Hi everyone , I'm a new member here. This is going to be fun and interesting Here is my small collection so far...
  2. Hi everyone! I just joined this group and hope to learn from all of you. I am new to collecting and using fountain pens except when I was little before the ballpoint pens came round, a long time ago.

    Hello From Southwest Florida

Just found this site. I have many fountain pens...people at work think I am funny. Somehow writing with a fountain pen feels good. Looking forward to learning more...I am also looking for the perfect blue ink!

    Hello From Pennsylvania

I can't believe it's taken me this long to join FPN! I discovered fountain pens in January 2011, starting with a Pilot 78G purchased from Norman Haase. His kind guidance helped me feel my way into bottled ink, investing in new pens...and now I have over 25 pens, mostly in the sub-$75 range, and I use them every day, have started mixing my own inks on occasion, have filled a tea tin with Goulet ink samples. In other words, I should have been here a long time ago. Glad to be here at last. I do have a few questions I might as well toss out to start. First of all, are the nibs on the Duke Mako and/or 962 removable? Second, I've had the same paint-flaking issue with my Monteverde Intima Volcano that others have reported here. Has anyone found a way to seal the section where the paint has flaked? I bought my pen over a year ago from Goulet, and while they were concerned when I brought this to their attention, they didn't offer a return or refund, and I hadn't thought to contact Yafa. So now I'm trying to figure out how to make the pen hold together as is. Thanks, and looking forward to lots of conversations.

    Hullo!

Hi folks. I have been lurking around your forum for a while now, and I figured I'd finally join in on some conversation. Great information on this site. The coil reservoir is something I use all the time, and I found that post here. I use dip and fountain pens for a mix of drawing and hand lettering, so I may have more drawing and drafting based posts. Cheers!

    New From Florida

I just joined from Florida, USA. I do have a project pen that I want to get functional. It has no threads, the bladder/sac is hard and broken. Jody
  8. Hello everyone! I've recently started getting serious about FPs after using them for several years in school. I'm back to school, doing my masters after a few years of working. I have a special interest in Indian and Japanese pens. Although I'm back to a very meagre source of funding (like during my college days, arrrggh pocket money!) I enjoy the challenge of finding good quality FPs that make me confident of stretching my budget. I'm particularly interested in finding old retail shops which sell interesting FPs. I've lived in Bombay and Madras (Chennai) previously, where I was spoilt by the sheer choice and accessibility of wonderful shops, usually led by gentle uncles and aunties, filled with years of knowledge, experience and stories on everything FP-related. Looking forward to discovering something similar in Bangalore!

    The Return Of Minimaupassant

Hi everyone After a hiatus of a good few years, I am returning back to the forum. I've missed you. While I have been away, I have been using my FPs every single day, but things have changed a bit in my life. Over the last couple of years I have moved about four times (now living in central Manchester UK, which is very cool) and have set up my own business (which is also cool). You won't be surprised to learn that my business is around writing and my new logo incorporates a fountain pen. I'll post a picture when I get the image files back from the designer. I can see things have evolved a little bit as well on the forum. Things look slightly different and there are a lot of new faces in amongst the old friends. I say hello to all of you and look forward to many chats and discussions about our favourite topics of pens, paper and ink. Leonie

