    Loose Nib On My Safari

Hi, In cleaning my (stock) nib, I tried to wipe it dry with a cloth and it popped right off. All I could find in a Google search are articles emphasizing the difficulty of removing the nib (!), and they all just say to slide the (new) nib on, making sure it's oriented properly. I can slide it on to the feed, but it doesn't seem to slide into the section and it's just loosely sitting on the feed. What am I doing wrong? Is it supposed to go into the section? If so, do I just have to push it really hard? Thanks a lot for your help.

    Parker 17 Lady, Loose Cap

Hello FPN members. I'm new so please excuse me if this topic has already been dealt with. I have three Parker 17 Lady fountain pens all of which have the same problem - the cap will not stay on when I have the pen in my shirt or jacket pocket. I keep buying another with the hope that it will be better, but no luck. I have also had to replace several shirts and jackets. On the latest one, which is also my favourite - green with gold trim, I have been able to extract the metal insert inside the cap (I think it's called the clutch), spread it out a bit and re-insert it. The lower edge of the insert is now about 3mm from the lower edge of the cap - previously it was much further in. The cap appears to grip the pen more firmly but I find myself checking it every 30 minutes or so. How exactly should the insert be fitted and am I addressing the problem correctly? All tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Neville

    Esterbrook J Loose Section

I just bought an Esterbrook J that's in pretty good condition. Unfortunately, the section is loose from the barrel and is able to spin and be removed without much force at all. None of my other Esties have this problem, so I'm wondering two things. A) Is this fixable? If so, what is the best way to repair this problem?
  4. Hello everyone, I have a new Montegrappa Passione ballpoint that I could use some help with. This is a twist actuated ballpoint. When the ink cartridge is retracted, there is a bit of play in the action before there starts to be resistance. As it wiggles, I can feel a small pop right before the cartridge starts to extend. There is still play in the cap/rear of the pen when the ink cartridge is extended also, though not as severe. Is this something inherent to twist ballpoints or should it be tight with no play? Is there anything I can do to tighten up the cap and remove the play? Link to a video showing the pen: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mcnUDXafUqO8mUg3USzKSSrcGMzjHPC6 Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Kyle
  5. I've replaced the J-bar of one of my Esterbrook J pens with an 54mm aftermarker J-bar. After doing that I noticed that the lever is loose. While the pen otherwise worked, the rattle of the lever annoyed me enough to pull the pen apart again and try to fix it. Googling for the issue revealed some insight from Brian Anderson here. However I haven't found any information about how best to do this. So I thought I would try on my own and grabbed a couple of pliers and used that to flatten the metal on sides of the J-bar. However it didn't give easily, and I'm not sure if it helped at all. I still can't insert the J-bar in a way in which the lever isn't loose. On one occasion I almost succeeded, but after trying to use the lever 2 or 3 times, it returned to being loose once again. I must admit, I have no idea how to do this properly. Could somebody help with some advice, please?

    149 Loose Nib

Good evening all! I recently aquired a 1972-75 Montblanc 149 and started to flush it through. I have noticed that the nib and feed are loose - loose enough that with small pressure, I can actually rotate them. I'm wondering, how do I tighten the nib and feed from rotating? Secondly, who is a good place I can send my pen to be properly cleaned/polished? I'm in Australia. Thank you!

