    New Member With An Objective

Greetings! i'm Cam. I have a history of cheap FP usage, but have strayed. I stopped using when i ruined a white work shirt years ago... Today is a new day. I've been researching a major project I'm about to embark on, which will take years, and I keep finding myself on the fountain pen network, for guidance and research, so It makes sense to join. Hopefully my experience will enable me to return the favor... I begin with a BIG "THANK YOU", because much of my research has met with meaningful success as a result of the contributions & research of many members in the FPN. I owe you a debt of gratitude! My project - To hand write the Bible. What I have concluded so far is the following (I'm prepared to change my mind as new information is discovered) 1. Tomoe River Paper 2. TWSBI ECO fountain pin F nib I love the ink colors, I need enduring Ink I'm looking for ink that will hold its edge, will stay sharp after it dries, and when i use the Bible, which I will regularly, won't fade away or lose its color. (I know nothing is permanent)... With respect to ink, I'm still researching, and have seen significant research done here, but I still have a couple questions. My current plan is to develop 32 page 'signatures'. The challenge is that I will likely make a mistake every so often. Crossing out and leaving mistakes is something I'd prefer to avoid. 1. Is there any ink that allows for rapid cleanup/removal (as a result of a mistake), that will become durable after it has dried / cured? (assuming Tomoe River) 2. Or, to be less proscriptive, is there an alternative approach that allows FP+ink on thin, FP friendly paper that allows erasure, while resulting in permanence after the ink dries/cures? Any way to accomplish, with FP approach? FP+ink is my path, even if mistakes are part of the bargain... I very much appreciate your contributions. Thx, cam
  10. Hi guys, I have been intrigued lately by Conid fp. I am considering buying it, but I am not sure if I should get the Regular, or Minimalist. They both take 2.5ml of ink inside which is great for what I do (use a lot of ink redlining architectural drawings). They both look cool. Minimalist however costs roughly $100 less than Regular. Have you had any experience with them, and do you think it is worth paying more for Regular? Thank you.
  11. While perusing Badger and Blade yesterday (as it seems a number of us do), I found a running thread with this title and wondered if it could be adapted to FPs. So to break the ice, here's my starter for 10: Pen - Conway Stewart 58 - UK Ink - Pilot - Japan Paper - HP 32lb Letter - US (Yes, I did carry a ream back in hand luggage !) Notebook - Clairefontaine A5 - France Diary - W H Smiths mini leather A6 6-hole refillable - UK Is it a goer?
  12. Eternal Gandhi is an inexpensive pen marketed by Aditya Birla Group at a price of Rs 990/- (US$15) to commemorate on of the greatest human beings of 20th century. A man who stood for equality, sharing, non-violence and truth as he believed all humans were created equal. His doctrines of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satyagraha (non co-operation) and Satya (truth) shook the foundations of British Empire. Mont Blanc produced a Mahatma Gandhi 241 pen to celebrate this great persona and his Dandi March of 241 miles but priced it so high that it became impossible for normal people like me to purchase it. It was priced at about US$20,000.Then came this pen from the family of one of the closest friends of Mahatma - the Birlas. It is boxed in a black gift box with Eternal Gandhi imprinted on it… The pen is black with gold trim and marbled acrylic barrel. The black cap has a cap band with beautiful scrimshaw design while the clip is a ball end. The rear of the cap has an imprint of a famous caricature of Mahatma in white outline from the Dandi March by Ranga. The barrel is marbled brown and black with flecks of gold. The barrel end has a faux black end cap with a gold ring separating it from the marbled portion. I bought a Medium nib and a convertor-cartridge filling system. Although it seems to be a Chinese product created for Aditya Birla Group, the pen is a smooth, wet writer. It is a large pen with a weight of about 39 gms but perfectly balanced and a very good writer. Its USP is the fact that it pays homage to the greatest man of 20th century - Mahatma Gandhi. This review is my humble tribute to Bapu and a thank you to Aditya Birla Group for this undertaking.
  13. My mother just told this story about her and her father (my recently deceased grandfather). She said it was from the time when "you had to use Fountain pens, because there weren't any others." He'd sent her to the shop when she was a wee girl to get him a bottle of ink. My mum asked him what colour ink he wanted, and his sarcastic reply was green ink. So my mum went down the shop, and bought him a bottle of green ink. As a result, my grandfather wrote in green ink for a very long time. I'm not sure if my mother misunderstood my grandfather, or quite likely that my grandfather didn't realise that the little shop down the road would sell green ink as well as his usual black or blue and so he got stuck with green ink.
  14. Friends i was wondering about this Fountain pen which i bought a year ago. I really liked this wonderful writing instrument and would like to buy another same. please help me out, which type of FP is this?
