    Fountain Pen Smell

I have a Youth fountain pen (I think it's a Chinese knock off of a Parker pen). Anyway, I use it because it has sentimental value, but lately, and by lately I mean in the past year or so, I've always sensed a strange smell when writing with it. I wouldn't describe it as a rubber smell, but similar to it. It's that intense that I can smell it while writing (so my head is at least 20cm away from the pen). I think that the ink is smelly as well, but I don't know if it's from the rubber ink container in the pen, or something else. Does anyone have any remedies for this or should I stop using this pen in public?
  2. I recently bought this pen as my interest in fountain pens got more profound. I found this online and bought it as it seemed cheap for its appearance. Can anyone help me identify this Parker pen??? On the nib, it says "14K PO U.S.A" and the nib seemed to be flat and slanted. thank you
  3. Hey guys. I'm getting a new fountain pen all my experience was with Lamy Vista. I like it very much. Yet I'm looking for a smoother experience. As a student, I don't have much budget and sheaffer 300 is probably the most I can do here. I asked a friend of mine which is the largest fountain pen collector and he said Lamy safari's experience is a very expensive one, but he also suggested Sheaffer 300 and Parker vector. What do you think? Is sheaffer as good writer as Lamy Safari is?
  4. I often stop and think about the current state of the fountain pen industry. The world is moving ever more towards a digital reality, meaning that the need for writing is in decline, which naturally tends to cause the demand for pens in general to go down. I am not trying to deride this movement toward digitalisation, and by no means would I say that we should, for example, be keeping accounts records or writing business correspondence and documentation by hand. That would be insane. However, people still do a lot of writing. The problem is that consumers are turned away by any apparent complexity and inconvenience. For example, smartphones are immensely popular at the moment. But manufacturers are constantly trying to simplify the user experience, and very few people that use smartphones have any deep understanding in them whatsoever. A fountain pen can never be as simple as a ball point. People look at fountain pens, and all their fussiness (needing to clean your pen, needing to always hold it properly, needing to buy ink, fill your pen with it, wait for it to dry, etc.), and just get put off. And this can be seen very clearly by looking at how the fountain pen market has done over the past 50 years, after the perfection of the ballpoint, and by just how rare it is to see someone actually use one. Fountain pens have become incredibly niche. And I'm sure that 10 years ago things were looking very bleak indeed. However, ironically, the development of the internet seems to be bringing about a renaissance in the fountain pen world. Pen reviewers, such as SBREBrown and Matt Armstrong, and retailers, such as the Goulet Pen Company, as well as forums such as this one, have provided a very easy way to access the fountain pen world, and have greatly expanded their visibility. I don't have any facts or figures to back me up, but it does seem like fountain pen usage may be increasing. So what are your thought? Do you have any insights that you may be able to share? How do you see the future of fountain pens taking shape?
  5. Hello everyone! I am Jarwolf! I saw a fountain pen online browsing for something to purchase for a hobby. I saw an advertisement saying "Fountain Pen's 60% off" I thought to myself.."Hmm, what in the world could a fountain pen be?" *click link* I saw an odd looking tip. Okay...I think I will buy it and see what it does! Sadly to say, it did not come with any ink at all, just the pen! Here is a little story why I got this and why I am here today needing help! Okay, so I made up the name Jarwolf, because my first name is Jared, also..well...hehe, I LOVE WOLVES WITH A PASSION!!! awhoooooo!!!!! I am terrified and HATE needles! I wish to get a wolf tattoo on my left arm. I thought to myself, "This pen may work if..." (((bleep), what ink...what bran!!!?! ahhhhhhhh)). So, my question is...Where can I find ink that will work in my fountain pen that is black and permanent such as "indelible ink", or ink that will NOT go away or fade when I go to take a shower and if I were to constantly scrub on the area where I drew the 'tattoo' on my arm. Please help me; my beautiful fountain pen users! Also, a link (if allowed) for the ink that I just described (if there is one!--There has to be! :\ !) Here is the DESCRIPTION of the pen that I have bought, I will also have pictures attached to this. Description: Classic Smooth Writing Pen, 18k gold-plated stainless steel nib,ink Cartridge International Standard, Removable Converter and Refillable, cap type:push. What does "ink cartridge international Standard" mean as well as "cap type:push"? How am I supposed to refill this as well? EDIT:: Would I be able to put different NIBS on sense it is unscrewable//comes off???
  6. Hello! So, I have used the following writing fountain pens: Lamy Safari Pilot Varsity Monteverde Invincia Of these three, I definitely prefer the pilot varsity and invincia. Don't kill me for not liking the Lamy as much as many others do, but in my writing experience it tended to be a bit scratchy feeling and, believe it or not, glided too much for my taste. The Pilot Varsity was an absolutely amazing pen to start with and I'm glad it is the first one I picked up. I love the smoothness of the pen and it was not too wet which was fairly nice since when I got it I was mostly using standard notebook paper. The fine nib worked wonders for me as I was and still am a student, now in college, and the note-taking aspect was really great. The Monteverde Invincia (medium nib) has a writing experience that really hasn't been topped yet. If there is anything I can complain about, it is that the nib has a sweet spot, and maybe that my hands/fingers are large so often they get cramped while holding the neck which is metal. It can be hard to get a good grip. Otherwise, I really love the look of this pen- I love the weight of the metal. The length is absolutely perfect and, truth be told, it could even be a bit thicker since my hands are such monstrosities. In terms of writing though it feels very smooth when in it's sweet spot- it is definitely a VERY wet pen which is fine since I am using Rhoida and Clairefontaine paper. The medium nib makes my writing look much better and it is a surprisingly good note taking pen which is what I was originally worried about. So I guess my list of wants are: Non-scratchy Fairly wet Fairly Smooth A step above what I have so far A looker (A pen that can make a statement) And a good pen for a student. (Hand won't cramp up) Thanks!!
  7. Hello everyone, Any recommendations for cheap fountain pen-friendly journals? (Under 10USD) Just something that is not super soft cover, and will hold up well and doesn't look like a composition book/school notebook. Thanks!

