo writing paper and am looking to replace it with something a bit different. In an ideal world I'd find a nice cream, light grey or mid blue paper available in quarto sizes with a nice watermark but I am a realist! Smythson is just too expensive, Clairefontaine as far as I can see only do white and G Lalo (at least the blue) just isn't terribly interesting. I usually just print the address on at home so I'm not looking to acquire reams of personalised paper. So can anyone recommend a good paper that can easily be acquired in England?! Christmas evening (Friday, Dec. 25) I ordered paper from Paper for Fountain Pens. Saturday, the next day I got a notice saying it had been shipped, so I expected it would arrive sometime this week. It arrived this morning, Monday, Dec. 28. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't experienced it!

Has anyone here used Leeds paper? I bought a leather padfolio and it came with a spiral bound 5.5" x 8" Leeds journal. The paper is great. It is thick, doesnt feather or bleed and I can use both sides of the paper with no problem. I mostly write with a Twsbi 580AL in fine and use Iroshizuku inks but even with a medium nib Cross or Parker that will bleed thru on most paper does not on this Leeds paper.The best part is a 100 page notebook/journal is only $3.05. I have zero affiliation with this company but thought it was worth mentioning as even my Google searches turned up nothing. They make most of the popular sizes and offer a few different bindings. Definitely worth a look.

Seeking Paper Advice For A New Journal

Long time reader, first time poster I'm seeking help with selecting a new journal. In spite of trying a number of different papers (Tomoe River, HP Premium Choice Laser, Rhodia, Fabriano, Muji), I still find myself using Moleskine Volant journals. The quality is all over the place, but when it's good I like the feedback and absorbency of the paper. I find that with papers like the Rhodia and HP the pen sort of glides over the surface without much feel or feedback. I'm not looking for a rough paper, but I don't like it when the paper is super smooth or feels coated. I'd stick with Moleskine, but I don't like the brand or company and also want something with more consistent quality. I'm hoping to find something available in A5 with less than 100 pages, but I'm also open to binding A4 loose leaf, having tried that with the HP paper. If it's important, I typically write with fine japanese nibs and Pilot Iroshizuku inks. Thanks in advance for all of your advice! -
Pif - White Tomoe River 5 Sheets

About three months ago in August, I rediscovered my want to restart my calligraphy practices (which weren't much). I am a student with a small job, which is enough for me to buy some pens and pen paraphernalia left and right, while also trying to save up for things like a Mac and possibly a car (which will probably never happen). I bought my first pen, the Pilot Plumix, and fell in love with fountain pens. It followed with two Jinhaos, a Kaweco Sport, a Pilot Metropolitan, and about three months, 5 bottles of ink and 13 pens in total later, I am absolutely a pen lover! I bought Rhodia DotPads and discovered the importance of paper to ink, and then discovered Tomoe River. And so, to the PIF, I recently discovered that I had a sample of unopened, brand new Tomoe River paper from JetPens. This paper is white and included are 5 sheets, size A5. I am giving the sample away because I recently got a lovely CRV from amberleadavis which came with some extra sheets paper, as well as bought myself some correspondence paper from paperforfountainpens(dot)com. This PIF is for the CONUS. I would prefer this to go out to a Newbie who is brand new to fountain pens, college student/high school student who is on a budget and cannot afford paper, or a person who has never tried Tomoe River paper before.. I will draw using random.org TBA when this gets a decent amount of entries. Please state how you got into Fountain Pens, how long ago, why you would like to try Tomoe River etc and I will draw from those entries! (PS - free shipping) -
Just a quick warning to anyone considering Daler Rowney Calligraphy paper....don't. I haven't had wonderful experience of Daler Rowney notebooks so perhaps I should have known better, but I saw a book of sheets of calligraphy paper for sale and thought they looked like quite nice textured paper. The pad actually has three different shades of paper in it, all at 90gsm. It feathers. It's horrible and scratchy even with the smoothest of nibs. It bleeds and has show through. Horrifically bad paper at a premium price. Do not buy, it's just nasty. I find I get really irritated by poor, sub standard paper which is charged at a premium price; especially when they charge a lot of money for it. It is becoming more common these days because it's not so noticeable that it is actually junk paper if you are writing with a biro, but then I'd really appreciate it if they charged the junk price rather than rip me off and charge a premium for junk.

I'll write in English since other people may benefit from this as well (who knows). Spiral papers are awesome! At least in the sense that it does not show bleed through or shadowing at all even at 80gr/m^2. I bought this one http://www.spiral.com.br/produto/papel-80g-210x297-verge-diamante-branco-spiral-pt-100-fl/479721 It has some texture to it, which may be annoying for some, but overall it feels very nice and soft. I tried with Diamine's Oxblood, Sargasso Sea (which is WET) and Eclipse. No bleed at all. Just a minor shadowing, even when I applied a lot of ink in the same line. It is still quick to absorb ink, so no sheen at all. Thumbs up.

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right place ( I checked marketwatch, and wasn't able to post there), but I recently purchased 100 sheets of Tomoe River paper, and liked it so much that I started researching options for buying in bulk. It appears that the parent company in Japan will only sell it in very large amounts and, then, shipping becomes cost prohibitive. To that end, I started a poll on Massdrop to see if anyone else might be interested in acquiring larger quantities of the paper than are currently available. There is no group buy or "drop" yet; this is strictly to gauge interest. I've only purchased through the company once, for the Emerald of Chivor drop, and my experience was a good one. Vintage Postcard - Fp Friendly - Is It The Paper Or The Pen?

Being new to the FP writing hobby and enjoying the nib>feed>ink>paper interface, I have been writing postcards to friends and family just for the pleasure of a lovely image on the front and the nuance of the weighted line on the back. Having spent >16 years in Europe, I prefer recognizable images of landmarks because they are emotive. I purchased a postcard set that was art images of Parisian landmarks and had a terrific start. The cards were well printed and the side for correspondence accepted J-fine nib*- Heart of Darkness (who knows where a postcard will go on its return to France). So, I bought a packet of "Vintage, retro" postcards of travel images from via Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ED8O3P8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 When the well wrapped package arrived I enjoyed the reproduction photos of travel postcards on the front. The very glossy reverse side (where you write) rejected HoD even after 60 minutes dry time. Is the expectation that the writing tool of the era (vintage, retro) a fountain pen, would be rejected by these cards? I have posted elsewhere the chicken-egg conundrum of FP use. Is it the pen that can't write on the paper or the paper that won't accept the ink? I do feel duped by the retro promise but the return postage was more than the value of the cards. Maybe I forgot my Latin and caveat emptor. *J-fine nib is to differentiate Japanese line width as opposed to W-fine nib for Western. -
Well me and the girl friend just finished up for the night on our handmade hardback journal. It utilizes coptic binding so that no matter what page you are writing on it lays flat, which has always bugged me about most journals and books I have purchased in the past.
