    Hi From India

Hi Everyone, I'm Arun from Bangalore, India. As to why I am here, its kind of a funny story. I was introduced to fountain pens back when I was in school almost more than a decade ago. At that time, although I loved the experience of using a fountain pen, I was kind of frustrated with the ink spilling here and there (mainly due to running around), and the low quality paper which caused bleeding. I reduced using fountain pens just so I could avoid all this hassle. Last week, all of a sudden I woke up one morning, felt like writing something using a fountain pen and when I realized I didn't have any, I decided to buy one immediately, placed an order for a Parker Vector CT and since that day I have been watching several videos and reading several articles about fountain pens in this forum, about inks, which pen to get next and things like that. Today I placed an order for a Kaweco Perkeo and I'm quite sure I'll be collecting a lot more fountain pens in the future and once again enjoy the experience of using a fountain pen. Cheers!
  2. I'll just paste my 'about me' from my profile. I'll not get on the soap box again, thanks to you all already -BIn the second half of my life, I'm using my time while retired/disabled after 23+ years as an Officer of Marines; CWO4 (Marine Gunner) and former Master Sergeant (prior to my Officer lobotomy) I stay busy when not swamped with stuff or just feeling down right horrible as a book reviewer, editor, and still continue analytical work for various people/businesses and occasionally still do consulting work for the Marine Corps and DoD ....... Advocating for Liberty and Veterans who suffer with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Severe Memory Impairment, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumas, and those with Crohn's Disease and Seizure Disorder. Of course too I may muster the courage to begin my Scale Models again but in addition to it all fight pain, tremor, and atrophy caused by neuropathy so bad that it maybe something best to just hang up and sell off. I've lost nearly every enjoyable skill and struggle with the idea of "doing it at all if I can't do so to the ability I once had". My 1965 Galaxie 500 LTD and Harley are gone as a result of the desires and memory issues so that and losing the opportunity of a second careeer sucks big time. I'm most busy with doctors appointments and maintaining my 118 year old house, my shop, ranting, retirement, and sometimes more... I spend most of the day in my library/study and may sometimes blog aside from my other stuff. My blog was begun right before my health, career, and entire life's direction was wildly changed, so though the page is 3+ years old, it is bare boned. My wonderfaul wife and partner of 21 years and I have 3 daughters (23, 20, & 10) and my service/seizure dog 'Reagan' (a Transylvania Hound).I have always insisted upon myself, my Marines, and my girls that their handwriting and deliverables that leave their desks are an example and often a first impression of their own character of professionalism and disciple. If it's your notes or your journal, that's one thinks; but if it is going to be seen by someone else it must be your best. I don't have extremely expensive pens, but what I have are of good quality and they are used extensively with my very rarely using a ball point pen or marker. Of course math/hand-analysis and editing markup is still often done with pencil, but everything aside is ink 'properly. I had to learn to read and write all over again after my brain injury, but I continue my journal that is now beginning it's 27th year and in addition I still write my wife of 21 years a love letter each day. I look forward to learning from each of you and pray I will be of assistance to many as well. I have much experience with different mediums aside from fountain pens to include, dip, technical pens, pastels, pencil, and alcohol pens with a solid background in what works and what doesn't with all brands, mediums, and surfaces while making sure the combination matches the intended purpose.Semper Fidelis, CWO4 Shannon Beaman USMC'Smooth is Fast, Fast is Smooth' Edited for errors only, content not altered. -B

    Greetings From South Korea

Hello everyone from South Korea! I have been a guest reader for some time now and finally got around to creating an account. My interest in fountain pens was sparked during my studies in France where I grew up and lived for 7 years. (So I can speak french if anyone out there has a hard time with English I can help - was an Interpreting soldier in the ROK Army) Now I am back in my country in South Korea, and I am actually struggling with the small market. It makes it hard to procure certain fountain pens and other 'pen peripheral' items. (like blotting paper) I own a Waterman Phileas/Fine nib and a Waterman Hemisphere/Fine nib (that actually turned into quite a medium nib)... My first trip to Japan, Fukuoka 2 weeks ago really sparked the 'collector/accumulator' inside me as I got my hands on 2 Iroshizuku ink bottles and a Sailor 1991 for a very reasonable(domestic) price. I also recently obtained a Pilot Falcon SF. I am looking forward to being part of this community!

