Hey guys. I'm new to fountain pens, and I don't know who else has the problem of people ALWAYS wanting to borrow your pens. This one guy even pretty much took it right out of my hands to write down his number (jerk), and ended up leaving ink splotches all over the paper, he pressed down so hard. Ugh. Do you think this damaged the nib (Lamy Safari EF)? It writes kinda funny now; it just feels different than before, and I think the lines are thicker, which negates the EF nib bit. I might even get a new one, which is a shame because I've only had this one for about three months, even though I've used it loads. Do they typically last longer? Also, my friends are always curious about it, because nobody else really uses them, and want to borrow it. How do you all deal with this? Thanks bunches!

What kind of service do Bock provide? It seems like so many pen makers use Bock nibs, yet so many reviews also comment of the various properties of company specific features like the "conway stewart", or "Visconti" feel of a nib. Surely, nib material aside; Bock made nibs must be fairly similar to each other?! That is unless of course, that Bock provide some kind of consulting process in which the pen maker brings what they want, which Bock then go on to manufacture. Any thoughts or insights?

Hey everybody Looking to buy my first brand new pen A friend has a Lamy Studio which seems to be a really good pen Did some research and apparently it is one of the best pens for that price My questions is, what are the differences between the various finishes? I know the standard one is the cheapest, then the palladium then the platinum Their price do vary substantially but apart from the finish, are there real differentiations at all? I wouldn't want to pay an extra $200 for the platinum one which is what I'm looking to if the writing experience is the same as the $150 base model Looking forward to your opinions Thanks Keefe

Pen Writes Only After I Force Ink Via Converter, Random Blobs While Writing Or Stops Entirely
WhatsNewSisyphus posted a topic in Repair Q&A
I have a pen at hand, nemosine singularity with a stub nib (I think this is a production error and xfountainpens have been more than wonderful in helping me get a replacement, but I'd like to take it as a learning opportunity) problems: If I push the feed all the way down until it has no more to go, and twist the converter until ink flows into the section, the pen will write for a while, and in random intervals drop really big blobs of ink on the page, sometimes followed by a dry spell where the pen stops writing entirely. If I adjust the feed to be more forward, just clearing the sides of the tines so that it is not visible from the top-side of the pen, the pen will write super smoothly after I force some ink down from the converter, but it will stop and not write again at all until I force more ink. observations: I do not see any ink filling the combs of the feed in either situation, but there a pool of ink can be seen between the feed and the nib in situation 1 The nib itself, if you look at it from the tip as if you are going to poke your eye out, the tines are tilted invards, so instead of being a h ( τ ) , it is more of a ( ϒ ) *SUPERBLY EXAGGERATED* what I tried: Brushing the feed and the nib, along with the converter with mild dishwashing detergent Reseating everything about a million times Different Inks Very tight / Very loose nib clearance from feed Tight/Barely touching tine adjustments flossing the tines flossing the feed channel Thanks a bunch. -
Hi everyone, This is my first post to FPN and I just have a quick question.... I just bought an Estie Dollar Pen H of Peyton Street which came with a 9550 nib which everyone says is Extra Fine and that is fine. I was looking at nibs and saw that the 9555 is also EF but specifically for Gregg shorthand; I was wondering what specifically was different between these two nibs. Thanks Teddy

I have a Pelikan M600 I bought new in late 2011. the nib is stamped with "14C 585": http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8401/8708408764_8772cdcb6e_b.jpgPelikan M600 by astrophoenix, on Flickr so I'm thinking it's a 14-karat gold nib. yet on the web, I'm seeing pelikan m600s for sale where the description says 18k nibs. have they changed the nibs recently?

This is the clear section with feed from a cheap knock off of the Phileas: The very small black circle in the center of the section is the only part of the feed that is accesible from the rear. The rest, the clear plastic, is all immovable, breakable section. This is the L'Etalon nib and feed. The Phileas nib/feed is the cheap knock off of the L'Etalon and is identical in shape. The tail on the feed is what projects through the tube in the section. This is the rear of the L'Et section without the feed. Everything is fixed, The tail fits in the vacant tube in the center. This is the back of a Preface, no feed. This is the rear of the Preface sect, feed in place. Only the end of the feed tail, inside the fixed tube, is accesible. This is the Man 100/200/Gent style. They have an extra piece in the nib holder. There is an extra, broken, nib holder in this picture to show the threads. This nib holder is threaded into the section with fine plastic threads. This nib holder has the small tube for the feed tail. Using a knock out on these could take out all three pieces. Excuse me for the knock off statements earlier. Someone called Kulturs a cheap knock off of the Phileas and some of my favorite pens felt insulted.

