Hello everyone, Greetings from Malaysia. I had been browsing as a guest on this site for months but only decided to sign-up a few days back (because a voice in my head told me to do so). I was introduced to fountain pens in school by my teachers when I was 11 and always had a fondness for them since then. My first fountain pen was a Hero, which was awful. Soon after, I got my self a Pilot Birdie which was a delight to use. I used it until I was 26 when I lost it in the office. Only in the past year that I seriously started collecting fountain pens as well as various shades of ink. This is my latest acquisition - A Ranga Model 8b eyedropper in matt black with a Kanwrite flex nib. I paid for it on Thursday and it was delivered on Monday to my amazement (Kudos to Ranga Pen Co and DHL). It is a thing of beauty but had a huge problem. The tines had a gap the size of Grand Canyon. So there was no ink flow at all. One of the advice on the internet is to soak the nib in hot water to bring the tines together. Unfortunately, that did not work. I resorted to using brute force and squeezing the nib to get the tines closer. That seem to have done the trick. I have filled it up with Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone and so far so good. Lotus pens is an Indian pen manufacturer based out of Mumbai. It is run by Mr Arun Singhi. I came across this firm through one of the reviews posted on FPN last year or so. Looking through their website, I found some designs that interested me. https://www.lotuspens.com The material they use is from Nikko Ebonite Japan. https://www.nikkoebonite.com/english_site/index.html I was most interested in their model called the Vamza. It is apparently the Sanskrit word for Bamboo. However their Vamza was clipless and a clipless pen is useless for me. YMMV. So I got into a conversation with Mr Singhi reg the possibility of attaching a clip. I sent across some reference pictures and the result is the pen in this review. The credit goes to Mr Singhi alone. The pen comes in a box with an outer cover with the lotus pens logo on it. The box opened. The pen is inside the pouch. The pen. I chose the brown rippled material for it. The pen outside the box. It has a knot on the barrel and one on the cap. The logo on the gold plated clip. The pen uses a standard no 6 nib unit from JoWo and can use a converter or a cartridge. The ends of the pen are depressed to give the impression of a piece of natural bamboo. Nicely done. The inserts show the logo. Both the inserts. Could not manage focus despite stopping down. The section barrel threads are of coarse pitch to permit quick removal of section for refilling. Alongside my trusty Big Red for size comparison. How it rides in the shirt pocket. The section is cylindrical. The pen has a nice length for comfortable use and the knot does not fall on the webbing of my hand. The fit and finish is first rate. The cap and section screw on and off silently and smoothly. There are no machining marks on the pen and the gloss is pretty amazing. The nib is standard JoWo fare with plenty of aftermarket upgrade options. Pricing is available on the website, I felt the prices are a terrific bargain and they ship worldwide. They took about a week to prepare my pen, being a slight customisation. I received this beautiful Lotus Vamza yesterday. What's amazing is that I ordered from the honorable Mr. Arun on November 27 and it arrived on December 8 via DHL. Eleven days from the order to my home. That's a real commitment to customer service and worthy of praise. I love bamboo-shaped pens and this one is fantastic. Made of red and black Nikko ebonite it's a joy in the hand and the craftsmanship is impeccable. I ordered the JoWo 1.1 in gold-tone and I like that the Lotus brand is on the nib. A very nice touch. Most Indian pen manufacturers have ebonite and acrylic pens. Most of the time I see that acrylic is at higher price than ebonite pens. Recently picked up these two super cool Danitrio maki-e fountain pens. Where I shop, Dromgooles in Houston, I have a very large selection of urushi fountain pens. I considered the new and very well made Sailor tamenuri midore-dame King of Pen but rejected it for a variety of reasons. IMG_4295 by Ja Ja, on Flickr Among those reasons was the there were other pens I was more interested in. These pens I purchased were certainly among them! IMG_4296 by Ja Ja, on Flickr IMG_4297 by Ja Ja, on Flickr IMG_4298 by Ja Ja, on Flickr The first is a sho-hakkaku (short/small octogon) based maki-e piece by Hironobu, who is the son of Okazaki. Some of my favorite Danitrio pens are by Okazaki including my sublime shu tamenuri flat top Mikado so I was happy to collect the son's work too. The theme is Aka Fuji (red Mt. Fuji). It is really very beautiful and features many different finishes. The cap base is shu tamenuri whereas the body is kuro-roiro. There are at least 5 different metal powders and no less than 3 different colors of urushi in the maki-work. Then there