Im New To Fountain Pen Network

Hi my name is christopher and i am kind of new to the whole fountain pen world. a friend of mine who uses fountain pens told me to make an account here. i currently own a cross aventura and a parker im chrome chiselled. my hobbies other than fountain pens are rc racing, playing video games and studying. i am also 13 years old and go to highschool. im currently in 9th grade and i have a very high gpa score (upper 90's). my my story of how i got into fountain pens was when i was in 7th grade. my science teacher made us write so many notes. i would get so many cramps on my hands and she was very strict. she would punish us if we didn't write the notes. so i basically had to suffer in science class every day. then one day i thought i need something that will help me write without putting so much pressure on the pen. so i have tried so many different pens. iv tried out ball points, roller balls etc. and i never got what i wanted so i went on google and searched up best pen for fast and continuous writing and it recommended me to use a fountain pen. i at the time have never heard of a fountain pen and i wanted to try it out. i of coarse am very privileged and as a natural instinct i wanted the best fountain pen and it leaded me to mont blanc pens and i thought that yes these pens are pretty expensive but they are the best. so i thought i shouldn't get that and try something cheap and disposable. so i found a pilot varsity. it was cheap and disposable so i asked my dad to get me one and he said that i shouldn't use fountain pens because i wont like them. i of coarse believed him to a certain point but i have never tried one so he went ahead and got me a pilot varsity. that was the moment i fell in love with fountain pens. i new that that was what i needed to pass the 8th grade with out breaking my fingers with that continuous writing. so i loved the pen but then i went on to 8th grade and i had an ela teacher who uses fountain pens at home. she was a really nice teacher and noticed that i write with fountain pens so she wanted to speak to me after class. she asked me" are you new to pens" and i replied yeah i am. so she said well there is a whole new world of fountain pens that i think you have yet to discover and she said that i should get something a little more than my pilot varsity. i of coarse went home and looked up fountain pens and i went on staples and found a beautiful fountain pen . that was the cross aventura. this pen i got it in white and it was on sale for $25. i used this pen for some time but then i was getting problems on the pen. i was getting ink on the section out of no were and then is started to leak on the barrel and then in ela class it leaked so much i had to go to the bathroom to clean my self. i even had to put the pen in a plastic bag and no longer use it untill it was fixed. the teacher told me that i need to clean my pen thoroughly. i didn't believe her and i thought i had to throw it away and she said no and to follow her directions. i pretty much had not ther choice but to follow her directions. and it worked i was in shock that my pen came back to life again. i thanked my teacher for telling me this and then a couple of days later disaster happened. i dropped my pen standing up and the pen fell on the nib. the nib was so pushed back in that it wont even write. and if it did it would either make random ink blots or scratch the paper so much that at some point i think that the pen ripped a paper i was testing it on. i never used that pen again. i had to suffer with a bic pen untill my next fountain pen with wasnt untill 3 weeks that my dad came along and picked up a parker pen that belonged to someone else that no longer wanted it. i of coarse took it because of how despitly i needed a fountain pen. i then found out that i needed ink and a ink converter. i got the converter from amazon and the ink from staples. i got the parker quink in black. i liked the pen and i use that pen as my primary pen today as i have nothing else. after acouple of months of using it i still have yet to finish my ink bottle. i have a 57ml ink bottle and it lasted me a very long time. i am currently still using my ink bottle today and i am also half full. i also want to ask you guys how should i fill up my pen. should i just tilt it to get the rest of the ink or should i just buy another one. i honestly dont want to tilt it and want to avoid doing that at all costs. yep thats pretty much it and also if any of you guys wonder about the rc racing and one of you guys are interested about what cars i have. i have a traxxas summit and an hpi baja 5sc(stock and used mostly for off roading or drag racing). thank you guys for reading my story of how i got into fountain pens and i hope i didnt bore you to death with so much to read. thank you also guys for my birthday i asked my dad to get me a namiki falcon II from the fountain pen hospital and he said yes. im so excited for the new gift.

    Greetings From New York

Good day everyone ! My name is Aaron, and I am very excited to become part of your community. I am relatively new to fountain pens; appx. 3 months or so at this point. I have amassed a medium sized collection of pens from family and heirlooms of family members pre dating the ballpoint or rollerball. I currently have 15 pens, and have been studying proper form and Italic writing as well as my own quasi calligraphy or, as my wife calls it my own style of "fancy" writing ! I hope not only to become an active member here, and to learn, but eventually to contribute, and become an asset as well ! Cheers and happy writing ! Thank you for having me. - Aaron
  13. I have recently gotten interested in fountain pens. While not wholly a stranger to the fountain pen, I haven't really done much with them in a long time, but I have started a very limited and humble collection. Mostly the inexpensive Chines fountain pens that are available on EBAY and Amazon. But I also have a few classic Esterbrook pens, and a couple of Monteverde pens that I have yet to ink-up and take out for a road test. My main interest in fountain pens is artistic. I'm more or less a professional artist and I enjoy drawing with them even more than writing. Find attached a few examples of drawings that I have created using fountain pens. I use many different art materials in my work, but I want to see just how far I can go with the fountain pen. My goal is to continue creating art with fountain pen, and perhaps even create a blog on the subject. While a great many people use fountain pens for writing, doing art with them, while certainly NOT unheard of, is still a bit more unusual. Any any input from the members, both artists and non-artists alike, here would be greatly appreciated. Anyway, I'm pleased to be part of this website. MJBivouac

    Hello From Calgary

Hello everyone. I've been haunting the forums for the last few months, ever since I suddenly stumbled into the world of fountain pens. I've been reading tons here and it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to actually start chatting with everyone instead of just reading over your collective shoulders. So, a little about me. I'm currently living in Calgary, Alberta, I prefer tea to coffee, i have way too many blue inks. I've been exploring fountain pens and loving it! My current favourite ink is J. Herbin Lie de The, however I am currently too excited about all my pens to have decided on a favourite yet. Lol I am looking forward to bumping shoulders with all of you in the forums.