Hello, I have a question. I have a Parker Frontier and I'd like to swap a nib. Recently I saw an interesting ad, goulet pen co. has made their own nibs(#6 nib). The question is does GP nibs fit into Parker frontier?

Hey, so I'm going to get a VP XF soon, and I know that the nib on that one is particularly fine, and as such it can be scratchy (sometimes). I've heard that Richard Binder 'Binderizes' the nibs for free, but honestly, I would prefer to make such an expensive purchase from my local brick and mortar store. It's my first expensive pen, and I want to make sure that I like the feel of it. Is the nib difference that big? I'm buying it for the super fine nib, so if it's worth it at all I'll probably get it from R.B., but how much does it help? Does anyone have any experience with a super fine nib that was binderized? Thank you!

Hello all, A while back I purchased a NOS M100 (the white and black version). It had an M nib, but was EXTREMELY broad so I quickly sold it. I normally use EF pens and have started getting into flex pens just a bit for some special writing (they can't ALL be daily writers, right? ). Anyway... I recently purchased an M205 in black and chrome and I absolutely LOVE everything about the pen (size, weight, color, etc.), but the nib is driving me CRAZY. It's VERY broad. The Pelikan EF is significantly broader than any of my other EF nibs (I've included a photo comparing it to a Lamy, Edison and TWSBI because they are all steel nibs and are all German, like the Pelikan) and is actually more similar to my wife's Lamy Broad nibs. Is it normal for Pelikan nibs to be this much more broad than their other German counterparts? It also exhibits a surprising amount of flex with just slight pressure (which is where the broad line is coming from, I think). I'm wondering if I should just part with it and get something else or if I should maybe send it to a nibmeister and see if I can't get it ground to an actual EF. Since I don't have other Pelikans to compare it to, I'd love your input here. If this doesn't seem to be normal, then I may contact Pelikan and see what they suggest (I've heard they have great customer service so I'm hoping maybe I can just swap the nib or something). Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer. I want to love this pen, but if it's going to write this broad, I don't think I'll be able to make a spot for it in the case. Best, Matthew http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7398/9584235179_ac29b5d37d_h.jpg

Hello all! I recently acquired a Bossert & Erhard fountain pen with a bent nib. I was looking to replace it but I haven't been able to find them for sale nor any hints on how they are supposed to come appart to be replaced. The pen is caked with ink so I would like to disassemble it to clean it up too. I have been to the http://www.bossert-erhard.com/ website (although it's very antiquated), and sent them an email, but I figured I would ask here too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello all! I'm thinking about getting a Sheaffer Friends of Winter pen, since I found one on sale. However, the pen on sale doesn't have my currently-preferred nib size. I'm open to trying the current nib out, but if I don't like it is there some way to swap nibs in Sheaffer pens? Also, does anyone have experience with the Friends of Winter series to say how smoothly they write, compared to say a Pilot 78G? I've found some reviews for the Sheaffer 100, which seems to be similar to the Friends of Winter series but don't know if they're exactly the same.

Does anyone have experience with Lamy Safari M nib and ABC nib? ABC has only one size of nib -- medium. So far it looks different from the Safari M nib, but is interchangeable with Safari. Any difference?Which is superior?

Behold The (Drum Roll Please!)...tws... Pula 580
pen_addict posted a topic in Fountain & Dip Pens - First Stop
Hello all, I've been loitering around FPN for a while but this will be my first attempt at making a "real" post! After much debate about where to stick this, I decided that this was a better fit than either the TWSBI or stipula forums... (the pictures aren't great but hey that's what i get for using a tablet to take 'em!) Anyway, as the story goes, a couple of weeks ago I was able to get my hands on a TWSBI 580 thanks to fellow FPN-ner dcrosier76... The 580 was a nice surprise; a pretty hefty pen that feels nice and solidly built; for comparison, it is close in size to the Pelikan M800 which you can see in the initial pictures here. The body is well balanced and perfect unposted but posted becomes an little awkward due to the extra length.. not a problem for me since I generally don't use my pens posted... Pelikan M800 and TWSBI 580 The TWSBI 580 came with a medium nib and the first thing I did was load up my brand new bottle of Iro. yama-budo to take it for a test drive... imagine my disappointment to find the pen writing more like a broad nib and just WET... for someone who prefers a fine japanese nib generally, this was a big issue... So, going along with the number of mods and nib exchanges posted by many before me, I went in search of a possible spare nib that would fit... the noodler's flex seemed too small, the ahab/konrad too big, a spare arnold gold nib too big, an old vintage mallat nib with the wrong curvature... and so on until I'd just about given up.. Then just as I was about to call it quits, I saw a stipula nib that was just sitting around due to a cracked collar... well, I'd tried everything else so why not the little stipula steel nib as well figuring it was probably just a tad too small... low and behold, not only did the nib fit pretty well but the pen now writes like a dream! With that I present to you the TWS-PULA 580-1... the arrows on the last picture kind of point out where the size difference between the nib and feed is pretty clear... TWSBI 580 pen with Iro. yama-budo Stipula steel nib Behold the TWS-PULA! TWSBI M nib compared to the Stipula nib Stipula nib and TWSBI feed -
I'm a big fan of tuckies, and recently came across this beautiful cap and body in an ebay lot. I believe it is an early tuckaway model without a cap clip. I have been thinking about trying my hand at vacuum-fil repair, and I like what's left of this pen enough to give it a shot. I'm holding up on this adventure until I can secure the right nib for it. was the nib in this pen a triumph or open nib, and does the donor pen have to be precisely the same mode? what are my chances of ever finding a supplier for this nib?