    Namaste From India

Hello everyone, this is Rohan from India and I am a new member here( Of course, I'm posting in the Introductions, right?) I am a college student and hence writing is something I do every day. I am pretty new to the fountain pen scene, though I have been around them all my life, always found them too much of a hassle: spills and leaks and all, you know. But I decided to give them another shot after entering college, and man, I'm loving it. Hope to make new friends here, and have a merry time. Have a good day, folks.

    Cheers From Houston, Texas

Cheers from Houston, Texas! I'm glad to be here and I hope you can all teach me a thing or two (or a million!). I'm very new to the fountain pen world. I picked up calligraphy last year and was hooked. Calligraphy led to hoarding inks and now, fountain pens! My first order from Goulet Pens arrived today. I have used LAMY rollerballs for years and decided to pick up one of the petrol fine-nibbed fountain pens. I filled a converter with J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor and must say, I'm in love! I also ordered a Noodler's Ahab with the flex nib to have something like a calligraphy dip. As I dive in deeper, I'm seeing all of the beautiful pens from other companies. I think I would like to get a Monteverde Invicia in black chrome next and maybe a LAMY Al-Star, but I want to see how I do with the two I have now. I'm open to suggestions for next purchases, though! Any tips for beginners?
  6. Wanted to introduce myself as a new user of the board and a somewhat newbie to collecting new and vintage fountain pens. I currently own 7 pens but have more on their way, I started with buying a couple of kit pens, and a few vintage combos (fountain and pencil). I have been blessed to be able to acquire a couple of pelikans and a set of monte blanc pens that were a school girls during the 1940's from Germany (yes WWII era). I am a Social Studies teacher and coach and buy cheap fountain pens to share with my students from the local stationary stores... Jake

    Greetings From Chennai, India

Hello everyone! I'm Praneeth, from Chennai, India. I'm a freelance photographer and marketer. I've been an avid lurker on the fountain pen network for quite a while, however I wish to be an active participant in this wonderful community henceforth. My love for fountain pens surfaced during my time in primary school. More specifically, during the shift from using a pencil to handling a pen. My first fountain pen was an eye dropper manufactured by Camlin. It's been nearly two decades since, but I can never forget, my first pen was a scratchy mess. Being what it was - An inexpensive eyedropper, it was prone to abruptly leaking and blotting. Refilling it meant that my hands would remain blue for the rest of the day and if I was lucky, I wouldn't have any ink stains on my uniform. Underwhelmed by the experience, I switched to gel / rollerball pens for a while, for the sake of convenience. Thankfully, soon after my insipid experience, a fountain pen with a cartridge converter system caught my fancy during a routine visit to the stationery shop to replenish supplies. I still remember with great fondness, this pen was buttery smooth, the nib would just glide on paper with excellent feedback. Younger me found it most convinient to refill - just replace the cartridges and most importantly, the pen wouldn't blot / drip ink even when shook ardently - an integral quality for a pen used by a young student, I felt. With no second thoughts, I made the plunge and there was no looking back. Only a fountain pen would feel right in my hands, and hence I've never actively used any other kind of pen ever since. Initially lured by the comfort and utility of fountain pens, as the years passed, I began to appreciate them as individual creations. Over the years, I've come across numerable fountain pens, mostly inexpensive, mass produced ones however, I've been privileged to use some finer pens from more exotic brands during more recent times. As much as I hate to admit, I'm no longer in possession of my pens from my early years - lost a few of them, some had been destroyed beyond repair by my childhood self. A little more than a decade ago, I began collecting pens and these I guard with dear life. They have a lot of sentimental values to me, each with its own story. My current collection includes a Reynolds fountain pen (Unable to find the name), a couple of Parkers (Indian manufactured ones) a Jinhao 159, a few Schneiders and my most recent acquisition - The Pelikan M1000. I will share more pictures when time permits. I own a few bottles of ink, some inks worth mentioning - Diamine Syrah, Diamine Jade Green, J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor & Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine. Hope to hold onto this and only add more as the years pass. I apologise for the rather long introductory post, I just felt the urge to put it out there. Looking forward to network with other members and share experiences on Fountain Pen Network. Thank you for approving me! Regards, Praneeth

    Hi Everyone!