I have Apache Sunset, Bernake Blue, X-Feather, and lightning blue.
  16. I am a public school educator in NC. I got into fountain pens by purchasing a pen to commemorate major events in my life. Looking forward to learning a lot from the network!

    Hello

Hello to all FPN members. I am not a collector, regular seller or buyer, however I received as a gift a Mont Blanc Floating Star pen with a ball point insert about 9 years ago. I know it is legitimate because I received a gift receipt with it and it was purchased at Mont Blanc store in Northern Virginia. I have never used or carried this pen in fear of losing it. I am now at the point, nine years later, wanting to sell it since I do not use it. I have the box it came in, the box that the box came in and the paper work that came with it. Insert will need to be replace I an sure it has dried up by now. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what I might be able to get for this pen? I have seen it new as low as $370 and as high as $550. I realize mine is still considered used and not worth as much. Any help[ would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Hello From New Mexico, Usa

Hi, I am new to the "official" world of pen collecting, but have had a fascination with the fountain pen, stationery, and ink since I was about 13. I was living in Japan at the time, and became enamored of the variety of writing paper and pens (particularly fountain pens) available. My best writing pen remains to this day, 30 years later, a pen that probably cost $.50 usd, and is cheap looking and feeling. However, put a cartridge in it, and it will flow every time. I have since been acquiring inexpensive ($15.00 and less) pens that come from China. I have a Dark Green Bulow x450, an Ivory Jinhao x750, and the current prize of the collection, a TWSBI Vac 700 received as a gift from another collector who just didn't like it. I am currently waiting on two Baoer 388 pens, and one Jinhao 250 and x450. I cannot yet afford the more expensive Parkers, Montblancs, and Cross's. But, someday..... Anyway, just dropping in to say Hi, and a little about my collecting.

I discovered that during the last year when searching for information I routinely ended up on FPN so decided to join up; peruse the forums and perhaps find some way to contribute. I’ve been an avid fountain pen user since college and still have my Waterman (turquoise case, 14k gold nib) which I got for my birthday some decades ago. I just had it restored and is now writing well again. I’ve been writing almost exclusively with Montblancs for the last 19 years with the Meisterstuck 146 being the work horse. A few years ago I added a Montblanc Boheme as a travel pen; I liked the more robust build and the retractable nib. It’s also easier to take a few cartridges on a flight than a bottle of ink. This last Christmas my wife gave me the Montblanc Carlo Collodi and I found some accompanying ink to pair up. This pen has been a real joy to write with and I’ve even grown fond of the brownish ink (I’ve been a traditional black/blue writer). It has a medium nib like my others and while appears a little ostentatious with the gold cap design, when unposted presents a solid streamline appearance and very smooth writing. I’ll include a photo below.

    Hello From California

Hi, My name is Nancy and I'm a new pen-oholic. Actually I've liked fountain pens since I was a child and got my first calligraphy set (which I didn't stick with long enough to learn and I'm making a second attempt at that presently). I'm an artist, old military musician and collector of many things outside my "day job" of managing an attorney's office. A dear friend is responsible for the resurgence of my fountain pen interest this time. I started out with a few Lamy pens and quickly began to go nuts. I don't foresee this pattern changing for a while... *sigh* For my first question, I have a large #8 Warranted 14k nib that I need to know how to find a pen for. It doesn't fit in any of my pens which use #6 nibs (I suppose that deserves a "duh"). How do I locate a pen to use this in? Thanks and hello! Nancy

