  1. Most stationary stores or pen stores in Bangalore do not seem to stock "Indian" FPs (they seem to sell a fair amount of Jinhao, Baoer, Pilot, Hero, etc.), I decided to check a few stores in Avenue Road today. It was quite unfortunate, as the stores that I was pointed to were shut today (I hope they were only having a really long lunch break and hadn't closed the stores!). When I did press a few storekeepers (only those which were manned by the gray haired men), they pulled out a few dusty boxes of the Click Ebonites and the Click demonstrators. My aim was to pick up a few ebonites or acrylics from one of the few older Indian manufacturers, I was quite surprised by my inability to find any of the other lovely pens discussed here on FPN. I guess I didn't ask the right questions or find the right stores today. However, I did stumple on this store called Meenakshi Stores run by one Mr. Krishna Murthy, who had a few Airmails. Unable to return empty handed, I succumbed and ended up paying Rs. 840 for the following for plastic, metal and acryclic Airmails. All of them seem to have the same Fine Airmail steel nibs with finned ebonite feed. I have just dipped them and used them so far, nothing more. Will review them soon. Given, this was a first time FP shopping attempt, can the more knowledgeable folk here chip in and let me know if I paid a premium for them? Does Airmail still manufacture these pens? Or are these new pens manufactured by a new entity under the Airmail brand? Or Are these pens just new old stock?
  2. I finally succumbed and bought one for myself. A nice email exchange with Mr. Kandan (on behalf of his father), made it easy for me to order the Thin Bamboo pen in Bakul finish from Ranga Pens. Given that I am only beginning to use fountain pens again, he was really helpful in helping me understand the options available and the best option for me. Based on suggestions from members here and his own email I decided to have the standard Wality medium steel nib in the pen. So far, the nib has been smooth and works without any skipping. The pen itself is an eyedropper style pen with a large ink capacity. It is a light pen and I have been using the pen unposted. There seems to be silicon grease or some form of stopping material near the ink-tank and the section of the pen to help avoid ink spills. The nib itself seemed to have been misaligned a little from the feed, some gentle pressure helped sort it out. Call me a sucker, but I love the quaint packaging that it comes in. It has been a long time since I got any mail with a cloth package and wax seals. Here are a few pictures of the pen, http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/100x180xSeals.jpg.pagespeed.ic.ioMH6-R8qx.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/180x150xboxed.jpg.pagespeed.ic.gshuBGHIhp.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/200x120xunboxed.jpg.pagespeed.ic.1j5B7bwpOf.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/200x80xpenhorizontal.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Pd5gDr5pah.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/100x180xpencontop.jpg.pagespeed.ic.63gb7im9N1.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/200x125xlengthcomparison.jpg.pagespeed.ic.up9MSgxlNV.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/150x125xuncapped.jpg.pagespeed.ic.2JaZ2T1-84.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/150x100xfeeder.jpg.pagespeed.ic.wCt4HC4JY8.jpg http://blog.bharathpalavalli.com/images/200x110xrealigned.jpg.pagespeed.ic.0qBoRAlSq0.jpg Cross-posted on my blog. 4. Dear All I purchased a pen long time back on insistence of my wife, yeah there are certain things in life you cant say no to. The pen is Golden Dragon - "Jinhao 1200". I am actually very happy with the pen that i bought for Rs. 350 ( US $6) only thing that sometimes bothers me is the color but yeah it actually wants attention from people some positive some negative. But if you talk about the pen writing experience its a killer. Following is my handwritten review along with some images. The coverter supplied with the pen hold okay amount of ink not great but acceptable. Following are the images: Capped Pen with Clear Branding of Jinhao 1200 at the bottom of cap Dragon clip on the pen had two red small fake stones in the eyes of dragon which have come out after prolong use or maybe not glued properly. top of cap has nice logo or design two tone 18kgp nib writes excellent medium The bottom line is the pen for the price is a superb writer.

