Does Anyone Know What Pen This Is?

Hello everybody! I have been fascinated by fountain pens for quite some time now and I am about to buy a new Waterman fountain pen. There is just one problem I have: I don't really have any information on it. I tried looking for it on the Waterman website, but I couldn't find anything. Does anyone here know what pen this is and whether it is worth something? http://cache1.willhaben.apa.net/mmo/1/811/967/61_1931670069.jpg http://cache1.willhaben.apa.net/mmo/1/811/967/61_1040573958.jpg
  4. Hello, Being a ballpoint generation and having used ballpoints since the first day I went to school, I had difficulty in transitioning to fountain pens. Loosening up the grip and using the whole arm movement were like learning how to walk all over again. In the end, I finally found what works for me, and hopefully this may be helpful to others who are having similar problems. Note that this is not the only way. I am pretty sure that others may have discovered various ways of holding fountain pens. Figure 1 shows how I hold ballpoint pens. The pen is held/pinched by the index finger and the thumb, and the pen rests near the first joint of the middle finger. Notice how much my index finger bends and how my index finger meets my thumb. When writing using this grip, I rely a lot on finger movements and downward pressure, both of which are unsuitable for writing with fountain pens. Figure 2 shows my fountain pen grip. First, notice that I slide my thumb position backward (Always remember to pull back your thumb when using fountain pens). Second. the pen is held by my middle finger and my thumb. The pen rests near the first joint of the middle finger and held in place by the thumb. The thumb is positioned slightly backward towards the rear. Third, the index finger simply rests on the pen. In fact, I can actually lift my index finger up and write (as shown in Figure 3). Forth, when writing, do not use any part of your palm as the pivot. Instead, use the fleshy part of your forearm as the pivot and let your arm move freely. When using this fountain pen grip, you will rely less on finger movement, and more on wrist and whole arm movement, which is the ideal according to Palmer. The only caveat is that you cannot use this grip when you need to exert downward pressure. So when you are writing using ballpoint pens or you need to write on carbon papers, you need another grip. I hope this helps.
  5. I use Waterman Phileas fountain pens to create drawings for my website www.TwelveDrawings.com Through my several years of buying, I have watched these wonderful pens creep up and up in price. I hear that back in France, they were strictly a school student's pen. In America, they once sold at Staples for about $20. When I bought my first one at Staples (2011) it was up to $50. I bought two more as gifts. One day, I dropped my pen (nib down onto concrete) and went back to Staples for another. The clerk said the pens were no longer made and suggested I check eBay. At that time (maybe 2012), new Phileas fountain pens were going for $70-90 on eBay. Online retail stores were listing the discontinued pens at $99+. Today, a quick check of eBay shows several black Phileas pens with an "Buy It Now" price of almost $200. The highest priced ones are black pens owned by speculators willing to wait for the market to come to them. Less costly items are typically used, out-of-box, an unusual color, or a Kultur. I have the pens I need and won't be buying any more unless I see a great buy on a new-in-the-box Phileas. If you know such a source, please share. Do you think this $20 pen is really worth paying triple digit prices? And why? Because it's THAT good? Because they are not made any more? Because you might resell it for a profit in the future? I'm okay with all three reasons.... maybe you have another one. — twelvedrawings.com
  6. Hello Everybody, This is officially my first review on FPN and I am very excited about it. It is more like a cry of help, actually. Today, I would like to review a rather odd Sailor fountain pen that I bought a couple of months ago. What I learnt after numerous mails to the Sailor pen company and numerous hours of research on the internet is that this is a Sailor Parley/Parlay. It is from the 1950s and has a rather unusual 'joist' fitting on the barrel and tip section. There are no threads. Just a puzzle like matching shape on the barrel and the section. It comes with a very smooth 14k solid gold nib. Although the nib is not marked with a brand name, since it is permanently attached to the section, there are no doubts of it being the original. Also, the Sailor brand name is mentioned on the barred and no where else. The pen is equipped with a bulb filler that is capable of holding plenty of ink. The window of the filler is made up of clear resin and has not stained in almost 60 years. There is also a breather tube. The pen writes well and lays down a nice smooth, wet line on paper. Although I just tried just a few inks with this pen, I never had any kind of fraying, blotting or change in ink flow. Very consistent I must say. Here are some pictures of the pen. Apologies for the poor image quality. I had to use my phone's (not so good) camera. Now, the cry of help : Could anyone confirm the details mentioned above for the pen in the pictures. I could find little information on the internet on this. I hope the community can help. Cheers! R

    Another Vintage Schaeffer Question

A number of years ago, I found an old fountain pen in an abandoned house. It had no cap and the bladder has completely disintegrated. Just yesterday, I cleaned out the pen and decided to try using it as a dip pen. To my amazement, it worked! Even though it's a little scratchy, I love how it writes. I posted a picture of it to the Pen Fetish group on Ravelry and it was suggested I post some pictures here to see if anyone can help identify this pen. I think I know what it is but it would be nice to have some confirmation. The pen IS a Schaeffer Lifetime, that much I've been able to figure out; as well, it says "made in Canada" and has Canadian patent information engraved into it. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to post pictures here. Here are links to the three pictures I've taken: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evskae/9701378275/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/evskae/9704612840/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/evskae/9704613566/ Any help, including help on posting pictures, would be appreciated. Also, is this a pen that is worth restoring? Or should I just keep using it as a dip pen? If interested, I've also posted a blog post about the pen; you can find it here.

