Gold Nib Newbie Here, What Is Your Experience With Gold Nibs?

Hey guys! So, I have 6 or 7 pens on the $30 range and of course, they dont come with a gold nib. I like drawing with my FP and I also like flex nibs. What is your experience with a gold nib? Do they right better or just different than steel? Any recommendations for a gold nib under 150? Best! -
Dear All I purchased a pen long time back on insistence of my wife, yeah there are certain things in life you cant say no to. The pen is Golden Dragon - "Jinhao 1200". I am actually very happy with the pen that i bought for Rs. 350 ( US $6) only thing that sometimes bothers me is the color but yeah it actually wants attention from people some positive some negative. But if you talk about the pen writing experience its a killer. Following is my handwritten review along with some images. The coverter supplied with the pen hold okay amount of ink not great but acceptable. Following are the images: Capped Pen with Clear Branding of Jinhao 1200 at the bottom of cap Dragon clip on the pen had two red small fake stones in the eyes of dragon which have come out after prolong use or maybe not glued properly. top of cap has nice logo or design two tone 18kgp nib writes excellent medium The bottom line is the pen for the price is a superb writer.

Does Anyone Know What Pen This Is?

I was recently looking through my stationary and stumbled across a fancy-looking pen. Since I have no clue what the pen is other than it's a ballpoint I was wondering if some kind person could identify it.. Here Are Some Details: It's mainly back with gold rings at the top and center, it has a gold tip and clip with a blue ocean-like background in the middle which then fades back into black. On the clip it reads L'Plume which I can only guess is the brand. But when I search that on the internet all I find is fountain pens by that brand and can't find any information or pictures of this pen... Thanks - Hope someone can help! -

I have my fathers parker pen with Morrison engrafed on the clip and lever There is also a Capitol M with filaree engraved around the M. Morrison was not my fathers name. The pen is also gold covered as shown on the page when you first log on to FPN. I have attached photos Any ideas as to the value of something like this?

I've had a Parker 65 fountain pen for more than 30 years (12ct rolled gold, English made) I recently aquired a matching ball pen and pencil for £20 each and almost instantly lost the ball pen. On looking for a replacement, I found a gold 180 fountain pen and ball pen set (made in the USA) for £40. Is this the beginning of the end? I seem to have paid a very reasonable price for the 180 set, looking at Ebay. I also have an elderly Platignum which actually writes very nicely. I can upload some pics if that would be of any interest.

I visited a flea market a few days ago and bought a Cross Century set for $43. The price in my opinion was really good and the case and mechanical pencil was a bonus. After a little inspection I found some interesting markings on both of them. Both the fountain pen and the pencil were made in Ireland. I found on the net that if the fountain pen was made in Ireland it is from around 1982. Obviously they are the gold filled versions but there is not inscription like on my USA made ballpoint "-1/20 12kt gold filled". I checked the hallmarks used in Ireland but found nothing similar to these. On the pencil is written "CROSS , Made in Ireland , Plaque ORL" and a little hallmark with a T inside (see photo). The fountain pen has "CROSS , Made in Ireland" and a hallmark on the cap with a shield divided by an "X" with "A C T" (photo) also a similar hallmark is found on the nib "A C T Sté". Even if they seem like a set (in the inside of the box there is an inscription 14kt gold filled) they are diffirent: -Difference #1: the CROSS inscription on the fountain pen is in cursive and on the pencil is printer font -Difference #2: they have different colour pen is more pink and pencil more yellow My questions are: -What is the meaning of those hallmarks on the caps? -Were they from different sets? -Why is there no "gold filled" text on them? -The box is quite large, what was inside the box beside the pen and pencil? Hi, I'm am new to this forum but have been a regular follower with help to my small collection. I've just added to it today with the purchase of the 18ct Parker 51 pen/pencil set. After purchasing it, I took it to a pen expert who informed me that the pen looks exactly like a 51, with an authentic 51 nib/filler/ all plastic parts. One of the reasons I thought about before buying the set is that it didnt make since for it to be faked. The gold scrap would be about £300, and the costs to manufacture a one off gold fake would outnumber the cost that I paid for the pen. However, he informed me that the pen does not have the feathered arrow on the clip, this got me a bit worried that I would not get my money back. This got me worried that it could be a fake, hence I posted here. I would appreciate it if anyone could authentic this set. I must also note that the Clio is hall marked for 18ct gold, and there is also a mrk for E.M? Thanks, Nikita

Hi, I have Gold Filled Wahl. I got this vintage pen and tried to disassemble it, but the section doesn't come off. I tried soaking in warm water and heating the section before trying to pull it, however, none of that worked. How do I disassemble this all metal pen? Is it harder to disassemble a fountain pen with metal sections?