    Hello From Dfw

Hello from Dallas/Fort Worth. I've had fountain pens before, but only briefly. I just ordered a Pilot Animal fountain pen which should arrive today (I guess it's the same as the Metropolitan-I liked the matte gold more than the gold in the Metropolitan line). I was impressed by the glowing reviews found searching Google and the price. I plan on using it everyday, and carrying it with me. I'm an architect and I journal, so I plan on sketching and writing. I'll be poking around the site to get info on ink, maintenance, general info, etc... Question though, and maybe I need to post it elsewhere: anyone refill cartridges from bottled ink with blunt tip syringes? Seems to me to get the best both worlds, cartridges and bottles ink: convenience and variety. Any thoughts?
  23. Greetings FPN, I am finally getting off my butt to introduce myself and beg your indulgences with loads of questions. (Warning – long post) My name is Matthew and I’m grad student in Cleveland, Ohio. I have come to fountain pens through two routes: practicality/comfort & fun. I’m currently studying for a pretty important exam that I’ll be taking in about a month. As such, I have been (and will be) studying about 8 hours/day, everyday. This involves a fair amount of writing and note taking. I could probably go faster by using a computer, but I retain information better when I take notes by hand. Up until recently, I had been using the Dr. Grip Ltd gel pens, but was developing a bit of tendonitis. In the interest of making the process of studying more enjoyable and less physically painful, I decided to try out fountain pens. Less pressure, easier writing and a little bit o’ fun. And now I’m hooked. It’s cruel, really. I live on a very meager budget. But studying effectively is very important to me, so I have a small but limited budget that I can devote to finding the right tools for the job. Are there people in the Cleveland area (local to me) who can help me? I’ve learned a lot about pens, inks and paper in the past two month, through trial and error, reading blogs, watching youtube videos and lurking here (lots of lurking). Unfortunately, I find myself no longer able to spend the time (or money) I need to research all that is out there. Also, in chunks of $20-$50, I have spent about $150 looking for suitable tools in the short term. Most of that money has been well-spent, but enough has resulted in disappointment that I’m reluctant to part with much more without a better clue. For example, I generally prefer larger grip (10+mm) pens that come in around 15-25g and are well balanced. I tend to prefer finer points, so I’ve focused my pen search on Japanese fine and European extra-fine nibs. I currently own the following Pens, Ink and Paper: Pens: 9-Pilot Varsities (converting them to eyedropper as I run out of ink), 1-Pilot Metropolitan, 1-Pilot 78g – broad (stub) – I had to try, 2-Platinum Preppies Inks: Noodler’s X-Feather (regular black wasn’t black enough and I was working with cheap paper), Diamine Red Dragon (oddly enough, I prefer this to Oxblood) and Noodler’s BSB (still using sample – I love the color and feel; I would only use this in cheap and/or dedicated pens). Paper: Started with some Piccadilly notebooks I already had (lots of bleeding except with X-feather), now using Clairefontaine (A4 & 8.5x11) and Franklin-Christoph Firma-Flex (A5 & A6). There’s more to the story, of course. But, in a (large) nutshell, that’s it. Any thoughts? - Matthew

    Hello There!

Longtime fountain pen user--I have delusions of being a published author some day and writing a first draft with a fountain pen is my preferred psychological crutch when inspiration is running thin--but completely new to actually collecting them, and to maintenance beyond periodic flushing with water. I am sadly in search of a new daily pen, as my black Esterbrook J went walkabout when I moved last June, and my glass dip pen is still packed... somewhere. The only pens I have in hand right now are my grandfather's Conklin Endura Symetrik (in need of repair), and a Parker "21" desk set that arrived in the mail yesterday from eBay. Not much else -- my ID is from Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fandom and stands for The Rev Dr Sherwood Forrester; I'll answer to Rev or Sherwood or 'Hey, you!', or just about anything really. I feel obliged to point out that I'm not a doctor in either the medical, academic, or Time Lord senses... and I'm not especially a reverend either.

    Greetings From Texas

Hey! After a few months lolly-gagging on the forums, I finally took the time (and initiative) to introduce myself. I'm currently a postgraduate and a reborn FP-user (from my early teens, where I actually acquired a bit of $$ buying and selling pens on the Bay) who realized that if I'm going to spend the next 10 years studying and scribbling down notes, I might as well enjoy every minute of it! I just wanted to say hello and show you a few pics of one of my favorite pens so far - a TWSBI Micarta One of things I love most about this pen, is that its unique material allows for some 'customization' to be done to it. A few months ago, I bought and sold another Micarta that had some 'gold' work done to the characters and numbers on the cap. (I thank the first owner of that Micarta for giving me the idea!) On this Micarta, I wanted something a little more subtle, yet still eye-catching, so I colored in the etchings with J. Herbin's 1670 RH. Reason? to get that cool sheen of course! In normal light, the writings just look dark/black as normal. But in a specific light, they will shine that bright green that we are all familiar with in the Rouge Hematite ink. And thankfully, on the pen, the non-waterproof ink is pretty resistant when I tested it with water on the pen (so at least it stays on there and not my hands lol). I'm mostly glad that they are only green in certain light, though, because it would be a little obnoxious if they were constantly shining green IMO. So here are some links to the pictures, some in the light, and some out of light. Btw, I also applied Noodler's Dragon's Napalm to the entire pen, to give it a little darker/redder hue. So far, the ink has not gotten on my hands at all. Let me know what you think! http://www.flickr.com/photos/119945136@N08/13039588253/in/photostream/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/119945136@N08/13039589103/in/photostream/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/119945136@N08/13039441555/in/photostream/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/119945136@N08/13039442545/in/photostream/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/119945136@N08/13039803714/in/photostream/lightbox/