  6. Hello, I've been browsing FPN for a year now and finally decided get back to using fountain pens (and hence the new account and the post). My use and experience with foutnain pens is limited to the early use of the easily available Hero, Camlin pens at school in the early '90s (in India). Though I loved the idea of writing with ink and the use of fountain pens, the experience with these pens was not the greatest and drove me to use microtip pens very early on. Local stationary stores do not seem to stock these pens anymore and I've been looking at FPN to see where I could buy a good starter pen. Thanks to FPN and the very useful reviews I found ASA and their pens (hat tip: [member='arunura'], [member='hari317'] , and [member='a_m'] among others). I've shortlisted the Sheaffer 100 and Lamy Vista based on my requirements and availability in India at this point in time. I plan to buy either the Gama Kuyil or the Gama Eyas to accompany it. Here are my requirements and the criteria, Usage: Daily usage for notes (in meetings) or occasional writing. I fly frequently and would like to carry the pen too. Budget: Since I am starting out I would like to begin with budget of around 1500 - 2000 (~ $ 24 - $ 32) as I'm unsure about the experience from pens that might be available for a lower price (Based on the reviews here and on the subreddit on fountain pens). Out of the box experience: Given that I am only beginning to use fountain pens, I would like to reduce the amount of work the instrument requires out of the box for a good experience (given my budget). I'd like to avoid getting nibs replaced or grinding, etc. until I am comfortable with them. Paper: I'd like to be able to write on the paper I use regularily, that is handmade paper (I know that it is not the best for ink), Moleskine, and mostly regular Camlin paper. It is best if I can use both sides of the paper while I write. Wet/Dry: The one thing I liked with my limited experience was the wetness of the ink on the paper, though it might not be easy considering the paper I regularily use, I'd like a pen that can fall under a wet category. Nib: I'm not particular about whether it is a Fine, Medium or Broad. All my notes are in English (cursive) and with occasional sketches, so a Medium with some flex would be great! Here are a few questions, Does either the Sheaffer or the Lamy Vista come with a converter out of the box? Does anyone know if they leak if carried on the plane? Do either of these pens flex? Are there other options within my budget and needs that I might have missed? Are there any differences between the Gama Kuyil and the Gama Eyas? As I plan to use these on a daily basis, would they leak if carried around? Does anyone know where I could buy good cases in India for these pens? Thanks for the patience in reading a rather long post, flummoxed PS: I'm trying to reach ASA Pens to ask them the questions related to the Gama pens but haven't been very successful so far.

  8. I have two Regus Majestic piston fillers. One has an excess of lubricant in the piston area, which creates an ugly mess when the ink gets low and it can be seen. Can someone tell me how to clean it out, please.
  9. I have been meaning to get some celluloid pens from Guider Pen Works of Rajamundhry, India. I finally ordered and got these a few days back. However, this post is not about celluloid pens, but about a nice surprise I got. I ordered 2 celluloid pens and just for fun, I also ordered a Guider Baby pen in Yellow Acrylic. Expecting 3 pens in the box, imagine my surprise when out fell a fourth pen. At first, I was not even sure it was a pen because it was so TINY. But further examination revealed that not only was it a fountain pen, it was a fully functional eyedropper with a pretty good nib. I have named this pen the Guider Nano (for want of anything more creative) and here are some pics and comparisons with other small pens I have. Please excuse the picture quality - I had to make do with very average lighting. So, here is the Guider Nano with some of its contemporaries. From Top to Bottom Kaweco Sport, Guider Baby Acrylic, Guider Nano, Deccan Lilliput. By itself, the pen looks pretty good. Some measurements to give an idea of how these compare. Please take these as ballpark figures. I have tried my best to be accurate with the tools I have, but YMMV, so please excuse me in advance if someone has other figures. Though I think they should be in a similar range. Kaweco Sport: Length Capped = 106.1 mm. Weight Un-inked 13.00 gms (with the clip) Deccan Lilliput: Length Capped = 110.5 mm. Weight Un-inked 13.90 gms Guider Baby Acrylic: Length Capped = 103.6 mm. Weight Un-inked 11.29 gms Guider Nano: Length Capped = 78.5 mm. Weight Un-inked 4.71 gms As you can see, it is a really tiny pen. Kaweco Sport Deccan Lilliput Guider Baby Acrylic Here is the Guider Nano: Then, just for fun, I decided to compare this pen to two absolutely huge pens - The Varuna Gajendra and the Gama Supreme White Acrylic. Measurements. The Gama and Varuna lengths were visually taken with a plastic scale as the sizes were beyond the scope of my callipers. Gama Supreme Acrylic: Length Capped = 164 mm. Weight Un-inked 40.08 gms Varuna Gajendra: Length Capped = 178 mm. Weight Un-inked 41.02 gms I must really thank Shri Lakshmana Rao of Guider pens for sending me this tiny, but unique surprise package. In my experience, this is the tiniest functioning pen that I have seen and used. I would love to hear from others about such tiny pens. Has anyone else used such a tiny pen, or maybe something even tinier? I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed posting it. Cheers Sudhir
  10. So, I did not know where else to post this, so i will post it here. I yesterday Got a bunch of pens, Some of them in ebonite. Was very happy to have these good pens. So i filled them up in the night, Checked them and kept them in my carry case for the next day. I inked the two Kim&co. pens with black and blue inks and that is what i use the most in office. came to office today. Took out the black pen and well it didn't write, gave it a tap, shook it.... and still nothing, so i open up the pen and to my surprise the pen is empty. Then I picked up the blue pen because i needed to take notes, and it doesn't write as well, Shook it, tapped it, failed to write, then opened that too and whooooaaa..... its empty too. Two fully filled ED, with decent capacity, completely dry overnight with no signs of leakage whatsoever. So out of surprise i took out my Ratnam and sons and Gama (filled at the same time, and both ebonite as well) to see if they were dry too..... but to my surprise they were still full. So, i suppose the Kim's i have are just thirsty and drank up all my ink..... Just wanted to share this experience to see if someone else has had such a thing happening to their pens. Sorry to make it so dramatic... Its more fun to write this way.... Let me know what you people think might have happened. And If you have had such experience.

