    High Five From Toronto

Hi Everyone! I just got started into the pen world late last year. I'm a 29 year old from Toronto Canada who picked up my first fountain pen, a Kaweco Sport, and it snowballed into 7-8 more pens thereafter. I'm actually going to stop by the store after work to pick up a Konrad Brush Pen and a J Herbin Gris Nuage My pursuit is to improve my handwriting skills and I'm currently learning Spencerian, and the Palmer Method of handwriting... I guess Palmer is the derivative of Spencerian, so they go hand in hand. I'm having a lot of fun with this new and addicting hobby... writing letters, testing inks and collecting pens (which I need to practice restraint if I don't want to go broke, LOL). Have a good one everyone! And happy inking - Inkception

Hi! I've lurked for a little bit and finally decided to take the plunge. My fountain pen obsession began at school when we had to learn to write using a fountain pen. I'm guessing this isn't done anymore, but at the time we learnt how to print with a pencil and then joined up writing with a fountain pen. At the time I used a an oversize, marbled something or other that had a sac with a metal frame around it. You squeezed the metal frame to suck up the ink. I loved it, but sadly it is lost in the mists of time. Since then I have always owned a fountain pen of one type or another - some of them have stayed with me and some have been lost or broken. For the past couple of years I have picked up a few pens online and at various auctions/sales etc. Half the time I haven't a clue what I'm buying; it's just what I like the look and feel of. A lot of what I have I don't know what it is, but that may change here! Currently I have 14 fountain pens in my collection - small, but I only buy what I'm really drawn to. They are: A Parker Prelude (which I think I bought in the mid 90's) A very cheap plastic Parker (no idea of model) that I've had since the early 80's and never really worked very well. An Eversharp (Oxford?) lever filler, made in England with a flex nib A teeny weeny Peter Pan A Conway Stewart from the 50's, lever filler A slightly odd looking Scout lever filler A Parker black and pearl button filler A Netunno Shark A Marxton Eclipse An E.Faber lever filler A Wearever lever filler with a horrible nib Two ebay specials with wood fittings, but they write! An unknown lever filler with a kind of camo marble effect. And that's it!

Hello everyone, I have a passion for fountain pens and I've become a missionary for their use, while I model their use and interact with my students every day. I even provide them with some of my pens to wrtie with while they are in my class. I am so excited about all the new things I can learn by becoming a participant here. Warm Regards Blackhawk

    Hello From New Hampshire!

Greetings FPN members! I'm relatively new to the fountain pen community but having just gotten started, I thought it would be great to join a place like here to learn more. I'm from the wonderful state of NH and currently a sophomore attending college in central Ohio. I just got introduced to fountain pens when a friend got me a Lamy Safari M nib and I've been hooked to learning to use fountain pens day to day. I don't have much of a collection of pens yet since I can't really afford much (yay college student life) and am still using cartridges for now but I hope I can expand to a converter and other pens sometime soon. I look forward to learning from you all!

    Hello From Maryland

I have just recently became interested in fountain pens after using ball points all of my life. Stopped by this great site and had to join. I only have just started and am a complete beginner. Two pens so far and some ink cartridges to sample.

    Hello From Maryland!

Hello Everyone! My friend told me about this site and now I'm hooked! Figured instead of lurking I'd just make an account. I've been using fountain pens for about three years now, mostly for basic writing and fancy lettering purposes. I don't have the money for very fancy fountain pens, but I have some AWESOME friends that let me borrow theirs! My favorite everyday pen is Kaweco Classic Sport for the compact design and the fact that it's not meltdown-worthy if I misplace it. I also like the lack of a clip so it doesn't scratch my phone when thrown in my purse. I tend to like fine nibs over thicker ones, and blue or brown inks over black. I go through a lot of sketchbooks/notebooks each year and I definitely think a fine paper can make even the cheapest pen look ten times better! So I guess you can say I'm a bit of a paper/notebook snob. I also have a super-soft spot for well-designed accessories like pen pouches, leather notebook covers/cases, notebook bands with pen slots, etc. I follow a lot of pen blogs, but I come here almost exclusively before I buy a pen for trusted reviews. Can't wait to add to the conversations and start learning a whole lot more! –Tori

    Hi From Hungary

Hi everyone, I have been lurking here for a while - just to learn as much as possible. My name is György, from Hungary. By the time of day I work in the second (or third) largest city in the ENE part of the country. By the 'light of night', I live in a small village, some 20 km off. Both places and times I write quite a lot. I learned to write with FPs - but I not 'collector' - they just happen to start piling up. In a pen I prefer simple design and innovative technological solutions as well as ease of maintenance; In nibs I tend to use the finer widths, for most of bulk writing I am OK with smooth nails; I usually write cursive (in an ugly longhand ~ business hand), so I have a predilection for stubs and some flex for flair. My interest is more in writing - not only with FPs, but dip pens, occasionally pencils, graphite sticks, reed pens, metalpoints, even with knives - the only exception where I failed terribly is brush writing and ballpoints. This is a great forum with an incredible hoard of accumulated rich knowledge, very nice and helpful people and sizzling with life. Something I'd like to be part of very much.

