  1. I am considering to acquire a Ratnamson pen. Among their pens, the model #21 is one with a hooded nib. It seems unique as an ebonite pen with a hooded nib. It also comes in 3 sizes. On searching previous posts, I do not see much reviews or enthusiasm about this model of pen in this forum. Has anybody used this pen? What are your experiences? Are there any other Indian pen manufacturers that offer pens with hooded nib?
  2. My girlfriend has one of those purple "retro-pop" Pilot Metros with a transplanted 1.1 stub nib from a Plumix. She keeps complaining that it's "leaking," which seems to mean that when she uncaps it to use it there's ink all over the section, so she gets inky fingers. I've inspected it fairly closely over the course of several weeks and I can't find anything wrong with it - no cracks in the section, the nib/feed is sitting properly, I've swapped out a couple of different cartridges / converters, etc., all the usual suspects. I have noticed on my own two Metros that a substantial quantity of ink appears to pool under the hood of the nib, sometimes even working its way around to the under side of the feed. If you give either pen a pretty good shake ink will come splashing out and splatter all over your paper. I realize that fountain pens should, generally, be treated gently. However, my other similarly priced pens do not exhibit this behavior - I have a Platinum Plaisir (F), a Kaweco Classic Sport (1.1 stub), and a Parker Urban (M) inked up in daily use and they do not splatter when shook. My suspicion is that there is something about the design of the Metro that leads to this ink pool forming (since I observe it in all three of our pens) and that in my girlfriend's case, living as it does in the pen-loop of her padfolio, at various points throughout the day her pen is sometimes jostled, leading to ink from the pool spraying all over the interior of the cap. I know this is a cheap pen, but she really loves it, and I would like to make it useable for her, if I can. Has anyone else observed this phenomenon or come up with a way to solve it? Thanks! - N
  3. Hi everyone, I thought I would post here about my very first FP adventure. I own a few Parker 21's (not sure if Mark I or II, but definitely non-Supers and Supers) and try to use only the ones in worse condition, (admittedly my one and only 61 is on my desk at home). I used to carry my 51 until I found out how valuable it was and it is now in my drawer. I decided to fix a particular 21 Super with a broken nib using another 21 Super as a donor, the latter having a good F nib but a cracked hood in three places. It was leaking so much ink it was impossible to use (grey hood in the photo attached). I should have really come here first, alas I just went my own way and after reading up a bit I started looking for stuff like shellac, section pliers, nibs etc and came across Pendemonium. I wrote to them and they very kindly gave me excellent advice on what to do - and not to do. In particular, after using a hot water bath to remove the hood on both units, replacing the nib and screwing the hood back on it would consistently leak around the clutch ring. I then watched a few more pen repair videos and realised hoods are usually shellacked back on. I thought I would need to do that, but Pendemonium suggested I use pure silicone grease as 21 hoods are notoriously fragile. I was about to buy grease but realised I have a small tub with watch grade grease I have been using to seal watch back covers for years and decided to use it. I had already placed the nib in the right angle before screwing the hood back on. However after applying some grease with a brush the hood would screw back on further than before when no grease was used, so I readjusted the nib. All seemed to be well until I realised the pen was leaking because the hood had developed a crack after screwing it back on! Turns out the grease lubricated the thread so the hood screwing further up, more pressure was actually applied to it so it cracked. When I was younger I used to fix 21 hood cracks with glue and was mostly successful, of course results used to be aesthetically unpleasant. I already had another 21 Super with a cracked hood in two places which I had 'fixed' by carefully cellotaping the crack and the 'fix' had lasted for over a year so went and cellotaped the newly fixed 21 Super. So far so good, no leaks at all, so much so I will take it on a two hour flight next week. I wonder if I can buy NOS Parker 21 Super and non-super hoods from anyone? Those are the only bits that need replacing on my dodgy 21's (I did buy a few sacs a few months ago thinking I would need to replace those but I have not needed to). Many thanks for any ideas and for going through my long post.

