  2. Over a realtively short period of time, I've purchased a number of Noodler's pens. Almost all are Ahabs with one Neponset in ebonite as are the Boston Safety Pens but more about them some other time. However, rapidly becoming clear favourites are the ebonite Konrad pens, named by Nathan 'Dixie #10'. I just love these pens (and I confess, the wonderful aroma of ebonite!) and this is just a brief review/comment. Many of you will be familiar with the Konrad et al, and the nib is the same as the Ahab. Further details are all over this site too. Currently available in one colour 'Red Rebellion' (I got mine from Pure Pens in the UK) each one is an individual. This is down to the manufacturing process and colouring of the ebonite. I believe there was another colour - similar to the Chestnut BSP - but Ross hasn't had any and even Goulet are not showing any stock. They are simple piston-fillers with a blind cap covering the filler knob. The picture above shows this removed on the right-hand pen and this particular one is a (poor!) example of one of the other sorts of finish in the ebonite that can be expected. Basically, the pens are either mainly black or mainly red, both with really attractive marbling in black. I've not removed the nib and feed on any of mine, simply because there has been no need. They all write perfectly for me, straight out of the boxes. Almost certainly, the user can adjust the nibe with the same simplicity as on Ahab pens. Incidentally, the one acrylic Konrad I've got behaves in exactly the same way - the colours are just somewhat brighter! Lastly, the piston mechanism can be removed - carefully but intentionally - by removing the blind cap and then gently unscrewing the unit by gripping it just above the top of the barrel. This would be the way to apply a little more silicone to the piston etc IF required. All in all, I'm really pleased with these pens. The ones pictured are filled with Noodler's Air Corps Blue Black (writing example) and Noodler's Walnut in the other. Borealis Black in another is an absolute dream to write with - so smooth - an loads of different papers. Well worth the expense and I reckon they are great value for money. And as the festive day is almost upon us, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy & Healthy New Year. And may I leave you with a few pertinent alterations to a well-known Christmas song: On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, my true-love gave to me... 12 Diaries Planning 11 Papers Bleeding 10 Nibs a’Skipping 9 Bottles Leaking 8 Tines mis-Lining 7 Swans a’Filling 6 LE Specials 5 Golden Inks 4 Calling Cards 3 French Pens 2 Turkish Seals And a dip-pen that is out of warranty!

  4. Good morning! Technical - and perhaps stupid - question: how do I seal an eyedropper to prevent ink leakage from the point where the section screws into the barrel without using silicone grease? I've started using paraffin wax: once warmed with the fingers, it can be spread very homogeneously and seems to work well. However: - Am I doing potential damage? I.e., is paraffin wax able to corrode or damage ebonite, or is it safe? - Would it be better to use natural wax? I read somewhere that it contains potentially harmful acid substances?

    Ebonite Feed Resistig Heat Setting

Hi forum. I've restored a Swan pen which had a feed with an immencely huge gap. The feed has "SWAN" engraved on it, and is a good fit in the section, but I've heat set it several times and it keeps going back to making a gap, enough to put paper between the nib and feed (not as big as originally found but still big enough to cause leaks). I almost thought it may have been replaced at some point and that this may not be original feed (or nib) for this pen, but it's all Swan and the fittings are the same. I don't presume they had differently curved nibs or feed across the models of the same size. What is best to do? Best

  8. Hello everyone. In the past I had made a publication that was to make a decision to get my first vintage flexible fountain pen and finally I could own one of these beauties. It is a moore safety pen in black hard rubber with a very good ink capacity since this is a long but slender pen.The pen feels quite comfortable and light in my hand is a pretty beautiful pen that always impresses people when they see a retractable nib of my moore. The 14k gold nib is small but has a good flexibility as the seller told me on his website that he lists it as a nib superflex. The 14k nib is an extra fine point when used without any pressure and not a single stroke has failed me and we add that to be an extra fine nib it is quite smooth. When I write cursive with the flexibility of this nib it is quite satisfactory and does not tire me and they offer me a beautiful line variation without the need to put a lot of pressure. I also want to comment on you that the nib is something dry but without being annoying (I mean feeling scratchy or skipping strokes) and even in rhodia paper using flex it dries almost instantly without fear of accidentally stains on your sheet or In hands, it may be that the somewhat dry sensation is due to the pilot blue-black ink that I use since it has some time that the lid broke and I stuck it with adhesive tape and this may be somewhat thicker by evaporation. And what is most impressive about this great fountain pen is that it has never shown railroading when I use it in flexible mode :notworthy1:and I don't have to be dipping it in the inkwell at all times as with my dip pens. Although we cannot deny that the dip thought of what I have managed to see in the hands of a calligraphy expert they can create an extremely beautiful calligraphy. Although I personally have bad luck in finding a good combination of dip nib and ink XD and it is somewhat complicated to get ink at a good price in my country. Unfortunately I don't think I have time to improve my handwriting for an approximate six months since I find myself doing my professional practices at the university to be a lawyer. I attach my results with dip pen:FP FLEX NIB AND DIP FLEX NIBS IT IS VERY ENJOYABLEI became addicted to flex nibs!