    Ink Stores In India?

Hey hi! Thanks for taking interest. Could anyone help me out with ink stores in India? I would prefer the ones who give an option to order online. (Of course, I cannot travel all of India just for some ink bottles :/ ) I live in a small town & all that is available here is Camlin Blue & Red inks. If you are lucky, you may find Parker Quinky. I'm looking for inkwells up to INR 500 but cannot find stores. I have been swarming the internet since last week but to no good. I've been through pensavenvue.com, pensindia.com & of course snapdeal, flipkart, ebay and amazon. Here's what I've seen: Pelikan inks (32/65ml base colors RGBY) : INR 200-400 : OUT OF STOCK Diamine inks (30-60ml base colors RGY, blue available): INR 375-500: OUT OF STOCK Waterman inks: Same, out of stock. I mean, come on! All they've got of these brands are 850 & above! You name it! Lamy, Diamine, Waterman, J.herbin, etc. Can't find varied colors in any local brands & I'm not going to use camlin. I've tried to shop cross country but the shipping charges are more than the cost of product, obviously. :/ I currently use PILOT NAMIKI IROSHIZUKU - Ku-jaku Peacock Deep Turquoise Blue (50ml) & it cost me 1500 INR. I ordered it from engeika.com. If you buy the same thing from any of the Indian stores, you get it for 2500. Now, I can't afford 1500 for ever color and just for 50ml. So, I'm looking for varied colors & a bit of quality at the same time. So, any suggestion regarding stores / places to buy would be helpful. Also, please let me know if there are any Indian brands who make good inks. Thank you!

    Smarta**

Hello, Few days back I wrote a cheque and signed it and gave it to a lady to cash it, after about half an hour I got a call from the lady saying they refused to pay her, I started to play fool and asked her what was wrong, she said: they send me to the manager and she asked what kind of a cheque is this. Knowing I had written and signed the cheque using sheaffer turquoise ink 😶 told her to come back and I will give her another one. Was wondering if anyone had a similar story. TBH I don't understand why the color should be an issue. Best regards.
  10. A couple of days I put Faber-Castell TG1 Drawing Ink in an Art Pen (1.5 nib) by rotring. It seems to work just fine, for now. It writes divine. How long does it take to clog?
  11. I have happened across, what I have discovered to be a #35 Lucky Curve, with gold-plated floral relief. I have been unable to find its orginal cost and have only been able to find pictures of it (fortunately!), to determine what it is. It was purchased in 1907, as indicated by the engraving on the indecia states: "Glennie Biggs Feb 12, 07". I have not been able to find any relevant current values, despite it, on other sites, being referred to as "very rare". The nib is broken but other than that the pen has very little wear. Kind people please help me!

  13. Hi I'm looking for calligraphy pens with nib sizes from 0.7mm to 2.5mm. I'm looking for branded pens, not on the luxury side of course, but for regular script writing. Any ideas where and what to look for?

