Help! How do I restore this pen?
collectorofmanythings posted a topic in Fountain & Dip Pens - First Stop
I just impulsively got my first vintage pen, as well as my first pen needing restoration, at an antique store a few hours ago. But, I have absolutely no clue how to restore it. When I opened it, the sac was absolutely dust and the metal pressure bar fell out in two pieces. I expected the sac to be destroyed, but not the pressure bar! So, could anyone please make a step-by-step instructions for how to restore it, as well as what I will need and where to buy it? It would be much appreciated! Thank you! -

Recommendations for a warm medium-dark brown ink!
collectorofmanythings posted a topic in Inky Thoughts
Hello! Unfortunately I can’t seem to find an ink that makes me completely happy. I would like a warm medium-dark brown ink, but that doesn’t have an olive-y look and has good shading. Noodler’s Walnut has a purplish undertone, Jacques Herbin Terre D’Ombre is too olive-y and on Apica paper it is so dark. Herbin Lie de Thé is a little too light, and Diamine Chocolate Brown is just a little bit too dark. I know this is very specific, but do any of you have recommendations? I am not sure if this is the place to put this post, if not please say so. Thank you so much for your help! W. H. Major -
Hey guys! I bought a Lamy Al-Star from the official Lamy India site in April along with a Z50 black nib The pen writes really inconsistently, lots of hard starts, suddenly the ink stops flowing through the pen and it is generally very much annoying. The nib is the z50 Lamy black nib, which the pen came with. I had an extra nib(same one) which I have tried with this pen, but the same issue persists. I had washed it with water and a teeny tiny bit of dishwashing soap before inking it up(with Waterman Serenity Blue), considering that Lamy tests the product before shipping them to sellers. I am now at a complete loss as to what to do and thus I am now approaching you guys for help! I have used a Lamy Safari before this, and it has not given me a single issue out of the box.

Hello My Custom Heritage 92 FM Nib is not putting lines down the way I have come to expect from Pilot. I'm right handed. When making ellipses or lines from center out, there is nothing between 7 and 11 o'clock. When I write slowly then there is line variation but it is an extra extra fine line within that area. I have flushed the pen, made figure eights across a paper bag and finally, gently pressed the nib down on paper repeatedly for a few seconds at a time. I looked at the nib through full zoom with my phone's camera and don't notice anything damaged or out of place.

Conway Stewart Dandy Opinions
collectorofmanythings posted a topic in Fountain & Dip Pens - First Stop
Hello! I’ve been looking into possibly getting a modern Conway Stewart. I personally prefer gold nibs, and like the look of their Dandy model. I was wondering if any of you have any opinions on modern Conway Stewarts and/or this model. I haven’t seen really any review for it anywhere. Thanks, W. Major- 5 replies

Could I put a FPR 14k or Edison 18k nib in a Conklin Duragraph?
collectorofmanythings posted a topic in Of Nibs & Tines
Hello! I love the look of many Conklin pens, especially the Duragraph, and the steel JoWo nibs are just fine, but I would love to put a gold nib in it. I saw that both Edison and FPR make gold nibs (I especially like FPR because it is $20 cheaper) in the #6 size and was wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea or if anyone has ever tried it. Hello All: I am new to the fountain pen world, and have quickly ramped up my collection over the last year. I began with new pens, then discovered the joys (and sorrows) of vintage pen collecting. I've gotten some amazing deals and have been quite happy with my progress. I particularly love my numerous Esterbrooks with various nibs, a lovely little Arnold, Parkette, and several Sheaffer Lifetime Balance pens (all lever filled). As you can see, I don't have super high end pens, nor am I likely to, as I am on a budget. And then...I purchased some amazing pens, for great prices, but I think they will need restoring. All of these pens come from a collection that hasn't been cleaned since the 1990's. I assume they'll need work. But I am guessing the first step is to fill them with water to see if they leak? I've been afraid to touch them. They all LOOK amazing, no scratches that I can see. Someone loved them, collected them, and cared for them, before passing away in 2000 I don't know the first thing about restoration! I could use some help here. What do I need to buy, what's the best way to go about it all? Here are the pens I have purchased that likely need restoring (as well as the price I paid, which, as an aside, I'd like to know how well I may have done). All of the pens apparently "thread okay" Parker 51 ($50) Esterbrook Dollar pen with a 2048 nib ($41) Sheaffer Lifetime 51/2" black barrel with silver cap, gold trim, I think it's a piston filler system? ($79) Vintage Orienta German Matching nib ($14.50) I can include photos if it's helpful. But I wanted to get started with the conversation. Thanks to everyone in advance for the help.

