  1. ...as the title suggests. This was a generative writing exercise we had in English class back in October, and today I thought I'd do a rewrite of it to see the change in my handwriting ever since I started using fountain pens. These were both done at fairly rapid speeds, and so therefore may not be the best in terms of legibility. Nevertheless, IMO, my handwriting looks nicer now; it's more relaxed & refined. Thoughts?
  2. Aloha Everyone. This is my first writing sample. Does anyone know what style it is? How can I improve? What style or method should I practice to improve it? Thank you, jim
  3. I am 20 years old, a left handed writer, and new to the world of fountain pens. I taught myself cursive when I was in the 7th grade, because before then my penmanship was absolutely terrible, and schools in the U.S. do not teach it past the 2nd grade. For a very long time I have admired the beauty of Spencerian script, yet I am very apprehensive to even attempt to learn it because of my handedness. Normally I am a hooker, like most left handers, but I do not view that as practical for a script that emphasizes whole arm movement. I am trying to become a sort of underhanded writer, and am doing the push-pull exercises as described in the book "Modern Business Penmanship" on IAMPETH.com. The trouble is, I don't really know what I am doing right, nor do I know what I am doing wrong. I have attached an image below of my grip and the angle at which I have the paper. Is this grip feasible for the script? Is there anything I could do better? Please let me know.
  4. Greetings, I will start by saying that I have dyspraxia so my writing will never be perfect... I have trouble with my co-ordination, to the point that I have been known to bounce off of a wall while walking down a perfectly straight and level corridor. Anyway, I have attached two files showing both a before and after sample of my handwriting... I know I still need to work on consistency, and perhaps spacing, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or tips Original hand and new sample one (Platinum preppy in Fine with Platinum black cartridge in a Leuchtturm 1917 notebook) New sample two (Levenger L-Tech 3.0 in Fine with Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher in the same notebook) Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
  5. I'm not really sure what I need to do/change to improve my handwriting. Specifically that of my left hand. It's always been decently legible, just not 'nice'-looking. For a short background on why, I was switched back in elementary school, and by the time I had a teacher that would let me write left-handed (or probably--didn't try!) I couldn't write fast enough with that hand to take notes/etc. So, samples: If not obvious, the smoother-looking samples were done with my right hand--the second and third blocks. The first and fourth block were done with my left hand (and, yikes, sorry about that first sentence! gonna blame it on being a new pen I haven't written much with--it just glides on the paper, which I'm not at all accustomed to!). Anyway, how do I make my left-handed writing look nicer/smoother/more natural? I don't really care if it looks anything like my right hand, but it's the only thing I really have to compare it to (or to emulate)...which might not be a good thing! But what is the best way to do that? Just writing hasn't done it (in the past/last time about three years ago, and that was using--primarily--ballpoints to practice with...), although it did improve my writing speed a little. I've held off further practice because I've long wanted to see if a fountain pen would be different (answer: yes, pretty sure it is), and I'd also like to practice better/actually make progress, if that makes sense? Would just continuing to write now work/should I start there? Or would it be better to learn something/start over? But if so, what? Anything look like it would be a good fit? Anything particularly good/bad? So, yeah...help? Tips? Suggestions?
  6. For the past few months, I've been working on improving my handwriting. I've always written a lot, when at uni, for example, and developed an unruly scrawl. Unfortunately, my scanner won't work with this computer, so I can't show you examples; generally I had shortened versions of letters, such as a weird half-g, and the general impression that a spider had crawled over my page. The model for my recent attempts at improvement came from the book, "Teach Yourself: Improve Your Handwriting," but I feel I've gone as far as this book can take me, and I'm still not satisfied. There is a youtube pen and ink reviewer called 'The Pen Pixie' who has the style of writing to which I aspire. This vid shows examples of her hand, note that she doesn't begin writing until 10mins into the vid so you can just skip to then: I'm not keen on the way she writes her 'b' or 'f', but the general style is nice. Can you recommend any other books which will take me further in my handwriting journey please? Or a particular script which it might be useful for me to focus upon? Thank you, Catherine
  7. Hi all, First of all I would like to say that I am incredibly impressed by a lot of the various handwriting I see on this site. I am a product of the increased digitalisation of everything in that I am practically unable to write by hand in a manner that is legible to anyone but myself, and having recently been given a rather nice Mont Blanc ballpoint pen I feel obliged to put the time in to learn how use it properly. I have been looking for a simple but nice looking font such as perhaps Italic #4 to adopt, but find that such styles are better suited to fountain pens. What are your recomendations for a complete novice with a ballpoint pen? (Appologies if this type of thread is too common around here)
  8. Hello, I have been trying to improve my handwriting in the past several weeks. Despite my best effort, my handwriting still looks crappy and it is not quite what I wanted. So I would like to get feedback as well as pointers what I need to do to improve. Attached is a sample of my handwriting. Thank you. Henry
  9. As I already explained in my introduction post here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/262104-hello-from-the-netherlands/ I've come to this forum hoping that it will help me to improve my handwriting. And as a picture can say more than a 1000 words, this is a sample of my handwriting from when I started on this quest of self improvement: http://gruffalo.mooo.com/web/forum_pics/20140301_140219_small.jpg As you can see, improvement is desperately needed. And to make matters worse, in this sample I was really trying to make it look not as bad as usual. The sample was written with a company-issued ballpoint pen (as that was my go-to pen at the time). Pretty bad huh? As described above, after that, I started writing with fountain pen, for a month I took all my notes at work by hand instead of digital. But haven't actively tried to change the way I write. Just by changing the pen I use and simply writing more, in a month time I went from the above to this: http://gruffalo.mooo.com/web/forum_pics/20140301_140233_small.jpg Still pretty terrible, but a slight improvement can be seen. At least enough to motivate me to keep up trying to improve myself. Any advice will be appreciated