  15. Hello there! My name is Raymond, and I've been in to fountain pens for around 4-5 years now. Along those years, I've only amassed a small, humble collection of just five fountain pens and four bottles of ink. I apologize greatly for the terrible picture quality, as I only have a webcam to take pictures with. The pens here are (from left to right): Jinhao X450 in red/black with a Medium nibPilot Metropolitan in Black/Plain, with a Medium (Western fine) nibTWSBI Eco Black with a Fine nibPlatinum Preppy 03 with a Fine (Little thinner than Western extra fine) nib, eyedropper conversion. Finally, my Cross Bailey in Black with a Medium nib. I have four bottles of ink here to go with them. From left to right: Diamine Oxblood, Noodler's General of the Armies, Pilot Namiki Black, and Waterman Inspired Blue. I'm glad to join you all!
  16. I have been gifted this Waterman pen by a friend, and she tells me it isn't an expensive model, but I can't find out which model it is. Please can anyone identify it? The converter works but has a split in the metal near the front where it fits into the section. I know that it's a CF type of converter from the fitting, so I bought a new one. Sadly, although it fits into the section, it's a smaller diameter than this one that is split. I assume it will still work though. I know these converters aren't easily available.
  17. hi all! i'm a south florida resident, newly reacquainted with calligraphy and potted inks. waaay back in high school i had fiddled around with calligraphy. at Uni, a course on Illustration introduced me to the joys of ink and nibs. i've dabbled off and on with drawing in inks but never with actual fountain pens. which might become a new love. i'm on the verge! lol PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ---currently own: 1. one lonely Sheaffer med nib FP. *(silver cap, acrylic body in what i like to refer to as "blacklight purple", thin body, small, requires posting). it writes like an absolute champ. tho the ink tends to feather a bit on cheap paper, it is too bold for everyday writing. i have NO clue what the model is, though i would like to. it was purchased back in.... ugh... 1997??? maybe? (i have vague hopes of finding a converter for it and making it a drawing pen. or just using pale, colored inks) ---soon to be in my collection: 1. Pilot Prera, solid, yellow, F nib 2. Pilot Kakuno, pale blue and white, F nib 3. *Pilot Prera Iro-Ai, demonstrator, Calligraphy/Italics nib 4. *Noodler Ahab, flex nib so i went on a spending (and researching) rampage. lol!! i started with just looking at nibs to add to my collection but then the FPs became a small obsession. the Iro-Ai and the Ahab i haven't officially ordered yet. i'm very interested in inks as well. colors, shaded inks, etc. so far i have a Noodlers waterproof black on the way. artwise, i need something that can stand up to watercolor, dontcha know. i seem to be showing a bias for Pilot but that isn't really true... was just looking for a pen that fit the needs, didn't break the bank, and that LOOKED NICE. looks aren't everything, but pen that writes beautifully is even better if you like the design. i read/watched reviews and the ones i chose seemed to be good bets. PEN SHOW!!!! i'm wondering if i should wait until the Miami pen show......... or if i should go ahead and pull the trigger, so to speak, and order up the last 2. i'm super interested in refurbed vintage pens, though i'm not sure if any are in the affordable range or if they are all hundreds of dollars. MISC i'm really interested in meeting new people from all over. and those that are interested in calligraphy and art uses of FPs. also, if anyone likes to do old school snail mail with their mad callig skillz (haha. or their non-skills. whichever. lol!), i think that could be a fun way to practice! NICE TO MEET YA!
  18. So here is my story of what I did with both my 146 and 149 75th anniversary fountain pens both with rose gold trim and MOP and limited to 1924 pieces. When I first bought them, they arrived with Med nibs and I used them for only short time before I opted for an EF nib size exchange. The service was excellent and both pens arrived back in less than 8 weeks. I started to use both of them and just could not get used to the way the tiny nib end would drag on the writing surface. I was completely bummed because I new at that point that I had made a terrible mistake in sending for an exchange. So I had no choice but to send them back for another fitting of a M nib. Luckily, one of the nibs was ok so they just charged me a small service fee, but the other had been nicked so I had to pay the full fee again for that one. I am very happy to have them back and now fully understand why most people prefer the med nib as opposed to something narrower. It just writes ever so smoothly on the surface. Lesson learned and pricey one if I may add. Enjoy the week!!
