  1. Hello Everyone, I bought a used 149 from an online seller in the U.K. last week. The serial number on the warranty card matches the one inscribed on the pen cap. But what I am curious is the nib size. The warranty card says the nib is Fine (F). But many of my friends who are FP fans say, from what it writes, it should be a Medium (M) nib. Could it be possible that an F writes like an M? Also, I was trying to switch the ink from Diamine Blue Velvet to Diamine Bilberry yesterday. When I attempted to screw the piston to remove blue velvet back into its bottle, some ink came out from the piston side. This is my first piston pen; I suppose that this could be a normal behaviour of the piston. But when I explained the symptom to a friend who has a 146, he recalls similar experience, said there is a slight leak near the piston threads and suggested that I visit a boutique to have it repaired. Is this normal? Should I have it repaired or should I live with it? Cheers!! Thiti

    Montblanc 149 Nib Size?

Hey there! I bought a Montblanc 149 from an auction and finally got it today! Really happy about it, since my daily writer to this day has been a Lamy Nexx or Safari. I got told it's a M size nib, but it is really big compared to the M nib I had on the Lamys. I really like it, but I'm just not sure if it really is a M. So, that brings me to my question: http://imgur.com/TK59KRP top: http://imgur.com/EWczmCe bottom: http://imgur.com/Yp3Rlpv side: http://imgur.com/zHvEPVg I've also encountered a little problem, but probably it's because the pen only got used once and isn't "written in" yet: it has some hard starts depending on how I hold it and - if I use it on rather "slippery" paper - sometimes doesn't lie down ink at all. However, once it writes there are no skips, even if I make very long lines across the paper. It's always just the start. Is this because it's a new pen? Or because of my ink? I use the Iroshizuku kon-peki, had the same "problem" with the iroshizuku yama-budo, however. Thanks for your help in advance! Regards, Sehn
  3. Finally found a 149 with BBB nib to complete the regular 149 nibsizes. Unfortunately the tip best time is over, compared to a OBB and a OBBB it is more like a dry B. Because it will only be occasionally used , here's the dilemma. Should I keep the nib authentic and keep it out of rotation or should I send it to a nibmeister to retip and loose a part of the authenticity? A writing sample compared to OBB and OBBB ( sorry for the bad handwriting ) and some pictures of the nib.
  4. Review of Montblanc 149 14K bicolor fine with split ebonite feed and brass filler threads, W. Germany stamped on clip band. Dated to late 1980s or very early 1990s. Condition: Very good to excellent. Ink: R&K Salix Appearance: 9 Clean, modern shape with just a little too much bling for my taste. I prefer Lamy's Bauhaus inspired designs, and to me the nib on the 149 would look better without the Wilhelmian scrollwork. I have seen images of the all-black, unadorned Sailor KOP and I would prefer the 149 without the gold bands and nib-tracery. Having said that, the pen is beautiful as an archetype of fountain pen design imitated by dozens of others (including of course Sailor). The pen reminds me of an aging BMW E30 that was built about the same year as this pen -- they share the same solidity and functional aesthetic. Construction and Quality: 10 Calling plastic "precious resin" is a little silly, but the pen does feel more substantial and durable than my other plastic pens, with the exception of Lamy's 2000. The pen feels functional and the fit and finish are flawless throughout. The ebonite feed seems particularly well-made and is a good match for that nib. Weight and Dimensions: 10 Perfect size for those with large hands and long fingers. Very well balanced especially posted. Despite the large size and substantial feel, the pen is surprisingly light and comfortable. Nib and Performance: 9-10 The 14K nib is springy and opens up readily under pressure. I understand that this is not a flex nib, it does provide a little line-variation without any effort and quite a bit of line variation when you want it. The nib provides good feedback and control. It is not my smoothest writer, but is somehow better for not being smooth. The nib feels right somehow in a way that is difficult to describe. Filling System: 10 Smooth and capacious piston filler that flushes quickly due to large volumes of water in each fill. Cost and Value: 10 (used) The pen cost me $225 delivered, purchased on Amazon as a used pen for $289 plus shipping minus a $70 instant discount from Amazon for signing up for their credit card (I wrote the wrong price in the handwritten version of the review). This is by far my most expensive pen, but a good value given the quality and pleasure of writing. Conclusion: 58-9/60 I can tell that this will compete with my current favorite pens (Lamy 2000 OB and Lamy Vista with 14K F) for prime position in my stable. Very appealing writer.

Can The Top Of A 1980S 149 Screw Off?

I've never disassembled a 149, but someone told me that the top of the cap of some 1980s pens can screw off, like the one from the 1950s. Is that true?
  6. Dear FPN Friends, Good day! How would you rate this 50's celluloid Montblanc 149 Silver Rings pen on a scale of 10. Pen has been completely restored, writes a smooth line and in excellent condition otherwise... Appreciate any help received in advance! My First Montblanc

This was a bit of an impulse purchase. I always wanted to try a Montblanc, and when a vintage one came up for sale for a fair price, I just went for it. This was purchased locally from a fellow who had another Montblanc pen. He stated that he had never used it, but there are 2 scratch marks on the barrel, one or two minor scuff marks, and dried blue ink on the section and in the barrel. This resin, single barrel pen came in a beige clamshell case with instructions and a lifetime guarantee. Cell phone pictures: The Montblanc star is a clear white The clip ring has "Germany" stamped Montblanc Meisterstruck 149 with gold rings 18C tricoloured medium nib, very smooth, very responsive, very wet. Writing upside down isn't really this nib's thing. This would suggest a 1970s pen slated for the French market. If the documentation is believed, this was sold in the US, though. Overall, this is great pen, except the medium nib is broader than I can handle. Any suggestions to dry the flow of ink would be greatly appreciated!

    Feeding Problem?

I've noticed lately that I've had skip/feed problems with my 149 (BB) and Noodler's Legal Lapis. The nib starts to skip like it's almost out of ink, but it's not. I've noticed that if I bleed off 1 drop of ink the FP writes fine. I've had to do this 2 times already on this one fill. Normally I only bleed off 1 drop when I fill my FPs. Do I need to change this? I've had this FP about 3 years and I've never had this problem before. Any advice? Thanks in advance.
  9. My friend John is a photographer and asked me if he could borrow a few fountain pens to shoot for his portfolio. I think he did a great job. http://static.squarespace.com/static/51c300c1e4b034c963afc8b8/t/51c48c43e4b0c5a944a39daa/1371835461423/20%20-%20Pennor0564.jpg Pilot Capless, TWSBI Diamond 540, Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo ink, Pilot Custom, Pilot MYU BS-500. http://static.squarespace.com/static/51c300c1e4b034c963afc8b8/t/51c48c2ce4b09ee48eb671cd/1371835437733/20%20-%20Pennor0531.jpg Montblanc Meisterstück 149, Waterman Carène, custom Nakaya, Iroshizuku Chiku-rin and Tsutsuji ink. Mb 149: Real Or Fake?

I bought if from ebay. What worries me is that there's no "14K" or "18K" on the nib, although it has a Au750 mark. Has anybody have seen any 149 without "18k" mark? I really want to know if it's authentic or not. Thanks a lot!! Here are some photos. Thanks!!!!!!
