  1. Hello! Please, I need your expertise to identify those 2 patterns. Need name of the edition (or pattern), maybe year and estimated price of sale (I may sell on eBay, not here). Thanks you very much for your concern (and sorry for my bad English).
  2. I used a dip nib with Stormy Grey this morning for the first time. Its a very very wet ink! It also feathered on Rhodia as a result. Based on experiments here https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/283167-glitteratipearlmica-and-e415/page-2 I trialled the Experiment 6 concentrate in J Herbin Stormy Grey. Here are the results. Pics of vial bases are just 1 min after shaking. In cases of direct comparison, the first pic is Stormy Grey a la naturel, the second pic is Stormy Grey x Xanthan concentrate blend. The Xanthan blend feathers less and offers far better gold distribution (where ink naturally pools from writing strokes, so does the gold, but it doesn't gold-dump like the original ink). Due to the viscosity change, you also get more letters out of one dip. Disclaimer: only use in a pen that can be fully dismantled for cleaning, and don't leave the blend in the pen unless you are ok with dry starts the next day or anything that might go wrong. Use at your own risk. Details of where the xanthan experiments are up to are in the linked thread. Dehydration tests beyond 57 hours haven't yet been done.
  3. I've been bitten by the fountain pen bug. It started when I lost my parker Jotter, and bought a Parker IM to replace it, and then continued to search for that perfect pen with the perfect feel. During my journey into the world of pens, I became convinced that if I find the right pen (Pelikan or TWSBI), the right paper (Rhodia or Ampad Gold Fiber), the right ink (J. Herbin Lierre Sauvage or Waterman Green), and right nib (still unknown), I'll become proficient in any foreign language I intend to study, maybe I'll even become a famous author....therefore I have a vested interest in finding the right answer to the following question: What nibs can I use on a TWSBI 580? I've noticed some people used nibs from Pelikan but there are no confirmed reports on the 580. I am not qualified to say whether I prefer gold nibs or not, but it'll be nice to know if TWSBI allows me to have options. The whole reason I like this pen is because it reminds me of a Honda CRX in "swappability".
  4. I have a Pelikan Demonstrator which came with the M200 Fine nib. This nib is steel with gold plate. I decided to see what the M400 nib would be like and ordered an Extra Fine nib knowing that gold nibs write slightly broader. I have been extremely disappointed to say the least. The 14c M400 EF nib writes like a broad nib. The lines are wide and it is annoying since it is suppose to be an EF nib. I contacted Chartpak and did a nib exchange and the replacement seems to be as broad. (which makes me sceptical if it was actually replaced). My question is, has anyone else had similar experiences and is the M400 EF 14c nib naturally a very broad EF? Pelikan nib writing comparison 2014.11.20.pdf

    Rohrer & Klingner - Alt-Goldgrün

Here's another of my favorites. It is incredibly difficult to capture this incredible ink in photos. Forgive the comparison to Verdigris; I have too few green inks. Reasonable care was taken to ensure color accuracy. The Warbler was done with Alt-Goldgrün, J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil and a touch of J. Herbin Terre de Feu in a Stillman and Birn Gamma sketchbook. Any resemblance between the ink swab and le decolletage (or any other anatomical feature) was purely accidental.
  6. Hey guys! So, I have 6 or 7 pens on the $30 range and of course, they dont come with a gold nib. I like drawing with my FP and I also like flex nibs. What is your experience with a gold nib? Do they right better or just different than steel? Any recommendations for a gold nib under 150? Best!

