  1. Two beauties actually A matte black Ebonite Majestic, no clip, no ring, with a Bock #8 nib, and a Model 3, Black/Red, Premium Ebonite, semi-gloss, wider Bock threaded section, and Pilot FA nib. I very much appreciate Ranga accommodating me, and making these excellent pens to suit my needs and wishes. Thank you Mr Kandan! Apologies for the small file size. Clicking on the image will reveal two photos. The second with uncapped pens. First try using a Gallery. 2104KD_Ranga-101 By Karmachanic 0 2104KD_Ranga-101 By Karmachanic
  2. This review is for my latest pen from Shawn Newton of Newton Pens. I have two other pens that he has created for me over the last few years. The first was the subject of a previous review. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/309902-my-experience-with-newton-pens/. I told Shawn that I would write a review for this one, so here it goes. I will add pictures below, but for a good one from Shawn’s Instagram account, see here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1okkgPheEt/. I should start by saying that this pen was a creation that was several years in the making. It was not my grail pen, but one of those “if I can ever find it” type of pens that I had in my head. I have been to enough shows over the years to know I would never see in real life what was in my mind, so I decided to design it myself. I described the vision and Shawn got it right on all levels. Color and Material The color and material deserve a bit of explanation. It is custom dark purple made of ebonite. When you see the picture from Shawn’s Instagram account, you see the purple of the color as it appears when under the lights. When you see my pictures below, it looks much darker—almost black. This result is intentional. I wanted a purple that was so dark that it looked like it was black until you get close to it. When I described the color I wanted, I described it as being like Private Reserve’s Ebony Purple ink. My pictures are taken in the normal light of a work office and you can see the “natural” look of the color. The point is the effect is exactly right. If I am using it at my desk, most people would just think it is a regular black pen, but it is really much more. Nib and Clip The nib is titanium and has a cursive italic grind. Very smooth and easily to use. I chose the titanium because I did not have any in my collection. Also, I wanted it to go well with the clip. The clip is also a custom design using the lion’s head as the centerpiece. The use of titanium for the nib just made sense to create the feel of the pen I wanted – majestic. Style The pen itself is the Majestic from Newton Pens. Although I have a number of brands in my collection, I am partial to the shape of my Montblancs. I asked Shawn for something close to my Montblanc 149 in shape and size, and the Majestic fits the bill. The size is a Large. The Majestic is the closest shape to the Montblanc, but it is not the same. It is a bit thicker in the barrel, which works for me. General comments: So overall, what I created with the combination of the color, style, nib and clip, was what I call my “Purple Majesty.” Again, the concept has been in my head for years. Shawn made it real. The filling system is a piston, which is also a new style of piston from Shawn and works very smoothly. In the pictures below, I include a comparison with a Montblanc 149 and Pelikan M1000 for size purposes. The brown pen in the comparison photos is also a Newton original that Shawn designed around an old Montblanc 146 nib I had acquired in the late 90s. Like my other two, it operates as well as any of my pens from other “well-known” brands. I’ll conclude by commenting on a couple of points that might be of consideration for someone thinking about getting a pen from Newton Pens. For a custom pen, expect to be patient because there is a long wait time for a pen. The wait time for this pen was about 16 months. For me, the wait time has an advantage. I am at a point in my collecting life where I have the main ones that I have always wanted, so I am not in need of any pens and I have the luxury of waiting for what I want. This ability to wait helps for the second point. A Newton Pen with a custom color, clip and piston filler is not cheap, although it is still less expensive than the retail of several top brands. The advantage of being able to wait for production of the pen is it makes the expense far more manageable. The wait time provides plenty of time to save money so it is there when Shawn is ready to do the work. Obviously, it is a personal choice, but for me, it has just been a matter of thinking about the extra money I would waste on fast food and other vices each week and putting it away for my pens. If you have been thinking about getting a Newton Pen, just start the conversation with Shawn about what you want and then the rest will take care of itself.

    Nib Sheath On Vintage Pen

I've never seen a sheath around a nib before. Is this common practice when putting a replacement Nib on a vintage pen? What is used for the sheath? It could be part of a sac, or some heat shrink material. What are the pros and cons? Does the sheath impact the ink flow? When you do this can the sheath be trimmed back a little to show more of the nib? I got a majestic pen out of a junk box at the DC pen show. It is really cool black stripes over purple marble. However, it seems to have a replacement nib with a rubber sheath around it. Without the sheath the feed doesn't fit the pen. See the picture. The nib has and engraved oval with CHJ or CHI 14k in it. What type of nib is this? BTW. 8 fixer upper pens for $50. Four had gold nibs (Wing-Flow 3 and 4s). The Majestic, Two Esterbrook Js, An Epenco, A Parkette, A nameless bulb filler, and a nameless not sure of the filling system. I'm having fun. This was also posted in Nib and tines which seemed to be the wrong place.
