    Hello From London!

Hello! My name is Michael, I'm an amateur calligrapher who is interested in scripts and writing systems that are non-Roman, particular Arabic, Japanese, Tifinagh, Syriac and Manchu. I work as the Turkish curator at the British Library, and am very interested in meeting others from around the world who are interested in non-Roman calligraphic arts, especially modern typographies. I've created a website with my work in both ink and clay. Have a look if you're interest! www.adventuresinscript.com I look forward to talking and collaborating with everyone, and learning a lot about calligraphy from you! Best, Michael

    Hi From Melbourne, Au

Hi from Melbourne, My name is Gary. I'm a 49 y.o. physicist and engineer living in Melbourne and started getting interested in fountain pens around a year ago. The interest was triggered by a confluence of a podcaster mentioning his preference for fountain pens, and a quest for the colour of a particular cheap gel pen I knew would be gone once that pen was used up. The quest luckily didn't take too long before I discovered the exact colour in Rohrer & Klingner Solferino. I dabble in trying to improve my handwriting and my colour tastes have widened from the magenta. I have benefited from the helpful information from members of this site so it was finally time to join and hopefully contribute to some of the discussions here.

    Vintage Flex Hunting

Hey guys! I'm particularly new to this world of fountain pens. I just want to ask some of you especially the experts if i have a good percentage of finding vintage pens on antique shops here in Manila. I was hoping to at least find a Parker Vacumatic.
  4. I just received a Parker soft grip that I ordered from eBay. I have found this pen to be a hard starter. It came with one parker cartridge. I am thinking of going to a converter on it, but I am unsure of putting more money in a pen that, to me, is very light and not a great writer. I want to try some Noodler's or J. Herbin ink, so I know a converter would allow that; but I am wondering if I would be better served with maybe a Lamy Safari or some such to launch my exploration in. I intend to grab a Platinum Preppy and convert it to an eyedropper pen, but I want to get something decent to write with on a daily basis. Any recommendations would be very welcome!!!!!! I have just moved over to fountain pens from ballpoints. I currently carry a Montblanc ballpoint in Bordeaux. I love the weight and feel of the Montblanc, and would like to find something of comparable heft to learn writing with fountain pens.

    Cs Help

Hi, So I was looking for a nice fountain pen after my TWSBI diamond got nicked and after about five minutes of reading thread on here, I went insane and instead of buying a brand new pen than can be replaced and repaired etc, I bought a vintage COnway Stewart 475 from 1938... I was sensible enough to get one that has been serviced and is in perfect working order but... What do I do now?! Can I use any ink?! I normally use Pilot Iroshizuku ink... Can I still use it or should I buy some new? And have a made a mistake by being such a newbie buying an old fashioned pen?

    Alo-Hola

Aloha, Just moved to Albuquerque. New job has me writing more. I found a cheap zebra FP and it has frustrated me, but opened the door to a whole new world. I am falling in love and sharing it with the family. Just ordered a couple of Pilot Kakunos for the kids to use. I am not sure where I should start? I don't really need flash and bling at work, but smooth consistency. I want some class like a Waterman expert... running off to grab a burrito, peace, Olomana
  7. Hi All, I have just started getting into fountain pens again and love watching some of the reviews online. My standard day to day pen is a Cross Century II with a medium nib which writes like a dream and from my understanding is quite wet. I recently decided to purchase a Visconti Opera Typhoon as this seemed to be quite a few peoples grail pen. However, after using it, I feel slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong the build quality is great however the medium nib compared to my Cross seems a little scratchy and more on the fine side. Has anyone used a Cross medium nib pen that would have alternative recommendations with the same sort of nib and writing style? Best regards, Craig

New To Fountain Pens And Loving Them

Hey all, I'm a high schooler from Berkeley, California who just started using fountain pens and is quickly becoming obsessed. My handwriting isn't quite good enough to deserve them, but I'm working on it.
  10. Hi guys , I have been lurking on this forum for some weeks now after recently rekindling my interest in fountain pens. I brought few pens : Lamy safari(medium nib), Lamy vista (fine), Pilot ( metropolitan,crocodile-fine nib) and a fine nib pen from the deccan pen shop hyderabad. Inks that i have :- Lamy blue ink, Waterman violet ink , shaeffer blue ink and bril : black and green . I have few questions that i hope you all might help me with:- 1. I feel that the pilot fine nib feels very dry when writing with lamy blue ink but its good with shaeffer blue ink . So am i right in thinking that i should use WET inks with fine nibs and dry ink with medium nib ??? 2.Which brand(indian or otherwise) has the best inks ? both dry and wet . I am brought a Bril black ink but its feathers a lot . 3. Best fountain pens or nibs for left handed individuals and from where can i buy different types of nibs. i am looking for extra fine lamy nib. 4.Are there fountain pen friendly notebooks by indian manufacturers? Moleskine and rest are very costly. 5.Is there a blue colour ink that is between turquoise blue and blue ? 6.Ink and pen recommendations .( nothing too costly ) Thanks a lot .