Hi FPN'ers, While browsing through various posts and writeups I noticed people referring to nibs using numbers like #5, #6, etc. I would love if someone could shed a little light on the reason, use and meaning of this numbering. Thanks in advance, Nigel

Hello! I'm a self-taught calligrapher from Russia and I specialize in dipping nibs. However, I want to find a pen for everyday usage (I'm a student and have to write a lot). I need your help as we don't have a large selection of fountain pens in Russia (only Parker and Waterman), so I cannot try other pens. I want a pen with flexible (or semi-flex) nib (something very near to copperplate) that is cheaper then 50$. Also it would be better if a pen would be made of metall, but this is not obligatory. Thanks for your help. PS Now I'm trying to modificate a cheap parker by changing standard nib with the dip one, but it is much more scratchy, then a good pen should be)

Recently bought an Ahab, loved it. Then I dropped it, nib tines were misaligned and I bent them back into shape as well as I can, and the tip is tilted in an annoying way. The tines on my nib refuse to realign completely, meaning the pen is a bit scratcher than I'd like, so I'll need a replacement nib. I need a noodlers nib to replace it, anyone know where I can get one? I can't get any photos, so sorry.

So recently I was pen browsing, and I came across a couple of hooded nibs. I was wondering, what is the point (no pun intended) of these? What is the benefit of it, what are the drawbacks? And why did they start being used? Thank you!

Hey everyone, so I'm pretty new to fountain pens (first one yay!), and I was wondering, how often should I replace my nib? I have a Lamy Safari XF nib, and recently (IE yesterday) a jerk 'borrowed' it, and pressed down so hard on the paper that he left ink splotches, and now it writes funny. I think the line is wider, which negates the whole XF nib thing, and I was thinking about replacing it, but that's fifteen dollars I'm loathe to spend. I really need a thin line for my handwriting to approach legibility, though. Any advice?

What Pen Is This And What About Its Filler?
Historynut posted a topic in Fountain & Dip Pens - First Stop
I have a Mont Blanc knock off - at least I think it is - that I need new piston fillers for. The pen has no writing on it at all except on the nib; "Iridium Point Germany." It used to have the squeeze bag filler that never worked well at all. Some time ago I found a piston filler with the words "Mont Blanc Germany" engraved on the chrome end holding the screw stem. It fits perfectly! I would like to find more of them since this one doesn't fill completely. Can anyone help? Thanks. -
Hi All Been a member for a while but this is my first post here. By chance I found this pen on ebay. I saw there is nib plating loss even though the nib was engraved "585". I always think engraving "585" means solid 14K gold instead of "14K gold plated". Can anyone please correct me if I am wrong? Thank you. Jeffrey

I am helping an elderly friend liquidate some old pen sets she has inherited. One is a Sheaffer ballpoint & fountain pen set (see pics). I have been online for two days trying to identify the pens. I have had zero luck in finding a pen with this nib. The box, the paper, the pens all have Sheaffer and/or the old stylized "S" logo. I don't want to misrepresent this item so I was excited when I came across this site. HELP! Any info you can provide to identify this set would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it is not a real fountain pen? Maybe it is not a real Sheaffer? Thanks!

I have an M150 that I've had for a few years that has always written rather wet. I stopped caring about that for a while after I got a nice Esterbrook, but that pen will be going in for repair soon and I want to get the Pelikan working the way I want. So, would someone please point out some resource for manipulating Pelikan nibs in particular? I think this one needs to have its feed set back a little more.