  9. A few weeks ago I picked up an Airmail/Wality 69eb, marketed as the Airmail Ebo from Fountain Pen Revolution, because I needed some silicone grease and because I wanted to take advantage of FPR's 20 percent off sale. I only paid 16 dollars for this pen, and I have really enjoyed it. It has been a great workhorse these last couple of weeks and has earned a spot amongst my favorites. I really enjoy the pen's styling. Its cigar shape and ebonite body give the pen a vintage feel. Indian pens, specifically the handmade ebonite eyedroppers, have always invoked nostalgia. This pen is no different. The Airmail 69eb is a large, but not oversized pen. Here it is next to a Metropolitan, Al-Star, and Ahab. It is a comfortable pen to use posted or unposted and is very comparable in size to the Ahab, just slightly thinner. I have read mixed things about Wality/Airmail nibs. My nib gives decent feedback but is not at all unpleasant. Sometimes it feels like writing with a nice pencil. Sometimes I enjoy the feedback on a workhorse pen as I am usually writing quickly and the feedback helps keep my writing more legible. The nib is marked "Special Wality, Tipped Fine" It writes a very fine line with Pelikan Royal Blue. The only other eyedropper I have experience with is an Asa I Can and that is a rather wet pen. Royal Blue tends to be a dry ink so I thought it would be a good choice. The Airmail 69eb does not seem to be a very wet writer and with Royal Blue is a great choice on cheap, absorbent paper. I scrubbed the nib and feed before I inked it and I haven't had any flow issues, hard starts, or skipping. It writes a consistent fine or extra-fine line. The build quality of the pen is good. All of the threads are nicely cut, the nib and feed were nicely set, and the clip works fine. Mine has some small fit and finish issues. The cap band extends below the ebonite material of the cap and is fairly sharp. Sometimes it gets caught on my pen case when I try to slip it in and I am afraid it is going to ben and scratch pen's body. Also, the threads, though nicely cut, must have a sharp edge or bur because they gathered some paper towel material when I wiped them. That is really not a big deal because they feel fine on my fingers. Moreover, while I have read that the pen is handmade, the section is not made of ebonite. It has the feel and odor of vegetal resin. I am not sure how much of this pen, if any, is hand turned. It was only 16 dollars. I do wish the section was made of the same ebonite material as the body. Overall, I really like the pen. For 16 dollars, something like the Pilot Metropolitan gets you a pen with nicer fit and finish, a smoother nib, and a lot less character. I really enjoy Indian pens. Perhaps it is an unfair association, but they evoke feelings of nostalgia and adventure. I bet Indiana Jones used something like the Airmail 69eb to document his travels *This is my first pen review. I apologize for the bad picture quality and the sloppy handwriting.*

  11. Manu Propria is the atelier of Martin Pauli of Berne, Switzerland. Martin is a serious student of Japanese urushi styles and techniques and a highly skilled artisan. His pens are all handmade by him alone, thus his brand name which translates to "my own hand." I received my first of Martin's pens just today, and I am delighted with the aesthetics, the quality of workmanship and the ergonomics of this gorgeous pen. I want to share a few photos, just because I think the pen is so exceptionally beautiful. I am aware that I am posting this in the Japan-Asia forum, and that Switzerland in in Europe. But the pen is more in the Japanese tradition, so ... If the moderators would dispute my judgement, they can move this posting as they feel appropriate. Nuff said. Here are some photos: Enjoy! David P.S. Typo in topic title noted. "Neoro" should obviously be "Negoro."