Hey Everyone! I just recently created my first account on the Fountain Pen Network. As you can probably tell, I am a very avid fountain pen enthusiast -- but I'm not afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I'm currently a junior in high school, and hope to major in astrophysics in college (particularly in particle cosmology). I'm really exited to be a part of the FPN community, and am looking forward to all that it entails! Regards, Raptorfan (that's not my actual name, in the off chance anyone was wondering)
  9. Enjoying a pen fetish since I can remember! Played around with calligraphy in my younger days, and after purchasing a set of Pilot Varsity disposable FPs (they're so smooth) in the spring of 2017 I caught the fountain pen bug. Next up was a Pilot MR Retro Pop Collection in turquoise. Researching ink and paper, I came across the Fountain Pen Network and I was hooked. Thank you to all who post reviews, tips, links, etc. Your honest feedback is a huge help when researching! Because of this group I was confident enough to make my first purchase on eBay, which was of course a fountain pen - Monteverde Invincia. Cheers!

    A Greek Among Geeks

Hello, My name is Nick and I have always been fascinated about fountain pens. I used deep pens from an early age simply because they were available in my family. I'm not an artist though and I can't say that I am a Calligrapher. I simply enjoy playing with the inks, the nibs and the paper. I am prone to writing in order to relax and I tend to like flexy nibs. I currently don't own an FP of more than 50euros but I hope to change that in the future. I wish I will find some Pen friends in here and mostly people that can answer questions about the market of FP and perhaps some locals.

    Hello, Hello!

Hi everyone, Nice to meet y'all. Call me Nori I am 27 y/o, I live in Georgia. I am a recent college graduate at 27, due to earlier adult life happenings. Just sailing through the post-college life, and figuring out what to do from there. It's exciting for me to find a forum where I can connect with fountain pen enthusiasts... Sadly none of my real life friends are into them or have any idea what they are. I discovered this new hobby of mine, when I first discovered planners called "Hobonichi Techo." I noticed from many viral pictures on the net that the paper used in these planners are made from "Tomoe River" Paper. Looking closer, I noticed interesting handwritings on TRP with a particularly standoff-ish ink--The slightly italic, organic writing with beautiful gradient inks. From my observation, they were called fountain pens and from there my mind exploded into this universe. I discovered the difference between dip pens and fountain pens (I thought they were the same thing, but nope) and really sunk into this hobby when I found Brian Goulet's YouTube Channel dedicated to Fountain Pen 101. I drank in all this information like an addict and here I am. I am eager to slowly build my fountain pen collection and ink collection. My first ever fountain pen was the Platinum Preppy, which is a great inexpensive starter pen... But one day, when I have the funds, I want the Visconti Homosapien... God, it's such a sexy fountain pen. When I say I love pens... I (bleep) love pens. I love pens of all kinds--gel pens with 0.7 or 0.5 point, super skinny point pens with 0.38, those felt tip pens everyone buys for their bullet journals, cheap retractable pens with pretty good ink flow that you can get 20 from a box... Omg. It's my porn. I love giving pens I love to my best friends and seeing their faces when they realize what a sweet-(bleep) pen it is. Ughhh... So yeah, this fountain pen hobby is just stepping up my pen addiction. Hahaha. No one in my life really understands my fascination, but hopefully some of y'all do. Anyways... Again, nice to meet y'all. I'm looking forward to great forum conversations, -Nori

    Newbie Here!