India Ink In A Fountain Pen

Hi Everyone, I recently purchased some black india ink for dip nibs. I love it, but the dip nibs not so much. Since I really like how it looks I was wondering if I could put it into a fountain pen. I know if I left it there it would likely cause problems, but I was wondering if anyone else has done this and gotten away with it? If so, any tricks anyone can share? such as how to clean it out of the pen? would it dissolve in alcohol ect? If not does anyone know a safe black ink that has that nice shine? Also, I have a pen I would be willing to sacrifice to experimentation. Cheers, Bevan

    Nibmeister In India

Does any one have any idea, where can I find a nibmeister in India? I recently bought a Lamy Safari (my first fountain pen). Although it has an extra fine nib, it is still not fine enough for my liking(I have been using ball point pens all my life). I've come to know about several sites like mike-it-work but I would like to find some in India itself. Please help.

Jo Wo Nibs, Now In India

I have heard from ASApens.in that they are representing JoWo nibs in India. I believe they have received their first lot of nibs and are in the process of listing them on their website. In the meanwhile, I have been told by them that they are accepting enquiries back channel. This is good news for both Indian pen manufacturers and Indian pen buyers in my view, who had no option but face import previously. Best Hari

    The Gama Saral

The Gem and Company in Chennai, India is a pen shop in business for over 80 years now. In addition to selling third party pens, this shop manufactures and sells their in house fountain pens under the brand name Gama. Previously, I have documented their following models: Supreme part 1 Supreme Part 2 Kuyil Padpad/Raja Kambar part 1 Kambar part 2 In addition, some information about the shop itself can be found in the following links: Visit report 2008 Visit report 2014 This Gama "Gundu pena" (fat pen) was always popular among the FP user folks of Chennai, in recent times the owner of gem and co and their dealer ASApens.in have been very active in bringing out a slew of new models to fit varying hands, tastes and sizes. The Saral is, I think, their latest offering. Saral means "easy" in Hindi. It also can mean "simple" depending on the usage. I think translated into English, the Saral would be called "The Gama Simpleton". My first impression was "simple form, functional pen". Cylindrical cap, functional spring steel ball clip, simple tapered barrel to allow the cap to be posted, barrel length is sufficient to use unposted, ebonite for keeping the weight light, and hard wearing brushed finish. The dimensions of the pen are as under: Capped: 148mm Uncapped: 132mm(including nib length) Barrel dia:14mm Cap dia: 15.6mm Section dia: 12.5mm at barrel threads tapering to 11mm just before the nib base flare. Posted: 177mm The pens came to me without the nib and feed fitted, I wanted to do my own fitting to it since I rarely use the stock nibs anyway. I did not know what will arrive in the post, when the Saral was described to me. However when I received these pens on Friday, I found that I like the simple lines of this pen very much, enough to consider making me carry one as the sole carry on the two day out of town trip that I will go on Monday morning. Cheers! Hari
  16. Is someone using one of the following Indian pen? I just found them at the New Dheli airport and without realizing they are made in India, bought them as presents to my brother and his girlfriend (both are lawyers). May be too late, but if there are any negatives, I would like to know so that I can warn them. Thanks in advance.