  14. Osprey Pens - Milano Ojemoka Japanese Ebonite (F) fountain pen, a long term BIFL investment for generations to come Take home: Hidden gem of extreme value in a classically designed Japanese ebonite pen with a mission toward the future: Appearance & Design (10) - This is a classic flat top subtly tapering cylindrical design much like a vintage Parker Duofold. It sports a rolling ball clip, secured threaded post, small grip section with unobtrusive threads after a small step down from the barrel. … Construction & Quality (9.5) - Construction is excellent with an extreme polish of the rippled coffee moka brown/black Japanese (Nikko) ebonite hallmarking the centerpiece of tactile appeal. Color is almost like a darker Eboya Tanshin (red). Tolerances are high without wiggle when cap or post threaded. There is a minuscule < 0.25 mm step between the finial and main body cap at their join. If I tap hard on the bottom barrel I can hear the converter tick, tick against the inner barrel. … Weight & Dimensions (10) - 24 g with < 1/3 partially filled converter. It really sized like a Duofold lookalike or like a modern version of my Waterman 55. It takes a lot to rank in this crowd: (top) Parker Duofold Centennial, Aurora 88, Sailor KOP, Osprey Pens Milano, Sailor 1911L, Waterman's 55 from Dr. Robert Tefft estate, Pelikan M605, Pilot 743 (bottom) … Nib & Performance (9) - Plain steel appearance hides great smooth performance with a hint of feedback with a well controlled flow using Waterman's Mysterious Blue. Nibs are interchangeable, #6! If Osprey Pens has a nibmeister, they are doing a terrific job! I did get to try the notched semi-flex on another of their pens and it had no line variation whatsoever but was a softer than nail writer. My pen stands on its own with the default nib as a daily writer. Absolutely no complaints. I have a Waterman's 52 wet noodle so maybe I am biased, but pen companies have no business even marketing flex but I understand they have to pray to the flex religion. Minus 1 point for dry out of the feed but resolved when I fed the feed by turning the converter … Filling System & Maintenance (9) - Dead on standard cartridge/converter and easy to flush. The original pen came with a medium nib and the CEO swapped it to a fine on the spot without adjustment. The Milano can be converted to an eyedropper fill with silicone grease as there is no metal threads, just ebonite to ebonite. … Cost & Value (10) - MSRP $70 USD?! Paid $61 from 20% pen faire discount!!! I had my eye on an Eboya and now see more Osprey Pens in my future. … Conclusion (Final score: 9.58) - This average score should be multiplied by 100s for the sheer mission of Osprey Pens: to give back and empower the next generation of fountain pen lovers with affordable tools. Everyone should support this mission. Here's the little background story: The local art store had its long running "Pen Faire" and we made our 2nd pilgrimage to see what they had in store. There were crowded gatherings around Lamy, Sailor, Visconti and Yafa's stable of brands which left a gap in the circle of tables for a new brand I did not know. We squirrelled over to the new unknown brand. On the table were a nice conservative set of flat top Duofold lookalikes in nostaglic tortoise shell, green and black acrylics. A black chase faux rubber one caught my eye (turns out it was real). They also had the faux flex nibs with the cut outs de rigeur in fashion. What also caught my attention were the well-dressed reps who looked out of place from the more casual pen folk. "What have you got here? I never heard of Osprey?", I asked the young gentleman dressed in a suit. Next to him was a somewhat older rep whose was silence I mistook as the junior rep boss. Why am I telling you all this and not about the pen? Because for the next 5 minutes, the young rep proceeded to introduce his brand, Osprey Pens in an unlikely fashion. He talked about how they were contributing to schools to promote pen use in kids lives. He explained they had to get around core curricula entrenchment by offering an elective program based on their pens and