  9. I have had a Mont Blanc Starwalker now for about 4 years and hardly used as fineliner. I am really like my fountain pens and is it possible to just get the required parts to convert my exisitng Starwalker to become a fountain pen? Who will sell the fineliner nib, holder so that it still fits my existing pen? Please help! Thanks.
  10. I was told by a person at a pen store that Montblanc makes the better nib than say a monte grappa or cartier. I wonder if this is true or is it all in the name. I will say they are nice, but I wonder if there are others out there just as good. Hmmm
  11. I have a Chas. H. Ingersoll fountain pen that was found with a Redipoint in Upstate NY. The Dollar fountain pen is in great shape. Oddly enough, I don't believe its ever been used. The nib is perfectly clean, and I can't see any signs of ink in or around it, even with a magnifying glass. The nib is 14K and the outer casing is silver in color, the nickle plate (I think.). All the pieces are intact. I've opened it to take a look inside, bladder etc. is there. I have not tried to use it. C.H.I on nib & full name on top with a $ sign. It has a chevron pattern. The mechanical pencil is a Redipoint with an advertising top: Howe & Morgan Realty. On this I can't tell if it was used or not in the past. It has lead in place & extra lead inside, and I have tried it just to test. The lead slide down function is very smooth. It has a diamond pattern. I have done nothing to either one, they are in the condition they were found in. The reason I put them together, & would like to keep them together, is that I believe they may have been part of a set from the early years of their respective businesses (Chas. H Ingersoll & William Ingersoll). This idea is based on the average age of all articles found on site, including a "Bausch" eyeglass case, minus the "Lomb". I'd like to get a suggested value, as I will be posting on Ebay, as these are in much better shape than any I saw there. Any info would be appreciated.
  12. So Recently I just bought a Monteverde Invincia Stealth (about 5 days ago) And I've been having some really annoying problems with flow and skipping. The pen just downright does not want to start up unless I shake or tap it, or twist the piston to push more ink through. When it does get started up, after a few sentences it starts to skip. Then goes back to being completely dry, until I once again tap/twist/shake. Just rinse and repeat, that's my problem. I've flushed the pen several times with distilled water and once with a tiny bit of dish soap. I've also tried several different inks, J-herbin, Noodlers, Monteverde, Lamy. still the exact same problem, So I believe the issue lies with the pen itself. I've sent in an email to Yafa to claim warranty. I'm thinking is it just worth it to take it to a local fountain pen repair shop to see if they can fix the problem. or should I pay the $20 or so postage to send the pen in for warranty and wait another month for it to get back? Is this a problem that's easily fixable (ie. Local repair shop) or should I play it safe if it is a more major problem (Send it in for Warranty). Or option 3- Can I myself do anything about it? (not very keen on doing any DIY, rather leave it to the pros)
  13. So I am also looking for a 146 limited rose gold doue, but was curious to see what the more astute fp aficionados think of this pen. Is is overkill having a silver cap over a resin body? I would think the resin body is easier to write with as opposed to an all silver body which i have found to be WAY TOO expensive for my taste. Even if I could throw down that kind of bling, I think I would shoot myself before I did. Opinions on the Doue would be appreciated. Is it overkill and I should just stick with an all resin body? I know to each his/her own, but it never hurts to get a few opinions. Thanks!
  14. If there is already a section for this, please let me know. I have yet to find one though on Storage and Organization for fine writing tools and materials. It would be nice to have a section for this for people to ask questions in reference to storage and organization, pose ideas, tips, or tricks, post photos of how they organize and store things, and attach instructional files, such as a word document, to their post if they should wish to do so. Just a thought Again, please let me know if a section such as this exists. Thanks! ~gracefulpen
  15. A while ago I saw a pen - I'm fairly sure it was on here - that was red and black (as far as memory serves) with a hexagonal (?) body, possibly called a 'shogun' or something similar (although memory may be betraying me). I've been searching for the thread for this pen and the picture that went with it, but with no luck. Unfortunately I can't remember the make of the pen. If anyone can help I would be most appreciative.