  4. So, I thought I'd try my hand at a little restoration and decided to go with the cheaper Majestic in case I completely ruined the pen. I managed to disassemble it with a little soaking (there was lots of old ink residue inside of everything). I used my micro-mesh pads to polish it up, and smooth out a little tooth on the nib (still needs a little work) but, I have no idea how this pen fills. The listing said its a cartridge pen but it seems like its too early to be a cartridge pen, plus I cant image how you would get the feed into a cartridge. Then I thought maybe its missing a piece, perhaps a plunger or something like that but I don't see where any of that would attach and if original, the breather tube seems too be really long for something like that. So I settled on a eye dropper but, everything leaks right out around the nib and feed. So I bring it to the community. Attached are pictures, assembled and disassembled. Any thoughts?
  5. Hey everyone! I apologize in advance for the lack of photos; pens are all apart right now for cleaning/repair...will add pics later... Since I had to drive home from school (Walla Walla to Bellevue) to pick up a bicycle (long story) I thought I'd seize the opportunity and visit all the antique shops on the way and see what I could find. I am quite pleased with what I've found! In order of coolness, they are: -A Parker Duofold in black and white pearl celluloid with a flex (!!!) nib, has both clip and ring (???) -A small Majestic in blue and bronze celluloid with a flexible 14k warranted nib -A small Wearever in red celluloid with a very flexible 14k warranted nib The Duofold's barrel has some moderate-to-severe discoloration but its cap is only lightly discolored. The pen is in shockingly good condition overall. It also has both a clip and a ring on the cap, which is pretty odd. I originally planned on selling it, but I might just keep it because it's so cool. I bought it at a shop in Richland and I have to say that I would highly recommend a trip to the Uptown shopping center if you are ever in the area; it's a strip mall-esque amalgamation of stores but there are 3 or 4 bona fide antique shops in it so it certainly warrants a stop, especially considering it's only about 5 minutes off of the highway. The Majestic is a surpsingly attractive pen considering its third-tier origins, and the flex nib seals the deal. Apparently Majestics were made by the same guys who made the wonderful Ambassador I bought a while back for $5, I guess that explains the flex nib... The Wearever might not work out, but I'm only out $6.50 on it anyway, so that's not too big of a deal. It's missing the clip but is otherwise cosmetically fine. I bought it because the nib had some good flex to it, but its tip was bent downwards and although I was able to get that flattened out, I think may have twisted or bent the nib out of shape and I can't quite get that figured out...come to think of it, if you want to try your hand at nib straightening and have $6.50+sh, then it's yours! I did see something else in Yakima but I didn't buy it because it was $100 and that's a little too steep for me...I am strongly considering buying it on my way back, though, because it is truly something...we'll see. nrum97 PS for WA peeps: Chinook Pass is an absolutely awesome drive! Highly recommend!
  6. I have two Regus Majestic piston fillers. One has an excess of lubricant in the piston area, which creates an ugly mess when the ink gets low and it can be seen. Can someone tell me how to clean it out, please.
  7. Okay, so it's partly my own fault, but... ...two years ago at the Dallas Pen Show, I purchased this beautiful little Majestic vest pen? I call it a vest pen as it's small. I did not take reading glasses along with me at that time and my eye sight wasn't perfect. So, I took the pen on good fait that all was well. (Perhaps the seller's eye sight was as bad as mine!) Long story short, I went to clean/use the pen for the first time tonight (don't start with me as this is the third tiny pen I had acquired) and I decided to look and see if the nib had any flex. I started to gently press the nib on my nail and suddenly, I felt it give! I had barely even touched it to the nail at this point! Horror upon horrors, I got out the magnifying glass and looked. There was a definite break line across the base of the nib, right before the collar. Ugh!!! You can see it in the photo. It has since broken completely when I gently put it back down on the feed. I decided to clean the pen to see if the vue window would become clear and it pretty much has, but I noticed the underside of the original nib was quite corroded. I have read in the small amount of info I could find, that these nibs were just average at best. Thus I must ask...can replacement nibs be found? And, if not, what size nib would work as a replacement? The nib (unless I can get the tiny part still sticking out of the collar out) doesn't tell what the nib is made of. I'm guessing steal as the color is silver (with gold in the groves up front). Any help on this would be fabulous!! It would also make me feel better, lol! Here are some photos. It's a beautiful little pen!! (The clip is different than all the photos I've seen thus far, so no clue on age.)
  8. New delivery if around twenty colours from Cult Pens today. Thought I'd share first three that I've tested tonight!
  9. Hello all, I am quite new to the FPN and I really have found this site to be very useful and everyone so friendly and helpful. I am also a new collector also as my area of knowledge is with External Horned Phonographs from 1877 to 1929 but fountain pens are new to me and I am finding great joy in collecting and using them. Currently I was writing with my Majestic Fountain Pen and broke the 14K Majestic nib. Anyone know of where a good place to start looking for a replacement? I love this pen and so upset with myself for breaking the nib. I have search everywhere I can think of and checked Ebay but now I am at a loss. Any help would be of great help being a newbie. Thanks much for any help you can provide. Kenneth Keeton