Hello fountain pen fans, I just recently joined the fountain pen community after purchasing a very basic Franklin Covey Freemont and a Pilot Metropolitan a couple of days ago. However, I have been a long time stationary addict for many years (I started with mechanical pencils). This network's pen guides and reviews have been phenomenal and undoubtedly launched my FP interest. I was hesitant at first to start using a fountain pen because I thought it was going to be messy and complicated. However, once i picked up a baseline fountain pen I immediately fell in love; the feel when writing with a fountain pen is an experience in itself. I can't wait to expand my collection. Currently, I have many different coloured inks being shipped to me and soon I will buy the Lamy Safari. Through this community I hope to expand my knowledge of fountain pens, expand my collection and become a contributing member to help others. Thanks Drew

    Salutations

Ahoy fountain pen lovers! My name is Rahul and I am a fountain pen lover from Assam, a quaint little state in the North Eastern part of India. I have followed fpn for quite a while now but have only officially joined today. As for my hobby, I used to write with FPs during my school days but I rediscovered the pleasure of writing with them again from last year. Ever since, I have become almost obsessed with them, sometimes spending the entire day browsing forums over next pens to invest in. I currently own a Pilot Metropolitan, a Kaweco Ice sport and some other non branded pens. As for my taste in pens, I generally prefer writing experience, then design, then beauty/style and finally, history behind the pen. Thank you and feel free to introduce yourselves.

    Welcome From Northern-Ish Virginia

Hi. I'm Maria and live near Woodbridge/Dale city. I came here to find other people who share an interest in using fountain pens. I am recently exploring going a bit more analog and improving my writing. So far I like the results of deliberate analog organization. I like giving my hand a break by writing with an instrument that feels like an extension of my hand. Fun fact, my one and only quality pen at the time, an Aurora, was stolen off a desk at a previous job a couple of years back.

    Hello All

I am pradeesh from Israel. I am new to fountain pens even though it intrigued me for a while. 2 months ago i started with my first fountain pen and a bottle of Ink. I have found great and useful information on fountain pen network and thank you all for creating an amazing forum full of information. My favourite Pens so far are Pelikan M805 with a Broad Nib and a Platinum 3776 with a Soft Fine nib. See you all around.

    Hello!

Hey y'all! I just recently got into the world of fountain pens and I found out that there's an entire network of people who have an addiction that I slowly am contracting! I started off with a Parker Sonnet that I got from Pen Chalet (a present from my wife, really), and have slowly started building my collection from there! How do y'all get started with your collections? -Charles

I have always been fascinated by pens, as a kid attending public school in NY, if you owned a Parker jotter pen, you owned the best. I am glad to have found this forum and look forward to visiting often.

    Hello From Massachusetts

Hello everyone, I'm new to fountain pens and while looking for information, came across this site. Right now I have just one pen (a Pilot Metropolitan) and two bottles of ink. I originally bought it meaning to use it for lineart in drawing (I'm not much of an artist, but I'm learning) but I also write stories, and I recently have realized that if I write my drafts by hand, I have a much easier time avoiding distractions than when I'm typing. So that is what its main use so far has been, and probably will continue to be. I have already decided that when I get a second fountain pen, I want something with a wider nib. I don't do calligraphy (...yet) but from looking around online, I really like the way wider nibs show off variation in the ink. (I can see myself eventually collecting ink more than pens) About myself: I live near Boston, and right now, most of my time is spent taking care of my one-year-old daughter. Other interests, when I have the time, include sewing (I make costumes for scifi/fantasy/anime conventions), Magic: the Gathering, and as I said before, writing and learning to draw/paint. Thank you all for having such a helpful and welcoming forum!