So recently my father gave me his old Parker 45 (with gold nib) as he thought I needed a "decent pen". Unfortunately though, despite many attempts- cold water, various cartridges,etc- we can't get it to flow very well. Admittedly, it's not the newest of pens and has sat unused in a drawer for the past few years. Whenever I try to use it it cuts out mid flow or just doesn't write at all- the ink's just not flowing right. Any ideas on how to get it 'running' again? Hello everyone, just recently I somehow discovered the fact that I own a few nice pens. I am not an expert of any kind when it comes to pens, but I have a general love of handwriting and of beautifully crafted things, amongst those also fountain pens, especially piston fillers. In the age of computers not much work is left to accomplish by handwriting. Some cards, some signatures... Nevertheless I rediscovered some of my old pens and gave them a good simple cleaning (no disassembling). The little black OMAS belongs to the ones I used to write with a lot, simply because writing with this pen is a really pleasant experience, as it is soft and rich in writing and moreover a real lightweight. (A nice counterpart to the much heavier Waterman MAN 100 Opera with broad nib that I mainly use for signatures, cards or short letters ) The OMAS. I think I bought it new sometime in the 80s or early 90s. The way I remember it I was told that it is made of celluloid. But now I think I might be mistaken there. Or maybe not. I think I just gather what can be said about the pen, maybe this will ring a bell with somebody: - I think it is clear that the pen belongs to the "Arte Italiana" series. - It is a piston filler of black colour with gold trimming and 12 facetted barrel and cap. - It has only one Greek decor band, the cap band, no second one on the barrel like the "Paragon". - "OMAS Extra" is engraved on the barrel. - The length is 120 mm capped, 110 mm uncapped. - The nib is made of 18 Kt. gold, without twotone inlay. It displays the arrow design. One tine has engraved the letter "M" for the nib grade, the other tine bears an oval stamp. Inside the oval stamp is something that looks like a fir tree (or maybe arrows) accompanied by two letters. Left of the "tree" is a "T" engraved (or sth. looking similar). The right side of the "tree" has engraved "F". Does someone recognize the pen by the totality of this description? I very much hope so! I have done quite some search on OMAS, but it seems difficult. I do not even know if Milford e.g. is the name for a model or for a size... It seems it is never mentioned as anyone knows it anyway... Looking at the catalogues posted here (great, thanks!) I can add the following to the above description: The pen does look very similar to the "Gentlemen" pen in the 80s catalogue (see here) - only one Greek decor band, no twotone nib. But on the other hand mine has engraved "OMAS Extra" instead of "Gentlemen". And moreover the "Gentlemen" pen does not appear to be smaller than the "Paragon", while mine is certainly not a big pen. Second possibility: The pen looks also exactly like the 8201 - 556/F (medium) and the 8211 - 555/F (small) pens in the 1991 catalogue (if you care to open the pdf-file in this thread). But as far as I can see, nothing is said about the actual sizes. So I would guess mine might be the medium pen or even more probably the small one? (If my understanding is correct, the old pre 1950 "OMAS Extra" also came in three sizes, the smallest one being "Dama". Has there been a change of models and/or sizes between the two catalogues of the 80es and of 1991? Apart from identifiying the model I wish I knew what the engraving "OMAS Extra" does signify. Is it a separate model or does it stand for something else? Maybe someone knows? I would also be happy to find out if the pen is made from "resin" or celluloid. Right now I have no photographs of the pen, but believe me, it is looking exactly like the mentioned models in the catalogues. I still might add photos later, although the pen is not looking as impressive as many of the coloured resin and celluloid varieties. Nonetheless it is an elegant non-spectacular beauty with impressive writing characteristics. Thank you for your help! Amelie

I thought it would be nice to start the week with a review of a bright, sunshiny color: I like Private Reserve inks as a whole. They have some really nice, saturated colors and are quite similar to Diamine in terms of overall good behavior. This one, though, I am just not excited about at all. It was a bit dry (though that could have been my pen - the stub for my Lamy Safari is overall dry), it’s a light color that I would never have a use for, and it just wasn’t spectacular enough to wow me. On the plus side, it did have a touch of water resistance, which I did not expect for such a light colored ink. Overall, I think that there are a lot of variations of this yellow/gold/orange colored ink, and I think that there are better ones out there. There’s Yu-Yake, Apache Sunset, etc. Check out this tool to see other colors in the same range and I think you can probably find a better orange. Like I said before, I like PR, but this color is just not one I would ever use again. This ink was purchased with my own money and I am not being compensated in any way for this review. All opinions above are my own and you are free to disagree with them if you like.