  8. Dear All I purchased a pen long time back on insistence of my wife, yeah there are certain things in life you cant say no to. The pen is Golden Dragon - "Jinhao 1200". I am actually very happy with the pen that i bought for Rs. 350 ( US $6) only thing that sometimes bothers me is the color but yeah it actually wants attention from people some positive some negative. But if you talk about the pen writing experience its a killer. Following is my handwritten review along with some images. The coverter supplied with the pen hold okay amount of ink not great but acceptable. Following are the images: Capped Pen with Clear Branding of Jinhao 1200 at the bottom of cap Dragon clip on the pen had two red small fake stones in the eyes of dragon which have come out after prolong use or maybe not glued properly. top of cap has nice logo or design two tone 18kgp nib writes excellent medium The bottom line is the pen for the price is a superb writer.
  9. I was recently looking through my stationary and stumbled across a fancy-looking pen. Since I have no clue what the pen is other than it's a ballpoint I was wondering if some kind person could identify it.. Here Are Some Details: It's mainly back with gold rings at the top and center, it has a gold tip and clip with a blue ocean-like background in the middle which then fades back into black. On the clip it reads L'Plume which I can only guess is the brand. But when I search that on the internet all I find is fountain pens by that brand and can't find any information or pictures of this pen... Thanks - Hope someone can help!

    Hello From Norfolk, England

I've had a Parker 65 fountain pen for more than 30 years (12ct rolled gold, English made) I recently aquired a matching ball pen and pencil for £20 each and almost instantly lost the ball pen. On looking for a replacement, I found a gold 180 fountain pen and ball pen set (made in the USA) for £40. Is this the beginning of the end? I seem to have paid a very reasonable price for the 180 set, looking at Ebay. I also have an elderly Platignum which actually writes very nicely. I can upload some pics if that would be of any interest.
  12. Hi everybody, I'm new here so I am not very sure whether I've placed this topic correctly. I hope I have, if not, please accept my apologies. Here goes the question: Would you choose a Kaweco Sport or a Hero 200? Provided (obviously) you have at least tried both. Both pens are pretty cheap (I know Jinhaos and Some Noodler's are cheaper). I've heard good things about both and I want to try some gold (or gold plate). Thanks a lot in advance for your attention. Cheers
  13. I visited a flea market a few days ago and bought a Cross Century set for $43. The price in my opinion was really good and the case and mechanical pencil was a bonus. After a little inspection I found some interesting markings on both of them. Both the fountain pen and the pencil were made in Ireland. I found on the net that if the fountain pen was made in Ireland it is from around 1982. Obviously they are the gold filled versions but there is not inscription like on my USA made ballpoint "-1/20 12kt gold filled". I checked the hallmarks used in Ireland but found nothing similar to these. On the pencil is written "CROSS , Made in Ireland , Plaque ORL" and a little hallmark with a T inside (see photo). The fountain pen has "CROSS , Made in Ireland" and a hallmark on the cap with a shield divided by an "X" with "A C T" (photo) also a similar hallmark is found on the nib "A C T Sté". Even if they seem like a set (in the inside of the box there is an inscription 14kt gold filled) they are diffirent: -Difference #1: the CROSS inscription on the fountain pen is in cursive and on the pencil is printer font -Difference #2: they have different colour pen is more pink and pencil more yellow My questions are: -What is the meaning of those hallmarks on the caps? -Were they from different sets? -Why is there no "gold filled" text on them? -The box is quite large, what was inside the box beside the pen and pencil? Any information, idea is greatly appreciated! Have a nice day!
  14. Hi, I'm am new to this forum but have been a regular follower with help to my small collection. I've just added to it today with the purchase of the 18ct Parker 51 pen/pencil set. After purchasing it, I took it to a pen expert who informed me that the pen looks exactly like a 51, with an authentic 51 nib/filler/ all plastic parts. One of the reasons I thought about before buying the set is that it didnt make since for it to be faked. The gold scrap would be about £300, and the costs to manufacture a one off gold fake would outnumber the cost that I paid for the pen. However, he informed me that the pen does not have the feathered arrow on the clip, this got me a bit worried that I would not get my money back. This got me worried that it could be a fake, hence I posted here. I would appreciate it if anyone could authentic this set. I must also note that the Clio is hall marked for 18ct gold, and there is also a mrk for E.M? Thanks, Nikita

Repairing A Gold Filled Metal Wahl

Hi, I have Gold Filled Wahl. I got this vintage pen and tried to disassemble it, but the section doesn't come off. I tried soaking in warm water and heating the section before trying to pull it, however, none of that worked. How do I disassemble this all metal pen? Is it harder to disassemble a fountain pen with metal sections?

