1. Now that it is possible to buy Pilot Plumix pens — which are fitted with broad-edged nibs — with different (F, M and nib widths, I bought a new set (as opposed to the old three-pack all fitted with M nibs; I still have another one of those sitting in a drawer unopened, although Amazon Australia don't seem to sell them any more), with the expectation that I might use them as nib donors for three new Prera pens, which have remained unopened for over a year because in themselves they aren't such interesting pens. This is how they write, compared to the standard round-tipped F and M nibs on the Pilot MR (or Prera, 78G, etc.): I now have a second set of those pens on order, after seeing the results!

3. I am lucky to know cool people. Azizah (Gourmet Pens) recently made this cool video of how she uses the Brass Folded Pens from Toronto Pen Company. I love the range of styles she gets with them. These pens are available at the online store linked in the footer (or here for convenience). I also made a couple of videos showing how the pens work: PENtastic Folded Pens Set PENtastic 3 in 1 Combination Pen
4. Beauty through Adversity - This thought kept echoing in my mind as I was carving this holder. Just like a hardship caused this Maple to become so uniquely beautiful, we too become stronger, better and uniquely beautiful through adversity. This holder celebrates the beauty in all of us as we face life's trials and tribulations. It is available in my online store along with a couple of others :-) - Salman
5. I'm in my 40s and am an artist wanting to learn calligraphy. I'm particularly interested in Copperplate. A recurrent issue is that I have a weird pen grip -- index and middle finger on the pen and thumb high -- a lateral quadrupod, from what I've been able to discover online. While I'm sure there are calligraphers who have the same grip but have found a way to work with it, I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to relearn holding my pen. Having the weird grip is making it difficult to fully enjoy some pens like the Lamy Safari. So has anyone completely changed their grip, and if so, how long did it take you to feel like you're as comfortable with the proper grip as your old one? My hand is currently feeling like a withered claw from practicing writing. It's only day one... thanks, Liora
6. Greetings, I was looking to buy a copy of Edward Johnston's famous book, and stumbled across this piece of information: it would seem that copies printed prior to the 1940s have 499 pages, whereas those published after the 1940s only have 434 pages. Does anyone know which of the pages might be missing in the shorter version? Could the text be more condensed? I am also aware that there are a couple of recent reprints, but from what I understand, these books are printed after photocopies of the original version. Has anyone compared the old with the new? Cheers!
7. Any other ruling pen, brush lettering folks out there. I realize this creeps beyond fountain pens, but I love comparing techniques, non-traditional styles. http://i61.tinypic.com/95z908.jpg Drawn letters, brush letters (Badda Badda) with dialogue lettering done with a broad fountain pen. http://33.media.tumblr.com/a231a0844d522ba6db68c5953cca5435/tumblr_nepp6ctiQ91qhjavzo1_r1_500.jpg I really like ruling pens for quick, expressive script. This from a demo I did for my students. SO! Anyone else out there doing quirky, non traditional hand lettering?

Ghost Sign In Stoke Newington

I just wanted to share this lovely Ghost Sign with you all. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2584/4082664308_35aef5c79c.jpg Walker Bros. Fount Pens by Ewan-M, on Flickr My partner went for a talk at St Bride Library ( http://www.stbride.org/ ) on ghost signs today, and showed me this sign which I thought was beautiful, and very appropriate for here.
9. Another amazing book I just aquired. It covers not only a lot of contemporary takes on calligraphy / lettering as well as script-style font design but also some chapters about current developments in non-latin writing systems such as arabic, indian and japanese. Some of the examples are totally applied and practical, others completely free and more veering towards art. There are some very insightful interviews with great typographers / calligraphers for example with Brody Neuenschwander (who did some famous movie projects with Peter Greenaway). Apart from that it is a very beautiful book, a joy to browse in and a great source for inspiration! Here are some more reviews – http://www.amazon.com/Hand-Type-Scripts-Hand-Lettering-Calligraphy/product-reviews/3899554493/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/3899554493/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 Besides the book contains one of my favourite quotes about calligraphy: "The one hard thing about calligraphy is that is does take a hell of a lot of practice" - said mexican designer Mr. Gabriel Martínez Meave. So true! Stefanie