Hello all, My name is Greg Scott and live just north of Dallas in Denton, Tx. I have been collecting/learning to repair/selling vintage fountain pens for around 10 years with a couple of years off for other stuff. I have gotten back into the hobby and looking forward to the vast information I hope to find on this site. My most recent restore was a 1947 Parker 51, Blue Diamond Vacumatic with a Lusterloy stacked coin cap, which I was able to get working again after a few parts purchases on eBay and a diaphram. I love this pen. I started with Estie's and have quite a few that I use and a few that will hopefully find new homes. On the to-do list are a few Parker Vacs that need to be restored. I'm still in the proccess of acquiring all the tools I need but I've been called a tool maker so I usually can come up with something that works. I also enjoy doing woodworking with hand tools. Also a long time journal writer. I'm kind of an anachronist. That's enough for now. Looking forward to meeting some of you on the board through the forums. And specially those I've watched your videos and have purchased from online. Thanks, Greg gscott92

    Ink Recommendations On Student Budget

I'm new to fountain pens. I will be getting a Pilot Metropolitan soon, so I will be using the converter more than cartridges. I need relatively inexpensive ink, something black or blue, and something that won't feather. Any thoughts?
  10. Finally coming out of the shadows after several months of [quite satisfying and informative] lurking. I rekindled my love of fountain pens around a year ago, ironically after digging out my collection with the intention of selling some of it off, since I hadn't paid it much attention for a while. Well, while looking through some listings on ebay to determine what I might be able to get for some my pens, I ended up placing a bid instead. Oops. While I've always loved pens, and frequently had ink-stained fingers even in elementary school from cheap fountain pens, the Matte Black Namiki VP I bought in 1995 or 1996 and used throughout college really sealed the deal. Sadly, it disappeared along the rest of the contents of a shoulder bag left in a bar some time ago. So anyway, now I'm back into actively (and essentially exclusively) writing with fountain pens, and, rather than pairing it down, have added a bit to my arsenal since rediscovering it. The bulk of my tiny collection is still older-style VPs, but I also have a couple of TWSBIs that I am very impressed by, as well as a smattering of LAMY Safaris/Vistas and Kaweco Sports, which I think, for the price, are really superb (though there is the occasional bad apple), and a few other odds and ends. Generally speaking, I like tinkering with things, so I was incapable of resisting Richard Binder's nib-smoothing kit (with cheap practice pens) and I'm sure I have many costly (but hopefully educational) mistakes in my future. Anyway, after visiting this site with great frequency over the past 6+ months, for ink/pen reviews, general discussions, repair/maintenance advice etc., I decided it was high time I at least announce myself and feel like less of a stalker. So, hello! And thank to all for creating and contributing to such a rich site. -Chris
  11. I am totally new to fountain pens. I use the reviews from Ink Nouveau website to decide on my fountain pen materials, but so far I've only bought three Pilot Varsity's. Tips for any pens. I am a student, with a student's budget.
  12. Hi all & thanks for making this community available for people to join! I'm only very new (a couple of months in) to the joys (see: addiction) of fountain pens - collecting and using - but have well & truly caught the bug and am now, very proudly, a couple of pens in to my very own tiny collection (thanks to all the fine folks out there in credit card land!). As you may have guessed from the title, I'm based in Australia and would love to know if there are many / any other members out there from this part of the world? Well that's it from me just for now - just wanted to say hi & introduce myself. Thanks again for having me - i'm really looking forward to contributing to your community wherever I can! All the best, Mike.
  13. Hello! I'm new to fountain pen use. Picked up my first fountain pen after reading Natalie Goldberg on journaling and writing with a fountain pen. People who write a lot need a pen that can keep up, she maintains. Right she is. I write a lot everyday in a blank moleskin notebook. I was using a felt tip. Very slow. I took the plunge. I bought a disposable type shaeffer at Hobby Lobby. (I hear you cringing!) Too many starts and stops, flow probs. Long story short, after a leaky TWSBI and stops and starts on a Nemosine I got a Lamy 2000 Fine nib after reading a jazillion reviews. Now I'm finally beginning to know what I'd like. Something as reliable as the Lamy 2000, piston fill, faster/more ink flow, lighter weight. I write fairly quickly, not particularly hard pressing or small handwriting. Just sort of flowy mess. Also, I don't have a preference as to caps, posting or not but I don't like a screw on cap. Any suggestions? Any full size blank notebook favorites as well? Paper preferences? Thanks!