    Hello From Southern California!

Hello! Craig here from Orange County California! I am extremely new to the world of fountain pens but I found it in a really cool way. When I was young, I had a family friend who gave me unique Christmas and birthday gifts. I received a LeBoeuf pencil one year and the next was a sterling silver dip pen. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2008 from a long battle with lung cancer. He was a world traveler, and hailed originally from Portugal. Now 8 years later we are still finding things he collected. Digging around in an old box, I pulled out 3 pens. A green Celluloid Pelikan 400 from the 50s, an all stainless French made Waterman, and a mid-70s Sheaffer. This was on July 25th. Now just a few weeks later, I have a TWSBI Mini, a Noodler's Konrad, a Vintage Conklin Glider, and have just picked up a Waterman's 52 1/2 V! I feel like I am just getting started and at 28 years old, I have tons more collecting to do! I look forward to learning as much as I can from this community! Attached is all of my pens/pencils. The 1935 Mickey Mouse pencil was also in that box! Hope everyone has a great August! Cheers! -Craig

    Hello From Jakarta!

Hi! I'm a student from Jakarta, Indonesia I love pens and any kind of stationary, for that matter. I like fountain pens, and do own and use many of them, but what I'm really into are drafting stationaries (pencils, technicals pens, and such) and other stuff of a technical nature. I just love admiring the technical looks and straight lines of the pens and pecils like the Rotring 600. Aside from pens and pencils, I like cutters too, I wonder if there is a site like this too for that? Unfortunately, Indonesia is not really a good country for this hobby. Available brands of fountain pens are very limited and it gets worse when it comes to drafting pencils... And the stuff that's available in the general stationary stores are mostly quite expensive ones, which I can't really afford. I'm grateful, though, that now, starting this year, I can see the Rotring 600s and 800s with my own eyes in the bookstores. I looks like there's hope for me after all! It's worth noting that here the fountain pen is a rather unusual thing to write with. You see a few them in bookstores, but to see someone actually writing with it is very rare. We're not taught to use them is schools, like some other countries, from what I've read.
  13. This forum was the first one I turned to, when I decided to buy my first Montblanc 149 - this week - new from a Boutique. Need your advice on what to expect in the Box, shop and can I use the pen for my daily usage, etc. I have always loved Fountain pens, and still the own the Sheaffer Sagaris Gold and Sagaris black barrel. Apart from that have used a variety of fountain pens from Parker, Jinhao and Camlin. I came back again and again to the Sagaris black as I simply loved the Nib and writing. 1) Is the 149 similar to that or is it better and smoother to write (I prefer a broader, smoother nib) 2) Does the 149 come with any other ink other than Black? I prefer Blue-Black, but... 3) What kind of paper is best for it? I use school notebook paper to the high-quality 80 GSM. What should I expect in the Box? and how do validate the pen they have sold me is genuine? Thanks in advance.
  14. Hi all! I've been lurking here off and on for a year or two, but never really posted, just lurked. But as I've gotten further into the rabbit hole of the hobby, I've decided to try and become a little more active. I became a monthly donor, and now I've got to engage more. Hence here. My name is Mikeal. I'm from Lubbock, TX, though I spent most of my life in Las Vegas, NV. Currently I live in Spokane Valley, WA. Though I've had a passing interest in pens since high school. But about two years ago I got into fountain pens, largely through some folks on Badger and Blade. I started with a couple Pilot Metropolitans. That grew into a wider collection with a Pelikan m205, Pilot Custom 74, Platinum 3776, and a couple less expensive Safaris, etc on the edges. These past few months, the bug has gotten a bad bite on me. I bought my first $100+ pen, a maki-e Sailor, for my wife, themed after a story she loves. And now I've gone past that, and am awaiting delivery of a Sailor 1911 Large from Engeika. I'm slowly falling into the ink well, as well. My current favorites are Kon Peki, and Lamy Dark Lilac. (How I wish more of the Lilac was available. I even live in Lilac City.) Anyway, there is a little about me. Hopefully you will see me around the board, soaking up all ya'lls experience like a paper towel blotting some iron gall, or a field notes soaking up and feathering all my ink. Thanks. And if you have a recommendation on an ink just like the Lamy Lilac I love that is still available, let me know.

    Hello From Canada!

