  1. I got an old waterman's ideal #2 wetnoodle nib out of a fountain pen found on Ebay and put into mi Faber Castell E-Motion pearwood fountain pen! http://s26.postimg.org/yza9l4zex/10848813_10205690042309519_6753319126576676301_o.jpg Here's a video:
  2. I received a beautiful Faber Castell Loom for Christmas and I was just wondering why the nib doesn't have a breather hole? It's a beautiful and unique looking nib, but I just thought the lack of a hole was interesting. Anyone know?? I have noticed that when I remove the cap (to write), that there's little to no nib creep from the air pressure change--which I LOVE! My Safaris and Metropolitans have pretty substantial leakage whenever I remove the caps. Thanks! Sorry for the poor quality pic.
  3. I did ask this earlier, but got no replies....trying again... I have a Faber Castell e-motion, the white one, and I love it. The one thing which drives me daft is .......the top will not stay on. It wiggles and falls off with no attempt at clinging on. Anyone else find this? It *is* a pretty heavy beastie, even unposted, but I like that. Alex
  4. Hello! I came by a fountain pen today and haven't been able to identify it. I would be very interested to know about any information concerning this pen. I was able to find a short history of the company itself but not much about the pens they produced. I'm definitely not an expert on fountain pens (I've been researching them for a few weeks now), but I'd be very interested to know more! I'm wondering how old this pen might be, does it have any historical value, is it worth hanging onto? The pen seems to work - I've been cleaning it for the better part of the day (carefully, taking precautions and using only water) Breather hole in the cap is located opposite of the clip Nib engraving: OSMIA SUPRA 14K 585 Body engraving: 982 F (Tried to upload pictures of all details)
  5. I am a new entrant in the fountain pen world and my knowledge is limited to what I have read online. I am thinking of buying a pen and the things that matter to me are: Writing quality (of course), solid build, and appearance. I have narrowed down to the following pens but am not able to decide because, besides the good comments, I have also heard some serious negative reviews about them - I am not sure how prevalent these issues are. Could someone please help me decide? 1. Visconti Rembrandt: I like the looks of it the most but I have read at some places (amazon) that there are issues with its ink flow and build quality. 2. Waterman Perspective: I almost equally like this one too but again have heard bad reviews on its build quality (lacquer coming out) and ink flow. 3. Faber Castell Ondoro: The looks are a little bland for my taste but if it turns out to be superior in quality than the above two then I may go for this one. If you think some other pen (in similar budget range) is far more superior to the above three then please feel free to comment. Please advise. Thanks.
  6. For some reason the design of Faber Castell pens have never appealed to me. I picked up this pen after trying the Ambition and loving how the nib wrote. This being my first Faber Castell the Basic seemed like a good starter, especially given that it shares the nib with the more expensive FC pens (as I have been informed). It arrived in what I can only describe as a white plastic flip case - the quality is excellent, however the colour does not at all suit this pen. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8272/8712774171_364455525c_b.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8399/8712774141_728fa753b3_b.jpg Appearance and Design (7/10) http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8266/8713897118_fbb7656136_b.jpg I bought this as I was looking for an understated (and relatively inexpensive) pen for work. The Basic comes in a range of different finishes including: metal, leather and mother of pearl. The Carbon model is slightly different being all black (and looks great with my matte black VP). I am not a huge fan of the cap - for me it is a little too large/curved and is not in keeping with the straight barrel/section. To me Faber Castell pens always seemed to look a little unbalanced. Construction and Quality (9/10) This definitely a solid and well built pen - impressively so given the price. As has been mentioned in previous reviews the barrel seems to be constructed in 3 parts. An inner metal tube, a layer of carbon fibre, and then the third outer layer with a transparent/polished finish. The finish on the cap makes it a magnet for dust and I seem to be forever cleaning it! It is a slip cap (which is not my preferred mechanism) but that does make it more suited to quick/short writing. Weight and Dimensions (9/10) The first thing I noticed when I picked up this pen was the weight. My guess is the manner in which the barrel has been built, but it does make the pen a little back heavy. Not overly so, however, it is still comfortable to use. When capped it is a fraction longer than the Lamy Safari. Uncapped it is just over 0.5cm longer. This pen has been designed to post and does so rather securely. However when posted it measures 19.2cm - which for me seems to border on the uncomfortable rather than comfortable. Unposted this pen is ideal. Nib and Performance (10/10) http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8549/8713897076_6a69cd4674_b.jpg As I mentioned earlier I had been told that the Basic shares it's nib with the more expensive pens of the Faber Castell Design range. I opted for the Fine nib. This steel nib definitely looks like the other FC nibs. I especially like the engraving and lack of breather hole. If I had to make one improvement (which would be a design feature) - a black nib would have suited the rest of the pen much more. How does the nib perform? In one word - fantastic. I was blown away by how well this nib performs - writing with it is an almost effortless task. The nib puts down just the right amount of ink and writes with a Western Fine line. There is a great level of feedback but at no point does this nib falter. For a steel nib in a sub-£30 pen I am very happy. Filling System and Maintenance (7/10) This pen uses a C/C filling system. Perfectly adequate for a pen of this cost. My only gripe is that the converter did not come as standard. I am currently using standard cartridges - the length of the barrel allows a spare cartridge to be stored! Cost and Value (9/10) I picked this up from cultpens (as usual...no affiliation) for just under £30. It can be had for less elsewhere but unfortunately my impatience got the better of me (and delivery was free!). Conclusions (total = 51/60) The Faber Castell Basic is a inexpensive quality writing product. The nib definitely feels like it belongs on a much more expensive pen. I no longer have an aversion to Faber Castell pens and will actively encourages others to use them, starting with this one! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8533/8712773705_2f8fdc7342_b.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8409/8713896834_267048e021_b.jpg
  7. I'm becoming more interested in the Faber Castell Emotion All Black and how it compares with the older e-Motion wood body fountain pens. Certainly I'm curious on how the nib writes -- although I'd be surprised if it were much different than the M nib on the wood body pen. But I'm also curious about relative size of the two models (length, girth, hand feel, etc). I have the wood barrel e-Motion pencil and find it comfortable. I've not found any good information; even on the Faber Castell website no information is given of this sort. Thanks in advance y'all.
  8. I've just bought a used Faber Castell Basic Carbon fountain pen from a seller on eBay. I had read and watched reviews of the FC Basic and as my other FP is a medium nibbed Parker but I thought I would like to try a fine nibbed pen for a change. The pen is in excellent condition but I discovered that the nib is marked EF rather than F. The pen arrived inked with a long international cartridge of black or blue-black already fitted and four other unused cartridges included. The cartridges are unmarked and the only thing of note is the base of the cartridge appears to be sealed with a white plastic plug. However I find the pen seems to write with a more dry and scratchy line than I expected. I am not used to such a fine nib and I don't know if this is to be expected. Most of the reviews of Faber Castell pens say that their nibs are very smooth so I was expecting better. I will take the pen into work tomorrow and have a look at the nib under a microscope and I have ordered some blunt needled syringes to change the ink in the cartridge. I just wondered if any of you folks out there could offer any advice about this make of pen and nib size or for that matter writing with nibs this narrow? What inks are better suited to these types of nibs, Many thanks. Brian