    Parker 45 Pen Won't Flow

So recently my father gave me his old Parker 45 (with gold nib) as he thought I needed a "decent pen". Unfortunately though, despite many attempts- cold water, various cartridges,etc- we can't get it to flow very well. Admittedly, it's not the newest of pens and has sat unused in a drawer for the past few years. Whenever I try to use it it cuts out mid flow or just doesn't write at all- the ink's just not flowing right. Any ideas on how to get it 'running' again? Thanks, Emily p.s sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm new here
  17. Hi! Need your help here to identify this Parker ballpen... name of the edition, maybe year and price. Thanks a lot, you guys!

    Private Reserve Shoreline Gold

I thought it would be nice to start the week with a review of a bright, sunshiny color: I like Private Reserve inks as a whole. They have some really nice, saturated colors and are quite similar to Diamine in terms of overall good behavior. This one, though, I am just not excited about at all. It was a bit dry (though that could have been my pen - the stub for my Lamy Safari is overall dry), it’s a light color that I would never have a use for, and it just wasn’t spectacular enough to wow me. On the plus side, it did have a touch of water resistance, which I did not expect for such a light colored ink. Overall, I think that there are a lot of variations of this yellow/gold/orange colored ink, and I think that there are better ones out there. There’s Yu-Yake, Apache Sunset, etc. Check out this tool to see other colors in the same range and I think you can probably find a better orange. Like I said before, I like PR, but this color is just not one I would ever use again. This ink was purchased with my own money and I am not being compensated in any way for this review. All opinions above are my own and you are free to disagree with them if you like.
  19. Thanks to Ben, an excellent FPN member who responded to my classified, I was finally able to upgrade my workhorse Vista with a 14 kt bicolor nib. The nib is solid gold with platinum coating and was originally installed on a Dialog 3. My first impressions are very positive: the nib is both springy and flexible and for some reason is much wetter (even with R&K iron gall) than my steel nibs. I will provide a fuller update after I have used the pen a few weeks, but I really like this combination and have not even touched my Lamy 2000 since my new nib arrived. I also upgraded to a z-26 converter which also improved the appearance of the pen. Here are some photos:

  21. Hello people, I am now chasing nibs (since I'm too poor to afford another pen). I have a Pelikan M200 which writes smoothly, never skips or hard starting (albeit underlining stuffs is the equivalent of asking someone to jump off a bridge, can't do it without major skippings but I /don't really/ mind for now). A man in the shop in which I bought this pen recommended me the Pelikan M600, if one day I would like to upgrade to something more classy, it has the right size and all... BUT, that would also mean that I'd have to spend ~$400 for one! So since I know that Pelikan's Souverän series pens have interchangeable nibs, like Lamy Safaris, I wonder if investing in a M400 14 carats gold nib is worth it (so I can upgrade the nib only, not the entire pen), that would only cost me the price of the nib, ~$135 (My M200 costs less than that lol but who cares it's a gold nib). So people who owns Pelikan M400, what's your opinion on that nib? Is it worth getting one? Or should I just go straight up for a M600? ($400 vs $135 mmm) Thanks!