    Hello From Kassel

Good evening! On a recent vacation to Athens, Greece with my husband and friends, we discovered a really awesome stationery shop with a small but interesting and carefully curated selection of pens, notebooks, and other office supplies (The Paper Place). They had a Pelikan M205 in Amethyst in a display case, and being a huge fan of anything purple, it immediately caught my eye. At the time I wasn't willing to shell out €140 for a pen, but the nice experience in the shop stuck with me. When I got back home I had to look up the pen to see if I could find out what it was. Researching fountain pens rekindled the fascination I have had with them since I was a little girl. As a kid I searched high and low for a fountain pen (who knows how I got the idea in my head -- I don't remember) but the generic one I finally found at a drugstore in my Grandparent's little town in upstate NY didn't function well and was really just a big disappointment. Of course I ended up writing to the shop to inquire about the pen and ended up buying it (as well as their last bottle of Amethyst ink) even though I live in Germany, where I could have probably found a less expensive one. But I knew that pen would be the start of a collection, and it wouldn't have been the same if it weren't the one that caught my eye that day. Unfortunately I am now also understanding what it means to collect fountain pens -- there will always be the next pen that tickles my fancy and has to be part of my collection! For now my focus has been on Pelikan, Lamy and Pilot. In fact I just ordered a Vanishing Point in the Raden Galaxy finish after enjoying my Decimo so thoroughly. It feels weird to buy what could be my "holy grail" so early on in my collecting days, but I just couldn't resist. I have also tried out a Jinhao as well as a Hero 616 just for kicks. I take a lot of notes during the day in meetings at work, but my new hobby has also pushed me to get back into journaling, and I'm hoping I might even send off the occasional letter as well. It's all so much more pleasant with a nice writing utensil in hand! Now I just have to get better at rotating through the pens so that I don't ink up too many at once This forum has already been incredibly useful to me (the reviews are amazing and the wealth of information can't be beat -- there is an expert here for everything). Thanks for having me as a part of your community! (Also thanks for reading -- this got longer than expected...)

    Hi From South Texas

Hi -- I'm Chris from Texas and I've just recently started using fountain pens again -- I used to write with them in school many years ago! Actually, I started in January of this year (2017) by getting a Pilot Metropolitan and some ink samples -- and my interest took off in a big way after that. I'm finding that I almost never use anything but fountain pens now -- except for when I need to use a felt tip for something particular. I found this network last night when I goggled to find out why I was having some issues with a pen. It helped me so much to read that others had been thru the exact same thing -- and I decided to join here so I could learn even more and share my enthusiasm for fountain pens with like minded people. There is no one else in my "in person" life right now using fountain pens!!!! That's so sad ... I will have to change that..... My little collection of pens is growing and I am becoming much more picky about what I write with ... to .... there will be pens to share with family and friends!!!! At this point, my primary interest is inks! I enjoy being able to experiment with many shades of ink and I find it really fun to work with ink samples. I mean, of course it's all about the pens too but what draws me the most to the hobby is the ink. I write all the time in multiple notebooks and I take notes a lot for classes and for research and writing so there's always a pen in my hand ... but now I have control over the colors and properties of the ink I'm using -- which I absolutely love. So, that's it, that's me. I hope to get to know people and learn a lot here. I was very timid at first to try new things with my pens and ink -- but now I'm using ink syringes, ink samples and really learning how to keep things flowing!!! Sincerely, Chris

    Another Dutch Guy

Hi All, Well, I still like to make notes during meetings by hand, but have to travel a lot. Almost once a week I've to travel by plane and therefore mainly write with Rollers. Still during the time I received some nice fountain pens and always interested in those amazing nice limiteds. Especially from MontBlanc, Faber Castell and some of the Montegrappa brand. I got a new head of HRM and he has this amazing handwriting and autograph, which made me dive into this nice world again. At the moment brushing up my writing skills and on the look out for a two nice daily writers. Probably, will use first the once that were given to me. Although, I just ordered a nice Pilot Custom 74 demonstrator. :-) Already read some of the nice threads here and for the coming time will read some more. As at the moment I won't be able to bring great value as my knowledge is still very limited. Thanks for having me, Bidle

    Greetings,from Down Under.