Ordering Indian Pens into the U.K. Post-Brexit
Rewpert posted a topic in India & Subcontinent (Asia)
Hey All, I have a number of other hobbies that exist due to small-scale makers and sellers who're all having a heck of a time over the requirements of the new VAT Import Tax Laws introduced by the British. A good number of them are having to refuse to ship to buyers in the U.K. from now on due to the difficulties imposed by the new laws. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledgeable insights into how this will effect the purchasing of fountain pens from the likes of Ratnamson, ASA and Ranga from now on? Perhaps even, being proactive about it, is there anyone in this community of pen aficionados who has the required expertise and generosity of time to perhaps advise Indian pen makers on the new demands of trading with the British and how to best deal with them? Hope everyone is keeping well, 'Rewpert. P.S. - If we could all stay polite and keep politics out of this thread, that would be kind. The FPN is proving to be a quite safe haven from the discourse. There's plenty of room elsewhere on the internet where we can all each other 'Mopheads', 'Brexiteers', and 'Remoaners'. -
Hi! I've been drawing with fountain pens for a few years now! I have drawn with a Pilot Prera almost everyday since I got it in Japan in 2017. This morning I discovered it was missing. It lived a very good life, I haven't lost all hope that it will turn up. I hope it does, I love that pen and have drawn countless things with it. Its always with me. I must push on however, i'm tackling a white whale drawing and I figured what better to draw with than my grail pen. I have a Montegrappa Reminiscence that's been sitting unused for almost a year, I polish it and it has pen cleaner and a converter however the converter doesn't fit, so as well ascertaining knowledge from those more versed than myself, I'd like to figure out how to draw with my lovely pen. It's silver and hexagonal with no markings and amazing threads. I think it's a beauty. Anyway, Thank you for having me, i'm excited to be here! Soso

Hello, I’ve started journaling and have got myself a nice notebook, my husband bought me a v pilot cheapie for Christmas but I’d like something nicer and that I will use for years to come... the problem being I have no idea about fountain pens, I dipped my toes into researching but be quickly overwhelmed. I am hoping to gain more knowledge and suggestions, if I put my requirements, is this the right place to ask? • my budget it £100 all in and needs to include nibs/inks • I won’t be taking it out and about but will use it most days for jotting lists and writing my diary. • I think I would like a medium nib? And to use ink cartridges. • how it looks is important, i’m quite young and trendy! Don’t like silver but do like warm metals • i’m female and have small hands - I have no idea if this makes a difference? I tried the Wordsworth & black Erudite which I liked how it looked but it didn’t flow very well even after I flushed it out. Any pearls of wisdom or suggestions will be gratefully received, thank you in advice.

I am rather new to FPs and found this sonnet on eBay for a good price, it said 1998 model made in 2000. I expected the Cisele to be deeper and more pronounced, but being an older model maybe not... Any held is greatly appreciated.

I was dissassembling my Pelikan M800, because the piston wasnt smooth enough, so i lubricated it with silicon grease. Now i have the following problem: when i am upscrewing the piston, it sucks very little ink, just two or three drops. Also i noticed this, when flushing with plain water: while upturning of the piston, the water stays clean. But during the last two half-turns of the knob, an amount of the remaining ink shoots out of the nib, which gets visible in the water. Of course the ink should flow only in one way to the inside. Anyone ones whats going on and what i need to change? Seems like there is pressure building up, maybe behind the piston and then releasing through the feed?