    Hello :)

Hi, I'm very excited to say my first hello I'm from Calcutta, India and recently switched my city to Delhi. Professionaly I'm a director of design and a fashion editorial photographer by choice. I have been using fountain pens since I was kid, I remember, the first fountain pen I've ever used is a Parker 51. Now, I'm a Sailor man. Three things I can't live without; my Sailor Sapporo, my Moleskine and my Winsor & Newton watercolour. Greeting, AR

  19. Below is a hand-written review of my newest acquisition. This is an ebonite pen from Gem and Co., Chennai, India, called Gama Kuyil, purchased from ASA pens, Chennai, India. [a copy of this review will be posted to fpensnme.blogspot.in]. Size comparison with Ranga Handmade Duofold and Jinhao (or Bulow) X450.
  20. Looking for a little advice on journals. I've seen quite a few leather bound journals on ebay and a few I have liked very much and been tempted to buy. However, most of the ones I liked said the paper was Indian made from cloth (cottons?). I'm wondering if anyone has used any of this type of paper and if they would be happy to share their experience. I resisted buying on the basis that the paper might feel scratchy and bleed or feather very considerably, but maybe I have misunderstood the 'cloth' aspect. Thanks
  21. Hi guys, So, I was searching for universal converters for using with my Schneider Base and Waterman HD. ( Bought Lamy's separately coz I know it won't fit ) The only option I am getting is parker's converter. (http://www.esupply.in/products/parker-quink-ink-converter) As far as my limited knowledge goes, parkers fit only auroras and then too play foul sometimes. So, my question to my fellow FPNers is,where do I find the universal type in India ? Also what type of converter will I be needing with Sheaffer NoNonsense and Pilot ? And where to buy them ? Don't have the pilot at my hand yet, but here's the link.. (http://www.jabong.com/pilot-Black-Fountain-Pen-358498.html)
  22. While going through one of my pen storage folders, I came across this pen. I was overcome by a wave of memories and was carried back nearly a decade... My first meeting with the Late Mr. Raju Mirchandani (we used to call him Rajubhai), how he had warmly welcomed me, an ordinary pen enthusiast, to his factory and offices just because I had expressed a desire to see how the pens are made. He was a true gentleman, respected by all he came in contact with and a treasure trove of knowledge about pens and the industry, he was the driving and thinking force behind Airmail/Wality in those days. The Wality 52OD was one of their premier piston filled export pens in those days and I got the chance to buy one. Here is the pen. The 52OD(Overlay design) is a piston pen that was injection molded, with a satin gold plated finish over the trims and a gold plated cast overlay over the cap tube. It looks lovely and very Indian. http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8933.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8934.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8938.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8939.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8940.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8941.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8942.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8943.jpg The special 2 tone medium nib: http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8944.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8945.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8946.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t543/hari_317/Wality52OD/IMG_8947.jpg Cheers! 23. Hi fiends, Here is a dip pen made by Kim and Co. I have not seen a dip pen before. No cap, no feed. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3735/10606730965_f0d6585374.jpg 20131101_161556 by mohancv, on Flickr http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5495/10606724435_d312d56871.jpg 20131101_161633 by mohancv, on Flickr Once dipped in ink remains on a curvature under the nib. At least two or three lines can be written before ink finishes of. And may be more if I am getting an ink formulated for dip pens. On nib it is written as 456 MACNEVAN & CAMERON GOLD WING BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5539/10606729164_01fee5ce4e.jpg 20131101_161612 by mohancv, on Flickr Any idea about this nib? Kim people told that this nib is at least 50-60 years old. Thanks, Mohan.
  24. Hello All !! I'm looking to buy a Varuna Gajendra in India, I'm located in Mumbai. Would someone be able to tell me how to order one in Mumbai? Thank you !!
  25. WDP4BAAZ has already reviewed this pen here. A kind FPN member decided that I must have this pen and sent me one. I received the pen today. Arihant literally means "the vanquisher of enemies". The pen is heavily influenced by the Pelikan. It is a piston filler and features a beak clip. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8878.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8879.jpg The clip: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8882.jpg The cap imprint: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8883.jpg This company has taken the trouble to get nibs made with their name on it, better than slapping on a generic nib in my view. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8884.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8885.jpg Ebonite feeder: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8886.jpg I found the piston action very smooth, it appears to have been lubricated with silicone grease, also i can see three lips in the seal: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8887.jpg The piston threads: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8888.jpg Comparing with a Pelikan M405: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8881.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8880.jpg Writing: The pen writes quite well. Nice wet line Fine point not butter smooth but pleasant with some feedback. No tuning done to nib. Customary writing sample: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/ArihantPiston/IMG_8889.jpg I am not aware of the cost since the pen was a gift, but I expect that it should be in line with other Indian student pens meaning less than 2-3USD in retail. The chrome plated cap and the cap finial are nice touches. I hope you enjoyed this review. Regards, Hari