I guess I have been around for a while but meh... Hi. I am Eric H,and I am 12 years old. 12. You read that right. Yeah. You did. I currently live in Sydney,Australia, and as you can imagine,I have an extensive collection of things that write. So many I can't count all of them... How I got interested with pens: One day, 6 years ago,I found a Montblanc 146 on my dad's desk. Having used pencils all my previous life,I was very interested in writing with a pen. I thought of it as something to prove that you are a 'big kid'. So,I grabbed the 146. It took me 10 minutes to uncap it because I didn't realize I had to unscrew... I did,and started writing. I held the pen by the section, actually,as I had seen my dad do it. The nib was smooth. Really smooth. So smooth that I was hooked. Smoother, much smoother than those cheap Staedtler pencils. Dad saw me,and he was excited. He was glad that I found a 'wholesome' hobby. And two days later,I ended up with my first 3 pens. A Lamy Safari in Fine,a stub Lamy Safari, and a Pilot Frixion 3 Wood. I was rather content with what I had (not knowing that my dad's 146 was dozens of times more expensive than my Safari),until,a year (or so) later,I saw one of my teachers use a 146. I asked him the price. $950 AUD... And that was when I realised that a whole world of pens was waiting for me to explore... My collection is now huge. My favourite pens are my Pilot Custom 743,Montblanc 149,Pilot Frixion 3 wood and the Pilot Justus 95. Pictures are below. Now,you may be wondering why the gaps are there. Those are the pens that are absent. My Lamy 2000,Lamy Safari in Fine (my first one,I eventually bought a red Safari in Medium),Pilot Custom 743, and my Parker Sonnet are absent pens. What happened to them? Lamy 2000: At Lamy for repairs. You probably read my frankly too critical post about that... Parker Sonnet: Stolen. At school, lots of things do. Someone nicked it from my desk. Pilot Custom 743: At Pilot for repairs. Bought from Dymocks, like my 2000. Pattern here? Lamy Safari in fine: Stolen, like my Sonnet. Bits of random information about me and/or my collection: I feel that Pelikan nibs are random in width, and the markings don't apply. My Pilot Frixion 3 Wood has been refilled 17 times. I don't mind Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, pistachios, and other foods that kids tend to hate. I despise cheese since all cheese to me smells like armpits... I have Chinese parents but I was born in Australia. Maybe more coming soon? Feel free to ask questions about me and my collection. Note: Please don't argue about anything on this post,it's just my opinion...

    +1 Hello From Boston, Ma

Hello to all from Greater Boston. I just wanted to say 'hi,' and also 'thank you' for all the useful and entertaining information, generally imparted with thoughtfulness and admirable wit. I announce myself a bit shamefacedly, as in truth I have been 'lurking' now for quite some time. My rationalization before today had been that, as a newbie, I never felt that I had an awful lot to add to the threads. But truthfully, I think shyness is more to the point. So, I'm actually not so much a newbie anymore, having grown up and come of age, as it were, here and on the Goulet website. This I was forced to admit to myself when, after two or three years in the hobby, my penventory exceeded 150, and my inkventory 70 bottles. So please accept this absurdly belated introduction. I hope to evolve myself into a slightly more prosocial mammal in coming months. - Bruce

    Just Saying Hi

Hello everyone As a fellow fountain pen enthusiast, I have been following the FPN for a while now (without my own account) and like reading reviews and discussions about fountain pens here. I am a beginner fountain pen enthusiast (although I have a lot of experience with Indian and Chinese fountain pens). When I say experience, what I mean is that when we were in school, there was a rule that everyone has to use a fountain pen to write their notes and homework. This ultimately meant that I have played around a lot with fountain pens and different kinds of available inks. However, I don't have too much of a formal education ( ) in the ins and outs of a fountain pen). I have a weird obsession with particular metals like titanium and sterling silver and have been on the lookout for fountain pens with titanium or solid silver body. I am also very fond of the different patterns and inscriptions in a fountain pen nib. I hope that everyone would start realizing the beauty of a fountain pen and the fun of writing with it.