is the rankaku or egg shells for the snowy peak. The nib is a medium flame decoration 18k piece with plastic feed. Ink is held in a CC. It is a smooth and consistent writer. The base of the Hyotan (gourd) shaped pen is all of rose pink urushi. Not manly perhaps but I love it for its uniqueness and because my daughter really digs it. The colorful maki-e features a stylized mythical Asian phoenix. There is yellow, red, orange, black, and green colored urushi in the flamboyant bird. There appears to be only one type of gold powder used in the design. Wish there was some information on the design, there never is, but I'm interested and my searches thus far have not turned up any answers. Probably a very specific reference to a tale involving a particular phoenix. The artist is another new one to me and one I am very happy to collect, that is, Yuhaku. The nib is a broad 18k with plastic feed and CC filler. The flame design nib is spectacular, it's an amazing writer. Sharing the pictures of my new Deccan Author Red Ebonite eyedropper pen. There are 2 previous posts discussing about the acrylic versions of this pen: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/216836-deccan-aurelius-author/https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/224094-the-deccan-aurelius-aka-the-author/I bought the eyedropper, ebonite Author in red colour, with Deccan stock fine nib. Overall design: It is a simple and elegant design. The colour appears more brownish-red than bright red that is seen in images with light. The clip appears slightly off the center (but it doesn't matter to me). There were small fragments of chipped off ebonite material in the barrel. The cap opens in exactly 2 turns. With cap posted: Barrel is quite thick and the pen looks very sturdy: Nib: The junction of nib/feeder and section is beautiful. Deccan logo (stylized D with stars): It is quite comfortable to hold in hands while writing. I will use the pen for a couple of weeks and follow-up with how the nib writes. My favorite writing style of nib is a fine nib that puts down a wet line. I will do whatever tuning it takes to suit this pen to my regular writing need. So its Sunday morning here and I planned to post it a week ago but got delayed in hopes of adding wality ( which in exchange is running late in transit) so will only focus on these 2 new guys. One is ASA Maya which I went for Jowo fine nib other is kanwrite Heritage. The service was good by both manufactures, never had a issue on contacts with watsapp, email from ASA was well lets just say it was not too good but being contact on watsapp and phone made email redundant so still very nice service. Time take for arrival was 1month 6 days for ASA and 4 days for Kanwrite which is quite on time. I went for matt Maya and solid greenish colored heritage which has a ripple texture (its number 6 in catalog). I quite enjoy the heritage's color which will look different in different lighting from dark blueish in dim light to greenish in bright light never quite reaching either....its interesting to say the least. It is a copy of my blog post at https://inkpensblog.wordpress.com/2017/01/20/deccan-bullet-junior-fountain-pen-in-green-ebonite/ I have heard a lot about Deccan pens in FPN and other pen corridors and have been thinking about getting one. I contacted​ the store through their facebook page and then through WhatsApp. At that time, I was looking for a green ebonite pen as well. So, I chose to get a Deccan Bullet Junior pen in Green Ebonite which was readily available. The delivery was very prompt and I got this beauty in my hands within a weeks time after ordering. It is a small pen and belongs to the category of pocket pens. But, when posted this becomes a normal sized pen and is very comfortable to hold. Unposted, it can not be used at all. It is slightly longer than a Kaweco Sport when unposted and is of the same length when posted. It is polished well and very nice to look at. Polished red and green ebonites appeal to me. The clip is large for a small pen. It is a normal rolled metal clip. The top of clip juts out a lot and is bent at a 90° angle. Anyway, it is a very functional clip. As can be guessed from the size of the pen, it is an eye dropper fill pen. I did not observe any leaks or burping. It came with a nice coating of silicon grease on the barrel threads. The grip section slightly concave shaped and is very comfortable​ to hold. I end up holding it slightly higher (almost on the threads) due to the small size of the nib. The threads are not sharp enough to be trouble me. The has steel flat ambitious nib. It is almost extra fine or ultra extra fine. (I don't have much experience with EF or UEF nibs, but it is much finer than the fine nib on pilot falcon). It wrote very smooth out of the box. Even though I like broader nibs, this nib is very nice. In conclusion, it is a nice small pen with a good finish. I may not use it very regularly due to the nib size, it is a good addition to my collection.