Hello people, I am now chasing nibs (since I'm too poor to afford another pen). I have a Pelikan M200 which writes smoothly, never skips or hard starting (albeit underlining stuffs is the equivalent of asking someone to jump off a bridge, can't do it without major skippings but I /don't really/ mind for now). A man in the shop in which I bought this pen recommended me the Pelikan M600, if one day I would like to upgrade to something more classy, it has the right size and all... BUT, that would also mean that I'd have to spend ~$400 for one! So since I know that Pelikan's Souverän series pens have interchangeable nibs, like Lamy Safaris, I wonder if investing in a M400 14 carats gold nib is worth it (so I can upgrade the nib only, not the entire pen), that would only cost me the price of the nib, ~$135 (My M200 costs less than that lol but who cares it's a gold nib). So people who owns Pelikan M400, what's your opinion on that nib? Is it worth getting one? Or should I just go straight up for a M600? ($400 vs $135 mmm) Thanks!

I have a pen, very small, that is probably best described as a ring top. Someone played with it and broke off the lever. Under a magnifier, I also noticed the 14k nib is misaligned. The body may also be gold. Can a lever be replaced? And if so, who could do work like this? Many thanks.

Thanks to Ben, an excellent FPN member who responded to my classified, I was finally able to upgrade my workhorse Vista with a 14 kt bicolor nib. The nib is solid gold with platinum coating and was originally installed on a Dialog 3. My first impressions are very positive: the nib is both springy and flexible and for some reason is much wetter (even with R&K iron gall) than my steel nibs. I will provide a fuller update after I have used the pen a few weeks,but I really like this combination and have not even touched my Lamy 2000 since my new nib arrived. I also upgraded to a z-26 converter which also improved the appearance of the pen. Here are some photos:

Hi, Im pretty new to the collection bug but it as bitten me.....hard.... I got two Watermans(Watermen?) on eBay, new, and have no idea what the models are. One ...the blue one....came in a set with a rollerball, the other silver one single. Both have medium nibs and write beautifully but I'd like to change to a fine nib. I've taken a couple of photos....any suggestions very welcome, and apologies if Im asking something obvious....be gentle, Im new....

The Toucan ink with the most auspicious sounding name - but sadly not the most auspicious looking ink. Sitting somewhere between orange and yellow (I suspect it's a combination of the two), it's dark enough to be legible - just barely - but wouldn't make for the most comfortable reading. You'll notice I've deliberately used wetter pens to get a darker, more visible line (especially the Noodler's Nib Creaper) - but still it's not the most saturated of inks!! This scan probably does the ink some favours - it's a little lighter in real life - but I think it gives a reasonable impression of the ink. This *might* go OK in a highlighter pen; it's certainly OK to *mix* with the other inks in the range; and may have uses in ink-based artwork... but useless as an everyday writer. I'm somewhat new to non-student fountain pens, so I had done a bit of research before hand before picking a 'vintage' pen to go with, and as per the recommendation of two friends of mine (one of which being the one that restored mine) I went with a Sheaffer Snorkel. It's a nice American made pen that's older than either of my parents. The one I got here is a Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral (circa 1953 based on some of the insides), won it for $41 when there was only a minute left and I was already annoyed at being out bidded for all the other snorkels (I wanted to get something like the burgundy red or forest green body, but this is nice ), and then I had it restored by Sean (Write on Time) to like-new condition. I have made posts about this pen before mainly for repair information. In the research I have done for the pen I have not found a definite date. I find dates of between 1908 and the late 1920s. I never got a reply from Waterman when I emailed them about it. Might anyone have definite documentation on this pen which can be seen in the link below? I was unable to edit my other posting about this so I made this one. Basically I am in need of the clip shown in the image I have attached. This is the same exact cap as on my pen. I also need suggestions on where to go to have the cap returned to its original round shape as it was evidently slightly damaged somehow and is slightly out of round.