    Nib Loose In Ebonite Feed

Hi all, Have 2 pens, one Omas CS with Extra Lucens nib and one Radius, both italian, both with ebonite feeds. The issue I have with them is that when flexing, this means pressure applied, the nib rotates a little in the feed, and this is annoying. Since both have ebonite feeds, is it possible to fix this? Can you please tell me how? Thanks in advance
  9. As most High School students know, Mead and all those other American brand looseleaf paper, just dont work with fountain pens. It can be difficult to find the right paper for High School note taking that is friendly to F.P users without spending $10 per notebook such as Clairefontaine. There is nothing wrong with this paper by anymeans, it just that some H.S students like myself don't feel like investing that much for each subject, which can be up to 5 notebooks, and there's $50 which can be spend on a new pen for example. I'm Happy to announce I FOUND THE SOLUTION! After doing some research I saw that people really like the Target brand filler paper (Up and Up). First stop was there. I grabbed said paper in wide and college ruled and also grabbed a Tops brand packet which was on sale. Next stop was Walmart. I grabbed every brand, ruling, and style I could grab to do a "official" review to help people out, who have the same problem as me. Here is a list of every brand I grabbed; Tops wide ruledUp&Up wide ruledNorcom wide ruledA Norcom sprial bound notebook ( 97 cents at Walmart)Exceed wide ruled with punch hole protectorsExceed College RuledPLEASE NOTE: I am NOT a professional, these results are only based on my High School experience, and is meant to help said people The chosen ink was Noodlers Baystate Blue, which is a very heavy thick velvety ink. The chosen pen was a High School favorite, the Platinum Preppy with a Fine Nib Here are the results: Up and Up Wide ruled. Little feathering, does show through a small amount, not ideal for two sided work2. Norcom Notebook Paper (from the 97cent notebook) no feathering, little bit more show through on back, same as Up and Up, good for one sided note taking.3. Tops Wide ruled Nearly no feathering, I was shocked how well it preformed so I pulled out my Jinhao X450, (another popular student pen) With a medium nib and Noodlers X Feather, just to see if I could make it feather and show through. Still no! This Paper works great, although it has an off white-yellow color to it, which isnt personally to me appealing.4. Norcom Filler Paper Noticeable feathering, massive bleed through. Not a good paper for Fountain Pens.I was starting to get sad, as I couldn't find a paper that worked for note taking, when I realized I still had the Exceed in the Walmart bag. Let the Results explain it to you; 5. Exceed wide and college ruled Only feathering noticed is when you get the paper about 3'' from your eyes, No see through, even on a Jinhao with a Medium nib and Baystate Blue, which is a strong ink. This paper feels like you are writing with a stick of butter on a hot pan, even on a Preppy. This Paper is 110% capable of double sided notes. This paper is also very smooth and the dry time is pretty quick. Conclusion: For double sided notes in High School with any nib and ink combination, Exceed will not let you down, I tested this result by writing a short biography of me with my Jinhao M nib and Baystate, I wrote front and back and it still appears to be legible. I would recommend this paper for High School students, or anyone who writes on a daily basis. Exceed will work better on finer nibs, which is more sutible for notes. I Hope this review helped anyone trying to find a good, cheap paper for note taking.

    Loose Cap On Mb142?

I have a burgundy MB142 MB 144 that's in great shape, but the cap-to-body fit is not snug at all. There's no distinct 'click' feeling when you push the cap onto the body; you can feel a little resistance when the cap seats, but nothing positive. I can't see any cracks in the cap, or any damage anywhere on the pen. I'm also not sure where to look, since I don't know what part of the cap and what part of the pen are supposed to be engaging and providing the 'click', if that makes sense. Any help would be appreciated. Scott
  11. Hi! I was just wondering which style of notebook binding people prefer. I thought of 3 categories: wirebound, composition, and loose. Here is my view of the weakness and strength of each: Wirebound: Often perforated so sheets can be removed if needed. Could be flipped over on itself (you can make the back touch the front when writing), useful if you don't have a huge desk. The "wires" can get in your way when writing on the left page (or vice versa if you're a leftie) Composition: What happens in the book stays in the book. (pages aren't perforated and if you rips 1 page, the connecting page will also fall out) Generally speaking, no annoying 3 holes on the book. Both front and back are 1 piece (sturdiness). If you accidentally rip the binding connecting the pages and the cover, the book is trashed (the whole thing will come loose) Extraordinarily annoying rise in the center when writing, attempts to squash the pages flat will make the cover come loose or awkwardly hanging open when trying to close it. Loose: No paper underneath, so good for those who prefer the hard desk feeling. Probably the only paper recommended for the "turn-in-business" No annoying bumps in the middle like the other two. Can be lost quite easily Without something to hold the page in place, your other hand will have to accept the job of holding the paper down while writing. I personally is biased toward the wirebound method. What do you like and why?
  12. Hi Everyone! I began bookbinding not very long ago, because I want my journals to look the same from year to year, something you can't always do when relying on commercial products... plus, I can get a better quality item for far less $$, and instead of "close enough", I get exactly what I want. I've been looking for Clairefontaine loose paper (like you'd buy a package of printer paper; big block of loose sheets), but all I've been able to find are finished products like notebooks, journals, pads, etc. Is anyone aware of a source of loose, bulk Clairefontaine paper? Or, failing that, of an available 'loose' paper that's closely comparable to Clairfontaine? Thanks... I usually have little trouble sniffing out what I'm looking for, but this time no such luck. Karl

    Clip Repair

Hello All, I'm very new to the world of fountain pens, and I just recenty got my first pen when my father found, and then gave me, his old Parker Maxima that he used in high school. The pen seems to be in good working order, but the clip is a bit loose. (Hopefully the photos illustrate this?) Does anybody have any suggestions about how to fix the clip in place? Glue seems like an obvious solution, but I'm not sure as to which one to use, etc. Many thanks!