    Thanks For Having Me !

Hello all ... I recently have been infected with this terrible germ (fountain pens!) ... Starting a small collection of pens, tools, etc. I'm a renaissance type of person and after careers as a musician/composer, technologist on Wall St., I'm now a school teacher living on the beautiful Maine coast with a wife, 1 fat blue cat, 2.5 horses, 2.5 goats, 2 passed greyhounds, and one new muttpuppy with no name AND: 1 1997 apprx. MB Meisterstuck 146 1 LAMY Vista w/ converter 1 KawecoSport Ice (orange) converted to an eyedropper As I spend and have spent so much time producing words electronically I find it very enjoyable to have dusted off my cursive, but am still struggling to make hand writing as productive. I'm realizing it is its own reward I guess. Looking forward to uncovering this network ...
  15. Nice to meet you! 15 years ago my parents frowned at me, when I bought my first serious fountain pen; a Waterman of about 70 euro's. In their opinion: A] waaaay too much money for a poor student to spending on anything not directly necessary and B] An absolute bizar amount of money to spend on something as irrelevant as a pen But I absolutely loved my pen (after working years with a variety of low-quality pens). Sadly I lost that specific pen. In a hotel room in France. If there's any country suitable for losing a Waterman, it's probable France, but still sad. After that first serious FP, serveral others became in my possession... And today my pen-love even shows some signs of addictive behaviour.. I'm a 'anonymous FPN reader' for quite some time now... Today it felt like the right moment to have my public coming out. So here I go: "Hi. My name is thINK and I'm a pen-o-holic". After a period of pure sponging up a lot of information here, I'm planning on some point write nice pen and/or ink-reviews in the future to contribute to FPN. Warm regards, *thINK*
  16. Hello FPN, I'm posting on here because I really have no idea where to start - some of you are SO knowledgeable I'm hoping you can help! Perhaps this post can also be a reference for other people like me who are just getting started. The Background: I'm currently completing an internship / studying abroad in the United Kingdom, and will most likely be in Germany next summer for another internship. Being here has provided me with access to materials related to FPs that I have never experienced before. With that being said I'm originally from the North-eastern part of the United States, which is where I'm attending University studying Financial Economics with the intention to study medicine for my post-graduate studies. I received my first FP as a gift from my German friends when I was no older than 12 - at that time my FP hardly received any use at all. I always knew that I had it, but never used it because I was afraid kids at school would steal it, and I would be ridiculed for being different (both of those being highly likely). Coupled with my inability to easily procure ink cartridges in the U.S. and my complete lack of knowledge about converters, I also didn't want to "waste" my meagre ink cartridge supply. Regarding penmanship, I think I'm the only one of my friends that learned to write in cursive before learning to print! The first school I attended didn't teach "print" until the fifth grade. Naturally, as that was the first way I learned to write, and I find it quicker, I have always tended to write in cursive. My cursive however is dreadful, and it's something I've wanted to improve. Fast forward a few years to my recent past: After spending time in Germany last summer, the introduction to converters and, resulting from long hours during the school year, the means to procure what I wish - I'm now on a mission to expand my palate and understanding of the FP world. What I have: Pens - currently all of the pens I have are LAMY, because frankly I think (in my obviously biased opinion) that they are decent pens and if they happened to get lost I would not be worse for the wear. I have a LAMY: Studio, Al-star F, Al-Star 1,5, Safari B, My least favorite pen is the studio, for some reason I've never really liked it besides the day I bought it, and my favorite pen which I use constantly is the Blue Al-Star with an F nib Penmanship - a 5 book set off of Amazon that is supposed to teach me Spenserian. Paper Goods: only moleskin and basic writing paper. Ink - LAMY Black well ink, Noodler's Bulletproof ink What I'm looking for: Someone to point me in the right direction (hence the title). I would really like to improve my handwriting, and learn new fonts. I've read enough posts to understand that this is not a timeless task, and is probably something I will spend the rest of my life learning - which I'm fine with. To me it is something that is invaluable, especially in this digital world. With that being said, where does one start? Is it better to try and attend a class (are there even such things??) to learn the basics? Are there exercises people do? I'm also looking for someone to point me in the right direction for pens - I love my LAMY Al-star, but I think I'm ready to branch away from LAMY (or get a new one...) and begin understanding more about fountain pens. Clearly there are many old pens, new pens, weird, old pen makers and everyone on this network seems to have a ridiculously passionate opinion about everything they prefer about their pens. Nibs. Flexible nibs? Are certain nibs for certain papers? inks? pens? Are there nib guidelines? Do certain fonts require certain nibs? Are there nib-makers in this world? I'm not even sure what to ask for here because the extent of my knowledge about nibs is that they write differently and I like my LAMY F better than my LAMY B - and my LAMY 1,5 writes "cool". Inks - clearly my parents failed to educate me because until I started reading posts on here I thought there were ballpoint inks, gel pen inks, and the ink I had in my cartridges. Whoops. Does ink matter? Are there preferred inks for different things? How does one know what ink they like? I've noticed that all papers are not created equally. I will also admit that I was somewhat shocked when I learned that Moleskin had a horrible reputation amongst FP users. I now understand why (many of the reasons people seem to dislike their product are reasons I too have encountered - and ignorantly dismissed) people have definite opinions, but I frankly had no exposure to various types of paper where I lived in the States. What paper does one use for different things? Is there a standard weight that below which I should not ever buy? What about daily diaries, in both the European and American sense of the word? I've read things about Clairefontane (spelling?), are they the gold standard? So, if people would be willing to comment and tell me/show me where to find what I'm after I would be much obliged. I know that I have much to learn but I haven't found a thread yet that seems to address my questions and I'm tired of looking around and only getting a titbit here and a tad there. One last thing - I love getting letters, and that is where most of my time writing is spent. I often joke with my friends and family that I'm unloved if I check my mailbox and I don't have letters or that I am loved by so-and-so if they have sent me a letter. I'm not sure if that will help people answer my questions in a way that is more directed to me, but it might provide a little insight into my young mind.