    Broken Lever, Vintage Pen

I have a pen, very small, that is probably best described as a ring top. Someone played with it and broke off the lever. Under a magnifier, I also noticed the 14k nib is misaligned. The body may also be gold. Can a lever be replaced? And if so, who could do work like this? Many thanks.
  23. Hello there people! First of all, this is not a formal review, but i try and provide the needed information with suitable pictures! Its a light read sprinkled with just the right amount of information! So, I bring to you the review of my Parker Frontier fountain pen! I know that it's too old a model to interest many of you but hey! Old is gold right?? Every pen becomes one with its user! So I've heard...well, that's too much intimacy now! But, i decided to write a review of mine for two reasons: 1) I like this pen so much that while i was writing with it, i thought i should give it the testimony it deserves on my part! and 2) It has got a damaged nib and still it writes perfectly without a scratch! I know its not a very special pen. It is available readily and easily, and is quite inexpensive too, but, beauty (and performance!) in simplicity is THE thing about this pen! Many of you who own this pen and like it, must know what i am talking about! As mentioned in the title, my pen has a gold plated fine-turned-medium nib with other features, also mentioned. But of course the pen comes in a variety of nib sizes and body finishes such as Matt-black, brushed chrome with silver accents e.t.c. LOOKS AND FEEL: This baby is a solid metal pen! With the sleek brushed chrome design and the golden colored arrow-head metal clip and other golden accents..it has got pretty much everything going on for it in the matters of looks and feel! The chrome body has a nice rounded-off feel with just the right amount of texture of brushed chrome that feels silky but not slippery! Its juicy! The Head to toe view! http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2874/9340080017_7593947d90_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-15-31-690 by deathadder_44, on Flickr The toe to head view! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7444/9340085169_d78952d395_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-15-20-124 by deathadder_44, on Flickr UPON REMOVING THE CAP, a friendly looking gold-plated nib smiles at you! It lies along with the feed in a plastic grip section. The feed is a screw-fitted one, so be careful not to pull it out just like that! You might break it and thus, ending your beautiful relationship with the pen! You can unscrew it like a normal screw and it will come out easily. The nib is sort of "attached" to the feed by two "hooks" on each side into which the nib clicks in place, which also makes aligning the nib and feed very easy because once you properly "hook" the nib in the feed, it will stay there in a way it is meant to stay! Now, is it sweet or is it sweet?! The pen; Uncapped! http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5449/9342869402_1e819eab0d_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-10-08-955 by deathadder_44, on Flickr The nib and feed! Sorry i did not separate the nib and the feed as the pen was already inked up and i did not want things to get messy by separating the nib and letting the ink flow around the cloth rag! http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5349/9340127445_ef359bcca6_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-13-53-301 by deathadder_44, on Flickr THE NIB that i had in this pen was a "fine" one, but now it writes medium. Here's how it happened. One fine day while writing with it, i kept it aside for a moment to get to a book, but, the luck had its way and the pen rolled off my desk hitting the edge of the drawer on its way down. Praise be to the heavens that the pen did not hit the ground with the nib facing down! (it hit sideways). But, when i picked it up, i saw that the damage had been done by the drawer. Which pinched my heart. The writing end of the nib had bent a little with the tines being displaced away from each other. I applied some pressure and carefully straightened the bent part and pushed the tines toward each other to be aligned and fortunately they snapped in place with a satisfying click! But, when i wrote with it..the nib had changed! It was more wetter and drew a broader line than earlier by which i was actually happy! However, it did loose a bit of its smoothness but it does not bother at all because the difference is very minute. THE NIB THAT WAS ONCE A "F" http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3712/9340125361_10047ee0c1_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-11-22-764 by deathadder_44, on Flickr As you can see, the tines are not "normal" but it still writes perfectly! THE INK FILLING MECHANISM is a standard Parker converter which is included with the pen and holds about 0.5 to 1ml of ink. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2878/9342916954_330f0e333c_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-14-25-416 by deathadder_44, on Flickr The pen without the body barrel http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7426/9342920606_df4a586b32_z.jpg C360_2013-07-22-15-14-52-020 by deathadder_44, on Flickr THE WRITING SAMPLE (Warning! Toucan Gold Ink

The Toucan ink with the most auspicious sounding name - but sadly not the most auspicious looking ink. Sitting somewhere between orange and yellow (I suspect it's a combination of the two), it's dark enough to be legible - just barely - but wouldn't make for the most comfortable reading. You'll notice I've deliberately used wetter pens to get a darker, more visible line (especially the Noodler's Nib Creaper) - but still it's not the most saturated of inks!! This scan probably does the ink some favours - it's a little lighter in real life - but I think it gives a reasonable impression of the ink. This *might* go OK in a highlighter pen; it's certainly OK to *mix* with the other inks in the range; and may have uses in ink-based artwork... but useless as an everyday writer. Tell me if you have a use for this ink - I'd love to know what it's good for! Here 'tis: http://i.imgur.com/doepAwL.jpg