nib holders with zebra-G nibs (comic steel nibs) to make it fun (comic drawing) for the kids and not something they are compelled to do. He kept on it and in between I'd look at the "boss" to see if he would intervene or note praise in the younger's presentation. Nope, the fella went on about the mission to empower a new generation to see our love of fountain pens amidst the digital competition of tablet and iPads and other attention suckers. Osprey pens is on a mission to give back and inspire kinda like Tom's shoes or Patagonia, businesses that care enough beyond profit to value corporate responsibility. The value proposition was customer driven purchases help their community program of fountain pen promotion through Osprey Pen donations. I still didn't get to learn more about the pens and he didn't "sell" me on them but rather the big idea was this giving back to the next generation. We could really feel the passion of his conviction and to my mind he passed the brand's spiel "demo" though I did not get a word edgewise about any sales appeal about the pens. What duh?! Tell me more about the faux BCHR, damnit! The pens were gorgeous, classic and conservative much like my top best pens I narrowed down: current I finally did get to confirm the #6 nibs, cartridge/converter basics from the older rep and another helper who I thought was from the art store. Turns out she was their inhouse calligrapher! In the end, all the details finally got fleshed out: They are a local company They give back to the community and promote fountain pen love Their product is solid, classic and incredibly affordable. Osprey Pens is a big win. After my wife and I stood there receiving the speech, I'd had hoped we start a small gathering and eventually folks paid attention. But I was a little exhausted so before I committed I wanted to make the rounds especially to check out the new Sailor lighthouse. Nothing was compelling to buy except that feel-good-rationalize-helping-pen purchase with Osprey. They didn't need it as the pen sells itself, but the young man really made an impression on us. When I came back to purchase the black chased hard rubber much like a modern version of my Waterman's 12 POC then they pulled the rug over my eyes and showed off their other Japanese ebonites, which the other rep said were the best sellers. It was between a black top, ripple body or all ripple. Ultimately I got the all ripple Eboya replacement. Most surprising of all was when I asked for a card. Turns out the young junior rep was the CEO/Founder, Abhi Rao! Both embarrassed and impressed, I asked for his autograph on the pen box to mark the memory, but instead he offered to write me a letter if I gave out my address. My Milano is a special pen, but more so, Osprey pens giving back is what will ultimately serve the hobby in the long run. Think about it. For the hobby to grow, it needs to spark new joy in others. Osprey Pens is on a mission and I'm grateful to support them. The gorgeous pen is just the icing on the cake. P.S. Turns out they've been doing this for a while and there's a bunch of solid review videos on their pens. I have no affiliation with Osprey Pens just a satisfied customer; I think they need more exposure/marketing, though.

  17. Forgive me if I'm repeating a topic here, but I couldn't find anything with the search function. I have a Noodler's Ebonite Konrad that I really enjoy. Up until now I've been using it with the flex nib, but today I decided to try swapping it out with a Goulet #6 Medium. The swap and heat setting went well, but the pen is now an absolute gusher. It writes more like a broad and puts down enough ink to puddle. I inked up with Asa Gao, which I know is a wetter ink, but even so it seemed extreme. Is this a problem with the nib, or the feed? Is it because the feed was intended for use with a flex nib? I generally like broader nibs, but this is a little much even for me. I have to write very quickly to avoid puddles. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I can always go back to the flex nib, but if there's a way to make the Jowo nib work, I'd be glad.