    Hello From Israel

Hi, Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Elliot aka ElColt and I'm new here. I've been using fountain pens since I was eight or nine years old and in fact, I still have that first Waterman fountain pen. It's what prompted me to join this network actually. I would love to know which model it is as I can't find a picture of it anywhere. I will post my photos on the Waterman pen forum in a little while. All the best to you all, E

    Greetings From Orlando

Hi y'all! I am just coming back to fountain pens after a long absence. The first FP I ever bought was a Tombow Object CD when they were available in the US, and it is still one of my daily writers. My next FP was a law school graduation gift from my Grandfather: a Montblanc Nikoli in Platinum. My first job after law school made FP use impractical, but now that I am in private practice, I can use them again. I am currently in a demonstrator/eyedropper mood, because I've had a couple of pens stolen from my desk - a blue lapis Ahab and my Black Tombow Object CD, but my Conklin demonstrator was left alone- and it was the most expensive! I am partial to Noodlers and J.Herbin inks, burial trying to branch out into other colors.

Hi Fpners (Greetings From Hong Kong)

Hi everyone! Just want to say hi. I'm glad to have finally purchased my first "proper" fountain pen, a Waterman Hemisphere and will be using it lots. As of now I'm trying to look for an affordable vintage pen with good flex fine/e fine and if anyone has any for sale below $75 please contact me!

    New Enthusiast And Member

Hello all. I'm new to FPN and also to fountain pen stuff (well I did have a period about 12 years ago where I played with a Parker Vector and some Pilot disposables while a teenager). A few weeks ago I found two of my wife's great grandfathers pens (a 1938 Parker Vacumatic and late '20s/early '30s Duofold). I was quickly enamored with them and the wider world of pens and filling systems and tinkering. Well, here I am, 24 pens later (have been through most every antique/junk store in Oklahoma City and my first ebay experience. I've been trying to aquire a broad variety of pens cheaply (every one has been under $18) and gaining bits of knowlege about these vintage pens and how to restore them. I'm more interested in figuring these pens out and making them sing, rather than collecting, per se. It's been a blast so far and I am already indebted to FPN and the broader online FP community for much of the knowledge I've been able to cram into the past month or so. So, I figured I'd dive right in to learn more and maybe share some myself. Questions are welcome!