Help! - Got An Old Waterman Fountain Pen And Don't Know Anything About It
AAS98 posted a topic in Waterman
Hello everybody! =) I write you all this message because I would need a bit of help - I got two Waterman fountain pen (I guess it is waterman as it is written on the nib), which I think are pretty old because I got them from my grandfather who used to buy many various fountain pens in second-hand. I absolutely LOVE them as they are EXACTLY the kind of touch/feedback I was looking for two years ago. Even thiner and even more flexible than my usual Platinum Century 3776 SF that I always use (special renewed thanks to the members who helped me then advising me to buy this pen by the way ) ; they are just GREAT. The problem I have is that I have no idea what they exactly are - I love fountain pens but know very few about them. So could one of you please help me identify them and tell me how I must take care of these new babies in order not to do any damage? (I will attach below, for both the pens, some photos and three links towards youtube unreferenced videos) The only clues I have are the following ones: - The inscription on the nib: "WATERMAN'S IDEAL | REG. U.S. | PAT. OFF" (Identical on both pens) - They probably works with a plunger (the little round thing on the side?) on which is engraved "Ideal" (have no idea about how a plunger pen works!) (identical on both pens) - They are probably old for the reason I wrote above, also because they have no clip on the cap (my father told me this occured only with old pens) - They are extremely pretty!! No relation with some other plastic fountain pens I could find in my grandfather's collection! - They both have flexible nibs. If you have any indication or information to give me, I would be extremely grateful!! I know that vintage flexible fountain pens are usually the best, I heard about the Waterman's ones, so when I saw these two pens I immediately tried their nibs (and loved them), though, I have no clue about their identity, nor their age. I also would like to ask how I could clean them entirely - I've been testing them just diving the nib in my usual Monteverde inks and removing gently the rest of ink with a cloth after use (I didn't mix the inks by the way, always removed the rest of the previous ink before testing another). I love them so much I would be horrified to harm them. I passed the nib of the smaller one under cold water to remove the ink I had used the first time, and could guess there was a rest of some blue ink inside (that doesn't appear when I'm writing though). I know I must not mix some inks with each others, in order not to clog the pen; is there any way I can clean these pens? Generally, can I use them with my Monteverde inks in the future? Is there anything special I should absolutely know about fountain pen care in this case? Could someone also explain me how a plunger fountain pen usually works...? The long pen also seems to have feed issues if I compare it to the small one, which feed "follows" me wathever I do (my favourite from the two, although the nibs seem identical). Below links and pictures. Thanks to all!! =) Photos on google drive (otherwise the display is not adapted): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12CtU2lKJjWmmb_CksVZynFBcyM5Te0UP?usp=sharing Links toward youtube: => => => (Sorry for the poor quality of the videos and the fact it is twisted, with no experience neither professionality and only one hand available I couldn't do anything better ^^ x) ) Inks used: Monteverde, Sapphire for the small one and Rose Noir for the long one. Thanks again! =)- 9 replies

I am trying to swap out my Leonardo Momento Zero Nib. The replacement nib I bought from the same seller is a complete collar + feed + nib unit in one. It is clearly screw type from the thread. I have tried like hell to screw it out but it seems stuck. I also very gently tried tugging as my Grande had the tug type, but I know the Leonardo Reg Momento Zero’s newer ones are screw in ( reinforced by fact that the replacement t I bought is also screw in) . Mine is the Positano with the number 1296 so may well be an older ‘ tug’ type. a) would anyone know how to unscrew a stuck nib? anyway to tell if my particular pen has screw in or friction. Would be good to know before I applied force pulling. c) any other suggestions. many thanks in advance. rajesh

Hello everyone, hope your weeks are off to a fine start. I come to you today with a very specific question: is my Montblanc 146 nib scraping its shoulders on the inside of my Conid Minimalistica’s cap? I usually use my Minimalisticas with Sailor nibs, but I have a lovely 146 nib, which I’ve had ground to a CSI, that I occasionally swap in. My question springs from the slightest scraping sensation I can feel when capping the pen fitted with the aforementioned nib. Now, both of my Conid’s are the all Delrin AVDA Phi versions, so I am unable to actually see if the nib and the inner cap are indeed making contact. I would hate to damage such a fine nib, so I am hoping someone out there with a clear capped Minimalistica is using a 146 nib and could answer my question. Thank you in advance. All the best to you and yours, Eli

I am relatively new to sheaffers and pen restoration in general. I have restored my friend's Sheaffer Imperial, but somehow when I got one for myself, the screw was either sealed in and rusted or just rusted in, but i could not even get a grip on it with a screwdriver as the screw had corroded and was stripped. I have limited tools and I don't plan on buying any online. I have also searched online but the suggestions require tools I don't posses or are too risky and I don't want to try. Any suggestions? Sorry I could not get a clear photo of the screw.