    Hero 160

As a relatively new fountain pen user who happens to go to university, I really like Chinese fountain pens. They're cheap, they're fun, and sometimes I feel like I get pretty lucky. While I feel like Hero gets a pretty bad rap for the blatant copying they do of designs (such as Lamy or Parker), I ended up buying this 160 on eBay. I mostly dabbled in Jinhao, and while I like them, I decided to spend a bit more and see if I liked these better. This is my first review, and I'm by no means a photographer, so I apologize if some of the pictures aren't quite as good as what you're used to seeing! First Impressions: The pen came in this pretty simple green box. These kinds of boxes I've received before so it's nothing really extravagant or special, but I do like it. It gets the job done and it's pretty nice. You open the box and once again you have this fairly cheap material protecting the pen, but the pen itself I think is very attractive. The clip is nice and springy, and the top of it has a small five petaled flower design. All around the cap you have these grooves of various lengths that stretch downwards towards the barrel of the pen. The body tapers towards the end, and on the barrel you have a shiny chrome band that says "Hero" and under it "160" with the same Chinese characters that appear on the box. Construction: Note that all my attempts at close-up shots failed, so sadly there will not be any photographs here. The cap is simply a pull off, not a twist sadly, but it functions very well. Not much force is needed to actually remove it, and it is secure enough so that it will never simply accidentally come up when trying to remove it from your pocket or pouch. Overall, the construction is extremely solid. Nothing rattles, the barrel screws on and off tightly, and the whole body seems to be able to stand up to some abuse. Filling: The pen uses an aerometric converter which I had some problems with, but I suspect that those were issues related to my own inexperience with the system rather than the converter being at fault. For now, I removed it and have a Parker converter installed, which fits fine. Note that standard international converters don't seem to fit. The use of a Parker converter was a necessity. Nib: The nib is great. Honestly, I love it. It is a 12k gold semi hooded nib, and it writes excellently. I never experience any skipping or hard-starting, it has a nice, juicy sweet spot, and it provides a kind of feedback that I really like. I've had some Jinhao nibs that are smoother, but I rather enjoy this one more. It's not scratchy, but you feel that you're writing which I think is great. In my experience it's a nice, wet nib that can lay down a nice patch of ink despite it being a pretty fine nib. There is little to no line variation, so if you're a flex freak it's really not for you, but since line variation and lecture notes don't particularly go hand in hand, I don't find that it detracts from the experience at all. Writing Sample: I'm no calligrapher, but I tried to make it as nice as I could for you guys! Overall: I adore this pen. I absolutely love it, and this is one that's always going to be inked. It's very affordable, it's very nice, it's not a boring black, and it just gets the job done. When I was contemplating buying one I couldn't find any reviews on this model, so hopefully this can be helpful to someone who is in a similar situation as I was. Maybe they aren't completely ethical design-wise, but if this is any indication, they make one hell of a pen.
  17. First quarter of community college I purchased this pen to transcribe music compositions. Never got the hang of it and the pen languished in a drawer for a few decades, then moved to a drawer in my daughter's room, only to emerge recently in a bedroom bust of missing pens. Inked it up and enjoying getting back to my roots. Any idea which Sheaffer model it is? Thanks! Carol

  19. So my dad has this awesome collection of Aurora Pens and wants to sell them. They are all in mint condition, never touched, never used. He basically had them locked away in a closet for a long time, never even put them on display. Below I have attached a picture of one of them, which is very similar to the others. Neither him nor I know anything about these pens so I was hopping someone could help me out with an estimate of how much they're worth. I'm planning on posting them in the classifieds section. So any information would be great. Thanks
  20. Hello FPN! I Found this pen on a train (Britfag) on the way back from college, and when i found it i knew the brand (Sheaffer), but i cant find anything about the actual model of the pen any were. It is a fountain pen, but one that you need an ink pot with. I am very intrigued for some of the pens go for thousands were some only 10-20 pounds. Love My "new" Vintage Waterman

Yesterday I fell in love with a fountain pen/mechanical pencil duo at Laywine's in Toronto (yes Dear Reader I bought them) and now am trying to find out as much as I can about both of them, e.g. it might be difficult to find more leads for the pencil. FPN seems a treasure trove of information about all matters related to pens, ink, and their history. So far I've discovered that the pen is an "Ideal" made in Canada probably 1933, with a marbled burgundy celluloid (?) case, 14 k. nib and something called a "flex" nib (?). Much as I love fountain pens, and use my old Montblanc, my new Lamy calligraphic, and a sturdy, plain, reliable old Shaeffer "M" plus a couple of little Pilots, I feel woefully ignorant about them. I've recently discovered that Pilot makes some extraordinary pens, Namiki: met my first one visting another fountain-pen wielding friend. A store in this city apparently sells them, so some day I'll venture to explore, but am worried I'l fall in love with another pen. This lovely little Waterman is a joy to write with, loaded with Lamy Royal Blue ink -- feels like part of my hand, and there's no resistance at all when it glides over paper. NOW my question is: the issue of "pressure" when writing with such a pen: what difference does pressure make when writing? I've always let the pen decide . . . . .input from the experts among you would be welcome. AND -- would value advice about the quality of paper to write on. I now use Clairefontaine large format notebooks, and French letter-writing paper, but for "plain everyday" single sheets of writing paper?