Parker 51 Mk1 Section Types Question

Hi Everyone, I've been trying to find a straight answer on this but have been unsuccessful. I need to replace the damaged hoods on a couple of my 1950s aerometric Parker 51s, but don't know whether to get the "recessed" hoods which have space inside for an o-ring or the non-recessed ones which simply have threading. Does it matter which kind? Do you have to replace a hood with the same type that was originally on the pen? I'm hoping it doesn't matter, because I'd rather not take the pen apart to find out what kind it has. Thanks for your help!
  5. I've been reading many helpful reviews here on FPN as I get on my collecting journal, this is the first time I'm posting with a question. Anyone have experience with the Hero 100 "Emperor" 2016 model?, as shown in this ebay posting: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-Model-Hero-Emperor-100-Fountain-Pen-12K-Gold-Fine-Nib-With-Box-/331719526737?hash=item4d3c064951:g:nswAAOSwAKxWWcfJ I know that the standard Hero 100's Achilles heel is the plastic hood, which can crack, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with the 2016 model's exposed nib. Also this is a converter pen, which might (?) prolong the longevity. Some other questions for anyone who currently own the 2016 Emperor model: What material is the barrel made of? What about the grip section? Is there any Chinese writing on the pen? pictures just show Hero engraved on a bronze-like settingNib: is it really 12K gold? If so, how do they achieve the 2-tone effect? Is nib replaceable? Some measurements (length, weight) would be nice. A wrting sample is gravy. Thanks!

    Suspicious Parker...maybe?

Alright, I purchased a pen this past weekend at the local flea market. It has a cap that says Parker around the very bottom, but the clip isn't an arrow. the body is similar to a '51 (from what i know), but there is a large brass band on the body, perhaps a home fix for cracked threads? Cap fits well. Very comfortable in the hand. Anyone have any ideas as I have none! There is no marking on the pen whatsoever, the nib is silver in color and the filling system is a bulb squeezer setup, stating Parker... Here are a couple of snaps of this odd pen. you can see the brass band on the body, PEN IN THE BACK IS THE ABOVE MENTIONED PEN... But......it cost me $1. The sack is viable and it even has a lovely bluish grey color ink in it! Best part....it writes like a dream with a wonderful line!!! Any information would be helpful and very much appreciated. (The other capless body has a really cool nib, but doubt it's a Parker and it, too, has no markings!) Thank you!

    Problems With A Picasso 917

I have a Picasso 917 that I've only used for a short period of time but several problems have developed with it. It's not a common item, but there are a few reviews here and there on FPN, hopefully someone has experience with it. Firstly, shortly after beginning to use it, I noticed what I though were scratches on the "hood" section of the pen. However, every once in awhile, I would notice small amounts of some transparent material flaking off of the pen, after which the degree of "scratching" would seem to decrease. This leads me to believe that I'm not seeing scratches in the pen itself but cracks in some film or something that covers that portion of the pen. I tried to manually remove this "film" completely to improve appearances but this has proven impossible so far. Does anyone know what this material is and how i can remove what's left of it? Secondly, while I was cleaning out the pen today, I noticed that the paper I was wiping it with was drawing ink out from the seam between the hood and grip, meaning there is a leak there. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove and reattach the hood like you can with the P51? Thanks.

    Perplexed By Arrow-Less Parker 61

Hi all, I've just taken delivery of a Rage Red Parker 61, made in England, with capillary filler unit and glorious rainbow cap. It has no arrow - but also, no space for the arrow. The hood is completely smooth. The hood colour matches the barrel perfectly. Was there an arrowless variant?
  9. I'd been cleaning out a Parker 21 Super and noticed the hood started to unscrew. I'm thinking "Oh, I didn't know that". Seeing inky gunk I run some water over the threads. "Let's unscrew it all the way". OK, so it comes off easily. The collector unit with feed and nib seem relatively clean, so I rinse off the rest of any old inky residue from the threads. Of course now when I screw the hood back on, to get it snug up against the clutch ring it turns too far so the hood tip overshoots the nib so they're not aligned. If I leave them aligned, the hood isn't on tight enough to not turn when you grip it. So what's the correct solution here? Can the nib be turned so it'll line up with the tip of the hood? Or is there something else? Thanks gang!

    Parker 21 Dripping Ink.. Solutions?

Hi all, I'm a little new to Parker pens, after only having a 45 and a 51 for a few months now (loving them both). I recently purchased a 21 on eBay. The thing writes fantastic, but there seems to be way too much space between the top of the nib and the bottom of the hood, allowing ink to pool up in the space and drip out out of the tip when I move the pen suddenly. It's also dripping ink into the cap so when I uncap it and try to write, I get ink all over my hands. I've flushed the pen pretty well and there doesn't seem to be any leaks anywhere. Is there a way to close the gap between the nib and the hood? Is my pen warped in some way? I've included a picture of what I'm talking about. Thanks guys. -Alex
  11. Hi all, I've been wondering about the Hero 616. Does anyone know if the feed/collector system is the same for the 616 as that on the Parker 51? Just curious is all... Thanks, Badger

    Parker 51 Hood Too Tight

After having just bought my first Parker 51 (Aerometric), I noticed flow issues from the second I first used it. After a thorough cleaning, I realized that the flow problem had to do with the hood of the pen closing the tines of the nib. Does anyone know of a good way to make the hood fit less tightly? (Preferably without having to apply heat) Thanks in advance!