Hi all! I have been browsing FPN for quite a while before I finally made an account today. I'm from Canada and have been interested in fountain pens ever since seeing my doctor use one when I was a wee child. I finally decided to jump right into it a few years ago and got a TWSBI Diamond 580 1.1 mm stub to improve my handwriting. The addiction started soon after that as I started exploring different nib types and ink. I love blue and green spectrum inks! As well, I have had a recent obsession with iron gall and document inks. ESSRI in a Lamy 2000 (medium) has become my mainstay EDC pen/ink combo at this point. Anyways I figure this is a good place to start things off and thanks for the (hopefully not too boring) read through! Best, sleepy

Hi everyone, Just a quick intro from Bermie, short for Bermuda. i have always loved writing instruments and beautiful paper...so I have started collecting fountain pens ...all very new to me. Look forward to learning more about makers and repair.
  17. Hello everyone! I have never used forums before but after quietly creeping posts here on FPN, I figured I should make an account and join in on the fun. I am looking forward to meeting new people whom I can talk to about fountain pens, because most of my friends aren't into pens If anyone from the Edmonton Fountain Pen Club is reading this, please let me know when the next meetup is; I would love to join you! I am currently studying engineering at the University of Alberta and I started using fountain pens about a month ago. Hiya! Newbie Here!

Hi! My name is Ri and I'm a newbie to fountain pens for the most part. I've been lurking on the interwebs learning about fountain pens for a while now and I finally took the plunge a year ago and purchased my first pen - a Pilot Metropolitan in black with a medium nib. In my entire, very small collection, it's still my favourite to use. I own five fountain pens - the aforementioned Pilot Metropolitan, a Pilot 78G in Burgundy with an M nib, a Lamy Safari Dark Lilac in EF, a Parker 51 and a TWSBI Diamond 580 with an M nib. I look forward to slowly adding more pens to my collection and learning more about pens in general!

I have lurked and read this message board for a while. I think this board is one of the most friendly and helpful on the web. So I have taken the plunge and joined. I am not a knowledgeable collector, more of a user really. As for ink, Corn Poppy Red - Mont Blanc, Lamy Turquoise and Green, Diamine Lavender, QuinksWashable Blue (thats probably not cool ) but if I had to pick one Platinum Blue-Black cartridges (thats probably not cool either ). 21. Looking for a student, newbie, adventurer in the fountain pen world that would love to try this eyedropper. As you will see, it was used with a prple ink and I couldn't get the stain out of the cap and around the clip, but I am sure that with the proper solution you may be able to clean it properly. All other parts have been cleaned thoroughly. I will someone that: 1-lives in the mainland USA 2- can pay for shipping ($6.75) through PayPal I may decide promptly since I just want to give it away. As a matter of thanks for previous PIFs, i am looking for the pens I no longer use to give away. It's difficult, but here is one. It has its tricks and was fun to use , but it is not a keeper for me. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/anangeli/PENS/INDIAN/IMG_0270_zpsgzngze50.jpg
  22. Hi from the frozen tundra! (Except 3 months a year when you'd swear it was Africa!) I'm a 35 year old married mother of a teenager and wife to a grown man who acts like it sometimes. I have 3 major goals in life. I also have multiple sclerosis, which screws up goals 1 and 2 but could help with goals 3. I want to be a midwife and I want to learn to write beautifully. Those 2 the MS screw up. I also desperately want a cat but my apartment won't let me.. but because of depression, anxiety and muscle spasms a cat can, due to it's petting, grooming, daily activities and mood enhancing properties can be considered an emotional therapy animal that my landlord would have to let me have, provided I have proper documentation. More to come maybe..

    Hello From Ohio

Hey all, my name is Nate and I'm an amateur fountain pen enthusiast, and calligrapher. I'm still very new to everything and would love your help getting further into the art. I have a full set of Pilot parallel pens that I love, and a hand made wooden fountain pen that a friend made for me as a gift, as well as a set of dip nibs. One of my biggest questions is how or if I can change the nib on my fountain pen? I know nothing of the brand or size as it was made as a gift. I have a bottle of Parker Quink that my friend gave me with my pen and was wondering if it will work in my parallel pens or will it clog the receiver, if I can't use it what ink would you suggest? (or more so what ink should I avoid on a functional level, since ink is such a personal preference)
  25. Hello there! My name is Raymond, and I've been in to fountain pens for around 4-5 years now. Along those years, I've only amassed a small, humble collection of just five fountain pens and four bottles of ink. I apologize greatly for the terrible picture quality, as I only have a webcam to take pictures with. The pens here are (from left to right): Jinhao X450 in red/black with a Medium nibPilot Metropolitan in Black/Plain, with a Medium (Western fine) nibTWSBI Eco Black with a Fine nibPlatinum Preppy 03 with a Fine (Little thinner than Western extra fine) nib, eyedropper conversion. Finally, my Cross Bailey in Black with a Medium nib. I have four bottles of ink here to go with them. From left to right: Diamine Oxblood, Noodler's General of the Armies, Pilot Namiki Black, and Waterman Inspired Blue. I'm glad to join you all!