Cleaning Fountain Pen With A Converter

I am relatively new to the wonderful world of fountain pens and I have a question regarding doing maintenance for a fountain pen with a converter. My jinhao 188 ran out of ink, so before putting more in I cleaned by rinsing the nib and drawing and dumping water with the converter until it ran clear. While I was able to clean the pen, I do notice a little bit of residual water in the converter. Will this dry out if I just let the pen sit and will it affect the pen at all? If so, what should I do? Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Unknown Senator Pens

Ok, so I'm not going to the effort of typing this whole thing twice (my page closed on me), so I'll be brief. I've been using this Senator pen for a while now and I've come to really appreciate it, however, no matter how extensive my searching, I cannot find information on the pen. I've found pens similar to my one, from Senator, however there are still distinctive differences so I've ruled them out. The pen is good for a lefty (I am one of those) as the nib is fine, or even extra-fine (brass?), meaning it's very conservative and I don't get any smudging, however it can be kind of scratchy at times. There is no other name or marking on the pen apart from 'senator', on both the nib and the lid. It must be mentioned that even though I'd love to hear that this pen is actually a rarity or good quality pen, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a cheap import knock-off. Any information on this pen would be interesting and welcomed.. Thanks!

    Montblanc Historical

Hello to everyone. I want to share with you all, something where I spent long time researching and writing about all the montblanc pieces, most of them limited editions. Many of the photographies were taken by myself, other ones were ceded by some friends, but hope you can enjoy it. (The website is on spanish im sorry if its an inconvenient for someone) http://www.cruzaltpens.com/historico/ In some days I will have the Montegrappa Historical uploaded too, and im working at now in some other brands. Best regards!
  17. Hello there, It's been a long time since I've made a review, but yesterday I picked up a new pen. The packaging was inconspicuous, it was at the local supermarket, on the bottom most shelf. It looked like a cheap (well... it was cheap ) no-name, brown fountain pen in a little plastic bag. When I took a closer look at it, I saw four numbers printed on the side, and when I bought it and took it home, the converter that came with it (a piston, Parker like converter, but with a standard tip) had Hero embossed on the back. I washed it, inked it up with Parker Quink black, and tried it out. It's a joy to write with, although it was a tad scratchy on the up stroke and needed a little smoothing. It writes like an F, and ink flow is very good, not too wet so the F becomes more of an M but enough to make it glide. Sorry for not having any writing samples, my handwriting isn't a thing of beauty anyway. Pictures:
  18. Hey, I was wondering which is better, medium nib or fine in the Metro. The medium might be richer, darker, thicker, but the fine might not bleed as much? Just want some feedback
  19. Does any one know what model Krone pen this is? Thanks!
  20. I'm looking for suggestions(online, UK) as to which pen to get, with £55. To explain....my dear husband, who beamed up to heaven some months ago, had a very old car, which has been sitting in it's space behind our building.....it's been unusable for years, an ancient Clio, but last week so done smashed a window, broke in, tried to steal it, with no luck. Anyway, I knew I needed it to go....and it was incredibly difficult to arrange, as the entrance to the parking spaces behind the building is a limited height access. The nearest I had managed to get was so done who would charge me £100 to do it.... Long story short, I found a place with a truck which could fit, and rather than me paying them, they paid me, so I have a cheque for £55 fir the scrap/salvage( plus all the proper paperwork.....husband was an ex policeman in Glasgow, and I learned a few things from him) So, Picard has gone(I always named our cars....this one was called Picard, as it's first letter was a P. I know. Daft. There it is).... I want to buy a pen with the money.....I've a few ideas already, but would love to hear any suggestions.... Alex
  21. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Fountain Pen Network, As a side effect of the recent re-shuffle of forums (December 2014), which has more or less been concluded now, a list of all pen brands worldwide, as far as any information could be found on these brands, was compiled. Please find below the list of pens, other than the regular subjects , which are discussed specifically in this forum. For a complete list of all known pen brands, check here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/281024-pen-brands-worldwide-by-country/ The idea is to try and keep this list up to date, and if any of you notice that pen brands are missing, please add those to this list, preferably with a reference; I will add them only with pleasure. Similarly, please let me know if any typos were made, I'll gladly correct those too, and also any main brands for the brands listed. In case of incorrect attributions, please let me know too, preferably with a reference too: the idea is to, possibly, create an entry per brand with some sort of description if at all possible (time-wise), or if you yourself would like to do so - by all means post it, and notify me. Thank you all very much in advance , and enjoy! Warm regards, Wim
  22. I was messing around yesterday, using my phone and tablet's LCD screens for lighting. I put a white image on them and used a black hoodie as a backdrop. The screens were the only sources of light. The original images were 14MP, but they were resized to fit this post. I have no clue about photography, and would appreciate some advice and feedback. Here are 4 photos: I have a lot of other photos taken, but I like these best.

  24. Can anyone help me to identify what model this Waterman fountain pen is ? I've had it for quite a few years now and it is a lovely blue and speckled black colour although photographs don't show just how blue it is ... It is a lovely writer but a finer writing nib than you get with most Waterman medium nibs butI have no idea what model it might be....
