    Lamy 2000 Nibs

I'm looking for opinions on nib size for a contemplated purchase of a Lamy 2000. I've seen reviews that say L2K nibs run wide and others that say they are true to western standards. I like line variation and use several broad and stub nib pens, but the streamlined design of the Lamy just cries out of a sleeker line. I would carry it alongside my TWSBI 1.1 stub for example. But I don't want an XF. So medium seems the natural choice but I'm still unsure between M and regular F. Lamy users, is fine wide enough to enjoy shading and variation of line? Thanks KenL

    Kaweco Ice Sport Nibs

Hi all, I have a Kaweco Ice Sport with a medium nib. I find this far too broad for my tastes, so wanted to order an extra fine. I've found an excellent price online at Tiger Pens - £7.99 for the nib & section but it states it fits: Kaweco AL Sport Kaweco AC Sport Kaweco Art Sport Kaweco Sport Luxe Kaweco Lilliput Kaweco Student and not the Ice Sport or Classic. Is this simply because they have transparent sections, and this replacement is black? Or is there a size difference? I was thinking of just taking the nib itself from the section and swapping that over, which means the colour difference ceases to be an issue, but are the nibs themselves the same dimensions? Best wishes & thanks in advance Robin
  4. What kind of service do Bock provide? It seems like so many pen makers use Bock nibs, yet so many reviews also comment of the various properties of company specific features like the "conway stewart", or "Visconti" feel of a nib. Surely, nib material aside; Bock made nibs must be fairly similar to each other?! That is unless of course, that Bock provide some kind of consulting process in which the pen maker brings what they want, which Bock then go on to manufacture. Any thoughts or insights?

    Pelikan Ef Nibs

I read on an old forum here that Pelikan EF nibs cab be a little scratchy just out of the box. Is that still the case?
  6. Not sure if this is the best place for this. Just a quick nod in this direction http://www.iampeth.com/videos.php The video in question is the Adjusting The Flange on Oblique Pen Holder. I'm actually yet to try this as i don't have a holder with a brass flange, but i'm convinced this is the cure to the scratchiness i've been experiencing. The theory is to lower the angle of the nib to the paper so it's less vertical and more horizontal. As these holders are apparently unavailable in the Uk, i'm going to try turning my own and making a flange out of sheet brass. See you over in the making and turning section. Ys Charlie Swaffer

    Swapping Nibs?

Hello all! I'm thinking about getting a Sheaffer Friends of Winter pen, since I found one on sale. However, the pen on sale doesn't have my currently-preferred nib size. I'm open to trying the current nib out, but if I don't like it is there some way to swap nibs in Sheaffer pens? Also, does anyone have experience with the Friends of Winter series to say how smoothly they write, compared to say a Pilot 78G? I've found some reviews for the Sheaffer 100, which seems to be similar to the Friends of Winter series but don't know if they're exactly the same.
  9. Hi FPN'ers, While browsing through various posts and writeups I noticed people referring to nibs using numbers like #5, #6, etc. I would love if someone could shed a little light on the reason, use and meaning of this numbering. Thanks in advance, Nigel
  10. So recently I was pen browsing, and I came across a couple of hooded nibs. I was wondering, what is the point (no pun intended) of these? What is the benefit of it, what are the drawbacks? And why did they start being used? Thank you!
  11. Hey everyone, so I'm pretty new to fountain pens (first one yay!), and I was wondering, how often should I replace my nib? I have a Lamy Safari XF nib, and recently (IE yesterday) a jerk 'borrowed' it, and pressed down so hard on the paper that he left ink splotches, and now it writes funny. I think the line is wider, which negates the whole XF nib thing, and I was thinking about replacing it, but that's fifteen dollars I'm loathe to spend. I really need a thin line for my handwriting to approach legibility, though. Any advice?
  12. Hey everybody! I'm a new fountain pen user, and I was wondering what are some good journals for me to use? It will be used as a diary, and I travel a lot. Specifically, I will be spending two months in China in the near future (yay!), and need a good journal for my Lamy Safari XF. I typically either use Diamine Sherwood or Waterman Black, if that helps at all. I'm looking for something not too expensive, though I am willing to spend up to 25$. I prefer something that looks nice but not girly, is medium sized, and maybe has a hardcover? Also, I tend to fold the cover back, and my last journal fell apart because of this, so does anyone know of any ones with really strong bindings, because it may be abused a tad. Finally (this is a lot, I know, but bear with me), any travelling tips? I'll have one suitcase and one carry on, so I really need to know how to properly store this stuff. Can I write on the plane with my Lamy and not have to worry about it exploding? Should I use a ballpoint (cringe) just for the ride? Thank you so much! PS I already love this website.
  13. The fountain pen I have was handmade by one of my brother's teachers and now I want a calligraphy nib and I need some replacement inks. The problem is, I can't remember what website she uses to get the nibs and inks. Here's a photo of the nib and you can see the threads where the pen part attaches? This is my first fountain pen and I just want to be able to do calligraphy with it. Thanks, April

    Eclipse Pen, Tipping Missing

Hello everyone. I now know the true meaning of flexy nibs thanks to this beautiful Eclipse ring top pen. However, I now know the meaning of bad luck on eBay thanks to the pen's gorgeously flexy but untipped nib. http://24.media.tumblr.com/7379ff6eef17c5b7ae96ac990633ed4e/tumblr_mociyhwUjm1r4c920o3_1280.jpg http://24.media.tumblr.com/a4605b243a47392841cdd3ea2dfd8cb0/tumblr_mocpxyGdb41r4c920o1_500.jpg http://25.media.tumblr.com/78bc6250026b622322355161a21bbdb5/tumblr_mociyhwUjm1r4c920o2_1280.jpg Anyone know where I can find a flexy #2 nib for a price less than $30? (I hope that didn't sound like a joke!)
  15. I have a Summit s160 with a 14k nib that writes superbly. It always starts first time, never skips, has a lovely sound and tactile feedback from the paper and writes with what I would describe as a mediumto fine italic/stubbish line. Neither nib nor feed has anything to describe the nib other than "Summit 14k Gold". My questions are: Has this nib been reground or did Summit produce a stock nib fitting this description? Are Summit nibs easily interchangeable? The latter question because the pen is in good condition except for the fact that the 'bung' is missing from the end of the barrel which makes me wary of carrying it around for fear of any stray ink sliding down the barrel and into my jacket pocket. If nibs can be easily swapped I could look out for another Summit and swap nibs. Any information would be most gratefully received.

    Birds On My Blog

I just wanted to share a couple of photos I took for my blog http://marginalscape.tumblr.com/ called "Marginalia." As I've probably mentioned before, I'm an architectural historian. Lately I've been working on a few community-based projects in public history here in my hometown of Paterson, NJ. The home of the first planned industrial community in the USA. So the background I used is an 1890 illustrated history that is a wonderful visual reference and also a great place in which to get lost dreamily.