  18. This is a pen I was going to review whether I had a good or bad experience. I'm glad to report that this is a great all-round ebonite pen. The same review is up on my blog along with reviews of some other pens (if anyone is interested). Hope you enjoy reading my review! http://a63.tinypic.com/16ga5ar.jpg I have mentioned above that the design "is" inspired by Mora Stylos' Oldwin Classic. I am not sure about that. It's my guess that it is inspired by that design. I haven't been explicitly told that it is. It could very well be a coincidence that the designs are similar. I do not want to take away from the manufacturer who worked hard on designing and making the pen. http://a68.tinypic.com/34sm3gn.jpg http://a65.tinypic.com/14e7yif.jpg http://a66.tinypic.com/fthmjs.jpg This is the first pen to get 59/60, more than any of the pens I have reviewed so far and it truly deserves it. http://a67.tinypic.com/15xuwaw.jpg http://a66.tinypic.com/2z8rneq.jpg http://a65.tinypic.com/30s7nya.jpg http://a66.tinypic.com/28b6wc4.jpg http://a66.tinypic.com/2eojm74.jpg
  19. Hello, I have a question that I do not think has been answered yet (at least not that my extensive googling and patrolling of this forum can find). I have a Jinhao 159 that I'm slowly turning into a flex-nibbed pen. I bought a Noodler's #6 flex nib a while ago, and while it DOES fit, albeit with some force, and it DOES write, the feed has some issues keeping up with the demands of the nib. A possibility to fix this is jerry-rigging a Noodler's ebonite feed into my 159. The only thing I've seen about this was a random post a while ago on some forum I'm not familiar with stating that he 'was going to try cutting it to fit', but I never saw a resolution to this. It seems like it would fit, just have to cut the bottom a bit where Jinhao has that flat side on their feeds. Anybody tried this? I'm not too worried about ruining the pen or other parts, since none of these things crest $10. Thanks, John
  20. Hello all! I’m fifty aged, master of goldsmith from Poland. I used to make handmade weeding rings, but few months ago I started to interest in fountains pens and I found this forum. I live in unique region – Silesia and it influenced me and my work. Silesia is usually known from coal mines, but this region has changed to business and high industry center, nonetheless coal is still deep in our culture. This prompted me to make my own fountain pen - Silesia. The pen refers to the industrial tradition of the region, where I've been living for 50 years. The pen illustrates the transformation that has taken place at that time. The body made of black ebonite with embedded onyx symbolizes the tradition of the Silesian mining. They contrast with the titanium ferrule referring to modern technologies. With this pen, I want to express pride of the region. Tell me what are you all think about it. Maybe I could make something better or you just have tips for me, I’m waiting for your comment and opinion.
  21. Hello everyone at the fountain pen network. Today as always I come to ask your advice and share your wisdom and opinions to be able to solve several doubts that I have in my head. I love both modern and vintage fountain pens from the bottom of my soul, most of my feathers are modern and I only have one vintage that is my prized "51" parker. And I've decided that it's time to get another vintage pen but an older one and I've always had the desire to get a vintage fountain pen of ebonite with flexible nib is a great historical piece that I wish to own in my little collection. Now I have the money available to buy one but I have a lot of doubts about which one I should get. I have three ebonite in my sights that I want to obtain but at the moment I can only get one. hese are the fountain pens that I want to get: Parker Jack Knife Safety Fountain Pen - BCHR, Ring Top, Fine Full Flex Lucky Curve # 2 Nib (Excellent, Restored) https://www.peytonstreetpens.com/parker/duofold-lucky-curve/parker-jack-knife-safety-fountain-pen-bchr-ring-top-fine-flexible-lucky-curve-2-nib-excellent-restored.html------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Conklin Crescent 2P Fountain Pen - BCHR, Fully Flexible Fine # 2 14k Nib (Superior, Restored) https://www.peytonstreetpens.com/other-u-s-pen-makers/conklin-pen-co/conklin-crescent-2p-fountain-pen-bchr-fully-flexible-fine-2-14k-nib-superior-restored.html-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Conklin Crescent 40 Fountain Pen - Large BCHR, Wide Cap Band, Flexible Medium 14k Nib (Excellent +, Restored) https://www.peytonstreetpens.com/other-u-s-pen-makers/conklin-pen-co/conklin-crescent-40-fountain-pen-large-bchr-wide-cap-band-flexible-medium-14k-nib-excellent-restored.html---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I like aesthetically more conklin but my biggest doubt to decide to choose one of these is about filling system of these fountain pens which is better? button filler or crescent filler system or level filler? I understand that both have to change the rubber bag every so often, but I ask about their internal mechanisms which is better, more reliable and robust and which pen is easier to maintain and change the bag.I have already attached the links so that they can see them and help me to take my decision and that they can tell me the pros and cons of these mechanisms

  24. Vintage or precious pen lovers, how do you carry your fine aged or precious pens for everyday use? Despite surviving decades if not centuries, vintage pen material (urushi, hard rubber, celluloid, etc) is not like lucite bulletproof. I have a cloth pen case and a tougher leather one but don't trust soft material. Short of carrying in a box, most often a Parker Duofold snap clam plastic coffin or padded mailer, what do you use to carry? 2 points off if you reply, "Just hang off the back pants pocket" Thank you

    Ranga Model 8 Black Ebonite

This is my first review on FPN. I recently ordered a Ranga Model 8 with JoWo #6 Nib in Gold Mono Tone from Mr. Kandan. Body Black Ebonite glossy finish. He's been extremely responsive and patiently answered all my questions. I'm addicted to his pens. I recently ordered his newly released Model 9B pens as well. So here goes my review; Design and Construction: 8/10 I absolutely love the torpedo and cigar shaped pens. This torpedo shape is my favourite. A Standard Swiss army knife for size reference. The pen is very light in weight at just 19gm capped and inked. However this light weight doesn't make the pen feel cheap. It feels quite robust. It is well balanced when writing. The cap however, doesn't post securely, this is not a pen that is meant to be posted. The cap also easily clips into pockets as the size of the pen is average (just a tad longer than a Pilot Metropolitan). It is perfectly suited for daily carry. The body of the pen weighs just 11gm It is very well built. The cap threads are very well cut. There's no skipping of threads when screwing and unscrewing the cap. The action is smooth and inspires confidence. The finish on the black ebonite is glossy and quite well done. However we can still see some tooling marks. Comparing it with another pen that I own (Deccan Advocate -- which is so well-finished that it's surface feels lacquered), I found that the finish could have been a little better. The quality of ebonite seems top notch. There are only two very small pits on the cap. (Visible only if one went about looking for them with a magnifying glass). The cap leaves some scratching marks on the barrel of the pen just below the point where the section threads into the barrel.. But this is common on all ebonite pens. The section is a little slim for my liking (after being used to Deccan Advocate which is very thick) but I hope it is just a matter of getting used to its slim size. The section threads into the barrel very securely and smoothly and I'm pretty sure it is going to be leak proof but I've not tested it. It comes greased so that one can convert it to an Eye Dropper Pen). I ordered the pen with a JoWo #6 Medium Nib with a cartridge converter. The nib is beautifully carved (JoWo Unit) Nib, Feed and Writing Experience: 9/10 Since the pen comes equipped with a screw in JoWo Nib Unit, it is a typical JoWo nib performance. It writes relatively wet and extremely smoothly. The feed keeps up with all kinds of crazy writing speeds. The tines are very rigid as nail. No Flex properties exhibited (I don't like Flex). I also ordered a 1.1 Stub Nib that I have yet to test. I'll post a separate review for the Stub Nib when I rotate my inks and replace this medium nib with stub nib. With Parker Quink Blue, the flow is very good and the nib glides on the paper. (A standard Classmate notebook). There is however a slight problem of ink sticking to the walls of the Schmidt Cartridge converter and not flowing down into the feed when beginning to write. A small metal agitator (stainless steel ball bearing or spring) might probably be needed to fix this problem. Suggestions are welcome on how I can get a steel ball into the Schmidt K5 Cartridge Converter. I've loved the writing experience so much that I filled half the notebook with just scribbling. The entire experience of the nib gliding on the paper is very therapeutic! Overall I'd give this pen a solid 8.5/10.