  19. I am asking Indian and other FPNers on their opinions on Fp friendly paper in India. I generally use 75 gsm TNPL A4 copier paper and 70 gsm classmate notebooks. They are ok for EF/F(western) nibs with dry inks. Once, I use some wet inks, i get feathering and bleedthrough. So, in your opinion which is the best fp friendly paper. Is ledger paper ok and what should be the minimum gsm for it to be fp friendly(like should be more than 80 gsm )
  20. Hey, I take a lot of notes at school, and usually carry cheap, lined paper sheets in my binder. My inks tend to have a lot of bleedthrough and feather on the cheap paper, and i was wondering if there is a company that sells lined paper sheets made for fountain pens. I know i could just use a notebook, but it makes it frustrating not being able to have individual sheets to work on. If anyone knows of any paper that would suit my needs, please leave a responce. Thanks Mutton
  21. Hey, I'm new to FP's so go easy if i get any lingo wrong. I cant decide between Noodler's Liberty Elysium, or Noodler's Baystate Blue. I will be using the ink in a Lamy Al-Star with a fine nib, and i will primarily be using it for school. I will usually be using cheaper/thinner paper so i need to know which ink has the best bleed through, and dry-time. I've heard the Baystate Blue stains pens alot but I'm not sure if i should worry about that since it will be one of the only ink's i use in the pen. I guess i could order some samples from Goulet, but i want to know some fellow fountain pen enthusiast's opinions first. Thanks Mutton

    Gold Ones

I've had a Parker 65 fountain pen for more than 30 years (12ct rolled gold, English made) I recently aquired a matching ball pen and pencil for £20 each and almost instantly lost the ball pen. On looking for a replacement, I found a gold 180 fountain pen and ball pen set (made in the USA) for £40. Is this the beginning of the end? I seem to have paid a very reasonable price for the 180 set, looking at Ebay. I also have an elderly Platignum which actually writes very nicely. I hope I can successfully upload some pics. Well here they are, not in the order I had hoped, and quite large. I have identified most of them, but not the Ball pen or the Pencil. Hope some one can help.. Thanks to you all for your welcome!
  23. Hello there! Today i will be reviewing the pierre cardin "Masterpiece" fountain pen! It is a brand marketed by the Flair pens in India in associtation in design with the french fashion designer Pierre Cardin. First look at the pen and you will say "whoa!! is it a Mont blanc Meisterstuck 146 in there by mistake?!! :D" Well ofcourse not! but you will see what i mean as we get on with the review! (Also the name "Masterpiece" = "Meisterstuck") This is one of the most affordable good quality FPs in the market which also manages to give a hint of luxury of the higher end pens. Priced at around Rs 400 ($6.75) in India as in may 2014, It is a must-have for starters! So, lets move on, shall we?.... The pen comes with four standard short cartrideges in a nice tin box with a transparent plastic window. The red velvet plastic pen holder can be taken out and the case can be used as a pen box. Now you see what i meant by "Whoa! a Mont blanc?!" The design is clearly Mont blanc inspired with the pocket clip, the center band and the cigar shaped body. Which is a rather classical FP design anyway. The cap is a clip-on type cap and not screw type. The pen feels quite nice in the hand and the body plastic built quality is very nice with polished lacquer feel to it. The clip, the center band, the barrel threads, and all other golden accents are made of metal which adds a decent amount of weight and feel to the pen. The pen is well balanced even when posted and posts quite securely giving a robust feel. The clip and the center band. The pen posted (and yes! i am working on my handwriting! ) The two-tone steel nib too is quite impressive and smooth with nice engraveing on it. It is a M nib with consistent ink flow. Size-wise it is fairly big as well, giving a richer feel to the pen on the whole even while writing. This isnt one of those "creepy" iridium point germany nibs...it is indeed a quality one. And anyway not all IPG nibs are bad. The section has a smooth taper towards the nib with a mild concave curvature making it pleasant to hold. The pen also comes with a standard converter pre-fitted into it, making it a very user-friendly package on the whole (with 4 spare ink cartridges in the box). Now, moving to the final writing sample..The feathering seen on the paper is because it is a low quality paper and nothing to do with the ink. i tried the pen with diffrent inks and it did not have a single issue with the flow or writing! So, in the concluding statement, i would like to say it is a really good pen package on the whole for everyone! It gives the feeling of using a high end pen without the fear of loosing or damaging it in everyday use. Thats because of its price. Secondly, those who are starting out with FPs and want a really good, reliable writer...this is IT! No doubt about it! ofcourse there are other brands..but this is the complete pen package i have seen so far in this price range. With the classic design, the great looking pen case the 4 spare ink cartridges and the converter...you can never go wrong! So...just go and get it if you can! Simple as that! You will not be disappointed! Hope this review was useful!. Please share through comments and ask any question that you might have regarding the pen! I will be glad to know your views or suggestion! I will be coming up with other reviews for the FPs in my collection later....till then, HAVE A NICE DAY AND KEEP WRITING!
  24. Could you convert a MB Meistertuck 166 highlighter to a rollerball, ballpoint, or even a fountain pen? I've had my MB highlighter sitting in its harness for nearly two years and I've only used it a hand full of times since. But I use my RB every day.... Is it possible to convert?
  25. I was told by a person at a pen store that Montblanc makes the better nib than say a monte grappa or cartier. I wonder if this is true or is it all in the name. I will say they are nice, but I wonder if there are others out there just as good. Hmmm