Family owned and operated, Fountain Pen Revolution has come out with their version 2 of the Jaipur fountain pen. Currently there are only 2 acrylics, a blue and an orange and 1 ebonite brown which is the subject of this first look reviewlet. What is it? A piston filler of Indian origin designed and branded by FPR along with a stable of other brands that they sell. The ebonite is smoother and finished better than the Himalaya v2. Himalaya looks and feels more matte whilst the Jaipur is slicker and sheenier. The length is a smidge longer and girthier than the Himalaya with a more cylindrical shape. I much prefer its profile over the himalaya v2 and that pen feels almost perfect. Comparison to an M600 would longer, less taper and slight less girth. Jaipur hits close to Lamy Safari dimensions. Left to right: Leonardo Momento Zero, Pelikan M600, FPR Jaipur v2 with Ultra Flex nib, Lamy Vista (clear Safari) and FPR Himalaya V2 The Jaiput v2 piston filler pen can be completely disassembled for maintenance which is a big plus. Additionally the ebonite feed and nib can be swapped for #6 plastic ones at the FPR shop. Takes about one and a half turns to uncap and Jaipur posts deep and secure. I totally love this. The pen is light at 19.5 grams on my coffee scale. How does it feel?Imagine a light Pelikan M800ish/Lamy Safari sized pen with a very slight tapered grip ending at a very clear and useful ink window. Add an ultra flex steel cut out shouldered nib tuned with an ebonite feed backed by unencumbered volume of piston full of ink. Finally, finally I have converted and firsthand witnessed the praise of pleasurable FPR affordable flex writing. I dare say it is up there with 4x more expensive 14K Gold Jowo flex. Unlike my first stutterings with Himalaya v2, Jaipur v2 wrote straight out of the box no problems. No flushing of feeds or heat settings or bum leaky convertors. I just rinsed the nib and .... WTH!! Let's backtrack... I received shipping at work and could not wait to get home to ink the baby up. Everything check out: no defects and superb build quality, piston worky if not a bit stiff. Knock on wood, I got one from the good batch?! then I came home all hot and bothered in the FP heat phase when to my surprise, I could not undo the blind cap. Blind cap? What's that you say? Well unlike a regular piston converter like Montblanc 146, Pelikan M series, Sailor Realo, etc etc FPR Jaipur v2 has a beautifully thin crafted end cap that the user screws to reveal the actual ribbed piston knob. Clockwise knobbing fills and counter will dispense. I could not get the dang thing off and then I heard a rattle sound and saw separation from the piston mechanism and barrel. We were not dealing with a captured converter here. So just before I'm ready to make love with my new pen, i dun brok it?!@ WTH!@#$ No amount of silicone gripper oven mitt strength twisting would undo the blind cap to access the knob for ink filling! I was really upset as I was not sure I was either tightening the blind cap or loosening it. It would not budge and so I had a pen that could not fill unless I syringed from the nib end which unscrews for nib swaps; basically Jaipur as a crappy eyedropper. Then I remembered FPR introductory video and rewatched for the direction of the twists during the Jaipur overview. https://youtu.be/rkX1p47KbM4 I ended up untwisting out the whole piston assembly then I was able to get better purchase on the blind cap and free it to expose the piston knob. But now I had a piston part to reattach. Luckily I was able to rescrew it back in and get the piston working again. I could filler up! Writing, writing and writingJaipur v2 chews ink up and I love it.Finally can go full plow and refill to use up ink stash. I dunno maybe it's the piston volume and not that skinny skank convertor of the Himalaya v2 but the Jaipur v2 feels like a homerun on the writing experience. Page after A5 page, I can just gush and pour without issue with the right ink. The only negatives were the super tightening of the blind cap which I did not truly did not over tightened which I "fixed" with silicone grease ?! to the inner threads AND hard to turn, stiff piston which I hope to fix with silicone grease to the ink chamber though I kinda don't want to mess up the honeymoon by unscrewing the nib and potentially ruins it!! In all, Jaipur v2 is a worthy flagship and I prefer it over my 2 Himalaya v2s: 1 good and the other meh . No heat setting, flushing, leaking, etc. I just fill and write now. As a true testament to this pen, I bought another one at the time of this reviewlet, this time in blue acrylic to see if it holds up to this faithful ebonite version. Hey, need more data points? Hello everyone. In follow-up to the topic of protecting ebonite and celluloid (cellulose nitrate) started in this thread: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/332509-experiments-to-re-blacken-hard-rubber/page-2?do=findComment&comment=4301019 I've been going down the rabbit hole of researching HALS and other chemicals that offer protection against UV light-induced oxidation. Something that would act as a moisture barrier would be nice as well. HALS and related chemicals can ostensibly be purchased, but the myriad variations and solubilities have me baffled. I found a resource on conservation of paintings https://www.conservation-wiki.com/wiki/VII._Additives but it doesn't really answer my question: what would be safe to use on a vulcanite and/or celluloid pen that would protect it from UV light and water, and can I apply it safely to these surfaces? Any help would be appreciated. And please be gentle - biochemistry was my major in college but that was decades ago. Nick

Next I will show you the photos of the fountain pen and some writing samples using flex and another without flex.

I was frustrated on a pen I bought: a Stipula Etruria Gallicana in Oronero color with a stiflexnib. This pen was gorgeous at first sight, but some drawbacks refrained me from using it daily: -It could only hold a small amount of ink: it is a CC filler. -The feed was a disaster as it was not suitable for a flex nib like the stiflex nib. -The pen was made of acrylic and i love the warm feeling of ebonite. After months of drawing plans and attempting on making parts for the pen I finally succeeded! This pen is made from ebonite rods from Nikko ebonite in ripple orange. The filling system is a Vac-Fill, a copy of the Wahl-Eversharp Doric second generation filling system. The cap doesn't post. The clip is sculpted from solid 316L stainless steel. Cap jewel and end barrel jewel are made of a gem grade rhodolite garnet embedded in 316L stainless steel. The cap ring is made of a solid rod of 316L stainless steel, engraved by hand with carbide tipped burr, with an artificially rusted finish. The nib is an original 14k Stiflex nig from Globus (Stipula) and is quite a wet noodle. The feed is in hard rubber from a destroyed Omas 360. Here are the pictures, it is now my daily writer!
